Dirty Hit

Rate this book
He’s the campus god with blood on his hands.
I’m the TA who should’ve walked away.

Everyone worships Dominic Volkov—the Russian quarterback with a million‑dollar smile, a body built for victory, and a future everyone wants a piece of. He’s untouchable on the field and off it. The kind of man who owns every room he walks into.

But I know better.

The first time I met him, there was a dead man lying at his feet and blood on his hands. But instead of running, I made a deal with the devil and bound myself to a man who doesn’t believe in mercy.

I was raised to fear sin and resist temptation. To believe wanting the wrong thing would damn me.

I’ve never been good at running from sin.
And Dominic has made it clear that I’m his favorite.

Other person drama: I stopped reading at 48%, but there isn't really much reference to Brendon's past other than that he dated girls. Dominic has been very active, and he makes some ugly references to wanting to hook up with others despite his interest in Brendon, but he doesn't go through with it. He also kind of make some uncomfortable/awkward disclosures about his past, like mid hook up with Brendon he will tell him that he's f***** tons of other good people on the counter that Brendan is sitting on right now. Really, does that need to be here?!

1 star, DNF

So I'm a person who cannot dnf. I'm too OCD to do that, my neurospicy brain cannot handle dnfing well. I made it to 48%, and I knew I wasn't happy with how the book was going, and I had a lot of critical stuff to say about it. I was prepared to keep reading and just hope it would get better, finish it. But I know the trigger warnings said that this book contains sexual assault and self-harm themes, and I realized that for my peace I needed to stop reading.

Because of the flaws that I had seen so far, I knew I could not trust this author to navigate me through those tough themes. And it was going to hurt me mentally more if I read it, then if I walked away.

I do feel like I read enough to rate this book, because it was seriously flawed. And I want other readers to be warned.

Here's my list of complaints, in chronological order that they occurred to me as I was reading:

- Dominic is 25 and he is a college athlete. Brendon is 22 and his TA. I don't know if the author ever explains why Dominic is still in school at 25 while supposedly being so good that he is expected to go pro. But it's wild that the book went at minimum 48% without even acknowledging that it was strange for him to be that age. I feel like the author didn't tell us enough for us to know the characters.

- At page 136, Dominic was planning to go out and f*** someone else. And yeah I don't love that but my problem with this is that Dominic's not consistent. I don't get how he's at times so possessive of Brendon, and then ignores him for 2 weeks, while still internal monologuing about him being his, and then so casually make plans for fucking a random. Pick a lane and stick to it!

- Daddy kink is a bit of an ick for me. I don't get it. But I can tolerate it. But the daddy kink in this one kind of came out of left field, there's only a 3-year age gap between them and it didn't naturally develop, so I don't know where Brendon came up with it, and it was just awkward. And I disliked that it was so pervasive, Brendon calls him daddy all the time, even outside of sex.

- The kink in this book is badly done. In general it comes out of nowhere and seems to just be performative and ticking a kink box. It doesn't seem to come from a place of true passion or feelings. And that's probably because the author is not doing a really good job of letting us into the heads of the characters, showing their emotions, developing an emotional connection. So it's just kink without passion and it lands cold.

- This book is guilty of telling us rather than showing us. It's a lot of pomp and posturing. And I hate the "you're different because you see me for who I am" trope, it reminds me of pick mes. Ick.

- I don't like how a lot of things happen off page. Like apparently Dominic is close to the cat Jericho. And apparently Dominic gave Brendon a key to his place. There's so many things that the book just skips over, that you don't feel like you're in the moment and that the development and pace is natural.

- The passage of time is also weird and disjointed. Like, all of a sudden it's been 4 months that they have been screwing around, but they haven't done anal in that time despite Brendon wanting it since about 2 weeks in. It's an ick of mine when one character tells another character "you're not ready" and decides for them what they are going to do sexually. I don't think one person should be deciding for another person.

- This is a continuation of the one above, but it's so wild I think it needs its own point. The FISTING at page 246... Dominic says he won't fuck Brendon's virgin hole, because he's afraid he will tear him and he isn't ready for him, but he will FIST him roughly?!?! Like are we serious right now?!

Some notable moments:

I didn't have a single highlight during the first 48% that was a positive one. Everything I highlighted was bad s***.

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

"Brendon is not a one-off soul I can scrub off in the shower. He’s in everything already— in my coffee routine, in the way I word texts, in the way I check my phone between drills. He’s in the way I think about my future, and see his face flickering at the edge of it, like a glitch. He’s the first thought I have when I wake up, and the last one before I fall asleep, and that’s not superstition, that’s fact. But I’m not built for forever. He’s not safe around forever."

Dirty Hit by Avery Collins will not be for everyone, so first up I urge you to check the author's TWs and make sure it's for you. I have absolutely no issues with dark reads or dark themes of any sort so I literally inhaled this one!

Welcome to Lakehaven college, where our MMcs are Dominic Volkov, the star quarterback with the million‑dollar smile to match his NFL expectations, but he's hiding some dark, dirty, murderous secrets and Brendon Lane, preacher's son, studying law, TA extraordinaire and so repressed by his parents and his own expectations that he can barely breathe.

I absolutely loved this one and could have happily continued reading about these boys' broken and traumatised psyches for a few more hundred pages!

What To Expect:

🖤MM college romance
🔪Jock x nerd
🖤Gay awakening
🔪Pitch black dark themes
🖤First times
🔪Serial killer x preacher's son
🖤All the steam
🔪Opposites attract
🖤Pierced MMC
🔪Daddy trope
🖤Dom/Sub
🔪HEA (hard won and morally dark as pitch!)

It's a 5 star read for me BUT do remember to check the warnings!

DNF - 64%

I think this is a sign to stop reading Collins.

There are some improvements from the last book I’d read. For example, my AI concerns have been doused, and Dominic is far from the posturing men that were in “Conquest.” The issue is,

The book didn’t need to be as long as it is.

Now, I didn’t have a problem with the characters, I liked Dominic, he defied the stereotypical “mafia-man” in the book world, without losing the core aspects. That is, he wasn’t over done. He was domineering and brash, but he was respectful in a way that made me surprised. He treated Brendon with care, which made the first half of the book enjoyable to read.

So what went wrong with the second half?

It got extremely boring. Brendon and Dominic were essentially in what was a relationship and yet there were still 300 pages left in my ebook. Why? I’d wager it has to be mafia drama, and as I’ve stated clearly, I don’t really like mafia books, so I wouldn’t want to read 300 more pages of it. Though, while it did have mafia themes, it didn’t read very much like a one, and felt more like a dark campus novel. That being said, I did DNF this book a while back, so I’m not entirely sure as to whether it really is a mafia book. There were also a lack of side characters in the book, and it made me realise how much I liked them. It felt like I was wholly submerged in their intense love, so I essentially got “burnt out” by the mid stage.

I am also now back in my reading slump. Thus, I will avoid Collins from now on. :(

I loved this. I ate it up.
Avery Collins is one of those writers that makes me slow down as to not miss a word. I read this in one go. This is a dark mixed bloody, kinky bag of tricks. Both MCs were fierce and bad ass in their own ways. Domenic with... everything and Branden with his intelligence, loyalty, acceptance and understanding. This was beautiful in it's dark themes and ferocious feelings.
Once again Avery Collins writes about trauma inducing monster parents and gives us all the healing and love needed to overcome them.

I loved that we got a cameo from Luca and Eli from Blackthorne U.

*Kink specifics #notmykink (but that's o.k.)

#weallneedasethforcleanup 🙃

I can't believe that was over 500 pages 🫪

Gorgeous cover.

First and foremost, I just want to thank Avery for bringing Dominic to us. Just damn.. The author knew what she was doing with him. For once, I’m pretty much at a loss for words and I feel like I don't have anything sensible to say 😂 It might also be because I read this 521-page book in one sitting and my brain chemistry is all messed up.

I was on the verge of a reading slump, but this completely swept me away and saved me from the brink. I couldn't stop reading. I guess all it took was a slightly psycho, murderous quarterback with a soft side only for his good boy, a Dom/sub dynamic, and let’s not forget some knife play.. and innocent running in the woods.

This was hot, fun, filthy and also, sweet.

I also loved Jericho, such a fun addition 🐈‍⬛

The reasons why this didn't get five stars are that it was a bit ott in places, the characters' backgrounds and stories weren't explored in enough depth; Brendon’s faith was brought up and he was introduced as a “church boy,” but his faith wasn’t discussed any further, I also didn’t quite fully understand Dominic’s story and the murderous streak. This also left some questions unanswered (e.g. Seth? and did anyone get a hint about Dominic’s actions and come after him?)

I will definitely re-read this at some point—hopefully as an audiobook.

”I can say whatever the fuck I want. You can argue, and I’ll enjoy it. Then you’ll go home and lie awake, thinking about my hand on your throat and my voice in your ear, and the next time you kneel to pray, you’ll hear me instead of God.”

”They liked you. Of course, they fucking liked you. If they knew about the shit you say to me when you’ve got your hand around my throat, my dad’s brain would explode.”
“You want me to start quoting scripture while I’m choking you out? Really lean into the preacher kink?”
“Dominic. Stop.”

”That’s dangerous,” he says softly.
”Kissing you?”
”Loving me like that,” he corrects, no hesitation.

”We’re going to play a game.”
“Ugh, your games. They always end with me on my knees, or on my back.”
”You say that like it’s a bad thing.”

”Run.”
“What?”
“Run, baby.
You’ve got a thirty-second head start. Make it count.”

”No arguments, Little Sin. Strip, straddle me, and take what you begged for. Earn the oxygen I just gifted you.”

”Stay with me. Good boys don’t float too far, do they?”

Stop because this book was SO hot ❤️‍🔥 and Dominic and Brendon are everything 🥹💗

The way Dominic always knew exactly what to say to comfort Brendon and make him feel safe and confident was so sweet and thoughtful 😭💓 like… the fact that he even did research to better take care of him?? That was so beautiful.

Honestly, Dominic always found the perfect words for Brendon and their conversations together genuinely made me want to cry because they were so adorable 🥹

And of course, Brendon was always there for Dominic too 😭 they truly complete each other perfectly. I adored them together so much.

I genuinely loved this book and highly recommend it 💓📚 !

Pushed further than I should have and wasted 300 pages.
DNF @ 58%

Reasons for the DNF and possible spoilers below:
.
.
.
.
.
Unnecessarily long
So many points where I couldnt make it past the cringe
Kink felt hella forced
Boot licking degradation during a massive power imbalance 🤢
Dom feels the need to tell Brendon all about all the people he's fucked and where in his cottage (like the counter that Brendon was currently sitting on).
Brendon shows up at Dom's cottage as a form of self harm - offering himself up so he doesn't kill or fuck someone else. "Take it out on me instead", "Hurt me, not them." Of course Dom face fucks him. Keep in mind this is also Brendon's first time ever touching a dick or having one in his mouth. Dom then lectures him about how he better never do that again and he shouldnt offer himself and called him out for the self harm. But where was that energy and concern for his self harm before you got your dick wet?
The most ridiculous fisting - Dom fists Brendon before he ever even puts his dick inside him claiming that it's working him up to handle his dick 🙄. Bro please. Your dick is not wider than a 6' 4" football players entire fucking fist. This was also after Brendon had been douching and prepping himself for weeks because he wanted to go all the way but Dom wouldn't because he said Brendon "wasn't ready". Yet he's somehow ready for a whole fucking arm up there.
Dom laughing at Brendon when his ass is super sore the day after their first time together and was struggling to move.

I love a book that dares to be different, and this one delivered! It was fresh, chaotic, emotional, and completely addictive with a HEA that had smiling idiotically.

A morally grey Russian college football star who rides a Ducati and isn’t scared to gets his hands dirty, sometimes murderously so, paired with a cat-loving nerdy TA preacher’s son, and newly unapologetic daddy kink enthusiast? Somehow, it works perfectly.

What starts as secrets turns into a journey of self-discovery. The chemistry between these two had me in an absolute chokehold from beginning to end. Their banter is chefs kisses.

Unique, unforgettable, and easily one of my favourite reads of 2026.

ARC REVIEW!!!!!!!!

WRITING STYLE ✨
One thing Avery Collins does exceptionally well, is Dialogue. There’s a weight to the way she writes conversations where nothing feels superficial or unnecessary. She has this ability to make you expect a conversation to go one way… and then completely shift it into something deeper, more vulnerable, and more meaningful than you anticipated. Her writing flows so naturally that even emotionally heavy moments remain easy to absorb without losing their impact.

The dialogue between Brendon and Dominic was sharp, emotional, layered, and incredibly immersive. 10/10

PACING & YEARNING✨
Yes, there’s immediate attraction and chemistry from the beginning and I was like, “we licking boots already??? Dominic chill!!!” 😂😂😂 But Avery Collins didn’t let it ruin the book or take the element of anticipation away.
Instead, she builds yearning on top of that instant connection, and that balance was done fantastically. The emotional tension keeps growing chapter after chapter until Brendon and Dominic reach a point where walking away from each other was NOT an option!
Every moment between both MMCs felt earned. 👌🏾

CHARACTERIZATION✨
What I loved most about Brendon and Dominic was discovering who they really were beneath first impressions. Dominic could have easily been reduced to ‘the dangerous one,’ and Brendon the ‘boring church boy’ but Avery Collins said ‘my boys are more than that’. She gave both MMCs depth, vulnerability, and emotional complexity that made them impossible not to understand. Brendon’s journey especially stayed with me. Reading him struggle with faith, identity, expectations, desire, and self-acceptance felt incredibly raw and authentic. As a PK myself, I connected deeply with Brendon’s upbringing and it’s refreshing to see her handle that conversation with so much care and balance. ❤️

THEMES✨
Of course, there were a couple of other themes, but Faith and Identity is prominent in the book. Two delicate subjects in romance, especially queer romance, but Avery Collins handled it beautifully. Brendon’s faith was never treated as something shallow or meaningless and at the same time, the story never became preachy or overly controversial. The balance between faith, identity, shame, longing, and self-discovery was handled with a lot of nuance and emotional intelligence.
Although, Brendon and I may or may not have bonded over what the Lord would think about his bedroom escapades and my Kindle history. 😭But hey, fiction is fiction. 😂😉

SPICE ✨🌶️
Oh, there were definitely “I need to go touch some grass moments” 😂😂🥵🥵, but the spice in this book deserves its own conversation because it was done SO FREAKING well. Avery Collins approached BDSM, dominance, submission, and power dynamics with care, respect, communication, and consent at the center. What stood out to me most was that even within those dynamics, Brendon and Dominic still felt emotionally equal. I felt like beyond the power play, this was ultimately a story about two people meeting each other with trust, care, vulnerability, and devotion. The intimacy never felt exploitative or excessive, but it felt intentional, emotional, and deeply connected to the characters themselves. Also, I really appreciated how the book gently educated readers on submission without demonizing it or reducing it to stereotypes.

EXPERIENCE ✨
Let me EMPHASIZE, that I read for fun and entertainment and I do not condone the violent behavior or tendencies potrayed in this book. That is why it is a FICTIONAL dark romance, which I am positive is NOT a reflection of the ideals and values of myself or the author. This is a Serial Killer/ Preacher’s Kid trope and there are trigger warnings attached. It is either for you or not, and that’s okay! 💯
That being said, I had a great time reading this book. 👌🏾😌 Laughter, emotional scenes, loud reactions that I’m sure grated on my neighbours’ nerves (I’m not sorry 🤭) and scenes that had me clutching my damn pearls!!!😂😂

It’s Avery Collins, of course it’s 5 freaking ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! 😌

Heroes: Dominic and Brendon

This was so good!
Dominic is the star quarterback hiding a dark secret. Brendon is the repressed TA, law student, and preacher's son.
This is everything I love about Avery's books - MC's you fall in love with instantly, some dark and gritty themes/moments, and insane chemistry and heat. It's quick steam but a slowburn romance that is so beautiful as it unfolds.
I think this is one of my favorite reads of the year!

This was a ride! Dominic and Brendon went on journey of self discovery, emotional healing and personal development. Dominic and Brendon were raised with completely opposite morals, values and beliefs yet they both experienced variations of trauma. Neither of them had anyone they could truly lean on when needed and both lived with underlying fear of what additional damage their parents could bring to their lives. Having this in common gave them a way to connect with one another. They may not be fully aware of each other’s past experiences but they know enough to be each other’s support system which was great to see.

The chase was a fun time and I loved the nicknames Brendon gave Dominic. They were fitting and oddly cute. Their dynamic was fun and we love a judgmental cat!!

Holy moly!! This book was so damn good, I was out here rationing it 😭. I took a few chapters a day when I could’ve finished it in one day because that how’s much I didn’t want it to finish. This is absolutely insane, it has so of my favorite kinks ever and it’s done so well. The storytelling, the pace 🤌. I’m going to be riding a high from this for a while.

words cannot do this justice!!

this was a war between racing to the finish line but also wanting to savour it and also needing more of dominic and brendon.

“There’s no youth group pamphlet for “what to do when you like it when the monster kisses you.”

religious guilt is so real and so beautifully written here, it’s not cringe and it’s not flawless. its messy and raw and painful.

“Because from now on, I’m taking care of him. When your God asks you why you hung up on your bleeding kid while you were quoting scripture at me, I hope you have a better answer ready than ‘he loved wrong.’”

my heart.

“Figured if he’s going to use that book as a weapon, I can use it as a mirror.”

period!!

up until the hospital scene i was feeling like it was 6 million stars of out ten, there are definitely some parts i feel like would’ve change this to a 5 star read for me.

- the end scene didn’t feel like it added anything, if we couldn’t see them making up after it? it felt like adding insult to injury after he recovered. it would’ve been nice to see a soft moment after all that roughness.

-the jacobs ladder?? hello!! my favourite topic ever!! but Dom says “ ‘You’re the reason there are six—‘ I stop myself, and her gaze drops flicks to the front of my jeans, like she can see the ghost of those six bars. The bars I had put there to stop her. Revulsion rolls through me so hard I have to bite back bile.” WHAT? That was weird. and we never expanded on that.

-there was spice, yes but I didn’t feel like it was spread throughout the length of it to be honest it felt concentrated in the beginning and fizzled out as they connected on a deeper level. amazing but im just a girl and i just need to see the Daddy/boy dynamic come back to live. revive me pls.

ultimately….

“I am, for all intents and purposes, a sugar baby to a serial killer who plays professional football in Los Angeles.”

AND THATS EXACTLY HOW HE SHOULD BE, I love it.

I really enjoyed the writing, Brendon, Dom and Jericho the cat. This book's biggest problem is that it was way too long and it did start to get a little bit repetitive, especially in the middle. Also, Brendon's parents can to fuck themselves.
I did love the soft moments Dom showed Brendon 😳 Also, the sex was great as well.

Porn with a plot
The writing is repetitive
The thrill of the beginning dulled very quickly,it was a very disappointing read
I'm pretty sure all the good reviews are from arc readers
"Now I have to figure out how to keep us all alive after the queen died "
Darling, queen of WHAT???? We finish the book without sitting a foot into the actual story
What was she leading? What was she training him for? What happened to his brother?
Come the fuck on I don't have to fish for the main events in a book
The author had a great story and gave us glimpses and bits of it in the middle of the fuck feast
The sex was written by someone who never had a finger up there bums, extremely unrealistic and has nothing to do with gay sex
and most of it is from other books, mostly by the word
That was embarrassing to read honestly
The amount of times I CRINGED while reading it would make a drinking game and end up with every on blackout

Dirty Hit | Avery Collins 🏈🔥🖤

Dominic Volkov is a walking disaster. A red flag? No, the man is an entire alarm system. 🚨

What I loved most about this book was that the dark romance atmosphere wasn't used just for shock value. Beneath the obsession, secrets, and high tension atmosphere, a genuinely strong emotional connection develops. Reading Dominic's possessive and out-of-control tendencies was incredibly enjoyable.

As good as Dominic's obsession was, Brendon's daddy kink was handled just as well. The attraction between them is palpable from the very first page and never weakens for a moment throughout the book. The push and pull dynamic between them was the kind that becomes completely addictive.

The spicy scenes definitely did not disappoint. The chemistry between the characters was amazing, and the dirty talk was one of the details that impressed me the most. The hot scenes aren't just hot they also make the characters' attachment and obsession with each other feel even stronger. 🥵🔥

If you enjoy dark atmospheres, obsessive characters, high-tension relationships, and morally gray characters, Dirty Hit is exactly the kind of book that should be on your radar. 🖤📚

This book is perfection! This will undoubtably become my next hyper fixation because I just love Brendon and Dominic so much!

Dominic, the star quarterback and “golden boy” at the University of Lakehaven, is on the verge of becoming ineligible to play due to his grades. Brendon, a preachers son and overall people pleaser, is assigned to be Dominic’s TA.

Brendon gets more than he bargained for when he arrives early to their first session and sees Dominic standing over a dead body with blood on his hands. Instead of running away, Brenden gets pulled into Dom’s dark and twisted world where he slowly drops the facade and surrenders to become his true self.

This is very dark so definitely check the trigger warnings!!

Dominic and Brendon
Really good. the ending took me a bit to get through but I flew through the first 80% of the book. Brendon walks in on Dominic killing someone and stays to teach him (as his TA). Dominic then peruses Brendon until he gives in to what he wants.
Dominic is the greenest red flag ever. The way he handles Brendons anxiety and get him out of his head is everything. Also the aftercare he gives is so cute
he fists him before they fuck which i think is funny. also some primal play, breath play, and defeatism (licking his boot!) great d/s vibes
the ending was resolved rly fast. not that much. The mom tells brendon’s parents and they disown him. They the mom stabs brendon in his sleep and dominic kills her. hea
good shit

I enjoyed Dominic, and this story had so much potential, but whyyyyy was it so long????
They get together around the 40% mark, and somehow we end up with bad mafia, dark-ish campus drama…? It completely lost me.

I think I need to lay off college romances I’m too old for this.
The spice was fine, but Brendon seriously pissed me off.
I thought we were getting a cute brat with absolutely zero survival instincts, but instead we got a whiny virgin Christian calling him Daddy and begging for something he’d never even had.

This was pretty fun but way too long and wayyy too dramatic at times. That last scene with the break in really didn’t add anything to the story and just made the whole thing seem like a soap opera lol.
