Drowning: The Lonely Isle

Rate this book
A prince survives the sea—only to discover the shore may be his true prison.

Rescued by a mermaid and stranded on a lonely island, Garret must confront a truth older than not all captors use chains.

An excerpt from Drowning; The Lonely Isle
'Sunlight wrapped around him like a lie—soft, golden, and comforting—making the night before feel impossibly distant, more fever dream than memory. His mind, overwhelmed, inventing illusions to guide itself through the storm. Surely he had survived on instinct alone.
He let his gaze drift across the waves.
Far out among a ring of red stone, something perched atop the highest crest—long, lithe, unmistakably feminine. A silhouette carved from gleam and malice.
The creature from his delusion stared back at him.
Then, with a sharp shake of her head—disgust, irritation, almost human disdain—she slipped beneath the waves and was gone.
Cold horror knifed through Garret’s gut; another surge of seawater escaped him.
The storm.
The sea.
The siren.
What she had done to him—what he had done to her—it was real.'

I was hooked from the very beginning of Drowning: The Lonely Isle. What felt like a simple survival story slowly turned into something deeply unsettling. Garret’s rescue seemed like a miracle at first, but the island quickly began to feel like a cage. The mermaid is written in a way that kept me constantly unsure whether she was protector or captor, and that tension never lets up. The atmosphere is heavy, intimate, and haunting, I finished it feeling unsettled in the best way.

This novella is very well written and I found it to be engaging and entertaining. There are elements of adventure, horror, romance and fantasy. Waltz defines the meaning of bravery, love and relationship. Waltz’s language is metaphorically poetic in describing the adult situations. There is no vulgar or raunchy language of which I am grateful. I look forward to future publications.
