Bloodlines #1

Break Me Open

In a world built on rules, Arseny Zakirov has survived by breaking them quietly.

A decorated Russian officer, Arseny knows exactly what is forbidden: weakness, attachment, and above all, loving another man. He’s learned to keep his desires contained, controlled, and invisible. Until Caiden Varrik arrives.

Caiden is everything Arseny shouldn’t want. A British officer. A rival ally. Reckless, warm, impossible to ignore. What begins as sharp glances and restrained tension becomes something far more dangerous: connection. And in a place where secrets don’t stay buried, desire is a liability that can destroy careers, loyalties, and lives.

As deployments loom and the weight of duty closes in, Arseny and Caiden are forced to confront the truth neither of them can outrun. Some bonds don’t break cleanly. Some loves leave scars. And some choices, once made, demand everything.

Break Me Open is a slow-burn military romance about restraint and surrender, power and vulnerability, and what it costs to love when the world is watching—and waiting for you to fail.

About the author

M.J. Walsh

M.J. Walsh is an independent author based in Yorkshire, UK. She writes emotionally intense romance about complicated men making questionable decisions and falling in love at the worst possible time.

Her books feature forbidden love, military settings, morally grey characters, messy relationships, dark themes, and the occasional devastating lack of communication. She is the author of the Bloodlines series and the Faultlines duet, with several more stories currently waiting for their turn to cause problems.

When she isn’t writing fictional men into increasingly terrible situations, she can usually be found reading, drinking far too much coffee, buying books faster than she can read them, or explaining why the next manuscript will absolutely be less emotionally destructive.

Soft dnf because the characterization of both of these men is flip flopping all around the place, it's pissing me off and i'm in a mood.
The fact he's got a crush on one brother, finds out his straight, so he just attaches his attraction to the other brother is kinda weird.
And that brother, is...... feral, but calm, but rational, but serious, but smirking, but controlled, but out of control, but mysterious, but chatty, but closed off, but also lurking quietly, but is always watching, but is present..... i'm confused.. can we pick one and stick to it.

I'll be back.

While I loved Ari and Caiden, and the general mood of the story, I feel like the book really could have used another beta round and a polish.
The biggest issue for me was chapters that directly contradict each other. (f.ex. In one chapter they kiss, then have a whole conversation, and then next chapter, the other character is offended because "he left without a word".)

Also... there were logistical issues concerning the sort of intercourse the characters engaged in that would lead to injury, pain and an absolute lack of enthusiasm for up to several weeks in the real world. Please people. Lube it up. Always. Lots.
If you can look past that, the spicy scenes were well written, and the characters are strong personalities that clash and crash together for lots of great chemistry.

All that said, the characters still made me enthusiastic about reading book 2. =)

4.1 stars. I'm struggling with this review... the writing was excellent. The chapters sometimes overlapped in time, in a good way, from each MCs POV, which worked well with this book. Having both POVs was essential, because SO much was happening in their heads. This is a military romance during DADT (or before?) in Russia! , so there is a lot of angst, a lot of we absolutely shouldn't but also a lot of I can't stay away from you. I'm not happy about finding out this is more than a duet... there are going to be 3 or 4 books. This book kind of has an ending, but not a true romance ending, whether it is a dark romance or not. But the characters, the yearning and pining are sublime.

DNF @ 25%

Damn, I got whiplash from absolutely falling in love with this book in the first chapter, only to get slapped in the face with disappointment in the next.

This reads like the tackiest telenovela, where every stupid little interaction between the mcs gets blown wildly out of proportion and then shown from five different angles just to milk it for extra drama. These guys behave like 15-year-olds going through puberty. It’s ridiculous.

Break Me Open is so far from what I expected this story to be, and honestly, a huge letdown.
There was a playlist at the beginning of the book. I should have known...

DNF. MM. read until chapter 9. I had high hopes when i read chapter 1, the writing pulled me in and i was ready for the military part of plot. Unfortunately, it was very quickly when chapters started to repeat from different POVs (yes whole chapters) and i noticed that, while the author wrote about training, there wasn’t really a plot other than two men who didn’t want to be attracted to each other. With the repetition and (up until that point) lack of plot, i decided not to spend my time with this book.

This book really surprised me. I thoroughly enjoyed the read, the characters and the trope. It hooked me from the start and I most certainly will be diving right into book 2. A dual POV book where the chapters relinked and revisited the same scene - clever.

This was unbelievably good. I inhaled it in a few hours. I can’t really put it into words how I feel about Caiden and Ari and I’m glad it’s not completely over yet.

The characters seem immature also didnt like the fact that Caiden was so hung up on the straight brother for that long .And God the repetition was killing

Kind of got tired of the constant back and forth of them brooding because they thought the other one was unbothered by what they were doing.

Oh my days

This was insane in a good way!!! I’m not sure that I’d classify it as a dark romance if I’m honest but it’s still a really good story. I can’t wait for part two, I’m glad that I waited this long to read this one so there’s not too long to wait for the 2nd installment

Holy fuck.
This story left me broken and shedding tears, which never happens. Best (worst) part is that I'm still thinking about Caiden and Arseny days after.
I wanted to write a review right after I was finished, but I didn't have any words in me to describe how this story left me.
Everything in this stort felt real. All the emotion the yearning, the pining, the pain, the fear, the love between them...
And the way it left is making me scream because I need to know how their story continues right now and I cannot wait to continue it.
The entire thing was wonderful written and this is definitely the best read of 2026 for me so far.

Oh and the spice was definitely spicing.

This book had the me in a choke hold since the first pages.
I loved the characters, their dinamic, the setting, thenanter, the writing.
Caiden and Ari are well developed and you can feel the tension in every interaction. The plot is plotting the tension gives you a mild ulcer and the payoff... well you'll have to read the book for that.
100% would recommend this book
