Eberron: Forge of The Artificer

Rate this book
In the shadowed underlayers of Sharn — the City of Towers — secrets trade hands in steam-filled alleys, and invention sparks beneath the weight of power and ambition. Here, Artificers are visionaries who blend spellcraft and invention, using gears and magic in equal measure to turn the impossible into reality. They see the arcane not merely as mystery, but as mechanism — something to be decoded, refined, and brought to life. Forge wonders with the Artificer — the ultimate creative class! This 112-page expansion unlocks your workshop of the arcane: subclasses (four reimagined and one new): the Cartographer, who charts the unknown with maps that reshape reality ; 5 revised species, 17 evocative backgrounds, and 28 feats that let your imagination defy gravity ; a new spell, bastions, and magical innovations that turn every choice into a creation ; 3 campaign frameworks to channel Eberron's wild genres: noir intrigue, sky-high pulp, and political peril ; 20+ new monsters, each tailored to haunt, thrill, or awe in the genre you're forging

I almost always rate books here, but don't feel like that would be fair here; I honestly only bought this because I love playing artificers and wanted to get the updated rules for them (and I was in a good local game shop and it was a reasonable price). I have yet to read the main 5E Eberron book or any of the older material, and while the information here on the setting makes me more interested than I already was (and I was!), it'd be hard for me to say how it fits or how good it is, relatively speaking. The new bastion options, airship rules... seem cool to me, but I haven't dealt with the former in any game I run or play let, and the airship in the campaign I'm running is a bit long in the tooth to completely revamp now.

So, the artificer class: I think, like most of the classes in the revised PHB, it's a small but distinct improvement on its predecessor. I like the way they've simplified and streamlined some of the options without necessarily reducing them, I like the new subclass, and overall I am as excited to play the class as I was before, if not more. So for what I wanted it's absolutely worth it, but it was also absolutely indulgent for me to buy a whole physical book for that.

I picked up the “Eberron: Forge of the Artificer” rulebook last year and slowly read through it cover to cover.

It’s a supplement to the existing Eberron: Rising from the Last War book from 2019. The classes, species, and feats are updated for the 2024 D&D edition, but many parts of the book also reference back to the earlier book. The last half of the book is a resource for DMs and how to build different styles of campaigns in the world.

Other than the artificer class updates, this is a book only for folks engaging in an Eberron campaign.

Solid content, just too short. Luckily Keith Baker publishes incredible world lore to make up for it.
