A horde of demons floods San Francisco through a doorway to their wasted world. They’ve eaten all the natives and are here for blood.
Konrad Pengill turns into an avenging monster when he’s enraged. Lei Hua Jiang is a Kung Fu master. Their purity enables them to hear the voice of a dragon hatched from an egg smuggled into San Francisco to save the city.
The thrill ride is on as Konrad and Lei battle the demons and their desire for each other. The doorway must be closed or the nightmare will never end. Will Konrad, Lei, and the dragon be able to overcome the demons or will San Francisco sink under a bloodbath?
This is a lot of fun. A fast-moving 'vampires hit modern San Francisco tale', but with Chinese triads thrown in and a heap of slightly-suspect characters with links to the SFPD including Konrad, the main protagonist, who's struggling with anger issues that can tip him over into an entirely new creature altogether - the very cool Berserker. There's also Lance, a 'good' or at least 'better' vampire, who loves surfing but because of the obvious problem with the sun, must do so through the night. In fact, day and night almost merge into one as the tale zooms from the sky above San Fran to the sewers below. Some nice lines too, 'I'd do it in a heartbeat, if I had one,' and a nice scene where the heroes have filled super soakers with Holy water from the nearest Catholic church in order to battle the vamps. Not the sort of thing I normally read, but great fun.
