If you like Fantasy, D&D and intriguing characters supported by beautiful world building then I urge you to read this book. The debut novel from Johann Van Molendorff is a gorgeous story of a Vampire trying to regain his humanity after a centuries long quest while all the time fighting the beast within. Beautiful Elves, gruff Dwarves, determined Rangers and even the occasional cheeky side quest. This was a fantastic read and a really decent length of book too. Can’t wait for the next instalment from this author.

The author’s world‑building is exceptional, painting a setting that feels vast, lived‑in, and immersive without ever overwhelming the reader. Every location feels purposeful, and the atmosphere pulls you in from the very first chapter.
What truly elevates the story, though, is Van MolenDorff’s remarkable character work. His characters are fictional, yes, but written with such emotional depth that they feel real. You don’t just read about their struggles, you feel them. Their fears, hopes, and internal conflicts resonate on a very human level.
The growth of Valonius and Shariza is especially compelling. Watching each of them evolve individually, while also seeing how their paths intertwine, is one of the novel’s greatest strengths. Their arcs are layered, meaningful, and incredibly satisfying to follow.
The ending leaves readers with one lingering, unanswered question, and it’s the kind of open thread that feels intentional, a quiet invitation to continue the journey in a future book. Hopefully the author explores it further in the next installment.
While there are a few minor spelling and grammar errors scattered throughout, they never detract from the storytelling or emotional impact of the narrative.
Overall, Redemption: A Tale of Loss is a heartfelt, imaginative fantasy tale that I would highly recommend to fans of epic worlds and character‑driven stories, especially those who enjoy works like The Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. I enjoyed this epic, magical-realm vampire story. The book has well-developed characters with a combination of magical creatures and humans, along with the vivid descriptions of the land, buildings, and people, which filled out the world-building nicely. I enjoyed the unique actions and decisions of a vampire with a conscience. The supporting characters were classic in their positions surrounding the main character: love, friendship, and loyalty versus hate, wickedness, and betrayal. “Redemption” is filled with epic fights, blood, gore, and derring-do adventuring, high stakes, sweeping journeys, and profound themes. The quest was logical, followable, and the actions of the characters, both good and evil, made sense.
Areas of some issue for me were that I felt the book could have ended after the largest battle and culmination of the Valonius’ dreams and quest. The rest would feed nicely into a second book with some backstory and a broader explanation of the “One-God” concept. The last part of the book felt much more focused on the religious aspects. It folds in a more biblical focus, including Christ-like miracles, and the spreading of belief in the “One-God” through faith, miracles, and the destruction of evil. The cover art was fabulous; however, the font choice and underlined title/authour name deserve an update to something more fitting/exciting if any changes were made at some point.
All in all – this was an excellent first book by this authour.

The story follows Valonius, a vampire against his will, on an epic journey to reclaim his humanity. From the very first page, the book captures your attention and immerses you in a fast-paced adventure, brought to life through vivid and engaging descriptions. Both fantasy enthusiasts and newcomers to the genre will find this debut novel thoroughly enjoyable.

Really enjoyable epic fantasy. Amazing worldbuilding and the descriptions just brings the world to life. The characters are well thought out and portrayed within the pages. Amazing book from a first time author. I want more.

Redemption by Johan van Molendorff... is a captivating book, a good read, exceptionally curated and thrilling. Good story line, one of the best books I've read recently.
