In my Arms, by Zac Porter, explores how the present moment is constructed and informed by memory. Set in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia, In my Arms is a book with rich, lyrical prose in the traditions of William Faulkner and Virginia Woolf. It is a book focused on the Appalachian landscape, a book focused on family ties, and a poetic rendering of an October day.
i read this at around five this morning before my shift. finished it all in one sitting. i read it in the middle of summer yet i felt the autumn air and that strange feeling of nostalgia it carries. it's truly a wonderful thing to feel so deeply. beautiful prose is my kryptonite, especially the kind that envelops you in a sort of bubble-dimension. i was lying, sweating in bed but suddenly the wind was cool against my skin and almost on cue the mourning doves and chickadees started their song. i can see myself reading this again - maybe after a while so i forget and when i return i can breathe in the beauty anew. i'm hungry for more.
