Annalise has spent her entire life surviving her father, the revered sheriff of South Hollow. One violent night, she’s forced to choose between her life and his. Bleeding, terrified, and convinced she’s just murdered one of the most powerful men in town, she and her best friend Matt flee into the storm… only to be caught by the men who should have been protecting her all along.
After the truth is buried under a veil of lies, the judge sentences them to ten years of service in the Thandroanian military—an unprecedented punishment that lands them at Scion Military Academy.
Thrown into a world of dragons, spell casters, and spies—Annalise must become a weapon if she has any hope of surviving the illusion-warped war raging along the kingdom’s southern border after graduation.
*** Veiled is the first book in the Shadowed Veil series, a dark romantasy rife with spies, secrets, and seduction. With a strong-willed FMC, dark humor, kick-your-feet banter, more easter eggs than you can count, and cliff hangers that will make you want to throw your book across the room, this series is perfect for fans of Avalon Tower, Fourth Wing, and Enigma.***
I received this book, as an ARC, from the author. Thank you Cooper James.
Wow! This book. I didn't know what to expect going in: another war college; another "dragon book". It seemed like it would just be the same as all the other books out there. I can admit when I'm wrong. I was wrong.
The FMC, Annalise, has been a victim of abuse from her sheriff father her whole life. One night, without spoiling too much, things escalate to a point where she and her best friend Matt end up on the run. After they're caught, they're sentenced to attend Scion Military Academy. We follow Annalise as she navigates and learns the different tracks of study. There's strong character development There's dragons, magic, and everything in between. There's also bullying. Please check the TW.
This book hits the ground running and just ropes you in. This is a "just one more chapter" book, when you're trying to find a good stopping point at 2am. Cooper James just really knocked this one out of the park. It does end on a cliffhanger. I NEED the 2nd book NOW.
Found family Dragons Touch her and ☠️ Spice 🌶🌶🌶 Academy setting Magic and potions
I received this as an ARC to read and provide my honest review. I received no compensation for this review, it is my own thoughts and reactions.
When I saw the “War college with dragon riders” I was worried I would find a spin off of another popular book in that trope. NOPE. This book is its own plot without feeling like reading a repeat.
This book broke the mold for the stereotypical FMC. Annalise is not the girl who lets anything break her, she continues to push forward in any obstacle and find the positive side. Annalise is her own hero first.
The banter in this book is top tier! Annalise and Matt have such an interesting relationship; they are the found family that feels natural and not forced in a book.
I think I need a neck brace from the whiplash in this book. The plot is definitely twisty and will keep you turning the page to find out what happens next.
I can’t wait for book two. Seriously, you have no idea the way Cooper James will tear your heart out while laughing. I need to know what happens next.
Excuse me! That ending ... And now I have to wait?!
This was such an amazing book. Action from the very first page, the pacing felt natural and the detail was top notch. Background for our FMC gets sprinkled in everywhere so it's not just one huge chunk of development, relationships are developed naturally and the friendships don't feel forced.
You get to learn a lot about the War in Thandoran and some of the tactics used by the Clowessian army. The magic of this world is int resting, some of it tied to dragons, some of it to spells, and some of it to potions and runes. There is set up that feels like its for the next book that only gets brought up once so paying attention to the little details is important.
The spice in this book was stunning a good 4-4.5 peppers. Though our MMC has left me questioning if he deserves Annalise. This book does touch on some heavier topics so please check your triggers. I would 100% recommend reading this if you enjoy dragon riders, fantasy wars, scheming and spies, found family and an FMC who has seen the worst but still believes the best in most people.
This book came out swinging and never let up. From the very first chapter, the tension had me in a chokehold, and I was completely powerless to resist. It delivers everything I crave in a fantasy read—dragons and bonds, a fierce FMC who refuses to break, layered magic and spells, a brutal military academy, razor-sharp banter, ride-or-die friendships, found family, impossible trials, and an enemies-to-lovers dynamic that crackles with heat. And yes… the spice? Absolutely scorching.
The character development was so satisfying. Every chapter peeled back another layer, revealing secrets, motives, and emotional depth that made the world feel richer and the stakes even higher. I loved how the backstory unfolded naturally, rewarding you with just enough each time to keep you desperate for more.
This story dragged me through every emotion—anticipation, heartbreak, hope, and full-on obsession. Just when I thought I had the ending figured out, Cooper James flipped the script with a twist I did not see coming and a cliffhanger so wild I’m still recovering. Jaw = on the floor. Heart = not okay.
Book two cannot come soon enough because I am already feral for what happens next.
READ THIS BOOK!!! Please read this book! You will not be disappointed. 5 ⭐️ is not enough! Remember how the details and magic we all fell in love with at Hogwarts? And dragons and military academy of Basgiath? Veiled has them BOTH with a touch of Mr and Mrs Smith. Annalise is a kickass FMC who has been through a lot ( check your TW). But Matt, her best friend, has been by her side. When her dad takes things too far, she and Matt pay the price and are sent to Scion Academy. I absolutely loved everything about this book.- world building, action, pacing. Perfect. Sasha and Matt are fantastic friends and found family. Anytime Matt starts a story in a chapter, I know I'm going to laugh. The reader is right there with Annalise with her classes. They're richly detailed. The teachers themselves are hilarious, too. I mean, poisoning your students 🤣. I'm still out on who will be our MMC. We have 2 interesting choices with POVs from both. But that cliffhanger ending was brutal (check TW). How can we end things like that?! Thank you for choosing me to be an ARC Reader.
This book had me intrigued from the first page. This book kept my attention and I honestly remember everything that happened in this book. This is my first Dark Fantasy Romance and I am so glad I read this book. It kept me on the edge if my seat the entire time. I have laughed, cried and honestly debated on yeeting my kindle across the room. (Of course readers know that this is a sign of a great book and even a greater series). It definitely gives Harry Potter mixed with Fourth Wing vibes! This was a great book and I cannot wait for the other books of this series to come out. I will forever be a Cooper James fan! You will not be disappointed when you read this book!!! Definitely would rate it 10 stars if I could!!!! If you love: just enough spice, a great plot, military academy, ex best friends, funny moments between friends and sometimes enemies, and dragons. Need i say more?!?!
First of all thank you so much for the ARC! Second of all, F you, I need the second book now 😭😭 This had similar vibes to fourth wing but totally different at the same time. I can barely talk about anything without giving spoilers. It was a little dark, spicy, and our FMC is such a badass with a hilarious personality too. I love that her childhood best friend isn't secretly in love with her LIKE SO MANY BOOKS. This was fun, heart breaking, dark, compelling, and over way too soon. It's perfect. I want to cry myself to sleep now just because it's over 🥲. I love you Cooper James my Queen 👑
Okay but this book??? Instant top-tier author status.
From page one, I was ready to know what happened next, the drama, the emotions, the grip this story had on me. Annalise is an absolute badass FMC; everything she’s endured shattered my heart, but it also forged her into something fierce. I loved Matt and Sasha (everyone deserves best friends like that), have a very real love-hate relationship with Aiden, and the dragon? Hilarious some of my favorite lines came from him and Matt. Add in villains I wouldn’t be mad about seeing mysteriously vanish, spice that is very much spicing, and a plot that is indeed plotting… easy 5⭐️ read. I need the next book immediately.
This story wastes no time—it throws you straight into the action and never lets up. It was too good. The world-building? Incredible. The pacing? Flawless. The characters? Completely unforgettable. It delivered everything I love in a romantasy: fiercely protective (and hilarious) bonded dragons, a brutal military academy, found family, enemies to lovers, delicious banter and a true ride-or-die bestie.
Annalise is the kind of FMC I adore—fierce, resilient, and unbreakable despite a lifetime of abuse. She’s confident, sexy, and an absolute badass. Watching her refuse to bend, no matter what’s thrown at her, was everything.
And Aiden… honestly, what do I even say? The emotional whiplash that man put me through was unreal. I had to physically set my Kindle down and process.
But Matt? He owns my whole heart. Possibly my favorite ride-or-die best friend of all time. He is Annalise’s rock in every sense, always in her corner, no questions asked. Their friendship is pure gold, and he must be protected at all costs.
The side characters added so much life and heart to the story, and the found family dynamic was executed beautifully. But that ending?? Absolutely criminal. I am not okay. I need book two immediately. Like… yesterday.

“I'm going to devour your pussy until you forget every other man's name that's tried what's mine."
“You're making me fall for you with every fucking breath I take.”
“I find myself wanting to throw everything I've worked for away, so I don't miss a single moment with you.”
This book!!! This book has a little bit of everything I love from a fantasy book! It has spells, dragons, bonding, magic, obstacles & other tests/challenges, banter, flirtation, found family, and more. But please check the TW’s before reading because there are definitely some dark scenes that depict SA, un-aliving, and abuse.
Annalise has a horrible father who is the sheriff of South Hollow. The whole town looks up to him. But behind closed doors, he’s nothing more than an extremely abusive drunk. The book starts off with so much intensity & it never slows down.
Matt is Annalise’s best friend who has always been there to comfort her in the aftermath of her dad’s wrath. Because of something that happens (don’t want to spoil anything), Matt and Annalise are sent to Scion Military Academy. At this academy, they will take classes & learn which path they will go down to serve the King.
I love how the author went into detail describing each class, and all of the challenges they had to face. The dragon bonding scene was written so beautifully, I think it may be my favorite part of the book!!
Annalise meets Aiden while there, and one thing leads to them becoming enemies, until another situation happens and she can’t help but fall for him while they go undercover as newlyweds for one of their tests.
So much more happens after this. From this point on in the story, I was not able to put the book down. At one point, my heart was shattered. Hearts got shattered in the story and I could feel the pain coming from the characters!! I stayed up until 6am to finish it. And then I couldn’t sleep because THAT CLIFFHANGER!! Oh my gosh, what a cliffhanger. I cannot wait to read the next one!! I’m dying to see how the story picks back up!
I especially loved the bond between Annalise & Matt. And the newfound friendship between her & Sasha as well. All the different characters flowed so perfectly into the story & the world building was great! Annalise, she’s the perfect representation of a broken soul who turns into a bada** female and overcomes the things that were holding her back. And we love to see that in a book 👏🏻 And Captain Korr…I was definitely expecting more from him in the story and I have a feeling it’ll be coming in book two!🤭
I went in ready for “another dragon war college.” I came out emotionally unwell.
Annalise’s story starts dark. The abuse from her father is not glossed over, so please check trigger warnings. When everything explodes and she and her best friend Matt are forced into Military Academy, the story just takes off. Dragons. Magic tracks. Bullying. Twists that leave you in knots.
Annalise is not a fragile FMC. She bends and adapts, but she doesn't break. "They will not break me. they will not win. they are playing into my plan: not me into theirs."
And Matt? Elite ride or die energy. Their friendship felt natural and grounded. Then there’s Aiden. Raven hair, tattoo sleeve, possessive chaos. I loved him, hated him, and wanted to shake him.
Yes, it sits in the same lane as other dragon academy books, but it feels grittier and more personal. And that ending? Rude. I need book two immediately.
Going into this ARC blind was the best decision. No spoilers, no fan art, no expectations—just me and this absolute ROLLERCOASTER of a story.
I’ll be honest: starting out I thought it would be a copy and paste of books before, there were moments where I was stressing out, thinking “Wait, is this actually happening?!” I wasn’t sure if I loved the direction it was going, but I couldn't put it down. I was officially hooked. The author was clearly doing something right.
If you were a fan of Blood and Betrayals, pick this one up - which is not the book I thought I would equate it to!
THAT ENDING THOUGH. 💀 I literally turned the page expecting another chapter and was met with the most brutal cliffhanger. I am currently sitting in my feelings and need book two immediately!
Veiled has all the things and makes you feel all the feels too! I laughed out loud, got teary eyed and angry on multiple occasions throughout the book. It is written so well that you can connect with all the main characters and you will fall in love with some instantly, while you want to confront others about their actions. This book is full of determination, spice, military academy, found family, bantering, dragon bonds, bullying, best friends, love and so much more! Once I started I could not put it down. Author Cooper James outdid herself with Veiled and I 100% cannot wait until book 2 comes out. This book is a must read for 2026 and it comes out on March 2nd, so mark your calendars. PS if you love Fourth Wing you will absolutely love this book, because it definitely gives off Fourth Wing vibes.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I would give this 6 stars if I could.
Veiled is hands down one of the best dark romantasy books I’ve read in a long time and is officially god-tier in my personal library. It lives rent-free in my head, and I fear it will become my entire personality once more people discover it.
From page one, this book refuses to feel like a “setup” novel. The world-building is rich without being heavy, the magic and politics feel lived-in, and the characters immediately feel real, flawed, and deeply human. I didn’t just like them, I felt like I made friends through this book (and I desperately need a Matt in my life).
The relationships are messy, raw, and charged with tension. The banter is elite, actual laugh-out-loud, giggle-and-snort banter and the emotional stakes hit hard. There are lighthearted moments of found family and humor, but make no mistake: this is a dark book that explores heavy physical, emotional, and psychological themes. Please check triggers.
It’s fast-paced, addictive, emotionally damaging in the best way, and absolutely impossible to put down. I was throwing my Kindle across the room and then immediately staying up way too late because I had to know what happened next.
Yes, there are dragons. They aren’t front-and-center yet, but they matter and I have a feeling they’re about to become everything.
If you like fierce, damaged FMCs who refuse to break, war colleges, morally messy choices, high-stakes tension, and stories that look at Fourth Wing and say “hold my beer” on trauma, you need this book in your life.
And yes… it ends on a cliffhanger. I am not okay.
Favorite quotes: “War is never fair; it’s not designed to be. And neither is this class.” “You aren’t the first monster to scare me; you won’t be the last.”
Thank you, Cooper James and Dear Future Publisher for allowing me to read this one first. I will be forever grateful!
This book was AMAZING! I couldn't put it down once I started! It kept me on the edge of my seat so many times and things definitely didn't happen the way I thought they would. Can NOT wait for the next book! @cooper.james.author
Thank you so much to Cooper for accepting me as an ARC reader — such an amazing opportunity!
This book had me obsessed from the very first sentence to the final page. The relationships, the banter, and the emotional growth between characters — especially Annalise — are beautifully written and deeply engaging.
Just when you think you like a character, they turn around and do something that makes you want to burn them with dragon fire. The emotional whiplash? Immaculate.
And can we talk about the spice? 🌶️ Hands down the best I’ve read in a VERY long time — had me blushing and giggling like a schoolgirl.
Veiled gave me strong Fourth Wing vibes, but with a more modern twist — and I loved every second of it. That ending left me absolutely speechless, shaking, and emotionally unwell in the best way.
I cannot wait to see what book two has in store! 🐉🔥📖
I absolutely loved this book & I'm already going crazy because I can't wait until the next book is out! I was hooked on page 1 & the book never lost me. I felt the feels with this book both the good and the bad. This is a story of resilience. When the world seems to be against them, somehow, they begin to thrive even through the struggles they encounter. There are great characters in this story, with lots of witty banter that you will absolutely love, as well as some characters you will come to hate. You will also discover found family, love, best friends, hurt, lies, decit, determination, bullying, spice, and military academy training to become a weapon. The strength to overcome past trauma. There is also magic, spell casting, and Dragon's. Yes, Dragons & Riders. When you think you know what is going to happen Cooper James will pull the rug right out from under you & leave you with a cliffhanger that leaves you needing the next book, just so you know what happens. I believe this will be one of the next must-read books of 2026. Oh, and I did say Dragon's right!
**I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**
Genre: Dark Urban Fantasy Dual-POV First Person Debut Author Cliffhanger
Tropes: -Military Academy -Dragons -Found Family -Enemies-to-Lovers *(Kind of - see 'Negatives') -Survivor FMC
**Read the trigger warnings, they are on page, explicit, and can be long scenes**
First Thoughts (Adding this to my favorites, can't wait for book 2): 2026 has been delivering. I hated putting this book down to go to bed, and as soon as I was able to pick it back up, I devoured the rest of the book in one sitting. I haven't read too many dark romances or dark fantasies yet, and aside from a graphic scene nearing the end of the book and numerous descriptive references or flash backs to DV, the book doesn't seem to get all that dark yet (think Emily McEntire level dark, maybe a fraction darker because a few triggers are a bit darker). I would refer to another review to find a better gage of dark, but as a not-normally-a-dark-reader, I thought it was fine. I have not read Fourth Wing to see how this compares with similar tropes.
Spice: The spice is open-door, with multiple explicit scenes.
Writing Style (easy to get immersed in, well paced, lacks foreshadowing): Easy to follow, mature, and well crafted for a debut author. The writing isn't hand holding, but also isn't exhausting to keep up with. However, there isn't a lot of foreshadowing if you like foreshadowing in your book - even teeny tiny crumbles of a foreshadow.
Characters (strong, memorable, defined): The characters were well developed, all with differing, unique personalities. Our FMC is strong and capable, but she isn't a Mary Sue. She has her weaknesses and challenges. She's believable and enjoyable to follow around. The side characters really leave an impression, all having different quirks and traits. I don't quite have a favorite side character yet, they're all really fun. They really helped develop a sense that there was more going on around the world than just needing to show up on page when called for, they had lives outside of the pages too. The MMC wasn't my favorite, he wasn't bad, he just wasn't for me. However, I'm still really invested in his story and watching how he develops. I am eager for book two to see what happens with him- I have my hopes for what I want to happen! *crosses fingers*
World Building (light, easy to keep up with): The world building is light, with some familiarity. We have dragons, magic, and magic weapons, but we also have cars, cell phones, and recognizable music. I really loved the blend. There is clear conflict in the world to drive our plot and motivations without getting too deep or confusing.
Story (well paced, unique): I am a sucker for academy settings, so this book immediately grabbed my attention. We get to experience the academy and classes with the FMC, either solo or as she shares classes with the rest of the characters, and watch as she develops over time. The pacing wasn't fast, but it wasn't slow either. Chapters were a nice size to easily tell yourself "Just One More Chapter", which may of contributed to screwing up my sleep schedule.
Positives: -I did not want to put this book down at all, and now I'm impatient for book 2. -I hate cliffhangers and waiting months between books -The characters all had their own voice and stood out in their own way, I hope they get more page time later in the series as well so we can watch them develop and grow as well -Expect the unexpected, I'm curious to see the choices Cooper James makes and what direction she takes this series.
Negatives: -I wouldn't consider this a true enemies to lovers, despite that it's being labeled an enemies to lovers. The flip from enemies to lovers is relatively sudden as well. -The plot twist at the end didn't make too much sense, there wasn't a lot of supporting evidence throughout the book to allow the reader to make any predictions that could land on this twist.
Recommend: I would recommend this book to anyone who does not get triggered by DV or SA. Both triggers are graphic, and only you know your own limits. I devoured this book and will probably reread this when book 2 comes out. Definitely adding Cooper James to authors to follow.
Where do I EVEN begin?! - this book was SOOOOOOOO good.
What isn't to love? Dragons, the BEST of best friends, and more new best friends forming the BEST found family EVER, magic (though we haven't gotten to see very much of it in use yet), a couple characters that you *REALLY* love to HATE - like I would drive 1000 miles to help take care of them myself if I was lucky enough to be one of the aforementioned best friends. The plot, characters, romance, etc is soooo good, even if a bit messy at times, and with PLENTY of fun, wtf, and also f'd up turns - but it's SOOOOOO freaking good -I NEEEEEEEEEEED book 2 through 15 like RIGHT NOW (fully aware the series is likely a much more realistic 3-5ish, but a guy can dream can't he? :P )
That all said, I need me some answers - Aiden..... what...the....f? that's all I am gonna say, I don't wanna spoil - but that better not be the end of things, and there better be some SERIOUSLY good explanations. That ending - the cliffhanger - like c'mon - what the hell?! - you can't go leaving us like that - and that twist to 13 levels of hell kinda f'd up - I need to see her finish that and be ok, have Matt and Sasha and company be there for her. Again, I need book 2 like right this second :P - waiting months for the next ARC is gonna SUCK, and even longer if I have to wait for 2 to drop.
Also, her and Matt's home town and families - they need some addressing at some point in my humble opinion - but I also wanna know more about the war, why can't she find specific numbers of any losses or missing citizens, why do some records contradict others, is the war legit, or is there a coverup going on? are the citizens being kept in the dark intentionally - for their own good or nefarious purposes? Are they the good guys, or the bad guys? We need to know more - but I hope that worldbuilding and lore is going to be fun to dive into and explore more as Annalise progresses in her time at the Scion Academy and all.
Gods the book was sooooo dang good - JUST the right amount of spice, dark fuckery (pardon my French so to speak, but I can't think of a better way to describe some of the more messed up stuff in her past and a few points in the book), the BEST friends, found family, romance, DRAGONS!!! - did I mention the dragons - of the ones that we meet that are the most memorable, one is a BIG puppy, one's a gorgeous emerald cat, and one is a big bad TERRIFYINGLY moody and tempermental Alpha meanie who's actually a big ole softy - a couple others jokingly like Lee more than their own bonded rider which is hilarious - and brings me to THE BANTER - how did I NOT mention that earlier - the banter is GLORIOUS, HILLARIOUS, and I need more of it! - the amount of times I was literally laughing out loud and just absolutely enjoying Matt, Lee, Josh, James, Sasha, Antonio, etc - the whole gang is AMAZING
Also, on the subject of banter and how awesome Sasha is, the humor in here is PEAK - one specific quote that comes to mind, or rather snippet of a scene, is Sasha taking notes at their first Dragon Riding class and literally scribbling, ""Blinking. Pupils. Got it. Don't Die." Matt hides a grin, "Solid Summary."" - there's MANY other moments, but that one was PERFECTLY timed comedy :P
I literally cannot recommend this enough - I need book 2 asap, will 10000% be buying at least a couple copies of this book/series over time I imagine.
I received this book, as an ARC, from the author. Thank you Cooper James!
From the very first page, Veiled hooked me and never let go. The opening was a punch to the gut in the best possible way, immediately drawing me into a world where dragons, magic, and modern vibes collide in the most unexpected way. Think competitive obstacle courses, cell phones, and pop culture, seamlessly blended with high-stakes fantasy and world-building that feels rich without being overwhelming. If you loved Fourth Wing, Veiled has a similar energy but stands confidently on its own—sharp, immersive, and completely unputdownable. Cooper James has an incredible knack for pacing. The plot is fast enough to keep you on the edge of your seat but never feels rushed or confusing. The tension builds steadily, and when the twists hit, they’ll knock the wind out of you. The stakes escalate in ways that will leave you guessing, without feeling chaotic, and by the end, you’ll be emotionally wrecked—in the best possible way. Ana’s strong, independent, and doesn’t need anyone to define her, especially not a romantic relationship. She may want love, but she absolutely owns her strength, her choices, and her independence. Watching her navigate this dangerous world, taking on challenges and embracing her power, was a satisfying journey that made me root for her every step of the way. And her friendships? Incredible. The bond between her and her best friend was so emotionally grounded and layered, bringing so much depth beyond the romance and action. Now, let’s talk romance. The tension? Immaculate. The emotional intensity? Off the charts. The yearning? Physically painful in the best way. The slow-burn chemistry between the FMC and MMC is electric, and as their walls crack open, the emotional payoff is worth every agonizing moment. When they choose each other? It's like fireworks. The dual POV adds so much richness, showing both sides of the tension and creating an emotional rollercoaster I couldn’t get off of. And just when you think you have everything figured out, James throws in twists and reveals that will have your heart in your throat. The romance, the betrayal, the stakes—they keep you guessing without feeling like a whirlwind of chaos. It’s emotional devastation in the best possible way. If you love fierce, damaged FMCs who refuse to break, slow-burn tension, morally gray characters, and plot twists that hurt so good, Veiled is your next read. Dragons, magic that is fully grounded in reality, high-stakes missions, emotional devastation, and a cliffhanger that will leave you wanting more Overall, Veiled is addictive, fast-paced, and impossible to put down. The characters, the world, the tension—it's all built to perfection. And by the end, I was completely emotionally unwell in the best possible way. Trust me, you need this book in your life, and the only thing you’ll regret is having to wait for the next one.
If you’re a fan of Fourth Wing and Sarah J. Maas but a bit darker, this book could be for you. It has the military academy, dragons — with mind telepathy between rider and dragon, power given to the rider from the dragon, found family, heart‑pounding and spicy love scenes (these are very ooh‑aah type), humorous best‑friend banter, magic systems, and if you love Easter eggs, I believe there could be quite a few in this first book! So if you love to note‑take and try to work out what could be happening moving forward, then this book is for you!
The book is quite dark at times and there are quite a few trigger warnings you need to read before commencing.
Now onto the book — wow, oh wow! I really enjoyed it so much I’m going back to read a second time so I can make sure I didn’t miss anything that may lead to answers in future books. The FMC, Annalise, is downright heroic and such a strong character — she does not start out weak at all; she is a badass! Her best friend Matt is her rock and the best friend I would want to have if I could choose, and the banter these two have is hilarious.
The love interests in this book aren’t your cookie‑cutter style either, and even by the end of book one you’re not sure if you think it will be one person or a different one moving forward she will be with. ( I know who I'm rooting for :) )
Now, in saying this book is like the other popular dragon book, lol, this one does differ in other ways so you’re not going to experience all the same things. Yes, it’s in a military academy and has dragons with telepathy with their riders, but it does have quite a lot of differences in the storyline.
The one thing I loved in this book that I hadn’t read before is the Ghost‑walking class new recruits need to take — it made me think of James Bond spy‑type stuff; you need to read it to get it!
Oh, and if you want twists and turns, well let me tell you, there are plenty and some you won’t see coming at all! This book also has a huge cliff hanger at the end that will not only make you very emotional but will make you go Nooooooo! — I need to know now, don’t let this be the end of book 1!
This book will have you feeling many ranges of emotions throughout from rage, sadness, anger, love, lust, glee and happiness and at times things are quite brutal so be prepared for a roller-coaster!
Rating: 4.5 stars. I can’t wait for the second instalment so I can find out what happens next! This is going to be a hyped book, I’m sure, for 2026!
I received this as an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a honest review.
This book is RAW and EMOTIONAL! It is REAL, SUSPENSEFUL, and CHILLING! Yet is also ROMANTIC, HEART WARMING, and so, so FUNNY!
Cooper James does an amazing job in creating a world where you have the magical academy, in this case Scion Military Academy, and magic in the forms of classes, spells, and DRAGONS! However, she does not stop there. She entwines modern real world elements of our current day living. The two mesh together so well in her book it is the best of both worlds for readers of fantasy and reality based fiction alike.
The Main Female Character in this book is Annalise Corvin a 20-year-old woman who leads a horrific existence through no fault of her own. Annalise is strong of will yet carries emotional baggage from her ongoing trauma. In the beginning she is surviving day to day with the help of her best friend Matt Reyes. He is her protector, her friend, her “emotional teddy bear”. Yet Annalise is no scared, weak girl. Yes it all affects her, yet she learned to never give up, to keep pushing forward. After a horrific event they both end up at Scion Military Academy.
At Scion her life changes in so many ways. Annalise grows and finds a family in her new friends. They are perhaps the first true friends she has ever had besides Matt. She meets adults in the form of her teachers and they are hilarious yet tough on her. Think college with magic! As she goes through her first year the plot twists and turns in suspenseful ways that keep readers on their toes. I laughed, I cried, I cringed, I dreamt of the world when I went to sleep! Perhaps one of my favorite parts was when she met Tyr who I know will most likely play a larger part in Book 2. I will say the ending was one I was not prepared for and chilled me to the bone. It was one I was in no way expecting yet fits in the story perfectly.
This book had me captured from Chapter 1. I could not wait to read more and in fact, I did marathon readings to 1:00 and 2:00 AM on two different nights! I ended the book crying, screaming, and wanting more. I need more!
Get this book when it comes out on 3/2/2026 and you will NOT regret it. However, please read the trigger warnings before starting as there are many intense scenes. I will end by saying that there is comfort in the knowledge that this is only Book 1 so yes there will be more. I am very honored I was chosen to ARC this book and it is now one of my favorites.
I received a free copy of this book as an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I was hooked from the very first line. Any book that opens with that kind of punch immediately earns my attention and this one never let it go.
What I absolutely loved is how seamlessly the author blends modern 2026 vibes (cell phones, pop culture nods, competitive obstacle-course energy) with dragons, magic, spells, and high-stakes fantasy. It feels current and grounded while still delivering that epic, immersive world-building fantasy readers crave. It gave me strong Fourth Wing energy but in a way that feels inspired, not imitative. Similar vibes, completely its own identity.
The pacing is fantastic. Not so slow that you lose interest, but never rushed or confusing. The timeline progression felt intentional and smooth.
The FMC? A certified badass. She may want love, but she absolutely does not need it and that distinction matters. She owns her strength, her choices, her independence. I loved that she isn’t defined by a relationship and doesn’t lose herself in romance. She stands on her own two feet 100%.
The friendships were another standout for me. The bond between her and her best friend felt authentic, layered, and emotionally grounded. Those dynamics added depth beyond just romance and action.
Now let’s talk romance.
The tension? Immaculate. The emotional intensity? Off the charts. The yearning? Physically painful in the best way.
There are scenes that are romantic, scenes that are fiery, and scenes that are emotionally devastating. The author writes vulnerability with striking realism.
The dual POV adds so much depth. Watching emotional walls crack from both sides made the slow burn progression incredibly satisfying. When the characters start fully choosing each other? Absolutely electric.
And just when you think you have things figured out….nope. Twists. Reveals. Emotional gut punches. The stakes escalate in a way that keeps you guessing without feeling chaotic.
Overall, this book delivers: ✨ Dragons ✨ Magic & elite training ✨ Slow-burn tension ✨ High-stakes missions ✨ Emotional devastation ✨ “She’s mine” energy ✨ And a cliffhanger that will leave you staring at a wall questioning your life choices
By the end, I was emotionally unwell in the best possible way. I laughed, I gasped, I yelled, and yes, I ugly cried.
If you love fantasy with modern edge, powerful female leads, intense romance, and plot twists that hurt so good….add this to your TBR immediately.
I will be impatiently waiting for the next book because my soul is not okay.
I was granted an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, so here goes.
As a reminder, this book had some dark moments in it, so make sure you read the trigger warnings and you're ok with them before you start!
Can I have a little rant before i get to the review? Well i'm going to anyway. WHAT KIND OF CLIFFHANGER IS THAT?! I need the next one now!
This book follows Annalise and her life after her and her best friend Matt are punished for defending themselves from her father. It's how she finds herself in the last place she expected. It has old drama, it has new drama. There's friendships, both old and new. We have romance with some spicy scenes, but most importantly we have dragons!
For the first few chapters of this book I was a little lost. It took me a while to figure out where and what was happening, however once we fully got to the academy it all started clicking into place.
Annalise isn't your typical FMC. Yes she's strong, and yes she's faced abuse, and yes she keeps going, but for lack of a better way to word it, she is human in this book. She's not some fantastical person who you could never become, she could be me or you, flaws and all so when i was reading this i felt like I could have been her.
The friendship between her and Matt? It's amazing and for me something I almost envy. Who doesn't want someone who gives you unconditional love and support? It makes me want to give my own brother a big hug and tell him I love him. The banter is fun and I even laughed out loud a few times!
You never quite know what's going to happen next, it's a long hilly and curving path from start to finish, almost enough to give you whiplash! Some twists you see coming, others completely blindside you! And don't get me started on the ending!
Overall this was a very enjoyable read. It had nice flow, it wasn't overly detailed when it didnt have to be, but it was detailed enough when it needed to be. The characters were fun (or made you want to strangle them), and the shenanigans just made me laugh. There were some dark moments that had me on the edge of my seat and others that had me rolling my eyes over. Overall a book I would recommend and I will be for sure following the author impatiently waiting in book 2!
Thank you Cooper for this early copy! All parts of this review are of my honest opinion 💚
Veiled is book 1 in the Shadowed Veil series. In this book you’ll find dragons, found family, banter, spies, secrets, a traumatic past, and growth. Great for when you want something that gives you an emotional sting! Please note that you should look at the trigger warnings before opening the book. Your mental health always comes first 💓
I know you might be thinking that the book taking place in an academy with dragons would mean it's so similar to others with the same background. But I can tell you that Veiled is entirely its own story. It is unique and packs a powerful punch. And honestly, I felt so refreshed reading the book. I felt like I was allowed to really love the characters who deserve it while hating the others (iykyk) while also enjoying the plot. I didn't sit there and compare it to other books like I've done when reading a book that may be a little too similar to another. Like I genuinely saw and enjoyed this book as its own little major picture in my head.
Speaking of the characters, Annalise and Matt's relationship is probably one of my favorites that I've read. Their banter is hilarious and you can feel how they care for another. They are truly family without being blood and I love them so much. And I do like Aiden eben after what happened at the beginning until we got to that one scene. He better have a reason why for what he did and said 😑
For the story itself, I LOVE the descriptions of everything. The details put me directly into the classrooms and showed me how each class/professor works. Like the simulations and assignments were perfect! And we can't forget about the details for the end of the book. It was so heartbreaking and for it to just end there was gut-wretching. I don’t know if I could ever get over that. Like why Cooper?! WHY?!?! 😭 Please, please, please give us book two! 😭
*definitely rambled on, but I hope it makes sense. Literally have so much that I want to say, but I don't want to give anything away and my thoughts are mess because of that cliffhanger 🤕
I’m behind on this one. It was hard for me. I loved the MFC Lee. She has the best best friend Matt and she makes more in the academy when her and Matt are forced to attend after a something horrible happens.
Her whole journey at the academy is a little insane. I have to say my favorite is the banter between the man group of friends and her dragon. Where I originally thought the school would be nothing but rules and possibly more beatings for Lee it actually turns out to be a place for her to discover herself and how much strength she truly has. She is definitely determined.
There are a lot of secrets at the academy and a lot of evil. I think that’s where I struggled….. The premise of the book is amazing. Do I feel like too much was pushed into this book at once yes. There’s just so much going on. Which was frustrating since it is book one and the group is supposed to really just be taking off on their journey.
Now as for the love interest. I really wanted to love him, but I hated his character development. I can honestly say I hope she doesn’t end up with him. He doesn’t have red flags like other books (where red flags are good) he straight up doesn’t deserve the girl! Now I may be misinterpreting, but the dude was so love sick then bam. So unless he was trying to save her life, and even then I don’t know if I would want them together.
I also felt like we got build up on their relationship and then it would go cold get hot then go cold. I forgot they were dating. He didn’t feel like a regular character.
The book seriously has so much going on.
Positives: The main characters (and I don’t include the boyfriend) are phenomenal! I love their friendship. The idea of the academy is secret class/ tracks love. While at the school it was good. It had drama and intrigue.
Negative: I covered some above. Did not like the love interest at all. Trigger that should be listed is not sexual abuse, it is r@pe! I don’t have a problem with triggers but the scene is a lot! I have read some hard ones. So be warned.
“Hey big guy, we were told to think of this like a speed date, so I should probably let you know up front that I am open to try new things, but burning is on my hard-no list.”
This book was more than I ever excepted it to be. From the first page, it pulls you in and doesn’t let go. At the very beginning you are introduced to Annalise “Lee” being brutally abused by her father, to her best friend Matt, coming to her rescue which drops them both into a military camp. The reader falls fast and hard for the special and unique bond between them. From fun and hilarious banter of best friends to fierce protectiveness and an enduring love for one another, you soon find yourself absolutely envious of Matt and Lee’s relationship. Soon you meet other characters that they become friends with that as the reader you immediately like and laugh along side their humor within their group to other characters you are hoping they get whats coming to them. One character portrays being a little off raising red flags with their smothering quick attachment and then another character you get glimpses of that you are intrigued with and are hoping to learn more about in the next book. Not only does the book have magic that fuels your fantasy needs, the spiciness leaves you fanning your face, and the dragons!!! Who doesn’t love dragons bonding with humans!?!? The book ends with a conclusion that you didn’t see coming and you don’t know what will happen next, unanswered questions on what direction the characters lives will go, how far will a dragon go to protect what is his, and what new spicy relationships might transpire? This book makes you pining for more as you are left counting down the days to where you can pick up where you were left in the mud wanting to know what happens next. Read it friends, your toes will curl in a delicious way!!
Veiled is the kind of book that quietly dares you to close it… and then laughs when you can’t.
Your co-MMCs exist in a world built on secrets, loyalty, and lines that were never meant to stay uncrossed. One is protective, dangerous, and always 10 steps ahead. The other is calculating, possessive, and makes decisions that absolutely should send you running—but instead you’re like, “Okay but… Why is this hot?”
The FMC is strong, but not in a girlboss, punch-first-ask-later way. Her strength is hard earned in survival and adaptability. While she continues learning how to maneuver inside a dangerous dynamic all while trying not to lose herself completely.
This book thrives on secrecy and your own captivation in the plot more than nonstop spice—which honestly makes the intimate moments hit that much harder when they happen. You’re not getting soft romance; you’re getting charged looks, dangerous proximity, and the constant feeling that something could implode at any second. PS, it might be you, so clench your thighs!
And let’s be clear: The MMC does not suddenly become a golden retriever. The romance is twisted on purpose—and if that makes you uncomfortable, read it anyways because this book is worth it!
If your shelf enjoys: morally gray-to-black MMCs, obsession and affection, stories that make you whisper “I need therapy” after…welcome home.
⚠️ Trigger warnings are there for your protection. I pride myself is reading trigger warnings like a menu, but I needed a min a couple of times myself. So… Read them. Respect them. Protect your peace.
Final thoughts: Did I enjoy it? Yes. Did I side-eye myself a little for enjoying it? Also yes. Will this live rent-free in my brain? Duh… absolutely. 😌🖤
I was provided an eARC by the author for an honest review. I went into Veiled excited—but I did not expect it to hit me the way it did. This book is fast-paced, addictive, and perfectly balanced between romance, spice, and dark urban fantasy elements. The kind of read that makes you cancel plans, stay up way too late, and think about it long after you’re done. At its core, Veiled follows Annalise, who has spent her life surviving her father— sheriff of South Hollow. After one violent night changes everything, she’s conscripted to Scion Military Academy. Dragons, magic, spies, and shadowy forces all collide while attending—but make no mistake, this is a romance-forward story. And it works beautifully. Annalise is a standout FMC: complex, resilient, funny, and deeply relatable. Her strength feels earned, shaped by hardship, and her insecurities make her feel real. The character development across the board is excellent—the side characters are just as compelling as the main characters, and I loved every second of their dynamic. The banter (especially between Annalise and her best friend Matt) is absolutely top-tier. While the fantasy plot takes a backseat at times, the groundwork is clearly being laid. The Easter eggs sprinkled throughout hint at a much bigger, darker story to come, and I’m already obsessed with where this series is headed. Twists, emotional punches, and a tone that’s far darker than I expected kept me on edge the entire time. And that ending? Brutal. I will be begging for book two. This is one of those books that sneaks up on you and refuses to let go. If staying up too late to finish a book tells you anything—add Veiled to your TBR immediately. Please check trigger warnings before reading. Final rating: 5 stars!
