Drawing on his insightful sermon series, renowned pastor/teacher David Jeremiah shares the comfort and hope of the Psalms and how these truths can guide believers through life's greatest challenges. He includes inspiring real-life stories of people who have struggled with terminal illness, the loss of a child, or the imprisonment of a spouse. Jeremiah interweaves his own journal entries, revealing his battle with cancer and how the Psalms helped to sustain him during the fight of his life. A Bend in the Road is an invaluable source of help and encouragement for people facing major obstacles in life.
Dr. David Jeremiah, founder of Turning Point Radio and Television Ministries and senior pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church, felt God’s calling on his life at a very early age. Born February 13, 1941 in Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Jeremiah was raised in a family deeply committed to ministry. At the age of eleven, Dr. Jeremiah and his family moved to Dayton, Ohio where his father, Dr. James T. Jeremiah, was the Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church, and in 1953 became the President of Cedarville College in Cedarville, Ohio.
As Dr. Jeremiah was sensitive to God’s leading in his life, he followed in his father’s footsteps. In 1963, Dr. Jeremiah received a Bachelor of Arts from Cedarville College. In that same year, Dr. Jeremiah married his college sweetheart, Donna Thompson who also was attending Cedarville College as a business major. He went on to earn a Masters degree in Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1967. He completed additional graduate work at Grace University and was granted the Doctor of Divinity degree from Cedarville College in 1981.
In 1969, Dr. Jeremiah began Blackhawk Baptist Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and developed a Christian school grades K through 12. In the 12 years he served as pastor, Blackhawk Baptist Church grew from 7 families to 1300 members. He also launched The Bible Hour television program.
Dr. Jeremiah heeded God’s call, and in 1981 he and his family moved to California where he became the senior pastor of Scott Memorial Baptist Church, now Shadow Mountain Community Church.
Shadow Mountain Community Church is one of the largest churches in San Diego County. It is also the home of Southern California Seminary and Christian Unified Schools.
As Dr. Jeremiah began his ministry at Shadow Mountain, he felt God’s calling to continue the broadcast ministry he started in Fort Wayne. In 1982, Turning Point Ministries became a reality.
Today, Turning Point's 30-minute radio program is heard nationally and internationally on over 1800 stations and translator/satellators. In recognition of Dr. Jeremiah’s commitment to teaching the Word of God, he received the Broadcaster of the Year Award in 1999 from the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB), in August 2002, received the Award of Merit from the Western Chapter of National Religious Broadcasters for Excellence in Broadcasting and Faithfulness in Service, and in 2006 Turning Point received the Best Radio Teaching Program Award. Dr. Jeremiah has served on the Board of Directors for the NRB since 1996.
Turning Point launched a television program in 1982 in San Diego and went nationwide in 2000. Now seen around the world through cable and satellite technology, as well as on terrestrial stations all across the United States, conservative estimates suggest that close to 200 million homes around the world have access to Dr. Jeremiah's Bible teaching each week. Turning Point Television offers a half-hour Bible study message and a full hour worship service with the same great preaching. Carried on several national and international networks such as TBN, ION, and INSP, Turning Point Television has most recently been added to Middle East TV Network and BET, the Black Entertainment Network.
Dr. Jeremiah is a sought-after conference speaker for organizations around the country. He frequently speaks at Cedarville College, Dallas Theological Seminary, Moody Bible Institute, Billy Graham Training Center, Phil Waldrep’s Senior Adult Celebrations and numerous NFL, NBA and Baseball chapels.
Along with his speaking schedule around the country, Dr. Jeremiah also finds time to fulfill another passion in his life, writing. His books are always gripping and right to the point. Some of his books include Escape the Coming Night, The Power of Encouragement, What the Bible Says About Angels, Prayer The Great Adventure, which brought him The Gold Medallion Award in 1998, God In You, Gifts from God
I’ve listened to Dr. David Jeremiah many times. This was my first book, and won’t be my last. He writes like he speaks, easy to understand but bringing a great message to help us deal with trials and tribulations of life. This was a 2.99 Kindle special.
Imagine sitting down with a friend at the end of a discouraging day or even a really bad day. You need encouragement, both that someone has walked this road before and that God's word has something to stay with you here. This is like what a good friend would do.
~ This isn't a theological treatise (though it does share some good theology) ~ This isn't a personal memoir (though the author shares some of his personal experience)
This is a book written from one sufferer to another meant to encourage and bolster you on bad days when you need gentle reminders that this road has been walked before.
Content notes: stories shared about cancer battles, the death of a child, and lives turned upside down. However, all is shared in the light of God bringing you through them.
Sometimes how a book affects you has to do with when you read it. I would recommend reading this book for anyone who is currently experiencing their own bend in the road. Jeremiah takes the reader on a journey through the book of Psalms so we can better understand how those before us dealt with difficulties in their life. He does a great job of extrapolating the larger concepts of each Psalm and applying them to our problems of today. As someone who suffered through cancer, Jeremiah brings his unique perspective to the discussion and offers much counsel from the Word of God on how we can live victoriously despite our trials and sufferings. Overall, I found the book to be uplifting and practical at the same time.
A great book for anyone facing life's changes. Lost your job, family problems, illness, etc. Written from David Jeremiah's experience with his own cancer.
Excellent book about the bends in the road our lives take and how God is there at every bend. Very relevant to my life right now after the loss of a spouse this summer.
A thoughtful book that discusses Biblical strategies for facing up to life altering difficulties
I would recommend this book to anyone who has struggled or is struggling with “insurmountable” problems, losses, or defeat. Using selected Psalms and David’s difficult circumstances as well as those of his own and those of people he knows well, Dr. Jeremiah provides his readers with hope for the hopeless and clear directions on where to find it.
It was a little slow at first but then it really started speaking to me about the character of God. It walks you through the psalms and what the background was in the life of the author. It demonstrated how we all suffer at different times in our lives and how we can all draw closer to God during those difficult times
A very inspiring companion to those struggling with cancer or any ongoing battle. Helpful insights in facing the challenges that interfere in one's life.
A book for every Christian to read. David Jeremiah does a very good job of explaining and overcoming loss and suffering through personal examples and the Psalms of David.
I just read this book during one of the difficult times in my life. Pastor David Jeremiah is so honest about his struggles and how the Bible provides so much hope to get through our crises. Yes, crises, plural. The author had received the first diagnosis in 1994 and began treatment immediately. Suddenly, when he thought he was doing well, the cancer came back in 1998. That's another bend.
Pastor Jeremiah is not alone; in this book, he includes other stories besides diseases. One poignant story was about a woman whose husband was arrested for some crime. There is nothing in any pre-marital counseling course for that. And it is not just the arrest; usually, there might be some deception involved.
This book is an encouragement to go forward; we can never go back. We have a new normal. I mean, let's look at the most recent pandemic. Are you the same person as you were before it all started in February 2020? Is your family the same? Is society the same? The answer, of course, is no. The question is now: what kind of person are you? How are you going forward? Where is your hope to keep moving forward?
Throughout it all, God is the source of hope, strength and wisdom for a Christian. When we look up at Jesus, we receive all the comfort we will never need. We might not get the answers, but we WILL get the peace and God's presence. That might be worth more than all the gold in the world.
Any person that experiences a life changing event would benefit from David Jeremiah's personal story and the stories of many others shared in his book. He enriches his story with characters from the Bible also. My husband and I both enjoyed the chapter on depression. Life throws us curve balls, we have to learn to have faith during those times, and look for the good that God can bring out of them.
This book purports to be an account of Dr.David Jeremiah's experience in dealing with cancer (from the perspective of a Christian dealing with a crisis). Dr. Jeremiah also approaches the Christian perspective of dealing with a personal crisis by using the Psalms and King David's life as examples. This is all good, but the author spent almost no time talking about his own experience in dealing with his own crisis. In this, I was disappointed.
This book was a tremendous help to me. Instead of sitting an wondering "why me?" this author helps you to look at God's perspective of the twists and turns that come into our lives. It helped me to remember that He has a plan and purpose in everything that comes our way. Whether the storm is according to His design or as a result of our choices, we can still grow and become more conformed to His image.
just bought it yesterday....he tells about the trials that he went through and how God walked with him when he was diagnosed with Lymphoma. He is the pastor of on of the biggest churchs' in California and a wonderful pastor. It was an awesome book
This is an incredibly encouraging book. If you are facing a bend in the road, whether it be health related, a death in the family, financial collapse or any other unexpected event, this book will help you face it and grow through it.
The title says it: Finding God when your world caves in. It's a bit humbling to hear D. Jeremiah as his tortuous (but victorious) bout with cancer as, "A Bend in the Road" but he does a great job of keeping things in perspective and communicating that to us!
David Jeremiah gives his perspective and advice on dealing with the curveballs life throws at us. I read it while going through a low point in my life and found it helpful and encouraging. Highly recommend.
