Jeffery Deaver knows how to hook a reader—and in this fast-paced Colter Shaw short story, he wastes no time tightening the screws.
A longtime fan of Deaver’s work, I was eager to spend more time with Shaw, and this story delivers a sharp, compact thriller built around a deadly race against the clock. When a well-funded institute dedicated to protecting journalists and authors learns that an investigative reporter has been marked for death, they put a bounty on the hitman known as the Bookkeeper. Enter Colter Shaw, never one to walk away from a lucrative reward—or a mystery.
What follows is a tense game of cat and mouse as Shaw digs into the limited NYPD investigation, studies potential targets, and begins piecing together a plan to flush out an assassin whose meticulous methods make him a formidable opponent. Shaw may be accustomed to hunting predators, but in New York he is operating well outside his comfort zone, and Deaver makes excellent use of that unfamiliar territory.
The short format works particularly well. Brief chapter-like breaks and quick-moving segments keep the pressure building, while each new revelation forces Shaw to rethink what he knows and what he still needs to uncover. Just when the path seems clear, Deaver twists it in another direction. The Bookkeeper proves to be a worthy adversary, and watching Shaw improvise his way through the danger is the real draw.
I also enjoyed the continued development of Shaw. Deaver has built him into one of his more intriguing protagonists, and this story reinforces why the character works so well. There is enough backstory to give Shaw depth without bogging down the action, while his time in New York exposes some of his vulnerabilities and keeps him from feeling invincible.
And then there is the tantalizing connection to Lincoln Rhyme. Fans of Deaver’s wider universe will appreciate the hints, even though Rhyme himself never appears. It is a small touch, but one that adds an extra layer of intrigue.
This may not be the strongest entry in the Colter Shaw series, but it is still a thoroughly entertaining, tightly constructed thriller. Deaver packs plenty of twists, tension, and clever plotting into a short space, making this an easy recommendation for fans of Shaw and a great reminder of just how effectively Deaver can deliver suspense without wasting a page.
The Shaw series continues to move in an exciting direction, and after this quick taste, I’m even more curious to see what Deaver has planned for the next full-length adventure.
