She threw him for a curveball by marking him as her mate.
Drowning in the tumultuous waters of new motherhood and trying to find her place in Ilex Creek, single mom Kasey Rogers is instantly drawn to the town’s newest resident and firefighter, James Danning, at a pick-up baseball game. Little does she know that an innocent introduction and game of catch could change everything.
Finding solace in small town life while also escaping his rejection from Minor League Baseball, James Danning is enamoured by the gorgeous single mom with a wicked fastball. He invites her to a Halloween party, and all goes well–that is, until she bites him, claiming him as her mate.
Will James and Kasey have a World Series kind of romance, or will they strike out at the plate?

A Halloween Hit is the second book in the Big Cats of Ilex Creek Series, a set of interconnected standalones with sugar, spice, shifters, and seasons. Fans of Fleur DeVillainy, The Originals, and Supernatural will enjoy this Halloween-themed novella that has postpartum depression & mental health representation.
What a wholesome read. I was concerned I wouldn't be able to connect to the story as I know nothing about baseball and I have not had children (main themes being baseball, single motherhood and postpartum depression), however this was written in a way that this didn't matter. I became very quickly invested in these characters, and felt every inch of exhaustion, despair, emotional turmoil and lack of control the FMC experienced. I appreciated the amount of fear and hesitation in the MMC and that it wasn't your typical insta love situation. His devotion to her and bub was bursting out of the pages. The spice was tasteful and steamy. The paranormal element was fun and the sense of community and found family by the end of the story was so heartwarming. I really enjoyed this!
This book had a lot of potential for me. I love shifter stories, and the mental health rep with postpartum depression was a big draw for me. I think perhaps it was a disservice to start with this book, as I did feel a little liked I was dropped into a world from the first page, that I was already supposed to know the lore from. As an interconnected standalone, I think a little repeat world building is helpful, so if we don't read in order it doesn't feel so disjointed. I think there will be many readers that enjoy a little fall shifter romance in this book. Thank you to the author and her PR company for this chance to read and review in advance.

What to expect: Single mum ◈ Forced proximity ◈ Mate marking ◈ Small town romance ◈ Hurt x Comfort ◈ Cheetah shifter FMC ◈ Blended family ◈Baseball player/ Firefighter MMC◈
This was such a quick cozy read. The fall vibes of this book were on point. Really enjoyed these characters.
We follow our FMC, single mum and cheetah shifter Kasey Rogers, she has lost herself after becoming a mother. She is on her own and is struggling. She is instantly drawn to the town's newest resident and firefighter James Danning.
Kasey is such a relatable FMC, even though she is struggling with postpartum depression she is always making sure Juli never goes without. She is struggling with feelings that no one would want her now she is a mother. I loved that this was highlighted in this story. Being a mother is hard and we go through all the emotions. I loved the protective mumma vibe. 👏🏽
Our MMC James, is struggling with the rejection from Minor Baseball League. He though the small-town life would be the perfect change for him. What he didn't expect was to find the gorgeous single mother with a wicked fastball.
Now this man is caring, thoughtful, sweet, and protective. He can see how Kasey is struggling with juggling it all. And he wants to help. They go to a Halloween party together and are having a great time until she bites him, claiming him as her mate. And that is where their story really begins.
The romance in this book was lovely; the relationship development was a little faster than books I would normally read but with Kasey biting him and all that comes with the mate bond I didn't mind it at all. Kasey really did give James the time he needed to come to terms with the bond. And the relationship itself was beautiful, this man wanted to give her the world, and the love he had for Juli was so sweet. Their chemistry was through the roof even before she bit him. I also enjoyed the highlight on the difficulty with being intimate after childbirth. Loved the outdoor spicy scene. 🔥
This was just a beautiful story about working through your struggles, being vulnerable, finding yourself again and then finding that person to do life with. And this ticked all the boxes. I was rooting for these two to make it work. Loved the shifter element to the book. Watching James struggling to come to terms with Kasey being a shifter and then seeing her as a cheetah adds that little bit of tension and suspense to the story. I love anything supernatural, so this one was right up my alley.
The baseball facts on the chapter headings was a great addition. And the character art sprinkled throughout the books was stunning.
Thank you to the Author for sharing your story at the end of the book. 😍
I'm so glad I got the chance to read this beautiful story. Thank you so much to the Author for sending me an arc copy of your book. 🤎

Looking for your next cozy, seasonal read to get you nestled into fall? I found it for you: A Halloween Hit by Cynthia Brubaker.
James is a fresh meat: new to town, a firefighter by day, and not to mention ridiculously hot. Kasey is a freshly postpartum mom who is struggling to do it all alone. On top of that, Kasey is battling the void of postpartum blackness that is gnawing away at her, whispering from the darkest corners of her mind: Will anyone want this single mom? Is she “worthy” to anyone? Can she trust herself to find the father figure that her daughter deserves? And to top that all off, she’s a freaking cheetah shifter. Could her mind be any more jumbled?
This bite-sized book gave me all the cozy feels. It’s fast paced, funny, and oh-so-cute.
I absolutely love that this book focused on a WOMAN as the supernatural entity. I’m a sucker for a supernatural X human romance, but 9.9/10 times the supernatural entity is a dude. This book flipped the script- and Kasey was the protective badass!
I have to give all my love to this author for writing a fun romance while incorporating very important elements of what we go through postpartum. The end of this book, complete with Cynthia’s personal story, brought tears to my eyes as I saw my own journey reflected in such a raw and unapologetic way. There is something so powerful in giving birth, but so many of us are lost along the way and expected to simply “recover” and “be okay” as if we didn’t just experience the most ineffable, health-deteriorating, and soul changing moment of our lives. This is THE FIRST BOOK I have ever read with postpartum representation and a healthy relationship between the MCs. Thank you to this author not just for trusting me with her ARC read, but for pouring her soul into this beautiful representation of what our minds look like after having a baby.
Delicious, cozy, heart hugging, and fall-festive: A Halloween Hit is your next seasonal read🍁🎃 👻🐆
If you are looking to dip your toes into cozy romantasy and want to know what this genre is all about, I urge you to pick up the Big Cats of Ilex Creek Series. Set in a small town, this series currently features two short, entertaining, easy-to-read books with light spice. If you want to sample the genre without being overwhelmed by the full blast of romantasy, this is perfect. 3.8
Written in dual POV, this second installment introduces us to two newcomers to the town: Kasey, a cheetah shifter and single mom, and James, a firefighter freshly rejected from a minor baseball league.
Kasey is drowning in the responsibility of single motherhood, and the author brings her struggles to the page so beautifully and sensitively that, even though I don’t have any personal experience, I could deeply feel the nuances of what she is going through.
James wanted to be a baseball player, but that dream has come to an end, and he is bored. Not that firefighting isn’t a noble job, but in this small town it is rarely anything serious. And then he met Kasey... I loved how deeply he cared for her, stepping up to support her even when he was scared of what the future might hold. Plus, his relationship with little Juli is absolutely heartwarming!
While the romance did feel a bit instant and fast-moving (a common side effect of shorter books for me), the chemistry definitely flowed throughout the story. It was also wonderful to see characters from book one pop up and see how their lives have developed.
I have always loved Cynthia Brubaker’s writing (my favorites being Gomada Academy and Of Hearts and Hunters), and I’m so excited to see where she takes this series next!
All I can think about is pleasuring her, for the rest of time. I will be her slave, her soldier. Bow before her forever. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️

Big Cats of Ilex Creek Series- Book 2
QOTD: What’s your fav big cat?
This was a heartfelt read touching on some heavy personal topics. As a woman and a woman it was very relatable and very well written. I loved seeing all the artwork scattered throughout the book.
Blurb: Drowning in the tumultuous waters of new motherhood and trying to find her place in Ilex Creek, single mom Kasey Rogers is instantly drawn to the town’s newest resident and firefighter, James Danning, at a pick-up baseball game. Will James and Kasey have a World Series kind of romance, or will they strike out at the plate?
Words that Linger: 🔥 Set yourself on fire, though I doubt you’d need to go that far to get him to notice you. 🔥 My heart skips a nervous beat when James sinks to his knees, grabbing gentle fistfuls of my hair and massaging soapy water through my long and tangled tresses. 🔥 “I don’t play chase. You either want me or you don’t, Danning.” 🔥 “That was the sexiest thing I’ve ever heard. My name on your pretty lips.”

Quick Summary A authentic emotional journey that captures the raw realities of motherhood. The story beautifully portrays the highs and lows that come with having a baby, making it deeply relatable. James stands out as the ultimate supportive partner, offering the devotion Kasey truly needed. The chemistry between the characters is electric, with perfectly built tension throughout. Set in a charming small town, the interconnected storyline with the first book adds an extra layer of enjoyment.
While Reading Thoughts 📙Wow what an emotional story rollercoaster, as any mother would attest to when you have a baby and the feelings that you go through. Motherhood is hard and this was a beautiful story to show it raw and real. 📙Kasey’s super protective side was so awesome ..fierce mumma cat 📙Everyone needs a James in their corner, the way he wanted to give her the devotion that he felt she was missing. 📙The chemistry was on point and the tension was delicious 📙This small town romance is interconnected with the first book and I loved the overlap
Words that linger 🍷“I haven’t noticed anyone here but you.” 🍷“I’m going to draw you a warm bath and make tea.” 🍷“You deserve to be taken care of, sweets,” 🍷“My sink! The pipe burst! There’s water everywhere!” I can’t help but smile. “I’m a firefighter, sweets. Not a plumber.” 🍷If she wants to do this with me, I will pleasure her until she is satisfied. She comes first. Figuratively, and literally. 🍷“Kitty is an apex predator. And she wants all of you tonight.”

A Halloween Hit by Cynthia Brubaker was such a fun, spooky read that had me captivated and constantly turning the page because I needed to know what was going to happen next. There were definitely a few places where I felt the story was a little rushed, especially when it came to certain moments that I would have loved to see explored a bit more. The shifter marking aspect really intrigued me, though, and I found myself wanting to know more about how everything worked and where it was going. There was also one mystery that was brought up that left me questioning whether I missed the answer somewhere or if it is something that will be continued in the next book. Honestly, that could completely be on me, and I may need to go back and reread that part because I was so caught up in the story. One thing I really appreciated was the way the FMC's experience with postpartum depression was included. It felt relatable and refreshing to see the author acknowledge something that isn't always represented in romance, especially when it comes to the emotional realities of motherhood. Overall, I had a great time with this one. Despite a few moments feeling rushed, I was captivated, invested in the characters, and kept turning those pages because I needed to find out what was coming next. Definitely a fun Halloween read for anyone looking for romance, shifters, mystery, and spooky-season vibes.
Thank you finally! Someone writing about PostPartum mental health and have it done in a fun cozy fantasy setting is brilliant. It was well done and a nice nod in the representation through out the story as we follow Kacie, single mom of a new baby, living without family around and having to navigate all the things alone. Everyone’s experience with postpartum is different, but PPD is real and not just ‘baby blues’ It’s a mental health that is never brought up or talked about and it should be in more stories. The FMC in this story shows us the intrusive thoughts, and not just about the baby, but towards ourselves as moms. Those feelings of not being enough and not feeling adequate, losing your mojo, confidence, personality… all of it is altered and has to be found again. There is so much to PPD and the mental health journey moms go through after birth and years beyond it. It’s ever changing and needs to be seen, so thank you C.B. for starting the chat and I hope more authors follow suit. Everyone’s journey is different and I’d love to hear other stories and in doing so feel less alone.
Also, I’m a big baseball fan, or used to be when I had time before kids, but loved the fun play on baseball in the story. And MMC golden retriever for the win— we loved him!
I loved this cozy novella. Cynthia has the knack for telling an enthralling story in a short amount of time. Her carefulness in the telling of being a new single mother with intrusive thoughts was very well done. It wasn't a trigger for me but obviously check your trigger warnings. This was a very sweet romance and I loved seeing how incredibly thoughtful James was to Kasey before and especially after she bit him, marking him as her mate. Did someone say a shape shifter romance? I enjoyed this Gilmore Girls type of town setting again and the diner was fabulous with an almost Luke like character, who was so fun. My favorite part was seeing Natalie and Drake again in this series. Especially this part, Drake's grin widens. He abruptly punches my arm, pain radiating up my shoulder and neck. "Welcome to the pack, Danning, "My jaw hitting the mound when green feline ovals eclipse his eyes. This made me laugh out loud.
I highly recommend this Halloweenish cozy read! A cheetah single mom marking an ex baseball player/ firefighter mate. So grab your favorite cozy drink, fuzzy blanket and A Halloween Hit novella.
A HALLOWEEN HIT is a beautiful, heartfelt story about single mother Kasey struggling to raise her daughter Juli alone whilst dealing with post-partum depression, and the firefighter James who comes to her rescue. All with a paranormal twist!
I absolutely adored this story. You can tell Cynthia's depiction of PPD is coming from the heart, so even as a childless woman I found myself getting wrapped up in the emotion of it all. It's heartbreaking and comforting all at once, and something anyone who struggled with PPD themselves may want to check the trigger warnings for, but I felt it really allowed the relationships between these characters to shine in the most unexpected ways. For this reason James is one of my favourite MMCs to date, and I simply could not get enough of him in this novella. I would like six more, please!
This is a shifter romance, but I think this book would appeal even to those who don't care for the paranormal side of things. That's how much I enjoyed the character relationships in this book. When combined with Ilex Creek 1 (A CHRISTMAS CADANCE) I find it's building a really nice little world, and I'm already dying to get back into the town.
A fun quick read. This book is cute and filled with Gilmore girls references. It’s fun. The relationship between the MMC and FMC is very insta attraction, insta together. The single mom trope gives great representation to struggles, loneliness, the medical complications most pregnancy when it comes to intimacy. It did a great job portraying some of the challenges of the new born phase. The MMC was super forgiving, supportive, and instantly into the idea of a ready made family. This will either appeal to you as a reader, or turn you off. I personally liked that the drama was limited between them all. And that the guy wanted her kid in his life, just as much as he wanted her in his life.
The relationship moved fast, because the story is a quick read. They had some struggles, they had to get to know each other. And it was a fun delightful read. I’d love to read another book in this cute little town and get to know more of the shifters and the world. There is so much that could be explored.
After reading A Christmas Cadence, I fell in love with Ilex Creek and their cute little town. Yeah, there are shifters living within the community but who can ever NOT love a town with folks like the ever meddling Miss Pattie and simple one liner brood Blythe at the diner. They are fun side characters that I just adore.
Kasey is a single mom who has been living in Ilex Creek for just under a year and single parenting a restless infant is not sustainable. With the love and support from community members Kasey tries to live the best she can to balance everything that demands her attention.
A Halloween meet up turns into a "whoops" moment that then has hunky firefighter James snared under her paws. Kasey is a shifter and James has no idea what just happened.
This book has depths of single parenting and a beautiful love story of a single man who finds himself claimed but realizing that bonds of love built through patience and honesty always win. I am swooning over this cozy read
This is one of the best feel-good slow-burn books I have read in a long time. The dynamic between Kasey & James is perfection! Kasey is a single mom in a new town and trying to find her place. She feels like Ilex Creek may be the perfect place for her and her little one. James is struggling with the loss of his baseball career. He loves being a firefighter and helping save people. Ilex Creek is a slower pace than the big city, and he is beginning to realize he needed the slower pace. Then the Halloween party! And the fun begins! Who would have thought that a baseball player turned firefighter and a single mom cheetah shifter at a Halloween party would be so much fun! Kasey marked James by mistake, because when you know you know, but it was the best mistake she ever made. I have to say this is a must-read for Halloween! Well, honestly, any time of the year! I received an advance review copy at no cost, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
While this book was a cute little read, I found myself unable to be fully invested in it.
One of my favorite things about reading is getting lost in a whole other world, and I sadly wasn't able to do that with this book.
James and Kasey's relationship was cute, I loved how it was filled with fluffy moments. I do wish that we got to see more of his life before he came to Ilex Creek.
I also wish that we got more of that small town aspect. I would have loved more scenes of Pattie, I feel like she had so much potential to be a beloved / funny side character.
I do love that the author mentions postpartum in this book as well. Although I've personally never been through it, I understand how it needs to be talked about more. Postpartum is a real thing, and so many women go through it!
Overall, this was a good book, and a nice cozy read. Thank you to Cynthia for giving me the chance to read this book!
Halloween Hit is the second book in the Big Cats of Ilex Creek series. I didn't realise that until after I finished the book (thanks ADHD impulsitivity!), and while there were times I wondered why we weren't getting more information, there was still enough that I could fill in the gaps and enjoy this story.
Cynthia ensured to capture what postpartum can be like - I particularly like that she represented painful s*x, as this is such a common thing for women that is not spoken about. And yes, this is a fictional story with shifters, but it's still a learning moment for many!
Kasey and James are instantly loveable, and having Kasey be the shifter was refreshing! While I enjoyed seeing their relationship develop I feel like we missed out on a lot of the defining moments, which made it feel rushed.
Overall this is a lovely cosy romance that is of a snackable size.
This was such a cute read and the perfect way to kick off the fall season! It was quick, cozy, and such an enjoyable story to curl up with.
One of the main reasons I was initially drawn to this book was the postpartum representation woven throughout the story. I really appreciated the thought and care the author put into including this part of the character’s journey. It brought in some very real and vulnerable moments that I appreciated as someone who went through PPD.
I also really enjoyed the shifter aspect of the story! I haven't read many shifter romance stories, but I think this was the perfect one to start with.
Overall, I enjoyed this story very much. It was fun, romance-filled, and the perfect fall read. If you’re looking for something easy to pick up as we head into the cozy autumn season, this is definitely one to add to your TBR!
This was a fast read, coxy story with elements of sports and a small town feel.
I felt though, that this was a world I was supposed to already know about, there's not much about the world, a little mentioning about shifters and other creatures and where they live but not luch else. I wish there would have been more world building because with that it would have helped a great deal!
I felt it could have been an additional element to it but that may be due to the fact I'm so used to these kinda books having an additional plot as well as the romance. I enjoyed the story though and it was a wholesome read in the end.
Thank you to the PR company and the author for giving me an eARC of the book!
This was such a quick, sweet read. I loved the postpartum representation in this and how Kasey was a single mother! I thought that the exploitation of this was done really well.
The romance itself is very fast paced and fun and mixed well with the paranormal aspects of Kasey being a cheetah shifter. James was an absolute sweetheart and I enjoyed his dynamic with Kasey and Juli (Kasey’s daughter).
A random additional touch I enjoyed was all the art throughout the ebook. It was cute and I just loved seeing that.
Overall, a very fun read and perfect for autumn and spooky season!
A cheetah shifter accidentally marks a hot Dean Winchester-type baseball player in this delightful novella. It was a quick and easy read that I honestly had a blast with. Cynthia Brubaker’s writing is easy to read and relatable. I appreciated the way she explored post partum depression in her character, highlighting something that so many mothers deal with. If you’re looking for a palate cleanser with some serious undertones, then read A Halloween Hit this spooky season! Or any season really.
I loved that the FMC was the shifter and the MMC was human. That isn't a dynamic you see very often.
The writing was good. I liked the new mom aspect to the story as well.
This was just a case of not my favorite trope. It was very insta-love but the mating bond could have something to do with it. It was hard to tell since the bite happened so early in their relationship. Just a personal preference.
The mix of single parent shifter FMC and baseball player/firefighter MMC set this book on an interesting track.
If I hadn't read book 1 (Christmas Cadence), I'd definitely rate this book 4 ⭐ without reservations. It has an interesting premise of an accidental mate bite by a shifter that pushes a couple attracted to each other into a much deeper potential relationship. Unfortunately, that was basically the premise of book 1....the search for answers about the bond and its consequences and human fear/pushback against the paranormal just felt like a repeat... because it was. So....do I rate this one a 3/3.5 because of the repeat premise?!?! As a standalone without reading book 1, it's honestly better.
I liked these characters better! While I'm never really a fan of insta-love because I want yearning and chemistry, these two were more real and honest with their life, worries, hopes, and dreams than the characters in book 1. The dugout was 🔥 and seeing them work together as parents was adorable and helped form the relationship and depth of chemistry.
The maternal mental health angle was important and solidly done.
I love how drawn James was to Kasey from the moment they met and when she marked him and panicked, even after Kasey explained everything to him, he stayed and was there for her protecting her and her baby.
There were so many moments that I just aww because the moment were just so sweet and vulnerable and I just couldn't get enough of them both.
I love the ending and it really brought tears to more eyes, I wish I didn't have to say goodbye to them so soon.
I wanted to take my time writing this review because of how special this book is to me. Without going into too much detail about my personal postpartum experiences, I felt so seen while reading A Halloween Hit. While this book is a romance on the surface, there’s so much more emotional depth to this particular book.
Before reading this book, I hadn’t yet found a book that dove headfirst into what motherhood looks like when it isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. What I love most about not only this book, but Kasey and James as well, is how realistic everything felt (outside of the whole shifter part lol). These two characters give each other grace when they need it, and show up when it matters.
I absolutely love this book and this author! I can’t wait to see what’s next for the Ilex Creek crew!
Not my usual trope nor genre but I really liked the twist the post partum element added to the story. It was like a pinch of cardamon over an otherwise classic spiced latte, good foundation, just a bit of extra bitter edge. Oh, and talking of spice, well, 🌶️🌶️🌶️!
This is a super cosy, easy read, I was lucky to receive an ARC.
I love that the woman is the shifter and the man is the human, don't see that very often. I wish there was a bit more development in the relationship before marking occurred but the relationship was so cute regardless.
This was pretty cute! I loved all the Supernatural references with the impala and to Sam Winchester. Love that james looks like dean as well!
Enjoyed the story, i didnt feel like honey was the most natural nickname for her but enjoyed everything else about the story. The love james had for her daughter was super cute! Loved the protective fmc vibes!
