Sweet Violence

Rate this book
Some men survive tragedies.
Some men become them.

Henry Rothwell is famous for surviving.

A fire made him a household name. Everything else followed—a bestselling memoir, sold-out lecture halls, a reputation built on survival.

When I earn the assistantship at Wexley, Henry Rothwell is already a fixture. A famous author. An untouchable professor. A story everyone assumes is complete.

They’re wrong.

Up close, his survival isn’t clean. The details don’t line up. The silence feels intentional. Whatever lives beneath the version he presents presses closer the longer I stay.

Henry Rothwell isn’t what the world believes.

And whatever he really is—
I’m close enough now to find out.

I fucking love what this author writes. Every damn time. And once again with this Professor/TA Daddy romance.

TW for human trafficking

“You don’t seem like the kind of person who holds back.”
“I don’t,” he said. “For you, I will.”

“Why do I find that romantic? Normal people would run away.”
“As if I’d let you.”

"Daddy: There is lunch in my office for you. Come eat it.
Me: I’m not hungry
Daddy: Too damn bad, baby. Don’t make me come and get you. I will toss you over my shoulder and walk you across campus like that."

Full disclosure: i'm in a slump so that might've impaired my enjoyment.

After reading All Ghosts Aren't Dead and enjoying that so much I was foaming at the mouth to read another book by April Jade. Unfortunately, this one missed the mark for me. I was bored for most of the book and not even the obsessed MCs saved this.😩 it sorta felt like the same characters from a different book were placed here with different names and a different background..which normally I wouldn't complain about because I'm super into obsessed/possessive Daddy/boy dynamic but it just didn't seem to fit here. I don't understand why there was even a teacher x TA trope considering it didn't come into play with any sort of sneaking around or being discrete at all when they were doing things out in public.😵‍💫 I was already barely hanging on, trying not to give up on the book but then when one my dreaded tropes shows up and I had to call it quits.

I love these codependent relationships that irl would be extremely toxic, I WANT the MCs to literally die without the other, I want to believe their connection is special/one of a kind, if I don't believe that then the whole possessive/obsessed parts become stupid because what do you mean you're like this with everyone you're involved with?! My brain does not compute these types of characteristics with it's just in two separate boxes in my mind. It doesn't belong in my fantasy world of OTT behaviors and so many instances that require suspension of disbelief. TO ME, it belongs in a separate space with careful and thoughtful writting and realistic settings.

The trope is too much for me. It's too sad, it's too real and it's not for me.

3.5 ⭐️. This had a bit of everything - hurt/comfort, drama/intrigue, some good spice, a chaotic best friend, and lots of Daddy energy. This was a quick read and I wanted more when I was finished.

Archibald (Archie) 👓❤️ Henry

Archie applies to a be a grad school TA for Henry, a professor and published trauma expert. We learn early that Henry survived a devastating fire that killed 4 faulty members when he was an undergrad years ago. Archie is also a survivor of trauma, having a younger brother who vanished from their front yard.

These two meet and have an instant connection. The story unfolds as we learn more about each of them and how their lives somewhat intertwine.

I’m not going to give any good details away, but there is a plot outside their relationship.

❤️ No third act breakup. Not even a hint. These two are devoted.
🗣️Communication - love how safe they felt together and how easily their shared their histories w each other. No misunderstanding driving the plot.
➡️Age gap - 34 yrs old professor (Henry) and 24 yrs old grad student (Archie)
🧠Mental health - We see Archie’s panic attacks and his disassociation; often thru the voice of his best friend, Rhys. We know he’s had therapy and we learn what/why he’s triggered.
🕺Daddy (no age play) - this was done so well. Henry fully accepts Archie, helps him thru his panic episodes and doesn’t try to fix him. Just gives him a safe space. The Daddy happens kind of naturally for both.
❤️ Opposites attract/Like finds like -So they’re sort of opposites but also not. Henry has the broody scary professor vibe and Archie has the glasses wearing smart guy barely keeping it together thing. But also, they both see each other SO clearly and are similarly guarded w other people.
🌶️Spice - open door; full consent; at times in public spaces w no real regard for being caught (library). Loved all the hugging, small touches, hand holding, and sitting on his lap.
🫣 No OM - And we don’t know anything about their prior experience, except that Henry has a dead ex. (See below). Both immediately think of the other as “mine”.
🏫Setting - college campus
😊Nicknames: Rabbit, baby, sweetheart, Professor
👬🏽Both out/gay. I loved how Henry couldn’t care less whether anyone found out they were together. There was no hand wringing about their TA/Professor status
👥Dual POV: HEA. 7 month later epilogue, living together; final scene is with Henry, Rhys, Archie and his mom at his childhood home.

What I loved:
- Even within the Daddy dynamic there was no power imbalance/. Archie is a “rabbit w teeth”; he’s smart and capable.
- Loved how possessive and caring Henry was w him. He’s OTT obsessed and isn’t shy about it.
- The writing and the way the author describes their feelings and connection is very specific and different. It really helped create the atmosphere.

Why not 5 stars:
- Dead Ex - We learn that Henry has a dead ex which drives a lot of his motivation in the story. It happened years ago, but with an obsessed relationship, I don’t like there to be any other people at all in the mix. Just my preference.
- It was too short. The pacing at the end was weird. There’s a whole lot that we learn very quickly in the last 10%. I wanted a bit more time spent at the end, allowing us to enjoy the unraveling and seeing them settled and together.

As usual for April Jade’s books, I devoured this is one day. Seriously, I downloaded it Saturday at 11pm and finished at 8pm Sunday.

What can I say about Archie and Henry? Let’s give them some adjectives: obsessive, codependent, hilarious, swoon-worthy, hot, feral daddy/boy energy, the list goes on. But that’s the best part of Jade’s books, imo. Ferally protective Daddy’s and their sweet but equally feral boys.

Archibald Quinn is a walking poster for unresolved trauma and Professor (Daddy) Henry Rothwell is the lethally smart and stoic Daddy that stitches Archie’s pieces back together. They both have gone through unimanginable horrors, but Henry turned into a hard-ass Psychology and Criminology professor while Archie turned into an equally as smart, yet slightly more messy, graduate TA. That doesn’t mean Archie isn’t brave or strong, though. No, he’s 100% that rabbit that also has really powerful legs and can kick your ass.

Their chemistry was off the charts from the moment they met. You could cut that sexual tension with a damn steak knife. They were inevitable, honestly, and when they first kissed it made my brain go brrrrrr (in the best way).

Let’s also give a round of applause for Archie’s best friend, Rhys, who is so hilarious and sarcastic that I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. The perfect couterpart for Archie, honestly. Jade always has the best side characters.

The mystery in this book is handled well and kept me guessing the entire time. It was resolved with a nice bow on top, which I always appreciate. The angst isn’t too high, which is 100% my jam because I love drama and high emotions but not angst within the MC’s relationship. Archie and Henry are committed from the beginning and their relationship is on the fast track, but I absolutely adore that.

Another great novel that I’ll end up reading 100 more times. Now, I’m off to read Be Mine, Vicious Valentine again just because I can.

I received an ARC of this novel for my honest opinion.

4.5 stars. Henry Rothwell is a thirty-four-year-old professor at Ashford Academy. He’s an accomplished man who survived a terrible fire, he’s quite famous for it. He needed a TA; he could choose from 20 students, but he only wanted Archibald Quinn.

Archibald Quinn is a twenty-four-year-old student, who comes from the lower classes and has a tragic background. Caught between grief and guilt, he tried to keep standing, it’s hard.
He knows Professor Rothwell’s work, and admires him and finds him very attractive. They have something in common; tragedy and surviving.

My Little Rabbit

The more Henry sees Archie the more obsessed and protective he becomes over him, because dang, Archie needs it. The Academy is all about status, something Archie doesn’t have.
Henry uses endearments to his little rabbit and my heart stuttered, it was so intense, gawd. I wanted to hug both of them. Archie needed him and Henry gave his all.

Daddy

Their encounters are super sensual and it gets hotter and hotter.
Little by little we get to understand what’s going on in Archie’s tragic life, and of course Henry’s.
Keep in mind it’s part of the ‘In the Spotlight’ series!! Mind the trigger warnings
A wonderful story, heavy on the emotional aspects, mild on the core aspect of the series, and heavy again on the parts of Archie’s background. There are some serious on-page panic attacks.
The writing was solid and captivating, the characters lovable. The plot was well worked out, I loved the buildup and outcome.
The very, very last page made me smile hard.

This was nice read. I love how these two saw each other. And how protective they were of each other. It was nice watching their relationship grow and I loved the healing. I didn’t know who it was until the end I really enjoyed that. The writing was great the spice was nice and I would love to read more from this author.

Henry & Archie are an interesting pair. For some reason, I didn’t see emotional codependence/dependence as much as I expected. I thought it was going to be a little more intense where Henry was a little more of a caretaker and Archie needed him more BUT their portrayal was like a normal relationship (if you add violent murderous tendencies). I think it’s interesting the way AJ wrote out Henry to not be so stoic and harsh like a murderer would be. He was actually a bit of a softy in my opinion. There was a twist that was a little unexpected, but looking back, even though there were not hits it can be pretty clear if you’re a sleuth and paying attention (I was not, I was focused on the rabbit). Overall, this was a solid read. Not as hurt/comfort as the rest of AJs books but still there nonetheless.

🐰Tell me the worst thing you've ever done, and watch me love you anyways📚

"Henry Rothwell was beautiful in a way that made rational feel optional. Not safe. Not soft. Built like a bad decision with tenure."

"You'll have to excuse my bluntness, Professor, but life is f****** ugly. We don't have to paint over the complicated parts with flowers and sunshine to try to make it something the world can stomach. It can just be ugly."

"The trauma wasn't what made Archie unique. Everyone had trauma. It was the way he refused to soften himself into a digestible version of it."

"You can't love someone's trauma away. You can only love them with it--on good days, bad days, and the long nothing days in between."

"Look at me."
"I.....already am."
"Are you bratting me right now?"
"I'm following directions, Professor."
"Hell."

"That sounds a lot like you deciding I'm yours to manage." His gaze dropped to my mouth.
"Not to manage," he whispered. "To take care of."
My hands shook at my sides, fingers flexing like they didn't know what to do with themselves.
"Go ahead, sweetheart. You can touch me." Everything in me stalled. My brain. My lungs. My ability to pretend this was normal.
"I--I think if I do that, I'm not going to stop."
"That's not a deterrent."

"I wanted him. All of him. Every inch. Every habit. Every quiet, unaware thing he offered up without defense."

"What, are you going to slay all my dragons now, Daddy?"
"Baby, for you, I'd take them apart piece by piece."
Violence shouldn't have sounded like that. It shouldn't have felt like that. Romantic. Sweet. And yet---I believed him. How could I not?

"Tell me the worst thing you've ever done, and watch me love you anyways."

"Henry loved me with his entire body. There was nothing restrained about it--nothing careful or partial. If the world reached for me wrong, he would've torn it apart with his bare hands before he let me keep it."

"He knows when I'm about to spiral before I do. He just...fixes it. Not fixes. Finds. He finds me."

This was such a phenomenal and amazing book. This author always writes amazing and emotional books. I really have loved everything by this author, and I was so excited when this book finally hit my kindle. This was a great story filled with trauma and how you deal and manage with said trauma. This also had some great troupes like: Forbidden Romance, Professor/Teaching Assistant, Age Gap, Trauma Bonding, Emotional Codependance, and Morally Grey/Unhinged MC. The spice was fantastic as well 🔥🔥🔥. This story kept me guessing and there was a mystery feel to this plot line that kept you wondering what's going to happen next. My heart broke for both of these MMCs so much 😭. This did get quite emotional and had me in my feels. There were a few twists and turns that had my jaw dropping as well.

This story follows Archie and Henry. Henry is a famous psychology and criminology professor. He is known for his traumatic past, where he survived a fire at a college where some others didn't survive. Since then, he has written books and done many interviews. The college is forcing him to get TA (Teaching Assistant). Archie has read everything by Henry and is enamored with him. He ends up interviewing and getting the TA position. Archie is riddled with anxiety and constantly lives in his head. He has many quirks. Henry picked up on this right away and became obsessed with him. These two just see and understand each other on another level. They both start to confide about their traumatic pasts and things heat up fast 🥵🥵. Henry starts to help Archie look for his lost brother, who was taken while also dealing with threats to himself. Henry reveals his secrets to Archie. What will these two uncover? Is the fire related to who took Archie's brother? Will Henry's dark secrets get them into trouble? Can these two get some of the answers they need to breathe easier?

I really loved how this couple came together. This was an insta love but it was done so well. Both of these men harbored so much trauma and dealt with it differently. I love how this author wrote Archie. His quirks and coping mechanisms were spot on and relatable. Henry thrived and needed control. Until he met his little rabbit 😏. The chemistry was 🥵🥵. The spicy scenes were delicious 🔥🔥🔥. I loved how Herny accepted all of Archie and didn't want him to change. He allowed him to just exist and not have to worry about the unknown. I love how Archie was feral for his Daddy. He would fight to protect him. Yes Archie was meek and shy but he also had teeth. This couple was so adorable and was everything. I definitely loved all the vulnerable moments and when Henry knew how to calm down and soothe his boy. I also loved the relationship between Rhys and Archie. He was so supportive and looked out for him. Plus the ending of this was fantastic with revenge served 😈.

April Jade really did it again because I inhaled this book in a single sitting 😭📚 From the very first interaction between Archie and Henry, I was completely obsessed. Their connection was intense, chaotic, emotional, and somehow unbelievably tender all at once.

Archibald Quinn is such a beautifully complicated character 🖤 He’s anxious, sharp-minded, messy in the most endearing way, and carrying years of unresolved pain that constantly battles with his need to feel safe. Then there’s Professor Henry Rothwell 🥵📖 — cold, brilliant, emotionally guarded, and absolutely gone the moment Archie walks into his life. The Daddy/boy dynamic between them was EVERYTHING. Protective, possessive, emotionally dependent, a little unhinged, and somehow still incredibly sweet.

What I loved most was how deeply these two understood one another. Henry immediately recognizes all the little habits and coping mechanisms Archie hides behind, while Archie sees beyond Henry’s controlled exterior and into the trauma he keeps buried. Their bond develops fast, but it felt so natural because they connected on such a raw emotional level ❤️‍🔥

The professor/TA setup added so much tension too 👀 The chemistry between them was genuinely insane. Every conversation felt charged, every touch felt meaningful, and when things finally escalated? Absolutely feral energy in the best possible way 🔥🐇 Henry might be the calm and intimidating criminology professor to everyone else, but around his little rabbit he completely loses control. And Archie? Quiet and awkward on the surface, yet fiercely loyal and ready to throw hands for his Daddy at any moment.

I also really appreciated how the story balanced romance with suspense. The mystery surrounding Archie’s missing brother, the threats circling Henry, and the secrets tied to Henry’s past kept me completely invested the entire time 🕵️‍♂️ There were multiple moments where I genuinely didn’t know where the story was heading next. The twists landed perfectly and the emotional reveals hit HARD.

The trauma representation felt painfully real too. Both Archie and Henry survived horrific experiences and coped in entirely different ways, which made their relationship feel even more meaningful. Instead of trying to “fix” Archie, Henry simply accepted every broken and chaotic part of him 🥹 That unconditional understanding honestly made some of the softer moments hit even harder than the romance.

And can we talk about Rhys for a second? 😂 He absolutely stole scenes with his sarcasm and chaotic best friend energy. His friendship with Archie added so much warmth and humor to an otherwise emotionally heavy story.

This book delivered emotional vulnerability, obsession, forbidden romance, mystery, possessive devotion, healing through love, and characters that felt beautifully damaged yet perfect together 🖤 The ending was beyond satisfying too — especially with the revenge elements woven in at the end 👏

Without a doubt one of those stories I’ll keep rereading over and over again.

ARC Review

3.5 ⭐

Let the record show that April is as close to an auto-read author for me as it gets. There is not a single book she has written that I didn't enjoy and even though this book had it's issues, that definitely still stands. I want to address where the book falters first so I can spend the rest of this review gushing over my Archie and Henry.

The pacing is honestly probably the story's biggest weakness. The plot felt rushed especially in the latter half; this is a short book coming in at just about 260 pages but there was *a lot* going on, much of which seemed like it was left underdeveloped. It's unfortunate because premise itself was really interesting; for those who like crime/mystery plots this will definitely be up your ally. I'm always in awe at April's ability to tie multiple plotlines together, I just wish we had more time to digest it all. Like when everything finally hit the fan, and the plot was at it's climax, tell me why we were only 20 pages out from the end?! There are also some things that just kind of go unanswered or are given the bare minimum explanation which was a bit disappointing because of all the build up we got. Some more minor things include the Professor/TA dynamic. I don't think it was necessary, I mean they did not care at all. Straight feeling each other up in public, some scenes I was like "Are we still in public?!" Everyone was so nonchalant about it too, it kind of threw me off. Rhys is really our only true supporting cast aside from Archie's mom who I spent half the book trying to figure out if she was gonna be a *problem* or not. But to be fair I didn't really like either of them.

That's okay though because I LOVED Archie and Henry. Stupidly competent is used to describe Henry a lot throughout the book and that's actually pretty accurate. Like..hello? Can he come fix all my problems as well. He is just such a green flag (you know...minus the murder and stuff). April always nails the caretaking in her books and this one was no different. Archie is also a very sweet and fun character, Henry early on says something along the lines of "my rabbit has teeth" and he does indeed! Despite struggling with a lot, Archie never felt weak or like a push over. He had the perfect amount of sass too, in my opinion.

There is honestly a lot to like about this book; it's not perfect but I still really enjoyed it. I think those who interested in a good a little crime subplot alongside the caretaking daddy and his a sassy rabbit are also gonna like this.

Kind of a side note; I was half expecting this to be connected to one the Forgotten boys series. Based on what were told towards the end it's not super likely but... you never know! It could be a easy tie in.

Archie earns an assistantship at Wexley expecting to work under celebrated survivor‑turned‑author Henry Rothwell — a man famous for living through a fire and building a career on that story. But up close, the polished narrative doesn’t hold. The details feel wrong, the silences feel deliberate, and the longer Archie stays, the more he senses something darker beneath Henry’s public persona. What the world believes about Henry isn’t the truth, and Archie finds himself dangerously close to uncovering who — or what — Henry really is.

The connection between Archie and Henry is undeniable from the start of this dark romance — two men equally fascinated by each other, drawn together by something sharp, curious, and impossible to ignore. They’re similar in so many ways, but Henry has had years to perfect the mask he shows the world, while Archie is still learning how to read the shadows behind it. I loved how they could openly discuss scenarios, motivations, and the darker corners of human behaviour; it made Archie the perfect assistant for Henry, and it deepened their bond in a way that felt both intellectual and intimate. The story carries real danger and drama as Archie gets too close to something he shouldn’t, and Henry steps in with a fierce protectiveness that says more than words ever could. Archie’s friendship with Rhys was another highlight — a vital source of grounding and support before Henry became part of his world. A dark, compelling read with tension, obsession, and a connection that feels as inevitable as it is intense. This was an MM story with mature content with a BDSM-like Daddy/boy dynamic.

I haven't had the chance to read the rest of this series yet unfortunately BUT April Jade's addition was absolutely lovely 🥰. I am a sucker for some daddy kink & hurt/ comfort and throw them together and I am hooked 😏. Henry and Archie's book was so absolutely sweet and the way they collided with each other from the get go eased my soul, even with all the twists, turns and dark secrets hiding within the walls of campus 👀🫣.

They have both gone through horrific trauma and yet like calls to like, and they both gravitate towards each other like they are their own suns 💜. I love April Jade's writing, it makes the reading fly so fast but in a way I truly enjoy! April has an amazing way of mixing the light with the dark in a way that even classified as a dark romance this was so sweet... In that possessive, obsessive way 😈🔥.

If you haven't read anything by April I highly suggest delving into this world alongside Archie & Henry. They are both complex, beautifully flawed individuals who find a safe haven within each other. They don't heal one another, but they give each other the strength to go on and to want to heal in their own ways 🫶. PLUS, the mysteries regarding Henry, the campus and its surrounding town will keep you invested until the last second 😘.

Henry & Archie

NGL April Jade is one of my favorite authors and I'd gladly read the phone book if she wrote it. So when I was invited to read an arc of
Sweet Violence I was thrilled.
This book is a professor/grad student, age gap (10 years), Daddy/Boy lite (they use the terms and there's a special care by Daddy but no age play or BDSM), hurt/comfort which are some of the core ingredients of what Ms. Jade writes and I find so enjoyable.
Henry, 34, professor, writer & lone survivor of a devastating fire years ago is forced by the college to get a TA. Archie, 24, grad student with his own tragic backstory, gets the TA job. It's an instant attraction for both MMCs and they don't let anything stand in the way of their need to be together. Which, tbh, is nice. Sometimes a low angst, high heat romance is what you need and this hit the spot. This book is a stand alone but part of the multi-author series In The Spotlight  about morally grey MMCs in the public eye.
An easy 5-stars from me.

First of all, isn't this supposed to be a collab about a serial killer in the spotlight? Because this one is definitely not that. Most of the dark stuff if off page and at very end. This one started off good, but then the author time jumped right after they start their professional relationship. Suddenly they are both really into each other? No chemistry, no build up, or reasoning. Then we don't get much of the relationship or romance growth.

Some of the writing and imagery was really strange too:

[Smooth eyelids fluttered once before closing fully, lips parting to chase the taste of my skin. He sucked my thumb into his mouth, humming.
“Who said I want to walk away?”
Goddamnit.
The soft give of his sweater turned under my hand, stretching just enough before dragging him from his seat. Wood scraped hard across the floor, one leg catching before the whole thing tipped, the back slamming down with a crack that echoed up the shelves.]

Clearly, not meant for me. At least all the other books I've read in the collab at least follow the series blurb.

Obsessive, wild and a feral in the best ways

Archie and Henry are the exact type of horrifyingly feral and obsessive couple that would terrify you in real life but are absolutely delicious in fiction. Would I ever want to be in a relationship like this in real life - gawd no. Am I obsessed with how toxically possessive and obsessive these to are? 100%. April Jade is so good at taking hurt characters and, no matter how broken or bruised they are, making the most wonderful, twisted relationships that might not help them heal healthily but help them truly live again. I loved seeing Henry help build Archie up again. Archie wasn't weak by any standard (that boy is made of pure steel) but Henry helped him move beyond mere existence and survival to thriving in his own very special way. It was unhinged and lovely at the same time and I enjoyed every second of it.

Henry has officially become the ultimate book boyfriend, and I can’t believe their story was over so quickly.

This entire novel felt like poetry.. every moment was beautifully written, and I could feel their love as if it were my own. I will never pass up the chance to read more from this author.

Codependency- Daddy - age gap - professor/ student - hurt comfort

I wasn't ready

I was not ready for Henry and Archie to be over. Trauma was death with so beautifully. I think my favorite line between these two was actually Archie saying "People always talked about love like it fixed things...Absolute bull$h!t. My brain was still a hostile work environment."
Double check your mental health and read these trigger warnings (they are done very well) but how April Jade handled writing them was beautiful. I loved this book and can't wait to see what's next in April's plans for every book she releases.

When Archie gets to be closer to a professor who seems to be perfect on all aspects, like spots like immediately and the draw towards professor Henry becomes undeniable.
Both having gone through trauma in their lives, the bond between them grows quickly and obsessively with Henry becoming Archie’s source of comfort.

An age gap, professor/ teaching assistant story with some mystery, some angst, emotional codependency, hurt/comfort, Daddy/boy themes, a fantastic best friend, spice and a HEA.
An absolutely wonderful read once again from this author.

I wasn't surprised to find myself completely gripped within the first few pages and finished Sweet Violence in one sitting, I've yet to read a book by this author that I didn't love.
I'm obsessed with Henry and Archie. Their immediate chemistry was undeniable and addictive.
If you are a reader who enjoys a dark romance with hurt\comfort, a morally grey MC and professor\teaching assistant then this one is for you.

As a young man, Henry survived the trauma of a fire that claimed 4 lives. Years later, Archie who has worshipped him from afar, meets the now professor for an interview as his T.A. and it's flame on. From minute one, both are intense, focused, hyperaware of each other. And when they come together in need? An explosion of want and taking. Both have under the surface damage, the feeling of loss that only the other can fill. Shocking but satisfying and full of steamy possession.

Nobody writes about possesive/obsessed daddies like April!
I loved Henry and Archie so much and definitely shed some tears for all the heartache and loss they both went through before they found eachother.
I absolutely loved them and I blew through this because it was so good!
There's pretty dark topics in this so check your triggers for sure!
