Found myself another nice read! Chu Baiyan is absolutely right, Yan Anqing is the most precious baby in the world. I feel like 星星草 / Star Grass is the very meaning and example of the phrase: to be loved, is to be known. Yan Anqing has a high functioning autism and Chu Baiyan has a bit of a social anxiety. And in this world that often misunderstands both of them, they found each other, and chose each other. "Maybe Yan Anqing himself didn’t know that the heart he offered was priceless." Chu Baiyan loves Yan Anqing so much that he's memorized and has learned everything about his baby. And he's always, always taking care of Anqing even with the smallest bits. Yan Anqing loves pottery, he loves starfish, he loves the sea, he loves sweets, but he dislikes leafy vegetables, he dislikes crowded places, he dislikes noisy places, and many other more that Chu Baiyan has learned to know and stored in his heart. None of these things are treated as trivial. To Chu Baiyan, they are pieces of Yan Anqing worth treasuring. Chu Baiyan, the merman, the son of the sea, wakes up in the morning and buys Yan Anqing the breakfasts he loves, he's always there to tie the ribbon on the back of Anqing's apron, he's always there when Anqing is getting anxious, he's always there when he's doing his pottery, and he's always there to explore the things Yan Anqing loves. He steps into Yan Anqing's world without hesitation, and meets him where he is. I guess it's true? Being close to the water gets you the moon first. "When he was young, he firmly believed that one day the son of the sea would come ashore to find him. From the first time he saw Chu Baiyan, he had already known that he was the one he had been waiting for." And Yan Anqing, in his own way, loves just as deeply. His love is simple, unwavering, and absolute. Once someone becomes "his own," they are never let go. There is no ambiguity in his feelings, no half-measures, only certainty. Yan Anqing loves with a kind of permanence that the world doesn't always accommodate, and Chu Baiyan's choice to step into that space carries a quiet sense of responsibility. They're just so full of love, I am so happy for them. This is not really a perfect novel to which I have my dislikes, and there's a lot of mundanity in it, but that's also the beauty of this novel. There's also quietly heavy angst (it's not too dramatic) but everything was resolved nicely. Nothing felt rushed, they really fell in love with each other. Their love feels so complete. Yan Anqing will never be misunderstood. And Chu Baiyan will never be alone. They found each other! They're just so cute together. I can only hope for their endless happiness and wellbeing!
This story is short but full of heart. The representation of autism (ASD) is so mindful and sensitive without making light of the condition. As someone who isn't knowledgeable enough about this topic, I can still see how well-researched the author is and how respectful they are in their character representation.
Yan Anqing is different from others, not understanding empathy, social etiquette, interpersonal relationships, and many of the things that come naturally and easily to a lot of people. There might be a lot of people who wouldn't be able to handle him, but that doesn't mean there's no one willing to. He's such a pure treasure—so innocent and adorable, so straightforward when it comes to his likes and dislikes, and his love is just so simple yet so profound.
Having Chu Baiyan as his partner is honestly just perfect for him. He's such an understanding and considerate person, very gentle and patient. He never forced Anqing to do anything he's uncomfortable with and always tried to remember every anxiety he has so that he could prevent it from being triggered. For someone as socially withdrawn as him, Baiyan knows the suffocating feeling of being forced to be surrounded by strangers, so he never let Anqing experience it, even putting himself up as a shield just so that his beloved could stay within his comfort zone.
He never infantilized Anqing or treated him as if he had less intellectual capacity just because he's different. There's no "little idiot" or "little silly" endearment that some authors use. The intention might not be to demean the character, but it can still come across as pretty insensitive. Chu Baiyan only has admiration and respect for his Yan Anqing. He never did anything that made Anqing uncomfortable or unhappy.
This is such a wholesome read—so heartwarming and healing. It makes me feel so peaceful. As an introvert, I feel so validated having the same thought process as the characters, and it makes this story much more relatable than I expected.
Heartwarming novel! Both male leads' love are genuine and pure making me squeel due to their interactions!!! It also contains a bit of nsfw. In conclusion, a nice novel to pass the time without those extra dramas or a sudden plot twist. Full of fluff.
