The Charleston harbor shimmers with beauty and power. It's a city of divided the privileged and the laborers.
Helen Woodard has grown up surrounded by luxury, and her future seems secure in a pending engagement to the charming and powerful Charles Wellman. But beneath her polished composure stirs a longing for something more.
For John Doherty, a young mechanic new to the city, Charleston offers a chance to prove himself. To build something honest and lasting with his own two hands. But when a draft notice arrives, his dreams are upended.
And for Lucas Woodard, Helen's brother, life has always been easy. His future of privilege also seems certain, but tensions arise when he fails to meet his father's expectations.
As 1917 dawns and America joins the war, Charleston becomes a city of blurred where loyalty wavers, love defies logic, and whispers of betrayal stir in drawing rooms and shipyards alike.
In Emily Ann's second novel, Where I Stand, war tests the limits of class and the depths of the human heart, revealing how courage, sacrifice, and unexpected love can rise from the ashes of a divided world.
Emily Ann is a historical fiction writer with a passion for bringing the past to life through compelling characters and immersive storytelling. Growing up in Charleston, South Carolina, she developed a deep appreciation for history and culture, which inspires her writing. Emily holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and homeschools her own children. She is also an active member of her church community and enjoys gardening, crocheting, and photography.
After reading Where I Stand, I can confidently say that every book by Emily Ann will be an automatic purchase for me. I am so obsessed with her writing style. If I Go, the first book in the Valiant series, was a favorite from last year, but I think I may love Where I Stand even more. The characters absolutely stole my heart. Lucas, Helen, and especially John. 🥹 I felt so deeply connected to them. Each of them experienced such meaningful development throughout the story, and I loved watching their growth individually and in their relationships with one another. I absolutely loved the enemies to lovers between Helen and John. The banter and slow burn was written perfectly! The emotional depth Emily Ann brings to her characters made them feel incredibly real. The story itself was rich, moving, and completely gripping. It was the kind of book that’s nearly impossible to put down because you’re so invested in what happens next. It’s also the kind that will stick with you for a long time. 🥹 Emily Ann is truly a phenomenal author, and Where I Stand is a phenomenal book. I cannot wait to read whatever she writes next.
After reading If I Go by Emily Ann and loving it, I was really excited to read her latest release! It did not disappoint! I finished this one in 24 hours and loved it!
The characters in this story captured my interest right from the start. I truly loved John, Helen, and Lucas! They came alive for me. Each of them had depth. Each had their own struggles to work through, and I loved watching their growth. I instantly loved John’s character! I loved his steady, quiet ways. Helen was exactly likable in the beginning but I truly loved her character by the end! I loved watching her character grow throughout the story. And I can’t forget Lucas! He was a favorite. I truly loved his character. Just like Helen, he had a lot of growing to do, and I loved watching his growth throughout the story.
I absolutely loved John and Helen’s enemies-to-friends-lovers love story! They were perfect for each other, even if they couldn’t stand each other in the beginning.😌 I don’t always love enemies to lovers but I truly loved this one! I loved their banter and slow-burn romance.🫶🏼 I also loved Lucas and Susan together! They were so sweet.❤️
The history in this book captured my interest. I also loved that it’s set in the south as it felt like home to me! I loved Emily Ann’s writing. I teared up more than once in this book. It truly gave me all the feels.
Content wise, there is some mild language but it is infrequently scattered through the book.
In conclusion, I loved Where I Stand! I didn’t want to put it down. If you love books set in the south during WW1, enemies to lovers/ opposites attract romance, three points of view, love across class lines, and conspiracies, I think you’ll love this one!
*Thank you to the author for sending me a complimentary copy! All opinions are my own.
If you are looking for a story to experience the World War I era then Where I Stand is a novel you should really consider reading. This is the first time I have ever read anything by this author but this story captivated me right from the start. She managed to create and beloved cast of characters who were very likeable and I must say i had a hard time putting this book down.
In 1917 we are introduced to Helen who seems to have it all a comfortable life and a well off fiance. However deep down she longs to do something spontaneous with her mundane life. Her brother Lucas while he has always had a good life his inability to meet his father's expectations is starting to wear him down. Lastly a young mechanic named John Doherty finds his life in a great upheaval when he gets a draft notice.
In a period of uncertainty will these individuals find the opportunity to follow their dreams. Overall this novel is surely to leave you in wonder.
I had the privilege of ARC reading, Where I Stand by Emily Ann, and wow it did not disappoint. Set in 1917, when America joins World War I, this book focuses on two couples, Lucas and Susan, Helen and John. The war was horrible, raw and violent. And yet, they manage to find joy, purpose, and even love where they least expect it. The slow-burn romance between Helen and John was so beautiful. Helen is my favorite 🥹🫶🏻 She learns the difference between being wanted and being loved, what society wants, and what her heart calls for. She’s sassy, classy, materialistic and stubborn, and I love her to death. And they all learn that love is not security in wealth, but falling without meaning to, and finding something better. 💗💗 Thank you, Emily Ann. 🫶🏻 I am so in love with your writing! The passion, conflict and emotion you weave into each page. I’m so moved and need more of your books! ✨
3.7 stars (4/10 hearts). As a huge fan of WWI and WWII books, I was instantly interested in this book, since WWI is less popular a subject than WWI. I really enjoyed the portrayal of the army and the navy during the war, as well as the thread of intrigue (never heard of any of those ships that blew up!). I missed the christian message (there were only a couple of references to God) but I enjoyed the portrayal of the different classes. John and Helen's enemies-to-lovers romance was cute and I liked the theme of choosing love rather than luxury (Helen's grandma was awesome 💙). Also, I really identified with John's self-worth issues. I hope to read more by this author.
Content: a few instances of mild language (d*mn, h*ll); a mention of the "marriage bed."
*I received a complimentary copy of this book for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.*
Where I Stand by Emily Ann is an absolute gem! From the very first page, I was captivated by the heartfelt storytelling and the rich, relatable characters. Emily Ann writes like smooth silk, weaving her words in such a way that they continuously lure in the reader. As a World War I historical fiction, the novel beautifully balances clear heroes and villains and delivers plot twists that made me scream and nearly throw my Kindle in shock! Additionally, it reveals that some things in life aren’t exactly what they seem, reminding us not to judge a book by its cover and encouraging us to follow our hearts rather than external pressures. The book also features touching family relationships that brought me to tears in certain parts, adding even more emotional depth. The prose is beautiful, the pacing is perfect, and the emotional depth is truly unforgettable. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone looking for a compelling and engaging read!
I enjoyed book one in this series, but I absolutely DEVOURED this next instalment. I knew I was in for a good book, but I was not prepared for how the characters would grab me and refuse to let go as their individual stories developed. Helen's feisty attitude made me laugh, but it was her soft side that yearned for real love that endeared her to me. Lucas making the choice to mature and improve himself really stood out to me. Susan's loyalty and quiet strength were unforgettable. And John's resilience, courage and dedication made him a character I rooted for. This book made me laugh, it made me cry, it shocked me and it encouraged me. It is an excellent continuation of the themes of valor, devotion and love that Emily has based her series on. Highly recommend!
This book was a thoroughly enjoyable 5-star read for me! I absolutely love historical fiction and this book reminded me why I love it so much! Emily Ann's writing is so pleasant and interesting, and she did a wonderful job of weaving together some of the fascinating and true history of the WWI era with her own gripping story of how war and love are both powerful enough to break down the walls built by cultural prejudices and divisive class distinctions between the "haves" and the "have-nots" of society. I loved the 3 main characters - John, Helen, and Helen's brother, Lucas - and the way that Emily wrote the book alternating between all 3 of their perspectives. It's not often you see a book written so well with 3 POVs, but Emily did it beautifully. All 3 characters, but most especially Helen and Lucas, have fabulous character arcs throughout the story, and seeing the events of the war play out from each of their unique perspectives kept me captivated on every page. I loved the over-arching theme that both war and love are blind to class distinctions; both war and the heart don't know (or care) who's wealthy or part of high society and who's not. And as all 3 main characters are forced to experience, in their own ways, the hardships and painful losses that war brings, they all slowly come to realize that, ultimately, those distinctions are irrelevant when it comes to life or death and love. I also loved how this story illustrated that a person can change and grow for the better in even the most challenging of circumstances and can come through suffering better, stronger, wiser, and more full of joy than ever before.
As a history lover, I relished every bit of the history and the various battles and events of WWI that were incorporated into this story. The author did an admirable job of writing the historical parts of this book with authenticity, accuracy, and respect. And of course, I was so fond of the sweet romance in this book! The main love story between John and Helen develops slowly and gently, as both characters are attempting to overcome hurts, fears, prejudices, and expectations in their families and in themselves. But their slow-growing attraction and love is completely heart-melting, in the best way possible! And in addition to John and Helen's burgeoning relationship, we also get to witness pieces of the lovely romance between Lucas and his fiancé, which is also incredibly precious. It's no exaggeration to say that I did not want to put this book down! This historical fiction romance had me hooked from page one and brought both tears and smiles to my face. I eagerly look forward to reading more of Emily Ann's books as soon as possible!
(I was given a free copy of this book from the author, but all opinions and reviews are mine, are completely voluntary, and are 100% honest.)
This one captured my heart from the jump! I have such a deep appreciation for quality writing, and Emily Ann is certainly an eloquent writer! Where I Stand has been on my TBR since I finished If I Go last year, so I was thrilled to finally get to read this masterpiece! ❤️
Anytime I get to learn a piece of history in a story is a bonus, and I'm so glad this novel touches on World War I. The "Great War" is a period often overlooked, and I loved seeing the U.S. Southern Naval perspective of it! The conspiracy plot twist was also a neat addition!
Like If I Go, Where I Stand was also a dual POV (or rather a triple POV), which is my favorite type of read! I fell in love with all three main characters--Helen, John, and Lucas--and found a piece of myself in each one. Though I will say, I think I loved Helen's character the best. It's no small feat to develop a character who starts (dare I say a spoiled brat) and evolves into a compassionate, perceptive, and unpretentious woman! For John, I loved his diligence, bravery, and devoutness, and definitely felt connected to his struggles with self-worth. Lucas was also a great character, and I found myself in tears over one particular scene.
And truly, what's better than an enemies-to-lovers, class difference romance? All of my favorite tropes wrapped in one! 😍
The Valiant Devotion series is truly wonderful, so well-written, and you grow alongside your faith with the characters. I can't wait to read Emily Ann's next work and feel confident that anything she writes will be an automatic 5-star for me! This book is romantic and emotionally resonates!
✨ World War I ✨ Reluctant Allies ✨ Love Across Class Lines ✨ Enemies to Lovers ✨ Opposites Attract ✨ Conspiracy You'll love this one! ❤️
✨ Where I Stand is the second installment in the "Valiant Devotion" series, though it can certainly be read as a standalone. Suitable for young adult readers and older. ✨
This was my first read by this author and I cannot wait to read more of hers! This story was equal parts sweet & heartbreaking.
It takes place in 1917-1918 with a flash forward at the end. Set in Charleston, SC with some moments in France. Each chapter is a different POV ~ there are 3 POVs and while, in some books, that can be confusing & hard to keep up with, that was not the case at all with this. The author did such a good job weaving all of the POVs seamlessly and it never felt jarring to switch between them. It isn’t overtly faith-filled but there are a few mentions of church & God. There are a few cuss words used (4-5 d**n & 1-2 h**l) which normally isn’t my preference but they weren’t overtly in your face so it didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story at all! The romance is so sweet, and clean and the ending was beautiful and tied everything up perfectly!
It does take place during WWI, so there are some war scenes. They aren’t overly intense/violent, but the seriousness, as well as the aftermath of it, is not glossed over….the author did a superb job showing how it changed the lives of everyone ~ no matter if they came from money & privilege or not.
I REALLY enjoyed this story and am so glad I read it! It kept good pace, kept my attention, and there were a couple surprising twists that were really well done too!
If you like historical fiction then you will absolutely enjoy this! It releases February 27 so keep your eye out for it!
* This is book 2 in a 3 book series. I own book 1 but have not read it yet. As far as I could tell, there were no spoilers in book 2 if you haven’t read 1 yet.*
*Thank you to the author for my advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own and have not been influenced in any way*
It’s official — I love everything that Emily Ann writes! She drew me into this story with her compelling characters and I did not want to put this book down. All of the characters grow and change over the course of the United States’ involvement in WWI. Even though she was spoiled and comes from money, I instantly liked Helen Woodard because underneath her facade, she had a good heart, and I wanted to go on the journey of maturing alongside her. My favorite sage character was Helen’s grandmother, who always provided her with a dose of reality, tough love, and wisdom. Helen’s brother, Lucas, starts off as a spoiled brat, but he is dissatisfied with himself and the war finally gives him a chance to change all that. And John, a working-class man who has never had anything for himself, has a talent for fixing things. The US Navy notices his talents, leading him on a path to love and war that he never dreamed of. He was definitely my favorite and the most charming character.❤️ The antagonists were also interesting and multi-dimensional. They kept me guessing ‘til the very end. All these characters worked together to create a story about the effects of war on individuals and class structure as a whole.
It was also fascinating to read about sabotage and collusion with Germany during WWI since I knew so little about this topic. I learned so much about WWI history and I was absolutely educated by the authors’ note, detailing the true historical figures and events that were involved in the story.
As with everything Emily Ann writes, I was sad to leave the characters and can’t wait to read the next book in this series!
Wow! Another amazing story by Emily Ann! Book 2 of Valiant Devotion series did not disappoint!
Where I stand is set during World War 1, closely following siblings, Helen and Lucas, and their new friend, John. Both John and Lucas are drafted, but both end up doing vastly different things in the war. Helen is left in Charleston to navigate the expectations of a young single woman in high society. Discovering what love is truly about and making a decision that could change her life in unexpected ways.
This story is stunning! I loved every second of it! Emily Ann knows how to write a romance that has all the grit, the fight, the struggle, and still pulls at your heart strings with the sweetest moments. There were moments of shock, frustrations, heartbreak, and at times you are sitting at the edge of your seat. And when you least expect it, you get swept off your feet with the most beautiful thing.
The character build is perfection! The way the character’s grow throughout the story is amazing. Each having their own issues and hurdles to overcome and you can tell the author knows how to get you emotionally attached!
Written in three pov’s, there is no confusion about the storylines. Everything is laid out smoothly. They become intertwined right what they need to and the story comes together beautifully.
If you’re looking for a clean romance that also doesn’t shy away from tough issues; then Where I Stand should be your next read! Emily Ann is truly talented and I can’t wait to read Book 3 when it comes out!
What struck me most about this beautiful story was the stark description of the indiscrimination of war and death. Emily Ann does a masterful job painting a vivid picture of the vanity and poverty classes meeting together on the same level plane in the trenches of World War 2, and back home with those who grieve loved ones lost. I was completely immersed in her vivid descriptions of both emotion and setting! Her writing style is flawless and very comfortable to read.
Each character arc is the chef’s kiss. I love Helen’s internal battle to decide what matters most in life, and John’s desire to mean something and be respected as an individual. Lucas might just be my favourite, going from status to the dust, yet growing the opposite way inside.
While there are mentions of God, faith, and going to Church, it is a subtle underlayer, rather than an overarching theme. The romance is closed door, with a few kisses only. There are few instances of the *D word. The violence of war is honest but without the gore.
If you are a fan of historical fiction and clean romance, this story will transport you back in time and touch your heart with a masterful story of family, war, and love. *I received a free copy of this story as an ARC reader. All thoughts and opinions are exclusively my own.
Where I stand is a three person Point of view, enemies to lovers, slow burn, historical fiction. It takes place in World War I with Helen, John and Lucas. It shows us what each one goes through and experiences during that time period regardless of social class or titles. They each loved, persevered and gained personal growth in a time of turmoil. This was my first book by this author and it will not be my last. I loved it from the very beginning. This is the 2nd book in the Valiant Devotion series but it is a standalone. I definitely will be reading the first one. Historical fiction is my all time favorite and this one did not disappoint. Will definitely be reading this one again. Thank you Emily Ann for choosing me to be a part of your ARC Team. Its an honor. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🤌😘💖
I am a military veteran and spouse to a military retiree and this book pulled at my heart strings from so many different angles. I really loved Helen. Her love for her Granna, her passion for creating, the work she put into the victory garden, and the love she fought against with John. I was so happy that true love won!! I especially liked the weaving of historical facts into the story and how the author explains it all at the end of the book. Highly recommend.
Is a historical fiction romance with three POV and sabotage. I didn’t expect to fall in love with these characters the way I did. I was cheering some on along the way and almost in tears at other times. If you love romance and learning a bit of history, I highly recommend this book. Emily did a wonderful job intertwining nonfiction with fiction making this a beautiful story.
Another fantastic novel from Emily Ann! I love that she writes about periods of history that are not as popular in historical fiction. I feel like I’m learning something along with enjoying the story! I loved all of the character development that both main characters go through, and found the main conflict really exciting. Over all a great historical romance!
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are my own.
I was not sure what to expect from this. It was my first time ARC reading a book. I was blown away by how good this book was! The characters were so well developed and the storyline was so enjoyable. I loved everything about it! I can't wait to read more from this author.
I really enjoyed book one in this series and was very excited to revisit Charleston in another time period, especially since I am in Charleston at the moment. This was the perfect time for me to pick up this book.
I enjoyed the scenery and vivid descriptions the author uses. I also like the creative liberty she used regarding the SS San Diego. It was a genius idea for a twist I didn’t see coming!
Though I liked the book, I couldn’t connect well with the characters like in book one. The banter seemed a bit forced between John and Helen in my opinion and the romance was just too slow with barely any scenes with them to show their attraction. So much time passed, and I understand the characters had other things going on because of the war. And some of their actions felt a bit off, going from 0 to 100 so quickly.
This was such a moving story though. I recommend it!
This one wrecked me. Emily Ann did such an amazing job painting the characters that I was able to connect with them super early on. I became super invested in their story and at one point I was crying and screaming at them all!
Set in 1917, in Charleston, we meet three of the main characters: John, Helen and Lucas. Being unlikely friends, we get to see how their story intertwines.
John is a blue collar mechanic who ended up in Charleston for a fresh start. He was employed at the Woodard's garage in town.
Lucas Woodard was John's boss at the garage. He grew up in Charleston and his family was well-known and rather well-off. He fooled around and didn't take to working with his hands. He became friends with his mechanic, John.
Helen Woodard was Lucas's sister. Coming from the same family, she was expected to marry into another prestigious family now that she was "of-age". These expectations couldn't convince her heart not to fall for her brother's mechanic, however.
World War I impacted their little town, and soon John and Lucas were both drafted. All of their lives were turned upside down. We got to follow their adventures on deployment as well as Helen's as she was left behind.
Author Emily Ann did an amazing job researching and putting us right into the time period. It was a hard one to put down until the last page and has been really hard to pick up another one since...my brain is stuck on this one.
This is the first time I’ve read a book from author Emily Ann and it won’t be the last I loved this book it was so good . It was historical fiction that takes place during WW 1 and some can be boring but this was far from that ! During war and historical books there can also can be violence and cursing and this is a clean book that Christian’s can read . This is the second book in a three part series I want to go back and read the first one so I can read the third one when it comes out next . I was blessed to be a part of an arc team. Thank you Emily Ann for picking me as part of your team
