"Insta-love/lust" isn't my favorite trope, but The Witch's Pet by Tiana Warner is very well done. The fast-paced, entertaining plot makes this a quick read. There is the current timeline with some flashbacks and a sense of urgency that makes the stakes feel high. The characters are surprising and complex. It is hard to like Julia, but Warner still elicits sympathy. Hannah displays an unexpected strength in her growth from the person we meet in the first scene.
There is a ton of chemistry and sexual tension, as well as spicy scenes. The curse, the lust, the ticking time until moonset, and the physical intimacy muddle the emotions. I am not sure whether we are meant to conclude that there is a deeper love at play. The ending is left a bit open.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and found it very engaging. I am a fan of this author.

I had read another book by this author before, so I was excited to get the opportunity to read this one. The story takes place over a day or so time period, so things move fast. Hannah, you can totally sympathize with. She just got dumped by her girlfriend Riley. She burns a book and ends up shackled so to speak to a vengeful witch. Julia, is a dark sanguine witch playing up the evil aspect. I'm a huge fan of dark romantasy, to me this falls a bit short.
Julia is a bit 1 dimensional, I think if her character was given a bit more to work with, then I would have enjoyed her more. My disconnection to that character seemed to take away from my enjoyment.
To me this was a good story, but not great.

Yet another book I don’t have any strong feelings about. I’m finding I don’t love romances with some sort of supernatural element that impacts the romance itself and its believability. For example, in this book these two are bound together through this spell and also Julia feeds on Hannah’s essence through this intimate “feeding” ritual. Because of these elements, there’s an aspect of the story where both characters but Hannah specifically wrestle with if their feelings are because they are actually interested in the other person or if it’s a result of the magic. This book helped me realize that I don’t enjoy this element in romances because it weakens the believability of the two love interests’ connection to one another. It leaves a door open for doubting the strength and authenticity of their connection to one another, which is not a door I want to be open when reading about a romance. I want to believe the characters really truly care about each other and love one another without any sort of outside influence and having a magical element like this makes that impossible.
That is just some thing that I’ve realized that I don’t particularly like in romances. That being said if you are someone who likes that type of element in romances this book is for you for sure. This book also has the classic dark romance trope of one of the characters being like “I shouldn’t want this, but I do anyways” which is I think the underlying arc of any dark romance in the history of the universe. Maybe I’m just also tired of that arc because it’s just repetitive and I’ve read it before and that bled into my enjoyment of the book.
In summary, no strong thoughts. There were a couple things I didn’t love, but I don’t feel that strongly about them.

This book was impossible for me to put down. I opened it and sat on the couch all afternoon reading it.
Juliet and Hannah compelled me to keep turning pages. Their lust and eventual love fed a primal hunger in me.
I enjoyed that this book touched on so many different things, from vulnerability to addiction to overcoming nature.
I love how Rebecca ended things with Juliet and Hannah ended things with Riley. There was this parallelism in harsh, jagged conclusions. And it took guts for Tiana not to simply smooth everything over. Because it's realistic to know that some wounds will never heal, some wrongs will never be forgiven, and maybe neutrality is the best possible outcome after a century of hateful poison. It was refreshing to read such a blunt ending.
Oh, and the spice? Excellent.

I got to read this as an ARC and absolutely loved it. I couldn't put it down. It was so refreshing to have a young FMC who wasn't flighty or annoying. I loved Julia as a character, her inner struggles and character arc are amazing. Hannah's feelings of abandonment are written so well I was brought to tears, the true sign of an excellent book. I will definitely be checking out more of this author's books.

I enjoyed this book so much! I appreciated how our younger MC, Hannah, was portrayed. She didn’t feel immature or flighty or even overly mature. Most of the time I just wanted to jump in the book and hold her close to protect and care for her!
Julia is our older MC and a witch that feeds on life force and awakens to find over a hundred years have passed and she’s also bound to Hannah which means she can’t leave her nor can she suck her life force dry. Julia had a beautiful character arc and I loved getting her pov.
Fast paced but well developed. Forced proximity at its finest ;). Recommend!

3/5 stars. the witch’s pet markets itself as a dark sapphic romantasy, featuring the forced proximity trope and a morally grey witch who feeds on the life force of humans. the novella is written in dual POVs between said witch and an ordinary human girl (one who's fresh from a recent heartbreak). in a nutshell: girl accidentally binds witch to her, girl refuses to let witch feed on innocents, girl decides to let witch feed on her instead while looking for a way to break their binding. i was excited for this based on the blurb and couldn't wait to read it, but it unfortunately didn't deliver exactly what i was hoping for.
firstly, just a note that the entire novella takes place in the span of a single day, meaning that insta-love is unavoidable and character development is limited. things moved very quickly, and the reader doesn't have much time to build an interest in the characters or their relationship amidst the whirlwind of activity happening. despite the limited word count, the characters' internal monologues felt repetitive and juvenile at times, to the point where i'd categorize this as new adult. speaking of categorization, i echo other reviewers who mentioned that this doesn't quite lean into the 'dark' part of its blurb - perhaps in the first part of the book, but it veers very much into 'toxic but recovering and eventually wholesome' territory afterward. disappointing, but the early sections had some moments i loved.

Surprisingly, I wish this had more drama. But I’m also evil soooo maybe don’t listen to me. Anyways, this was fun! A gay ass age gap with a murdering witch? Period! Say less. When it comes to darker sapphic romances I truly never care about these woman’s crimes. The darker they are, the more I’m defending them lowk. Every time they were harping on Julia for being evil I was like ugh your honor! yes she did all but… what even ever. Like who cares bruh. Leave her aloneee.

DNF around 75%.
The concept sounded really good. Human burns book. Brings back witch. Witch needs to feed on life forces. Witch is bound to human. Witch feeds off of human. They end up together.
The execution, however, did not live up to my expectations. The entire book is one night (which I didn't know about), so insta-lust and insta-love are inevitable. If done well, I can go along with it. But it did not work for me here.
Julia is horrible. She didn't have a great childhood, yes, but that doesn't give her the right to be a horrible witch. Yes, she is forced to feed off of others' life forces, but she doesn't need to kill people to do so. I get she did this when she was young and had no one to help her, but when she joined the coven, why the heck didn't they help her? Teach her? Anything? When Julia is awoken, the head coven witch lady starts talking about how there are other ways blah blah blah, and Julia reacts astonished? So ... did they not teach her anything? Help her at all? What the heck?
So, yeah, Julia is not great, and she is not great toward Hannah. There is insta-lust immediately, and she uses Hannah to get what she wants. She keeps going back and forth from wanting to use Hannah, wanting to protect Hannah, and just not caring if she ends up hurting Hannah (emotionally or physically). I got whiplash from how much Julia get switching from each of these feelings. And she's supposed to go from this horrible witch to caring and protecting Hannah in one night?? Ha. Let's not forget the weird ritual they decided to do where Julia needs to have s*x with Hannah's ex in order to break Julia an Hannah's curse/bond. What the heck was that? Ugh. Just no.
Now, onto Hannah. She annoyed me. At first, she was okay. She decided to give up her life force in order to stop Julia from taking other people's life force and killing them. Totally on board with that! What I was not on board with, however, is how she was with her ex, Riley (I think) as well as how she was with Julia after Julia left her after s*x. Okay, first how she was with Riley (and Riley's aunt/whatever familial connection they have): UGH.

Riley broke up with Hannah because Riley found out she was a witch. Why couldn't she tell Hannah? I don't know. That whole thing made no sense. Anyway, when Hannah and Riley meet up again, Riley reacted so jealous over the fact that Julia fed off of Hannah and blamed Hannah? It was weird. And the way that Hannah felt bad? I am so confused. Also, Riley's aunt (?) used her magic to show Hannah the past, but why the heck did Hannah let Riley's aunt touch her in the first place when Hannah knows that it was Riley's aunt that cursed her to Julia with no regard toward Hannah? Ridiculous.
Hannah's feelings toward Julia were okay at first? She lusted after Julia and was confused by it. I can get that. However, when Julia keeps acting horrible and Hannah keeps seeing it and having to stop Julia, Hannah keeps being like "Julia is horrible ... but she's so hot" .... excuse me? No. Then, when Hannah submits to Julia to break their bond and Julia leaves her after Hannah passes out, Hannah is upset (for good reason!) but is still "but ... she's so hot ..." AND THEN, when they have to find another way for them to break the bond, Hannah immediately dismisses the painful way in order to do the s*x way where Julia and Riley would need to have s*x in front of her????? What?
I gave up when they started the ritual. I got so annoyed with all the back and forth with their feelings and thoughts with each other as well as how they overlooked things because "she's hot."

Okay so this was weird and I have a lot of thoughts about it.
There was a scene of dubious consent in the book (not between two MCs) that made me so uncomfortable that I almost DNF. The scene where Julia feeds on was bad for me. despised and was disgusted by Julia, she did not want to be fed on my Julia, and she only agreed to it in order to help/ Hannah. Agreeing to something sexual because refusal carries dire consequences is NOT consent!! The feeding was sexual (like did it really have to be??), and the author made us watch it from Hannah's POV, and it was gross. This lack of true consent was made even worse by the magical coercion aspect of it: became powerless to resist or revoke her (already dubious) consent once Julia started feeding, even as Julia was ! It was one of the rapiest scenes I've ever read and I hated it. I like dark romances but this scene really crossed a line for me. On her website, the author simply lists 'Dubious consent (magical coercion)' as a content warning, but I don't think this accurately reflects what happened and fails to prepare readers for this scene.
I don't understand why the author chose to make the timeline/deadline for this romance one single night. It was rushed and I had a hard time believing that the characters could fall for each other so quickly, or that all those scenes could have realistically occurred in one night. Especially all the bus rides! Why on earth would the author not just give Hannah a car, or have her rent one? They rode the bus like 4 times in one night and I just want to know what kind of magical bus runs all night long to all these random ass stops that they wanted to go to, even one "far outside the city," exactly whenever they wanted to go to them? I could not suspend my disbelief for this
Rebecca hates Julia for and her way of exacting revenge against Rebecca is... damning a random innocent person to the same horrible fate as ? Really? If she then how could Rebecca condemn another innocent woman with not only indifference (which I could probably understand) but genuine sadistic glee? She wasn't the least bit apologetic about the collateral damage of ruining Hannah's entire life. Confusingly, Rebecca and later stage a sort of intervention where they warn Hannah about the dangers of getting too close to Julia. As if Hannah has any other choice! And Rebecca is the bitch who fucked her over and put her in this impossible position in the first place! Some anger or hatred from Hannah towards Rebecca would have been reasonable and justified but that was entirely, frustratingly absent
In the last third of the book the characters speak with an inhuman amount of insight which felt very unnatural (they maybe did this earlier also but this is when it became obvious). It was particularly bad in the climax and resolution, literally every character just spells everything out for you in monologue. Talk about telling instead of showing, the characters literally just tell you everything you need to know, and then they tell you it again and again but rephrased.
The romance was a flop, it was like insta-lust leading to insta-love and I just didn't understand why these characters even liked each other let alone fell for each other. I found them both to be annoying and unlikeable.

Rebecca hates Julia for and her way of exacting revenge against Rebecca is... damning a random innocent person to the same horrible fate as ? Really? If she then how could Rebecca condemn another innocent woman with not only indifference (which I could probably understand) but genuine sadistic glee? She wasn't the least bit apologetic about the collateral damage of ruining Hannah's entire life. Confusingly, Rebecca and later stage a sort of intervention where they warn Hannah about the dangers of getting too close to Julia. As if Hannah has any other choice! And Rebecca is the bitch who fucked her over and put her in this impossible position in the first place! Some anger or hatred from Hannah towards Rebecca would have been reasonable and justified but that was entirely, frustratingly absent
In the last third of the book the characters speak with an inhuman amount of insight which felt very unnatural (they maybe did this earlier also but this is when it became obvious). It was particularly bad in the climax and resolution, literally every character just spells everything out for you in monologue. Talk about telling instead of showing, the characters literally just tell you everything you need to know, and then they tell you it again and again but rephrased.
The romance was a flop, it was like insta-lust leading to insta-love and I just didn't understand why these characters even liked each other let alone fell for each other. I found them both to be annoying and unlikeable.

I was really excited to pick this up because sapphic dark romances are still pretty rare, and the premise sounded amazing. While I don’t think the execution fully lived up to the potential for me, I can see what the author was going for. The story moves very quickly from the start, which gave it a fast-paced feel, though I personally wanted a bit more time to emotionally connect with the characters.
Julia, in particular, was harder for me to connect with. Even after learning about her past and seeing moments of vulnerability, I still struggled to fully warm up to her character. That said, I did appreciate that the story shows she’s capable of caring. I connected more with Hannah, and her growth felt more natural to me. By the end, I really enjoyed seeing her step into her power throughout the story.
The romance itself was a bit hit-or-miss for me. The enemies-to-lovers transition felt a little fast, and there’s definitely an insta-lust/insta-love element. Personally, I tend to prefer more emotional buildup in romance, because that’s what makes the relationship feel grounded for me. Here when they eventually start opening up to each other, I wanted to feel a bit more emotional payoff, but I can see how it might work better for readers who enjoy faster-paced romance development.
The ending left me curious about what could happen next. It feels like it could set up a sequel, which I would be interested in seeing, especially to explore the characters and world more deeply.
Overall, this one wasn’t a perfect match for me personally, but I can definitely see why others would enjoy it. If you like fast-paced dark romance, morally gray characters, and forced proximity, this might be a great pick for you.

Bleh.. this one was a bit of a disappointment.
I was pretty excited when I saw this book was going to be released soon. An age gap romance between a witch and a human sounded right up my alley, so I was waiting not so patiently for it to come out. But if I had known the entire plot of the book would take place across about twelve hours, I don't think I would have been so excited.
The extremely short time frame for the narrative means the whole novel just felt so rushed. The relationship between Hannah and Julia was so tumultuous and unsettled, and we never got to see it actually take form beyond the pull of their bind. I've said multiple times before that I don't necessarily have a problem with insta-love, but it's no-love I can't stand. This relationship was the latter.
Another consequence of the rushed plot was the magic system. Everything was explained at a breakneck pace, and new elements and traditions were thrown at us without any time for them to be properly fleshed out. So much of it was described vaguely as "powers" the witches had. This problem wasn't helped by the alternating first person narration, which basically just told us the entire narrative instead of showing it take place. Seriously, first person has to be my least favourite point of view.
The whole time I was reading this novel, I kept thinking it felt more like a movie than a book - in a bad way. The first half was basically just a MacGuffin hunt, and the second just reminded me of the 4th Matrix movie and how it was just an assault of poorly introduced ideas and concepts.
I don't know. I really didn't like it. I'm not giving it a one star review because I save that for books that actively made me mad, but I really didn't find this novel enjoyable at all. Oh, and the ending is just a massive brick wall with no conclusion or follow-up to Julia and Hannah's journey (if it was long enough to even call it that).

The story follows Hannah, a young woman who finds herself inexplicably bound to a recently freed witch, when she decided to burn her ex-girlfriends stuff. Julia, has been in slumber for over 100 years in a book, only to wake up tied to another that she cannot escape unless she can break the spell. Thus Hannah and Julia find themselves in a race against time to break the curse that has bound them together, or risk being stuck together for eternity.
This book feels like an homage to Agatha All Along, it isn't that story line but Julia has many qualities that remind me of Agatha. She is an older witch that had success in her prime, feeds off others which can lead to their deaths, willfully accepting of villain title, and spent a long time trapped. If you like Agatha, you will likely like Julia. I did enjoy her story arc but morally gray characters are not my favorite. Hannah, while young and seems naive, has a strong moral code and spine to stand up against Julia. She handled the uprooting of everything she knows well and runs with the change in scenery very well. I don't think I would take to finding out magic was real by being attached to a witch that feeds off of people.
All in all, the book was well written and the story flew by. The characters were well thought out and very complimentary. The two items that keep it from a higher score from me, is the speed in which everything happens. The entirety of the book takes place in a very short amount of time, which makes some of the connections feel rushed, and the other is the "villain" has the MC trope are not generally what I go for.
I would recommend it for fans of Agatha All Along and dark urban fantasy.

Wow, I absolutely loved everything about this book! Right from the start, I connected with Hannah as she dramatically burns all of her ex’s belongings in her backyard. When a thick old book is accidentally reduced to ash, it sparks a chain reaction of events she never could’ve anticipated. Watching Hannah rise to the challenge and fully lean into her badass side was incredibly satisfying.

Overall, I had a fun time with this one. The first half of the book really pulled me in. I was enjoying the setup, the tone, and watching the characters start to develop. As the story moved into the second half, though, I started to feel like something was missing. The pacing and emotional payoff didn't quite land the way I hoped.
One of the highlights for me was Hannah's growth throughout the story. I liked seeing how she evolved and where she ultimately ended up by the end of the book; it felt satisfying and earned. Julia, on the other hand, was the character I struggled with the most towards the end of the book, which is a shame, as I did enjoy delving into her background and finding out the struggles she was facing as she tried to adjust to a "new world". She's meant to be complex and difficult to read, so she should have benefited from having more development time throughout the story. I felt like she ended up "developing" in the last chapter, and because of that, I never fully connected with her, and by the end, she came across as more selfish and stubborn than intriguing.
However, even with those issues, the book was still an enjoyable read. It's light, entertaining, and easy to get through, and I had a good time with it overall. I'll definitely still be checking out more of Tiana Warner's work in the future.

What can I say? I discovered Tiana through her Eriana Kwai trilogy which made me devour it like I'd been starving for ages. It was everything I could ever want. Colorful writing, yearning, female warriors, mermaids.. utter perfection.
That being said I've struggled getting into her other books. Perhaps it's the tonal shift, or the content, but they held little interest. I intend to try again, but I digress. When I saw this book being advertised as one of the spiciest things she's written and it was about witches and dark sapphic desire I was excited.
Reading it...I both enjoyed and loathed it. The concept feels very much like a Wanda/Agatha Harkness fanfic given life. This is not a complaint. I love books that feel like fanfics. However, as short as it was, it often seemed as if it could be shorter for the repetition and back and forth inner monologues that seemed unnecessary. There was none of the colorful writing, and all in all it felt rushed.
It was an easy read, but there was so much potential for more depth and darkness, and I'm unfortunately left unsatisfied. But I finished it, and I'm obsessed with Julia Moreau, so....

LOVED this novel as much as I loved the forest scene! When a young woman called Hannah is suddenly broken up with by her girlfriend Riley, she’s devastated. She decides to move on by burning all of Riley’s possessions that she left behind in a bonfire she starts with her best friend. After she burns mainly everything, there’s a journal left behind that Riley had used to write poems for her in. There’s an inscription inside that Hannah can’t make out, and never asked about. Her best friend warns her that she should keep that one item, but she doesn’t listen to his suggestion and burns it once she’s alone. All of a sudden, a beautiful and older witch called Julia appears in the remains of the fire, ash surrounding them. They both find out that they’re bonded to one another and have very little time left to break the spell that a celestial witch cast before they’re linked together for eternity and if one dies, so does the other. Julia gets weaker by the second, needing to feed on essence as a sanguine witch. Hannah doesn’t want her to hurt anyone else, so she offers herself up. Soul tied, they can’t escape eachother, but do they even want to?

Couple thoughts. The latin used more complex grammar than your usual witch mumblings, which I really appreciated.
If it's 5 in the morning and I've been running around a strange city all night, I am tired, I am cranky, I am hungry. I've got a splitting headache from not having a sip of water in the past 12 hours. I am certainly not horny, not matter what type of fairy tale creature is accompanyig me.
Furthermore, if my master plan is to capture my nemesis in a magic trap, waiting for someone to unwittingly free her. And I truely believe that this will be a death sentence for this stranger, why would I keep the cursed journal in my family, instead of giving it away? I assumed Rebecca died suddenly and her family divied up her estate, but no, she's just kind of around. She's probably aware her granddaughter has the book (I would be keeping tabs on it), and on yhe inside cover it says "Please cast me into the fires, kthxbye". Just irresponsible pedagogy all around tbh

You have these hilarious banter twists thrown in amongst soul wrenching feels and then dangerously craved passion that you feel upside down and inside out on the same page.
I need a nap.
“Clever little pest,” I growl.
“Murderous antique,” she shoots back.
Then let's just toss this in the pot and stir....
"That is what truly made me the monster. Not a single moment of violence, but a thousand small decisions to take a little more."
The writing is stupidly poignant. It is exhaustive. The MCs, damned, beautifully damned. The supporting characters? Damningly beautiful.
The plot? Read the damn book.

3.3/5 with a spice level of 4/5. The spice is definitely there, but the story itself is a bit mixed.

However, it does improve toward the end, where the relationship and tension start to feel more engaging. It’s a decent read if you’re here for spice and an interesting supernatural setup. I've long since been a fan of Tiana Warner, so I was looking forward to this new book. The time limit added a nice bit of tension and desperation to the plot, but, as other reviewers have said, the romance was extremely insta-love since it happened in a single night. Still, despite its few shortcomings, I quite enjoyed the story. Julia's mysteriousness was pretty alluring, though I do wish there had been more information revealed about her. Hannah was determined, kind and brave; she was impossible not to root for. I know that a lot of the tension would have probably been lost if the timeline had been expanded, but I do think the story would have benefitted in the end. Well, maybe there'll be a sequel, which I'd love to see.

This is a well written and addictive fantasy, with a push and pull intensive love affair between a young woman Hannah and an old witch Julia. The worldbuilding is fantastic, I admire the author's vivid imagination and the characters real and interesting. But throughout the book, I have a strong dislike of Julia, whose exist depending on draining other people's life energy, a ruthless killer, selfish and totally disregard others' lives. I don't understand why smart and kindhearted Hannah falls for such a cold witch even fully knowing her criminal history. The book ends on a bright note, a hint of happily ever after, but I just can't imagine how the couple can be truly happy together, Julia has to be totally transformed from her witchy ways and find other methods to stay alive.

It was hot, loved the witchy elements, always love some forced proximity and the characters weren’t flat, they have their issues that clearly impacted them.
I think the main issue for me was that this all took place within one night. Like no way that character development/ acceptance of things happened that quickly. And also because of that time frame, it does have a bit of an instalove aspect, which is done better than in most books (isn’t as clear cut as instantly being in love) but still isn’t a great trope in my opinion.
It does also feel like the world building is very specifically set up for this romance story and could have more depth.

Well done, Tiana Warner...
This book is written from the perspective of both of the main characters - and who doesn't love an enemies to lovers plot. This is one that gives you something to get started with by giving a splash of spice, cools it down to a slow burn, just to burn you up into an inferno on the edge of your seat as you race to read the next word.
My only dislike? No sequel lol. I need more about this story...but I'm kind of greedy like that. I'll avoid spoilers, but I will say this book was a pleasant surprise. Lovers of books like kiss of seduction will truly enjoy this one as well I think. 4.5 stars.

Well I really enjoyed this one. Julia's nature was written in her genes, but can she choose to be something else, someone different. The struggle and torment was delicious. As for Hannah - I normally cringe at 20 something year olds ... but she was well written too. Young and naive yes, but without the entitlement and horrid attitudes that lace many youths these days. In fact - Julia has more of that, which serves to bridge the age-gap. And somehow - it works. The whole book spans only the one night, which was a bit head-scratching at first. But it made sense as the story developed. Different. And well done.
