Coresystem: The Spectre Protocol is an outstanding blend of space opera, cyberpunk tension, and philosophical science fiction that fully immerses the reader in a dark and compelling vision of the future. Set in the year 2507, the novel presents a humanity that has spread across multiple planets and reached what seems to be the peak of its evolution, only for that illusion to be disrupted by a mysterious and deeply unsettling threat emerging from deep space.
At the heart of the story are two contrasting yet equally engaging characters: Jaromir Taylor, a scrap collector surviving on the fringes of society, and Aaron Cooper, a genetically enhanced elite soldier. Their reluctant partnership evolves in a way that feels natural and emotionally grounded, shifting from tension and mistrust to a complex, believable connection. This dynamic not only drives the narrative forward but also gives the story a strong emotional core that makes the stakes feel personal.
Schoenenberg’s world-building is one of the novel’s greatest strengths. The setting is rich, layered, and filled with a sense of looming unease, shaped by political control and overwhelming technological influence. Coresystem had me hooked from the very beginning. I found Jaro to be a realistic main character who actually reacted like a regular person to his circumstances. The book reminded me of Andy Weir's novels where quick wits and science overcome most issues.

This is like a Star Wars world, but with Halo badass army fighters and a nerd hero! I was SO invested in Jaro’s journey. I loved how the author brought multiple stories together. It was done so well! The characters are funny and relatable. That ending had me on the edge of my seat! Can’t wait for the next book to see where the journey goes! (official review to come!)
