Rate this book
If you had one year to make a business profitable, could you do it?When a mid-level tech worker is unexpectedly offered the chance to run his company’s new branch, it feels like the opportunity of a lifetime. The deal is if he can make it profitable within a year, he’ll secure a big promotion, long-term job security, and the respect he’s always craved. If he fails, the branch will be shut down and he’ll be fired—along with all his new employees.

Beyond the professional risks, success could finally prove to his ex-girlfriend that he’s ambitious enough to be the partner she always wanted. Failure would confirm every criticism she made when she walked away—and mean losing her forever.

With no training, no safety net, and everything on the line, he dives straight in—only to realize he’s in way over his head and has no one to turn to…until he stumbles into an unlikely source of the neighborhood all-you-can-eat buffet. There, amid the steam trays and sneeze guards, he receives guidance that will test him, transform him, and possibly save his career!

Told with humor, heart, and plenty of surprises, The Buffet blends the charm of a novel with the insight of a business parable, offering 50 practical lessons on leadership, resilience, and success—each short, memorable, and immediately applicable to your own professional journey.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a manager, or anyone seeking growth, The Buffet serves up an unforgettable feast of wisdom.

The Buffet is one of those rare books that sneaks up on you.

At first, I thought this would be a book I’d read slowly, savoring one or two chapters at a time. The chapters are wonderfully bite-sized, making it easy to dip in for ten minutes or settle in for longer stretches without ever feeling lost when returning. But somewhere along the way, it quietly transformed into a story I couldn’t put down.

The humor alone makes this book a joy. I laughed out loud more times than I can count. The chapter titles, the customer nicknames, and especially the narrator’s inner dialogue are all perfectly executed. The dialogue feels alive and natural, and the pacing never drags or becomes repetitive, which is no small feat given the structure.

What struck me most was how seamlessly the lessons unfold through story. There’s a moment where, as a reader, you wonder if the narrator will ever fully connect the experiences at The Buffet with the lessons he’s learning. And then he does. That moment of realization mirrors the reader’s own, creating a deep sense of trust in the journey. I found myself relaxing into the experience, confident that it was worth my time.

Certain moments stayed with me long after finishing the book. The Waiter became a story I could immediately retell in my own life, catching myself in familiar patterns. The Matcha Man is unforgettable, especially how its theme quietly circles back at the end. The Pasta Guru arrived on exactly the day I needed that reminder. And the closing moment of the book landed for me like a gentle expansion, something universal and quietly profound.

By the end, I felt complete. Satisfied. A little teary, which is always a good sign. The book left me feeling more forgiving toward my past self, more trusting of my future self, and genuinely fond of the narrator and the cast of characters. It’s the kind of book that makes you want to talk about the characters as if they’re real people and press it into the hands of others saying, “You’ll get this.”

I imagine The Buffet will resonate deeply with small business owners, leaders, and anyone navigating growth, change, or self-reflection. If I still had employees, I’d give them a copy. It’s a story about paying attention, staying curious, and recognizing that every obstacle carries the seed of opportunity, if we’re willing to look.

The Buffet is a powerful, entertaining story that is both wise and full of heart. It provides invaluable guidance for business – and life – in such an interesting way that you lose sight of the fact that you’re learning while reading. There are too many takeaways to count, so I’ll simply say this: if you’re looking to level up your professional game with integrity, or to step into the best version of yourself, read The Buffet! You'll be glad you did. But first, a warning: make sure to have some food on hand, because it will make you ravenous!
