Very good set of essays that work towards the question of what it means to be an American, how Americans define themselves, freedom, individualism and democracy. Many of the essays around the role of the individual in society and the function of government are very topical for today. The last two essays on Universities deviate somewhat from the topic but I found interesting in that what Ward is writing about (role of Universities as places for teaching and the responsibility that comes with that and what people see "learning" as) is still being debated today. So everything new is old.

Should get republished by NYRB.
