“Why do you assume the worst in us, Marian?” “Because you’re a criminal,” I snapped back. “Some crimes need to be committed.” “No, they don’t.” Now I was getting angry. “The law must be upheld. Otherwise you’ve got anarchy.” “I guess it’s escaped your attention that we already have anarchy.”
In this bold Robin Hood reimagining, Dallas teen Marian Fitzwalter is uprooted to Barnsdale County, Alabama, a hotbed of corruption. Reeling from the move, she meets Robert Loxley, a defiant rebel branded a common thug. His brazen defiance sparks her suspicion, their encounters charged with mistrust and a tension she cannot ignore. Digging into the town’s sinister secrets, she’s ensnared in a dangerous web. As peril closes in, will justice come from the law—or the outlaw?
T. Rogers is a new author bringing it from the Dirty South. T. is a husband, father, paramedic, meme addict, firearms enthusiast, and occasional shitposter. Fueled by caffeine and sarcasm, T. is drawn to anti-heroes, flawed protagonists, punchy dialog, and underdog stories. Any narrative, from urban and supernatural fantasy to crime and angst, are within his wheelhouse. No subject, no genre, no tale is off limits. T. lives with his family in small-town Alabama and when not writing is either cheering on the Crimson Tide or sitting in the corner with a drink in his hand, silently judging you.
I give this awesome Robin Hood retelling 5 stars with one caveat below.
Overall this is a bold, imaginative, and ambitious opening to a modernized telling of Robin Hood from Marion's perspective and set in the US – and I'm all for it.
Super fun read and promises way more to come. Some great action and banter throughout, fun character development playing off known classics with some great twists, and an easy but thought-out writing style that I enjoyed.
Only caveat:
Caveat aside, it's a solid read, and I'm genuinely excited for the next installment.
