Wow! I have to say that I am very impressed with this book. It is absolutely NOT the type of book that I normally read. As a matter of fact, the opposite is true. I usually avoid books set around war time, especially WWI and WWII. Furthermore, I don't particularly care for books set in the early 1900's, and I don't usually read books set in European countries, other than Great Britain (although, over the years, I have read a few set in France and Russia.) This book had all three factors...it's set in 1914, during WWI, in Belgium! LOL I don't know how or why I decided to read it, other than that I was in a really weird mood and wanted to try something different.
It was slow going; it took me five days to read it when I usually read a book in a day to a day and half. I confess that whenever I had to put the book down I was easily able to do so--so it wasn't gripping--but while I was reading it, the story kept me thoroughly engaged. I really enjoyed Ms. Andrews' writing style, and the book was extremely well edited, which was a pleasant surprise, considering that so many e-books are plagued with grammatical mistakes. Honestly, I don't remember encountering a single mistake, and that is absolutely unheard of with an e-book! Moreover, Ms. Andrews did a really nice job with her characters, who are all so well developed that they seemed almost real. I know I certainly expended a lot of energy hating Laila's parents and her sister! LOL AIn addition, there is the setting; Ms. Andrews' extensive research into the time period is obvious, as I really felt as though I was in wartime Belgium while I was reading the book. She certainly put serious time and effort into the production of this book and it shows. I really appreciate that!
Laila Vidgis is the eldest of two daughters of a wealthy Belgian family. Her beautiful, younger sister, Sofia is selfish, mean-spirited, and evil, her mother is a cold, unfeeling, witch with a capital "B", and her father is a greedy, stupid idiot. With a family like that it's a miracle that Laila turned out so sweet, loving, and kind. Laila and the hero, Captain Rune Lambert met one day while they were both at the park. After spending hours flirting with Laila, Rune then asked permission to call on her. However, once he called at her house, Rune was then seemingly captivated by the beautiful Sofia. From then on, Rune would visit the Vidgis family home often, purportedly to court Sofia.
Rune is handsome, smart, loyal, ambitious, and a huge flirt. He enjoys spending time with women, and uses them to his advantage, mostly to advance his career. In reality, however, Rune does not trust women at all, not since he was so completely betrayed by his late wife. Rune recognizes Laila as threat to his bachelorhood, as she is unlike any other woman that he's ever met. Consequently, he keeps her at arms length, even while he can't seem to stay away from her.
When the story begins, Rune and Laila have already met and have a history together. Brussels has fallen to the enemy, and its residents are forced to make a mass exodus out of the city. Among those forced to flee are Laila and her family, as well as Rune and his comrades at arms. The story that unfolds encompasses a very sweet romance between Rune and Laila that is wracked with distrust and insecurity, as Laila believes that Rune is really in love with her beautiful, elegant sister, with whom she believes she cannot compare. Truthfully, Laila's has suffered years of belittlement and cruel insults at the hands of her mother, and to a lesser extent her sister, that she is left truly believe that she is lacking in all aspects.
As sweet as the relationship is between Laila and Rune, it wouldn't be a war story without some type of intrigue, and there is plenty involved in this plot. Laila's family becomes involved in treason, forcing Laila in the untenable position of having to prove her innocence. She is forced to work with the government to clear her name, and in the process save the lives of her unworthy family members. Rune, uncovering the treacherous plot, comes to the aid of his lady love, risking all, life, limb, and his beloved career, showing once and for all where his heart and loyalties really lie. Sigh!
I really enjoyed this book. As a matter of fact, I was surprised at how much I did enjoy it! It was a very pleasant surprise and reinforced my belief that I should take a jaunt outside of my comfort zone every once in a while. LOL The only issue I had with the story, is that I wish Laila's family had gotten their just deserts, or rather, I should say that I wish I had been there to witness it. I also wish that Laila would have been more assertive with her mother and sister. They were two viciously mean, condescending, evil witches, and I, for one, would have paid money to see them burned at the stake! LOL Anyhow, I really liked this book and would highly recommend it as a worthwhile read. If you usually enjoy this type of story, then you'll probably love this one, and if you don't, you'll probably enjoy it anyway. I did. FYI, this is clean romance! There are a few kisses, but nothing graphic, and no sex! Happy reading!

I received this book in the Goodreads Giveaway. While I was not impressed by the presentation of the story (the overall grammar and writing style) I did like the story line.
The story of a spy during the Great War and family betrayal was a little different for what I see of historical fiction about this time period. I enjoyed reading the spy plot within the novel exceeding more than the romantic aspect, which at times seemed forced or not all the way thought out.
