Letto in modo parziale selezionando dei capitoli ad hoc, seguendo la guida di Lars di Beijing Postcards per il club del libro. Un'incredibile testimonianza di Pechino dei primi anni del '900, uno studio delle statistiche della città che permette di capire gli strati sociali di cui era composta la capitale e di come la società non sia poi così cambiata e di quanto sia ciclica la storia.
