Eleven years after the collapse of 2027, the former United States is shell of its former glory. Four years of war with the Chinese have left the once great nation in shambles and dissolved the Pacific States of America, the last beacon of hope and the legacy of the its founder, Howard Beck. The only hope to restoring civilization rests in the hands of Richard Dupree and Maxwell Harris. The two men must overcome their differences and fight their way across a lawless and desolate land to face an adversary that will stop at nothing to rebuild society for his own evil gain.
Richard Stephenson was born in 1975 in Denison, TX and spent his childhood in North Texas. In 1992, he graduated high school after only three years. He then pursued his degree at Oklahoma Christian University, once again accomplishing the task in three years. Richard then married his best friend before going off to basic training to be a military policeman with the US Army. With his new wife joining the adventure, they spent the next four years at Fort Polk, LA and had two children.
Richard currently lives in Southeast Texas with his family where he is working something very top secret.
This actually would have been really good IF it had been included as the ending of book #2. As it is, I find this super short book to shamefully be nothing more than a way to rip readers off by turning one book into two purchases. Good luck trying to get your readers to buy the next book.
You can see from my ratings of the previous two books in this series that I enjoyed them more. I didn't not like Redemption but I found it was lacking compared to books 1 and 2. It felt like this was almost half of a book. I had my doubts about how this would pan out when I saw the page count was significantly shorter than before, but I thought it was just a shorter conclusion to a trilogy. Turns out that that wasn't the case. I am looking forward to the next book in the series, if there is to be a next book, but this one wasn't completely to my liking. I hope Stephenson kicks it up a notch next time. I know he has it in him.
The premise is there, somewhere. Parts of the book is great then it goes off on a tangent and I get lost then find out where I am. Not an enjoyable read. I doubt will read the the series.
This book was a page-turner just like the first two. A couple of wars have happened, and lots has changed, but survivors are slowly trying to rebuild their lives. I thought this was going to be the last book of the series, but it’s not. However, I’ve already checked three online book sellers, and there doesn’t appear to be any Book 4. So, instead of happily turning more pages for the end of the story, I’m left hanging and a bit frustrated.
I am confused, is that it? Is there another book? There must be another book. I thought this was a trilogy. If that was the last book of this series then I am greatly disappointed. I truly enjoyed the Fisher two books and was looking forward to some kind of hopeful finish. Disappointed...
This book leaves the reader feeling as hopeless as a refugee camp or a Russian mental hospital. Can't believe that the author would write such a depressing book to end the series.
Volume three--treading water waiting for the finale
So it turns out this is not a trilogy at all....there is a fourth volume to come. While the first two volumes were fast paced thrillers, the author slows this one down. It feels like a placeholder, setting up the grand finale fourth volume.
There are two techniques used by the author. First, in the end, very little actually happens. There is a huge battle, but it is largely fought "off stage" and controlled by robots. It's description takes less than 10 pages.
To disguise this lack of forward progress with the narrative, the author resorts to the time honored technique of playing with time. The book starts in the middle, jumps back, forward, then way back and almost catches up with where we started.
All of this makes the book entirely readable (but definitely do NOT start reading this one, without volumes one and two it will make no sense), but ultimately was a lot less satisfying than the much more straightforward narrative arc of the first two volumes.
One more note: the fourth volume is NOT yet released.
I somewhat enjoyed the third book of this trilogy until the cliff hanger at the end. It turns out that a fourth book -- Resurrection -- was to be released. After considerable time searching for this fourth book of a trilogy I've come to the conclusion that it was never written. For some unknown reason the author stiffed us.
went from poor to poorer. Said it was a three book series, yet, at the end of book three, said read book four for the conclusion! Can't find book 4!! Not sure I'd read it if I did find it!
Book three is full of intrigue and surprises, as we follow this post-apocalyptic story and the battles that must be fought and sacrifices must be made. Dilemmas and choices...what would we do?
A rich cast of characters set within great detail make for a compelling read.
It's difficult to say too much, as I don't give spoilers, but I will say that this well written saga is both thought provoking and clever because its harsh reality of what could be is scary, while its plot keeps you guessing.
It's hard to review a book without giving away any of the story. Followers of the Collapse books will enjoy this installment. Anxiously awaiting the next book but sad that it will most likely be the last one. Although I ended this book knowing where all the characters are.. I'm anxious to know what happens next.
Great installment of the New America series. Can't wait for part 4. Stephenson creates an interesting epic surrounding one of the best groups of characters I've followed to date. It might be a shorter story, but it definitely keeps you wanting more.
I have read the first two and really enjoyed them. This book was confusing in the beginning but then the author explains how the world was plunged into darkness and it all made sense.
Totally hated this book! Killing all of the characters to let God sort them out is a lazy way to conclude a story. The author will have to pull a miracle out of his backside to clean up this train wreck!
I love this series but I do agree this book did leave me panting for more. I'm so glad to see that there will be a 4th book. I am always the champion of good over evil.
