I waited until I finished the series to write a review, simply because I didn't want to speculate on what I did and didn't know, things that might come up in later books, that sort of thing.
So. Here we are. Book three. I have very very mixed feelings about this series. I enjoyed the story, somewhat. It was a great concept. BUT, the concept is only a concept. It's never really fleshed out. We get almost no world-building throughout. We get a couple of sentences about Elara's (The FMC) past. We get maybe one or two sentences about the four MMCs pasts. I don't know where the academy is, if the things it's doing are sanctioned by the government, or if there are any classes even. We see Elara in situations that someone sort of calls classes, but they're not. The school is a not-so-carefully disguised prison, I've got that. But, it's still a school.
On top of no background information, there's no middle information, either. The main characters don't have a full conversation about anything other than her extremely volatile powers, at all. Everything they talk about is in reference to the crises they are currently going through. There's one conversation in the second book (It's sort of reprised in the third book) about what they want after they have accomplished their goals that are going to almost certainly end in their deaths, but that's really about it.
Still, for a series that is basically: rising action, climax climax climax climax clli I I I I I I I I I I I imax, THE END, it was a fun read.
NOW, my biggest beef with this series - and this is a first for me - is the writing style. I very rarely address writing style because I am not infallible. I know this review has several mistakes and grammatical errors. Who am I to judge. Well, my problem isn't the grammar. It's the prose.
For some reason, this author has a tendency to speak almost constantly in metaphor and simile. Furthermore, she LOVES to use a negative metaphor followed immediately by a positive metaphor. For instance:
"Between them, I feel less like I'm drowning and more like I'm being held afloat."
"The void hum is constant now, not spiking but present, like tinnitus made of darkness."
"IT's not just a building. It's a &*^%( monument to control,"
"The mains stone is old. Not the clean, modern grey of new construction. This is ancient..."
"The Academy isn't just a prison. It's a graveyard pretending to be a school."
Friends and neighbors, all of these examples came from a span of about 8 pages in the third book. And, these are just the glaring ones. These books are full of "It didn't collapse, it disintegrated." "My walls didn't fall. They shattered."
The third book, in particular is SO jittery. It's a paragraph of forward motion, and then five or six sentences about the universe, world, and their position in it at large.
"As we descend, the air changes. It's not just cold; it's hollow. Every breath feels like I'm inhaling dust and old secrets. I can feel the bonds between us stretching, straining against the interference of the chamber. Lucien is a golden thread of Logic, Callum is a heavy anchor of iron, and Rys... Rhys is starting to bleed into the shadows around us until I can't tell where he ends and the tunnel begins." So, that entire paragraph taught us that the air is thick and dusty. Everything else is speculation about the group that has been repeated over and over.
It's all starts and stops. If the author just told the story without the 10,000 or so metaphors, the third book would be approximately 6 pages long. The story is a great concept, it really is. The execution is just a bit jarring.

Okay Conclusion, Still Liked 1st Book Better

Awakened Bonds, the third and final book in the series by Sable Wynn, was an enjoyable conclusion, but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. I gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars, rounded down to 3 stars.
My biggest issue with this book—and honestly, the series as a whole—was the amount of repetition. Many of the scenes felt redundant, and the same information was repeated multiple times throughout the story. Because of that, a lot of the emotional moments lost their impact. Instead of building tension or making the big moments hit harder, the repetition made them feel less meaningful.
That said, I still enjoyed the book overall. I was invested in the characters and wanted to see how everything wrapped up, and I thought it provided a satisfying conclusion to the series. While it wasn’t as strong as the first book for me, I still had a good time reading it.
Overall, this was a solid ending to the trilogy. I just think tighter editing and cutting back on the repetitive scenes would have made the story much more emotionally impactful.

I tried, I really did, but there is just so much destruction without explanation I can take. We were dropped into this world without any explanation in the "prequel" and very little worldbuilding was sdded in books 1 and 2. I do like the characterizations of Elara and her men, but there is nothing beyond what we're being given in the now. It was insta connection with every single bond mate and her roommate, Mara. Even the void (represented by Rhys) was an instant bond literally yanked into the relationship. I would have appreciated a richer back story to better understand the concept of this society, too many questions unanswered for me.

Boring
Lackluster conclusion. Repetitive conversations. No real explanation as to why this academy, and I guess a few others, were repressing people's powers. They bring down a system put in place a century before, but there's no explanation of why whoever built the academy feared supernaturals when they were probably one themselves. How is it that nobody saw a problem with the academy before now?
Overall, this book felt like filler material and was completely unnecessary. It dragged on with little to no new information. It was boring.

there were a lot of repetitive things and over explaining situations. I didn't enjoy this one as much as I thought I would. overall I give the trilogy 3 stars.

Good series
Was a really good series. Jax makes me laugh. Wish there was more Rhys but still was so good. Read every chance I had. Worth the read.
