Part love letter to New York and part love letter to his parents. I loved listening to Billy talk about his life and the entertainment world.

A memoir: yes! But as a middle aged Appalachian mom, I found this a wonderfully touching guide to parenting a creative child. Our son is a creative in a way that absolutely dominates how he sees and experiences the world. Hearing the level of Billy’s passions as a child was VERY familiar- except our son is wild about visual arts and storytelling. Moving mountains for experiences and resources is HARD where we live, but Debbie and Jay’s full support and participation that nurtured Billy’s world? I found that incredibly inspiring and reassuring for some of the sacrifices and decisions we have made to enrich and indulge our own son’s childhood. Hopefully they will be as meaningful for our guy in adulthood as Jay and Debbie’s were for Billy. Super super duper duper helpful to hear!!
Other than that: the book was super sweet, hilarious, and sometimes quite sad and heartbreaking. Somehow made NYC sound like a familiar hometown!?
And!! Joan Rivers! Ah. I need to revisit. And Madonna? Maybe I need to go back in that catalog and listen anew.

Billy Eichner had me ACTUALLY laughing out loud, he’s just so likable and listening to him talk about his parents warmed my heart. This was a really good memoir. Solid 4.5

4.4/5⭐️ I found myself much more blown away by this than I ever imagined and honestly, I was on the verge of tears a handful of times. While I was originally intrigued simply because I'm a fan of Billy on the Street, I finished this audiobook with the warmest, most endearing feelings for Billy Eichner. From his family to his showbiz tales, I was enamored.
What makes this project so special is that there’s no print version available anywhere. Because it exists strictly as an audiobook, you get to hear every ounce of raw emotion in his voice. I highly recommend this to anyone who is even remotely curious about him! Or maybe I'm just a sucker for author-narrated memoirs :,)

This audiobook is a masterpiece. I love that it was crafted as an audiobook instead of a celebrity memoir that also has an audio edition — I didn’t feel like I missed anything and including the clips (saving us a search!), capturing the raw emotion in his voice, and the way his father said certain phrases elevated the book exponentially.
Billy wants to be clear he isn’t “one of those helpful gays,” but also helps illustrate how the world would be transformed if every parent loved their child the way Debbie and Jay loved their son. They recognized Billy for who he was at a young age and never tried to soften or change him. It helped me reflect on the empathy I need to show for my boys and made me appreciate how even if no parent can be perfect, every parent has an obligation to do their very best.
The passionate way Billy loves his parents got me choked up at multiple points and, of course, he made me laugh throughout in the way only he can. His recall of obscure pop culture is a gift.

I really wanted to love this, but it needed a tad more structure. If you approach this as a stand-up special, you can sort of pretend it works, but if you approach this as a memoir, I can't completely say it works. There are some things I really enjoyed about listening to this, but a bit more linearity would have helped considering this is only an audiobook. At the end of this, Eichner claims that his parents were the stars of the memoir, but that statement felt a bit unearned due to the nonlinear narrative structure, I think.
By the end of this, I started reminiscing about my mother's influence on my own relationship to art. I gave it an extra star for that.

I have so much I want to say but am having a hard time putting my thoughts into words.
I was victim to thinking Billy on the Street was Billy Eichner's one lane especially when he went to Parks and Rec and now I feel like a dick for thinking that.
I love hearing his stories of growing up and his relationship with his parents. I smiled almost this whole book and LOLed numerous times.
I plan on watching Billy Eichner's whole filmography now (but Billy on the Street will always have a special place in my heart)
But also low-key what happened to aunt Joyce? I assume she died but I want dets

As a big fan of Billy Eichner, this audio book was a treat. I enjoyed hearing about his life growing up, as well as clips from Billy on the Street. It's probably the only audiobook I've ever listened to at normal speed.

i know he isn’t “for everybody” but i LOVE billy on the street. i still laugh just as hard seeing clips for the 10th time as i did when i saw them the 1st time. i loved hearing about billy eichner’s family, experience growing up, and journey in branching out of the billy on the street persona. i especially loved that they added clips of his work in the book. i laughed on many occasions (specifically the story of him as a kid watching a broadway show in the middle of summer where the AC was out and the lead having to wear a fur coat and pretend to freeze to death while dripping sweat) and cried as well. the way he speaks about his parents so highly was so touching, especially when you could hear him get choked up during certain stories about them. this book really felt like a love letter to them. ❤️

I liked Billy before this and really liked him afterward. I thought he was very open and honest. I laughed out loud at times and enjoyed the more sentimental parts. I did find it a bit repetitive and got a little bored with it, but maybe I'm just not a memoir girlie. I loved listening to Billy and hope he narrates more books in the future. It was a pleasant listen!

I’ve been a fan of Billy’s since Billy on the Street took NYC by storm. Living there at the time, I always hoped I’d run into Billy filming. I wanted to be asked something ridiculous about Meryl Streep for a dollar! I actually attended a screening of a few episodes at the Beacon years ago, and had so much fun. His brand of satire and overall ridiculousness while playing this character brings me such joy.
But what this memoir does is so much more than that. And what Billy does is so much more than his character of Billy on the Street. Billy’s stories of his childhood, being nurtured by his parents and his heroes who helped raise him - Madonna and Barbra Streisand, his teachers and impactful professor Mary Poole, and his struggles as an actor - strike a poignant chord with listeners.
There were a few moments where the book felt a little “name-droppy” and lost me a bit. But Billy always pulled me back in by discussing his family or his creative pursuits.
I also have to say, currently on Parks and Rec’s final season rewatch, and you can definitely see the change in Eichner’s portrayal of Craig between seasons 6 and 7, which he also discusses here.
I’d recommend listening if you love New York, like Billy and his work, or need to feel inspired in your everyday life. He reminds us of the importance of perseverance and being true to oneself. I’ll always be a fan of his work and look forward to what he does next!

Oh my god it is like a 10 hour how-to-guide on how to unconditionally, unapologetically, enthusiastically, borderline insanely, and perfectly show up and support the people you love. Especially your kids. Like what a gift for me as a mom to read this and take away so many important reminders and lessons on how you can truly create empowered, confident, and hilarious children just by letting them be themselves and rooting alongside of them.
I might have to re-listen because it is like a joy bomb right into your ear balls. I feel like this is for sure the first memoir I've ever read that was good because it was capturing such a wonderful life - in the like least annoying way. Usually there is a level of like shock and sensationalism that makes you want to keep reading about the unbelievable back story someone had - but Billy's story really is not about that. It's way more about him being him because of what amazing parents he had. And it is just an absolutely is a beautiful tribute that is his parents legit legacy.

Sighhhh...I don't WANT to mark that I've finished listening to this book. It's been my comfort listen since May 21st. Listening to bits and pieces with a smile on my face because Billy is just so well spoken and funny. He's also extremely kind and warm, that even just a little bit here and there would perk up my mood.
Billy writes beautifully about his relationship with his parents, Jay and Debbie. Especially about the tragedy that they didn't live long enough to see and join in on his success. Jay and Debbie sound like they were amazing parents for him. I'm sure not everything was wonderful, but in the end, he gets to look back on parents who loved him so much to provide the best life for them, and they did that with fanfare and pizzazz!
When he spoke about his father's death, it struck a major chord with me, and I was left sobbing so much that my husband reached out to see if I was okay. I spent the next few minutes explaining what was happening through tears and hiccups! It still makes me tear up as I write this.
I wish, wish, wish that this audiobook gets a physical print at some point in the future. This is one of those memoirs I would pick up and read again (and I never re-read or re-listen to memoirs!). Billy could write an update! Go on another book tour! Make it a big deal! I'd be first in line.

I think it's important that I note my only exposure to Billy Eichner has been one viewing of Bros, which I liked, and his role on Parks and Recreation, which I don't remember super fondly. I still LOVED this audiobook. It's a beautiful love letter to his parents and to popular entertainment. It really, really moved me. He made me laugh several times but there's a lot of poignancy, too. I found him surprisingly relatable, particularly his obsession with popular culture and theatre and his very close relationship with his parents, both of whom are deceased. He talks about the industry in this, but it's pretty clear he's written it as a testament to his mom and dad, and it's really special.

Full disclosure: I do not like audiobooks. I always prefer reading to listening, but since this was only released as audio and I love both Billy Eichner and his Billy on the Street character, I listened to all 12 hours. I can't say I didn't miss bits here and there, but this was a great memoir! It's a touching and funny love story to his supportive parents, growing up in New York City, and show business.

I loved this. This book resonated with me as an only child raised by a fabulous a single parent in the 80s, who also loved Barbara Streisand, Bette Midler, late night tv, talk shows, etc. I didn’t anticipate sobbing at the end, relating to the feeling of achieving success without having the person/people who got there to share it with. My only complaint is that I wanted more about his Difficult People experience. 10/10 Recommend.

Perhaps I rounded up my rating as a small thank you for the boundless joy that rewatching clips of Billy on the Street still brings me^, but this audiobook, ostensibly a showbiz memoir, is such a sweet love letter to Eichner’s mom and dad that I heartily recommend it to anyone who is a parent, a Gen X pop culture obsessive, or lover of New York.

Billy Eichner never fails to put a smile on my face, but I wasn’t expecting him to put tears in my eyes. I had something really nice written after that about Billy and his parents, but Goodreads sucks and didn’t save my draft and I can’t remember what all I wrote!
I love Billy even more now than I ever thought I could. Gold stars all around! 5/5⭐️

Billy Eichner posed the question - what kind of kid grows up to become Billy on the Street? Apparently it’s a kid who grew up with parents who always encouraged his interests no matter how niche, instilled a love of theatre and comedy, and had New York City as his playground. This was such a delight to listen to!

Billy on the Street made me LAUGH back in the day. It was nice to hear his life story and his loving tribute to his parents who supported him throughout. I laughed and got teary a couple times. I realize he's not everyone's cup of tea, but grateful for anyone who can make me laugh.
