He’s the Ghost of Hollow Peak. She’s the twin of the man who died under his command. She came for answers. He came undone.
When war correspondent Sloane Hale arrives in Hollow Peak, she has one confront the reclusive ex-Marine who survived the ambush that killed her twin brother, Phoenix, and expose the truth he’s been hiding.
But Rhys Ward isn’t the monster she expected. He’s haunted. Controlled. Living like a ghost in the mountains above town. And when their worlds collide, it’s fire meeting steel.
Every question she asks slices open a wound he’s spent years burying. Every answer he gives threatens everything she thought she knew. And every moment between them pulls her deeper into the one place she swore she’d never his arms.
But the truth is a battlefield of its own. And some ghosts only rise when both halves of a story finally meet.
Ghost of Hollow Peak is a steamy, emotionally charged enemies-to-lovers romance featuring a morally grey, haunted mountain man, a justice-driven heroine, revenge-to-love tension, forced proximity, and a slow-burn connection that turns explosive. Set in the rugged mountains of Colorado, it’s part of the Hollow Peak Mountain Men series and can be read as a standalone. Happily-ever-after guaranteed. No cliffhangers.

I usually don’t like shorter books because they feel so rushed and it doesn’t feel like the book is taking you on a journey. This isn’t that. This book is perfection. Nothing was compromised.
The relationship building was beautiful. It flowed so well. I loved Sloanes persistence. I loved Rhys venerability. I loved the emotion this book gave.
Ghost of Hollow Peak by Engrid Eaves is not a light read—and it’s not meant to be. This story is raw, intense, emotionally heavy, and deeply consuming. It’s the kind of romance that digs into grief, guilt, and truth, and then asks what happens when love grows in the middle of all that wreckage.
Sloane Hale arrives in Hollow Peak with one purpose: answers. As a war correspondent—and the twin sister of a soldier who never came home—she is determined to confront the man who led her brother’s final mission. She’s not there for closure. She’s there for truth, even if it destroys everything.
And Rhys Ward? He’s already destroyed.
Living alone in a bare, isolated mountain cabin, Rhys has turned himself into exactly what the town calls him—a ghost. A man haunted by a mission gone wrong, carrying guilt that has shaped every second of his life since. From the moment Sloane shows up, you can feel the tension snap tight between them. She sees a man she believes is responsible. He sees the eyes of the man he couldn’t save staring back at him.
What follows is not a simple enemies-to-lovers story. It’s a slow, painful unraveling.
Sloane pushes. Rhys resists. She demands answers. He tries to protect her—from the truth, from the past, and maybe even from himself. But this book doesn’t deal in easy answers. It asks a harder question: what is truth, really? Is it one version? Or many fractured pieces depending on who survived to tell it?
That emotional tension is what makes this story so powerful. Every conversation feels like walking into a battlefield. Every revelation cuts deeper than the last. And watching Sloane slowly shift from anger to understanding—while Rhys struggles under the weight of his guilt—was absolutely gripping.
The romance builds in the middle of that storm, and it’s anything but easy. Rhys doesn’t believe he deserves anything good, especially not someone like Sloane. And Sloane has every reason not to trust him. But somewhere between the confrontation and the quiet moments, something real begins to take shape. Something fragile. Something hard-earned.
Their chemistry is intense, but it’s layered with pain, conflict, and emotional vulnerability. This isn’t just attraction—it’s two broken people trying to make sense of something that shouldn’t feel right… but does.
I also appreciated that the mystery doesn’t wrap itself up neatly. The truth, when it comes, isn’t simple or clean. It’s messy, complicated, and deeply human—just like the characters themselves. And while the emotional journey is brutal at times, the ending offers something meaningful: not perfection, not complete healing, but a choice. A future. A place where both of them can finally stop running.
If you love emotionally heavy romance, morally gray heroes, enemies-to-lovers tension, and stories that explore grief, truth, and redemption without taking the easy way out, Ghost of Hollow Peak is absolutely worth reading. Just be prepared—this one doesn’t just tug at your heart… it storms through it and leaves something lasting behind.

Sloane has a very specific goal in going to Hollow Peak—she’s going to find out the truth about her brother’s death, by getting the true story from his Marine team leader, Rhys. But what is truth, really? Is it something that is universal, or does it change depending on who is telling the story?
Rhys lives in complete solitude. One room cabin, very few amenities. (Dude, put in a shower or a tub. Seriously.) Whatever he’s escaping, Sloane is going to uncover it, as she’s so certain that he’s responsible for her twin brother Phoenix’s death.
It takes a while for Sloane to get anything out of Rhys, other than that she and Phoenix have the same eyes, and that seems to unnerve him a bit. Can’t say that I blame him. The accepted story, the one that has been filed, is not the whole story, and it may be that even Rhys doesn’t have all of the pieces.
Of course Rhys is attracted Sloane, which is hard on him, because she’s already decided that he’s the bad guy. And he feels like the bad guy, because he interrupted something that apparently he shouldn’t have, on the mission where everything went wrong.
This book is tense. And it might be triggering for some, so please read the trigger warnings before beginning the story.
During their time together, Sloane begins to fall for Rhys, even though his guilt is pushing them apart. There’s definitely a mystery here, but unlike most mystery books, this one doesn’t have a tidy conclusion. At least Rhys and Sloan choose a happy ending, finding their true homes in each other, and that is a beautiful thing.
3.7 rating. I enjoyed it but it was a bit repetitive.
I'm a fan of E.Eaves. I think this is the 10th book I've read by them. Where I think some of the others have been better, this was definitely consistent with their writing.
Sloane, a war correspondent/ journalist and the twin of a soldier lost in action, is seeking answers the office report of her brothers death doesn't provide... She finds Rhys in self exile at the top of Hollow Peak. Sometimes the journey for the truth is not what you expect, nor is the truth always one you can accept. Often it's just another thing you have to learn to live with.
Though I do feel they had chemistry, this almost felt like a trauma bond; not that that is a bad thing, it just makes space for kindred spirits to find each other.
The characters and plot aside, I thought some of the back and forth of him trying to protect her and the version of her brother she thought she knew was a bit repetitive. I think exchanging some of those moments for more of them growing together might have landed better for me.
But solid powerful read, nevertheless.

Sloane is trying to figure out what happened to her twin brother who lost his life overseas. She is determined to go to Hollow Peak and seek out the one person that can hopefully give her answers. But will Rhys be able to give her the truth she is looking for? Rhys is ex-military reclusive mountain man surviving with PTSD just trying to protect his man and their memory. Until Sloane walks into his life and pokes the past and what he is trying to hide. These two end up on quite the emotional journey to the truth about what happened and how to come to terms with it and start living their lives. Will Sloane be able to help Rhys overcome his hiding away in the mountain? Will learning the truth destroy everything she thought she knew. This was a short quick read but one amazing storyline with two characters that were well written and completely drew you in with their story. I absolutely love Engrid Eaves stories and highly recommend this one. Part of the Hollow Peak Mountain man series.

But sometimes the answers only create more questions.
Sometimes they destroy everything you thought you knew.
And sometimes they shine a light on a truth you cannot believe.
Rhys has done everything he can to protect his men, protect the memory of them, but Sloane is not prepared to accept the mission version he has given. She pokes, prods, demands and pleads until he cannot deny her anymore, he begs her to accept his version, to allow the memory of her brother to remain, but he cannot refuse her pleas. An emotional storm, this is a brutal journey for Rhys and Sloane, they do find a HEA, but it has a cost. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.

Sloan, a war correspondent, goes in search of answers for what happened to her brother. She is not prepared for finding Rhys, and how he is not what she expected and what he reveals is definitely not what thought the story world be. Being trapped in a cabin in the mountains she slowly learns that Rhys is troubled and hurting from what happened. She unraveles the truth and looses her heart in the process. A touching story with a happy ending.
Hollow Peak Mountain Men story of Rhys Ward and Sloane Hale. Now that one had me thinking about what is the truth and how it will change your life. I have to say the way Sloane meets Rhys was like fate coming to help these two out. The emotional connection they have made me want to hug both these characters.

She came for answers, sure if she dug enough she’d find truth. He knows things he shouldn’t share, but she needs truth. Intense, traumatic, violent storms and an unavoidable connection. The ending is very satisfying and honest.
