She defeated the Dark Lord. She conquered the Shadow Realm. Now, she just wants to deduct her cauldron as a business expense.
Elara Vance is retired. Technically, she’s the legendary Sun-Breaker who saved the realm from eternal darkness. But on her tax return, she’s just a humble baker running The Toasted Toad in the rainy village of Moonbright.
Her goals are Bake excellent cinnamon rolls, pet her chaotic dungeon mimic, Barnaby, and avoid ever picking up a sword again.
Her A little light tax fraud. (Okay, a lot of tax fraud. Dragon scale flour is expensive, and she didn't exactly get a receipt when she looted it.)
Enter Crispin Thorne.
He is the Royal Auditor. He has a jawline sharp enough to cut glass, a heart made of spreadsheets, and a suspicion that Elara’s profit margins are statistically impossible. He hasn't come to Moonbright to buy a scone; he’s come to audit her existence.
But when the Mayor’s prize-winning magical pumpkin is stolen days before the Harvest Festival, the Baker and the Auditor are forced into an unlikely alliance.
To save her town (and keep her secrets buried), Elara must team up with the one man who can destroy her. But as they chase demons through the woods and break into manor houses, Elara realizes that the only thing more dangerous than being exposed as a high-level mage is falling for the man sent to arrest her.
Can she balance the books, catch the thief, and save the festival before Crispin figures out that her "organic sawdust" is actually sleeping powder?

This was a cute read about a baker (with magic) and. Tax auditor out to save the day and Bertha (the prize winning pumpkin). It was a fun short read. Looking forward to reading book number 2
Where has this author been hiding?? I don't know if this is a debut or an established author writing under a pen-name but the quality of the work is truly phenomenal.
This 90 page gem is a fast paced, brilliantly crafted cosy with mystery, magic and a lovely opposites-attract romance arc.
I loved Elara, the FMC. Her history sounds like an epic fantasy of dragons, battles and spells, and her present, a sea-change with pastries. Crispin, the MMC/Royal Tax Auditor, is wonderfully acerbic but with a soft centre and impressive forensic accounting skills, which he wields at tax evaders' peril. Their banter is full of dry humour and pithy one liners that held me entranced. And my new favourite side-kick is a Mimic called Barnaby.
This really is a book to be reread and enjoyed more each time. Book 2 is in my library (and was fr33 when I bought it) and I am itching to get to it - there is a dragon wanting back rent!

The baker, a retired hero under covet gets audited. Horror of horrors. Will the auditor find her secrets. Will he try and arrest her. A wonderful and hilarious book.
