Ruin Me Softly
Eden Whitmore was the perfect wife.
Polished. Composed. Silent.
From the outside, her life beside one of the most powerful men in the country looked untouchable—private planes, donor galas, admiration that followed them into every room. Behind closed doors, it was something else entirely. Control disguised as devotion. Violence hidden beneath tailored suits and carefully curated smiles. A marriage that functioned as a cage.
So Eden did the unthinkable.
She ran.
In a small town where no one knew her name—or her past—she rebuilt herself as Eliza Moore. She found work, community, and something she thought she’d lost forever: the right to exist without permission. She learned what it felt like to be seen without being owned. To be loved without conditions.
But monsters don’t release what they believe belongs to them.
When the man she escaped finally finds her, Eliza makes a choice that will change everything. Instead of running again, she walks back into the heart of his world—armed with the truth, a meticulously kept record of his crimes, and a plan that could bring down a powerful trafficking ring built on silence and fear.
What follows is a reckoning.
A violent, devastating collision between survival and justice. Between love that protects and power that destroys. Between who she was forced to be—and who she chose to become.
Ruin Me Softly is a harrowing, emotionally charged novel about coercive control, resilience, and the cost of telling the truth. It is a story of a woman who refuses to disappear quietly—and the people willing to stand beside her, even when the price is everything.
Because sometimes survival isn’t the end of the story.
Sometimes it’s just the beginning.

Ruin Me Softly by A.L. Wilder absolutely wrecked me in the best possible way.
This isn't just a romance. It's a story about survival, reclaiming your voice, and learning that healing doesn't mean forgetting what happened to you. It means refusing to let it define the rest of your life.
Eden Whitmore appears to have the perfect life from the outside, married to a powerful man with wealth, influence, and status. But behind closed doors, she's trapped in a world of coercive control, fear, and abuse. When she finally escapes and rebuilds her life as Eliza Moore, watching her slowly rediscover herself was both heartbreaking and inspiring. When her past catches up with her, she faces an impossible choice: run again or fight back. What follows is an emotional journey filled with courage, resilience, and a determination to expose the truth no matter the cost.
As a survivor myself, this book hit hard. Wilder captures so many of the realities that survivors understand, the constant fear, the second-guessing, the struggle to trust, and the difficult process of learning what healthy love and safety actually look like. There were moments that made my chest ache because they felt so real.
What I appreciated most was that Eden's story wasn't about being rescued. It was about finding her own strength. The people around her supported her, loved her, and stood beside her, but she was the one who chose to fight for herself. That distinction matters, and Wilder handled it beautifully.
The romance is powerful, but for me, the heart of this book was watching a woman reclaim her identity after years of being told who she was allowed to be. The emotional depth, the healing, the justice, and the hope woven throughout the story made this one unforgettable.
If you enjoy emotional romances that tackle difficult subjects with honesty, compassion, and heart, Ruin Me Softly is a must-read. Just be prepared it will break your heart before it helps put the pieces back together.

One thing I love about A.L. Wilder’s writing is the unique feel. The format and writing style are like inhaling my favorite poetry, and honestly, the emotional impact cuts deeply in that same manner. Her stories are written in a way only someone who has experienced this kind of pain can write.
“She learned to exist in a room without bracing for impact.”
Although mine and Eden’s stories are not the same, this one line hit me so hard I read it multiple times. Shed tears. Marked it to come back to. The kind of abuse may be different, but the scars on the souls of all survivors deserve healing. And that line? God. It took me back to the moments when bracing for impact was second nature and reminded me of how far I’ve come. What I’ve healed. I needed that.
Ruin Me Softly is a story of survival. It’s not a cozy romance or a heartwarming love story. This is one woman who endured, survived, and discovered how to live again after abuse.
If you’re looking for something different that holds healing and survival, you need to read this.

What an emotional, powerful, fictional story that unfortunately happens in real life for real people.
Definitely check your triggers if you've been in an abusive relationship, though, I think the way this story is written it could be very healing and inspiring.
The writing is raw, beautiful, and well-paced. I was able to connect with the FMC in a way that not everyone may be able to if you've never experienced a toxic, controlling relationship.
This story focuses on transitioning from a survivor to someone reclaiming their identity.
Favorite quotes:
"...love doesn't come with conditions, or punishment, or fear. ...it can be soft and steady and still strong."
"Love shouldn't make you afraid."

As someone who has been an “Eden” I understand the hardship she went through. I recognize the signs now of all the red flags and the things that slowly allowed myself to be isolated and led down a path of no return. I also know first hand what it’s like for the abuser to get away with what they did. In a world where money speaks and the victims are silenced it’s far too often. Even when the abuser was estranged from their rich family . But one call and they are like new again blaming the victim for the assault. If you are an Eden if you need someone to talk too. My inbox is always open. You are stronger than you know love, take that first step. I promise you it’s Infinitely better on the other side. I also know what it’s like to break down walls and allow oneself to be loved. But to this day I still question people a motivates and intents. I still get heart palpitations just driving by where I used to live. I still avoid that entire area if i can.

This one has ALL THE EMOTIONS. I haven’t cried during a book in a long time and not because of anything that happens, but because when the book is over… you’re asking why? How? Whom? And I’m a sucker for brothers. Lastly, the words were just put together so well. Just how poetic, desperate, hopeful each passage was, probably one of the most beautifully written books I’ve ever read.

I bought the book simply because the cover is filled with my favorite flower. I didn’t read the back, or the authors note until days later. Immediately I was hooked. As a survivor of DV, this book was everything it needed to be. It was beautiful, hard, encouraging and heartbreaking.
This was my first read by A.L. Wilder & I will be back.
(Also noting, I didn’t even know that I bought a signed copy and bookmark at our new bookstore in town, love it!)

Some books entertain you, and some books hit a little deeper. Ruin Me Softly was one of those for me.
The story follows a woman trying to move forward after heartbreak, only to find herself pulled into a manipulative and controlling relationship. Watching her slowly realize what she’s trapped in and find the courage to run and reclaim herself felt incredibly raw and real.
What resonated with me most was how honestly the book captures that confusing space between love, devotion, and control. Sometimes you don’t realize how deep you are in something until you’re already struggling to breathe inside it.
A. L. Wilder has a way of writing emotions that feel genuine instead of dramatized. The character’s internal battles, the fear of being found, the complicated feelings that come with trying to escape someone who once meant everything all felt incredibly authentic.
This book didn’t just tell a story. It made me feel understood in a way I didn’t expect when I picked it up.

ARC review: 4.5⭐️
I loved this book. It had me going through all of the emotions. I just want to give Eliza a hug and tell her how proud I am of her. It truly breaks my heart that woman go through this ALL THE TIME.
The one thing that I struggled with during this book was the constant use of this sentence format.
For example:
“Not safety.” “Space.”
“Not protection.” “Position.”
“Not relief.” “Pride”
“Not tentative. Not intrusive. Just present.”
“Not pleading. Not hopeful. Wary.”
“Not accidental, not rushed. Just there.”
“Not with love. Not with rage. With calculation.”
Repetitive words like easy, unforced, simple, steady, and real.
Overall I enjoyed this book a lot. A.L Wilder knows trauma and she knows how to give the reader a feel for what Eliza was going throug. I loved getting to know Eliza and her story so thank you for this ARC☺️

Ruin Me Softly - A.L Wilder
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Can a single decision change the course of a life forever? This novel suggests the answer is a resounding ‘YES’.
I feel like I really connected to Eliza in ways I didn’t know I would. Her story was so empowering. She never backed down even when everything was telling her too.
Luke’s letter to Eliza had me in tears… I truly was not expecting that but honestly I knew if anyone- he would be the one too.
I got the privilege to get an ARC read from A.L Wilder, this book is different from anything she has wrote before but I feel like she just found another genre and she absolutely nailed it ☺️

I love A.L. Wilder as both an author and a person. She has taken this book and made it into something beautiful! We follow FMC Eden through a devastating break up, a horrid marriage, her finding herself again, and finally getting revenge and having her HEA.
The author does an amazing job at slowly introducing us to the bad guy, Daniel, and keeping us on our toes until his true colors show.
This book is not a cut and dry romance book. We get to dig deeper into a community that Eden builds to help her get her revenge. All I can say now is READ THE BOOK.

My local bookstore was having a book signing so I decided to walk in. To my surprise it was A.L. Wilder! I was so excited because I follow her on Tik Tok and I was very interested in her books. I decided to buy this one (she signed it and my book mark too) and I was sucked in from the first chapter on. Eden/Eliza was so strong and incredibly brave and thank goodness for the HEA because I was getting a bit worried towards the end that she was going to be "ruined" again. Thank you A.L. for such a beautiful book that shows courage, and resilience and of course love.

This book creeps in slowly and settles in to your bones like the abuser to the abused. It shows the horrible circumstances in a way that is respectful and minimized the gorey details but you still know what happends. A L Wilder is an incredible writer that has a knack for writing in tension and leading you down an emotional path that keeps you on the edge of your seat unaware of whats going to happen next. Recommend whole heartedly.

I really loved this book!! I kept waiting for the bad news to come because, like my life, it was too good to be true for awhile! I really found myself pulling for the main character to make it thru this book and find her happily ever after!
