This book contains scenes of explicit violence and gore.
Homo sapiens are among the most intelligent creatures to have ever graced the face of this planet we call home. Their advancements in the fields of science and technology have allowed them to live out their wildest dreams.
But what if those dreams turned out to be nightmares?
This collection of technological nightmares contains the stories "Salvage", "Unalived", "Bonemeal", "Orbital Boner", "By The Horns", "Filter", "Head" and "A Private Show".
Harrison Phillips is an English author of horror, sci-fi and fantasy. His literary influences range from Clive Barker and Stephen King, to Jack Ketchum and Edward Lee. He was born and raised in Birmingham, England, where he still resides with his long-suffering wife, their two daughters, and a schnauzer named Minnie.
Firstly I want to say a big thank you again to Harrison for surprising me with this, I am still so grateful to you for that. Secondly, this was an incredible collection of short stories!! Every single one was just unreal!! This is 8 separate sci-fi horror short stories that have featured in multiple anthologies & have been self published by Harrison 🤌🏼
Salvage, this was a great kick starter! It gave me monster house vibes, which is one of my daughter’s fav films that we watch all the time. But it was obviously more ramped up in the horror scale! I’d love a novella on Mr Chorley please 🙏🏼
Unalived- this one got me! I dislike the thought of those simulator games anyway but this seems like it could be all too real with the dark web & it actually terrified me!! 🫣
Bonemeal- erm this was a creepy AF neighbourhood where they “feed the lawn” bones at night…it creeped me out!!😨
Orbital Boner- the art of skull f’ing 🫣with a demonstration 👀 I actually really enjoyed this one 😂 I also thought about it for days after!
By The Horns- A mechanical bull, that has a mind of its own! Yeaah, no, I will not be riding no bull in the near future 😱
Filter- 😬 An app that blurs your imperfections & turns you into their idea of beautiful in real life 🫣 I am a filter lover, not a change myself filter but a get rid of the tired eyes kind & this freaked me out! I hope it never becomes a reality 😭🤣
Head- This one reminded me of that scene in Return To Oz, with the head swapping but obviously a lot more extreme 😳😅
A Private Show- Cam girls will go that far for money!! It’s crazy because these things happen! I say this all the time but when it is so close to real life that’s when it’s the most scary!
Wow, honestly I’m a little sad that I’ve finished this now 😭 I could not tear myself away from it every single story was just brilliant!
My favs were definitely Unalived, Head & Orbital Boner, I thought about those ones the most but they would all get the full ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me! I genuinely loved them all!
Salvage Mr Chorley’s past is the stuff of folklore, handed down from kid to kid. A tale of how he became mad!
Unalived JackSPLAT wants to be a successful gamer. In a desperate bid to become a somebody he searches for a banned game m*rder simulator. I loved the premise of this one! Such a fab concept!
Bonemeal Jennifer and Rob are living the good life. Rob watches his neighbour sprinkling something on her lawn overnight. Because you MUST remember to feed it… I loved this one!
Orbital Boner Have you ever really taken a deep dive into the average size of eye sockets? No neither had i…. But the professor, well, he has! I found this one really funny especially the ending!
By The Horns The bucking bronco was a good idea at the time! The ending of this one oh my days I didn’t see that coming! Some delicious body horror in this one.
Filter Mia’s a pretty girl though she doesn’t much see it herself. I loved this story. I loved the plot and haven’t read anything quite like it! There were elements giving me a little bit of Stephen kings fairytale vibes. What do you see when you look in the mirror?
Head A kidnapping. Dr Williamsons a surgeon. But that’s not all he is… how far would you go to save the life of a loved one? I absolutely loved this one.
A Private Show A request goes too far. But it’s all worth it in the end. I loved this one, rich and fast paced.
This anthology is a simply brilliant collection of shorts. I enjoyed each and every one of these stories. I think Orbital Boner and Filter are my favourites from this collection. Plenty of delicious body horror. This one is an easy 5 star for me!
Salvage: Technological Nightmares by Harrison Phillips isn’t just sci-fi horror it’s what happens when technology stops serving humanity and starts harvesting it. This book feels like: • rusted wires sparking in the dark • corrupted files screaming through old speakers • machines learning how to hate Every story reads like a transmission intercepted from a dying world. Phillips doesn’t give you clean, shiny cyberpunk. He gives you dirty tech. Broken implants. Flesh fused with metal. Memory rot. Corporate experiments that should’ve stayed buried. The horror isn’t jump scares. It’s inevitability. It’s realizing:the scariest monster isn’t AI… it’s what humans build when they stop caring who gets crushed. The prose is sharp, mechanical, and means like a buzzsaw cutting through bone. Each nightmare feels fast, brutal, and personal. No filler. No mercy. If you love: • Black Mirror • Love, Death + Robots • Dead Space • Cyberpunk 2077’s darker side • Analog horror & glitch aesthetics • Short stories that punch you in the throat
This book will absolutely fry your nervous system.
By the end I felt like I needed to unplug my router and sit in silence.
Salvage: Technological Nightmares delivers eight short stories that bring a bit of everything to the table and keep you engaged from beginning to end. Expect body horror, the supernatural, media, beauty culture, some truly awful neighbours, and disturbing experiments. Add in plenty of gory, creepy moments, along with a few that did make me laugh, and it’s no surprise this book has become one of my favourite short story collections.
All stories pack a punch and I cannot tell you which one I enjoyed the most… because they’re all bloody brilliant! So I urge you to pick it up and decide for yourself.
