Running blindly through deep, dark woods, Callie Ireson thinks she's finally escaped her abductor and his cabin from hell. Reaching the highway, she flags down a passing truck driver, but things don't go as they should, and her torment is far from over. In reality, her torment is just beginning.

Dredged up from the sewage system below an abandoned research facility, a creature discovers a larger world, one full of scents, sensations, and the perfect location for a nest. All the movement and procreation requires fuel...and nothing satisfies like the taste of human flesh.

Callie has survived so much already; does she have the strength to survive her nastiest obstacle yet? Will she be just another item on the creature's insatiable menu? Will her torture, pain, and struggle be worth it? Will she ever get free?

Get Free’ from Mark Robinson is a killer worm creature feature that is much more than the sum of its parts (or should that be segments).

With an opening reminiscent of a backwoods slasher, author Robinson lulls us into a false sense of security, and when the first death occurs, he merely hints at the true horror that is to come.

Utilising a multiple POV approach, we follow our final girl, an off-duty nurse and a couple of cops as they piece together what happened in the abandoned shack in the woods, and how a truck driver ended up with a giant hole in the middle of his body.

The story moves quickly, and with some neat literary devices employed, but for me the highlight is how Robinson not only handles the worms, teasing us until near the end of the story before we really know what we are dealing with, but flips it so our protagonists and us have to deal with the parasitic effects of it first. This aspect reminded me of a cross between something like The Void and Slugs. Wonderful idea.

For me, the beauty of ‘Get Free’ is the anticipation that builds until a very satisfying climax, and is a mandatory read for fans of creature feature horror. In fact, any eighties style horror should check it out.

However, I would note that there were elements I felt an editor should have picked up on, and while it doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of the book, it did sometimes pull me out of the immersive atmosphere created by the author.

I tucked into this one on release day and had it was a wild ride. The story is a fast-paced creature feature and the characters are on the run pretty much the entire time. I appreciated the amount of character development Robinson accomplished in a short novella. Impressive work.

Check this one out. It's a lot of wiggly squirming fun.

I love a good creature feature and this one absolutely delivers, as a final girl escapes the clutches of a serial killer only to find herself navigating a more terrifying nightmare!

“Get Free (Rewind or Die Book 40)” by Mark Robinson

Right from the first page, the intensity is in your face and keeps that pace throughout the book. A young woman (Callie), hands tied, is running as fast as she can away from a secluded cabin. She reaches the road and flags down a tanker truck. The driver offers help, but *something* busts out of the tank itself. The driver shouldn’t have got out to investigate. He ends up laying on the road dead & gored by a mutant sewer worm. And that’s just the beginning.

The scenes of the recently gored victims becoming “incubators” for mutant worms…the descriptions of seeing them wriggling under the skin. The hospital elevator scene with the Queen worm stuck in the door chomping at the riders…and its demise. They all both gave me chills and made me nauseous. I loved it!

This book absolutely reminded me of the classic “creature features” and slasher books/films from the 80’s. Very well done! Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy to read/review!

Get Free starts off on a surge of adrenaline that never lets up til the very end. Jam packed with action and horror…this creature feature is giving Anaconda…but on steroids👀🐍😱😳

Callie escapes her abductor from the cabin in the woods and is running for her life. Along the way she encounters a rather slimy and large creature with razor sharp teeth, that’s blood thirsty. 🩸🪱

For as short of a story as this was…it sure hit every mark. Very well-written, perfectly paced, engaging characters and never a dull moment had in this story. I was on the edge of my seat up until the very last page!

Thank you, Mark, for allowing me to read this early! I very much enjoyed it and can’t wait for the rest of the world to read this terrifying creature-feature tale of horror.

Such a fun, fast paced creature feature. It is able to build great characters even with its short length. Taking place over one night, the pace is all go from the first page and never lets up right to the end.

Get Free has the pace of a found footage action-horror movie. It's clear Robinson had fun throwing set-piece after set-piece at the reader to build a fun creature feature. His Final Girl drags us through the narrative without a moment to spare. A quick read to refresh your pallet.

Action packed novella, I’m usually a bit disappointed by shorter books but this was the perfect length. I’ve not read anything like this in years it was a welcome change.

This is an excellent little novella. It reminds me of Herbert and Hutson with their rats and slugs books respectively. Mark Robinson has definitely brought back monster horror. Definitely a must read for all eighties horror fans.

I love a good Creature Feature and Mark Robinson's Get Free is about as good a trip back to the rubber-monster filled 1980s as I could ask for.

A young woman fleeing a very human monster runs into a very INhuman one as she takes refuge at a small hospital on one dark night. Every time she believes she has escaped one danger, she finds herself in another, as these monstrous little worms begin devouring everyone around her!

A lot of modern monster stories get hung up on endless descriptions of violence and carnage, forgetting we need to care about the characters if we don't want to see them become worm chow. Fortunately, that is not an issue for author Mark Robinson, as he sets up likable, interesting characters at a very rapid clip.

Callie makes for a compelling heroine, as does Grace, the nurse who just happens to come across her that night. The two police characters, Cross and Andersen, are also good and provide a different take on the story, filling in some of the hinted at background to these critters, and the POV switches between all four of them with each mini-chapter of this novella, which helped keep the pace racing!

Plenty of intense scenes, especially near the climax, where our heroines get stranded in one bad spot after another, and the nasty little squirming worms get nearer and nearer.

The only downside is that thanks to the story's brevity, we get a few scenes that feel a tad rushed or under-written, leaving me a little confused as to the placement of characters and items in the world. But I'd take a story this tight and respectful of its readers time than a bloated, endless slog every day of the week!

This is a fun, thrilling ride without the meanness that pervades some of its ilk, and if you want a throwback to a 1980s monster flick, I think Get Free will satisfy for an afternoon of gasps and page-turning excitement.

A fantastic blend of horror, action, mystery, stalk-and-slash terror, and creature feature bloodletting. Get Free has a pulse that starts hard and builds from there. Robinson tells the tale with the adrenaline of a man peeling skin back to the red.

ALL I can honestly say is OMFG! Do you know when you talk about a book that you want to read that makes you breathe faster, bite your nails, and get that rollercoaster stomach drop feeling? This, this is that book! When the reviews say "creature-feature"," old school horror" or "stalk and slash terror" I can't even explain any better than that description. This is a pulse-pounding page-turning horror and it starts from the first line!
You are in for a big surprise when you read this, I cannot wait to dive into more of Mark Robinson's books. I am now a forever fan!
