Red Zone Heat

Rate this book
When the game ends, the real play begins…

In the high-stakes world of professional football, rookie quarterback Nico Fallon is a rising star with everything to prove. Drafted to fill the shoes of a legend, he’s brash, cocky, and desperate for validation, chasing a dream that might not even be his own. But when his new coach turns out to be the retired icon Cooper Callahan, the tension surges into the red zone—dangerous, unstoppable, and impossible to call back.

The stoic, unbreakable coach pushes Nico harder than anyone ever has. On the field, the tutelage pays dividends. Off the field, charged glances and heated proximity ignite something forbidden beneath a carefully crafted facade. Every command, every “good boy,” pulls Nico deeper into stolen moments and risky encounters.

Cooper returned to the game to coach, not to relive his ghosts, and absolutely not to want the infuriating rookie who's everything he shouldn't desire. Haunted by loss and buried secrets, he fights to keep his walls intact, using control as armor. Yet Nico's defiance and surrender chip away at him, tempting him toward a fire that could burn everything he's built... including the fragile life he's clinging to.

In a world where every play is watched and secrets don't stay buried, forbidden desire races toward the end zone. But when the lines between coach and player blur, who scores and who gets sacked?

~~ DNF at about 30% ~~

Thank you so much GRR for the arc!!

This was originally a DNF but it annoyed me so much that I decided to finish it.
I'm sort of convinced that maybe the wrong file was uploaded onto the site, because it felt more like an outline instead of a full-on book.

A lot of stuff doesn't really seem to make sense or be fully fleshed out. I think there's a promising story here, but it really needs more time in development.

I'm also subtracting a star for a character named Elon, because in 2026 I really don't want to be seeing the name of a transphobic n@zi in queer books. Sorry.

Unfortunately I didn't really enjoy this one. I always tend to struggle with 3rd person POV books, but for this one I kept finding issues in the reading itself.
I feel like things aren't clarified, the pacing is a bit weird and I have to play catch up with what was happening.
Cooper is a coach who coaches the team that Nico is on, okay.

Cooper lost his father in an accident?
Nico has a brother in a coma?
His mom wants to run for senator and reminds him of having good optics?
Cooper stops being a coach and starts up again as a quarterback on a rival team?

I cannot figure out if one character is dead or not either? I feel dumb, but they keep talking about seeing them at award shows and then talk about his funeral in the past?
Either way, it's weird as hell to hook up with both fraternal twins.

I would also really like to point out that this book has a lot of parallels with heated rivalry, and I'm not sure how I feel about that bc sure, there are bound to be parallels. Homophobic sports world, rivals, closeted players, etc.
But after a certain point, I felt like there were scenes taken too.

- It starts with a current day hookup
- The romance is also taking place over 7-8 ish years and has a date style header for each chapter
- The shower scene and the whole "not here" thing
- One MMC is gay, the other is bi. The gay MMC has a girlfriend. Bi MMC asks gay MMC "Do you like girls?"
- The injury scene and drug loopiness
- Dead parent who was supportive, living parent insists on carrying on legacy and making the family look good. Plus both work gov jobs?
- Rooftop scene in suits at an award show where they have ignored each other all night, one MMC has to leave for a flight soon
- A hookup at one of their houses that breaks the rules and one of the characters gets freaked out and runs away

There might be more and I'm not claiming anything, but I felt like there were just a lot of similarities that I noticed. I'm not going to point out the whole grumpy x playboy dynamic, with stuff that's easily dismissible.
I don't want to post later ones to risk spoilers, but yeah. There is a fair amount of overlap.

Wow. This story completely captivated me. From the very beginning I could tell this was going to be something special, and Logan absolutely delivered. The way he took the spirit of Heated Rivalry and transformed it into a football setting was brilliant. It adds new layers, more emotional weight, and a level of complexity that kept me glued to the story the entire time. 🏈✨

Cooper and Nico meet under the worst possible circumstances. After a devastating accident, Nico steps in to replace Cooper as quarterback. Cooper, still dealing with everything he’s lost, is eventually convinced to come back—not as a player, but as Nico’s coach.

The tension between them is immediate. Sharp. Electric. And when Cooper finally gives in to Nico’s relentless curiosity, what starts between them turns into a situationship that is anything but simple.

What makes this story so powerful is the time we spend with them. We follow Cooper and Nico over the years, watching the cracks form in Cooper’s carefully built walls. Seeing those defenses slowly crumble was both beautiful and heartbreaking. This isn’t always an easy story to read—it hurts in the right places. You feel the frustration, the longing, the fear, and more than anything you just want these two to find their way to happiness.

And trust me, their HEA is not handed to them easily. It’s fought for, earned, and that makes it all the more satisfying when it finally comes. ❤️

If you love emotional, slow-burning MM romance with complicated characters, real struggles, and a payoff that makes the entire journey worth it… go read this. Seriously. 📚✨

If that ^^^ quote made you think of Meredith (Grey's Anatomy), me too, and the situation is just as devastating. Like rip out your heart and stomp on it a little, just for good measure. Highly recommend, obviously.

My first impressions...Nico is a brat, but a sad brat. Cooper is a jerk, but a sad jerk. Both of these mf'ers are gonna break my heart - and probably each others. Spoiler alert: I was not wrong.

Nico and Cooper are a lot of things. Nico is sunshine, a quick smile, and the boundless energy that comes with new discoveries. Cooper is pensive, quick to react, and shrouded in secrets. His whole life is a series of finding new ways to hide. They are drawn to each other though and the chemistry is quick.

When I tell you these two put me through it. I was hurting and smiling and at one point crying on an airplane full of people. Good times. I wasn't sure how we were making it to the hea but oh how sweet it was; completely worth the wait.

Also, shout out to Stassi for being one of my favorite side characters. I would love to read her story!

*I was gifted an ARC copy of this book**

I’ve seen others compare this to Heated Rivalry, but with football. While I can see a few similarities, it’s ultimately a very different story with very different characters. One thing the books do share, though, is the feeling they left me with—the sadness of knowing that situations like this likely happen in real life. Athletes who are afraid to come out because of the potential damage to their careers. It’s a sad reality, and I hope one day it won’t be.

Cooper and Nico are both complicated characters dealing with complicated feelings for each other, while also carrying the grief of losing loved ones. They start out in a coach/rookie dynamic, but eventually become rival quarterbacks, both chasing the same dream of winning the Super Bowl.

I loved their connection, even though it was often heartbreaking. Nico is such a sweetheart, while Cooper lives in constant fear and tries to control everything around him—which leads to him hurting Nico again and again. Nico keeps putting his heart on the line and showing his true feelings, only for Cooper to shut him down. And this back-and-forth goes on for six years! It was honestly so painful at times.

I really liked Stassi’s character and was so glad to see her give Cooper the push he needed in the end. Both characters show a lot of growth throughout the book, which I really appreciated. There were also so many beautiful, tender (and spicy!) moments between Nico and Cooper. The restaurant date where they danced and the New Year’s scene on the dance floor were two of my favorites. 🥵🌶️

I was thrilled to see them finally get their hard-earned HEA, but it was definitely quite the journey to get there. If you love a good sports romance, I’d definitely recommend checking this one out.

Steamy and angsty! My favorites. LOL I loved Nico and Cooper - we really got to know them so well. They start as player/coach and then turn into rivals on separate teams. The way their relationship evolved was so good. You could really feel their emotions as they took you on the ride with them. This book spanned about 6 years with the guys as they navigated their secret and (to them) forbidden relationship. I loved watching how they dealt with their own personal issues and how little by little they let the other in. Cooper really needed to work through his loss and trauma and I loved the cage metaphor - it was so fitting. I absolutely adored Nico and my heart broke every time his did. He did what he had to do and it really fit. I loved it and was cheering for him. We also see these guys discover what "family" actually is, and that was so great - I'm glad it worked out for all involved.
This is a great start to a new series and I can't wait to read about all the other guys. I hope we see a lot of Cooper and Nico, though, because I just love them.

Red Zone Heat is the first book in a new series by Logan Rivers and I was intrigued by the blurb. For all that it’s a football book, it focuses more on the characters rather than the game. While there were parts of this story I really enjoyed, the narrative style was a little harder for me. This story is told in snippets, mostly of times the two MCs are able to spend together. For me, this made for a somewhat choppy story. There are a lot of scene breaks, and I felt that just as I was getting absorbed into the tale, it would shift. Often there would be a time jump, usually many months in the future. While I can see how many readers wouldn’t have an issue with this, for me it felt a bit disjointed.

Read Kris’s review in its entirety here.

4.5⭐️ 3🌶

The push and pull along with the emotional depth of this book kept me from putting this down. This was full of hurt/comfort, deliciously hot encounters and a slow building love story. This story took us though many years and I really appreciated how the author made sure to denote the dates along the way. I really liked the complexity of the characters, there circumstances and emotions involved this book.

Cooper and Nico are complex and but they are fire together. They burn hot and throughout their story they get burned in painful ways. The have stunning chemistry but their careers make the situationship/relationship really hard. They both have emotions and personal tramas that add even more difficulty to them being able to be happy.

Cooper and Nico took my breath away and stole my heart. I really liked their vulnerable quite moments, sometimes just being there is the most importantthing. I liked that we see them for years growing a trust and slowly breaking eachothers walls apart. Its a hard heartbreaking hard fought HEA.

Thank you to Logan Rivers for this ARC. These are my honest opinions and feelings.

This was spicy and angsty. Overall, I enjoyed it but there were a few things that didn't sit right with me. The dead ex was abit over the top for me and somethings that were related with that storyline just weirded me out. Then the ex twin sister storyline, I was like why? I found myself annoyed, screaming at or not liking both MCs which made the story not as enjoyable. I did love the emotional turmoil about being closeted.

I would like to thank GRR for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

So I'll get this out of the way right from the start.

***If you are a fan of Heated Rivalry you're going to clock some things.***

And as this IS my first Logan Rivers romance, and I'm unfamiliar with their game, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and not look too closely at the things that made me feel protective of the OG sauce.

That being said, what I'm NOT going to do is make "hotel rooftop conversations" or the mention of a "charger" or the word "rivalry" or being bi with a gay partner etc etc a no-go zone for the rest of time. That's just too intense a reaction for the space we're in.

But ofc ymmv so you do you.

Now that that's out of the way, here's my review in the form of a list of (🗸)pros and (❌)vibe-nots in no particular order:

🗸 the narrative style was immersive and compelling and I enjoyed the flow…for the most part. Most chapters led with calendar dates that I found a bit distracting.

🗸 the tone of this love story was a lot heavier and more serious than I had expected. But I appreciated the emotional weight to the themes of grief and loneliness and keeping who you love a secret while being successful in hypermasculine pro sports.

It's complicated, and real life, and 2slgbtqia+ love on the DL in pro sports will not be a "thing of the past" any time soon.

🗸And as jacked up as their "situationship to relationship" energy was at times, Nico and Coop shared some moments of tenderness that I found really moving.

I actually enjoyed the melodrama between those soft times though tbh lol! It was so extra when they were sex-spiralling idiots that it felt like I was watching a queer NFL soap opera ;p

🗸 Lastly, I genuinely loved that Nico and Coop's HEA was a soft and sweet one after the rollercoaster of hardships they'd endured.

❌ Coop's mother.

Her characterization (which is usually in the province of pro sports disaster dads, so I guess that's a tasty take) sent me into space and gave me visceral levels of ick on his behalf.

So kudos to Rivers for nailing the narcissim.

❌ But ALSO,
Cooper was rich enough to live lifetimes off his wealth,
and though he DID push back each time mother rocked up insidiously

I was still very confused as to whyyyy he allowed her to carry out her agenda and inform his GROWN MAN ACTIONS?

I have no rich white man sympathy left to give.

❌ Niko's brother's name was Elon. WHY? EW.

TLDR :

🗸 I would be interested in reading a DIFFERENT Logan Rivers MM Sports Romance that is as far away from this one was in shape and plot, because I honestly liked their writing style and emotional intensity.

❌ I was NOT a fan of the way this carried enough HR flavour to make me wary and uncomfortable at times, but I'm erring on the side of Rivers being a heavy-handed RR stan more than anything unsavoury.

ARC provided by Gay Romance Review

I’m rounding this up to 4 stars, though it probably lands closer to 3.5 for me.

First, the positives: the writing itself is solid. The dialogue felt natural, and the story relies more on showing rather than telling, which is something I always appreciate in romance. Structurally it reminded me a bit of Heated Rivalry. It has time jumps, rivals with a secret sexual relationship, and a relationship that develops over years rather than weeks. There’s also plenty of spice, which normally works for me. Interestingly, some of the sex scenes ran a little long for my taste, but I did appreciate the exploration of roles. I liked the moment where Nico tries vers and realizes he actually prefers bottoming; it felt like an honest bit of self-discovery rather than something thrown in for variety.

Where the book lost some points for me was more about the story choices than the writing.

One of my least favorite romance tropes is the lingering presence of a deceased ex, and here it plays a very large role in Cooper’s character. His grief is clearly meant to be central to the story, but at times it felt like it overshadowed the developing relationship with Nico. I found myself wondering how Nico managed to stay as understanding as he did for so long.

And that leads to my biggest struggle: Nico is genuinely sweet and loyal, while Cooper was kind of a dick. The dynamic sometimes felt unbalanced, starting with that mean situation with the coaching where Cooper was aware of the reality of the situation while Nico the rookie was totally kept in the dark. Honestly, I don’t think I could have gotten over that but I guess there would have been no book if I had been the MC.

I appreciated when Nico eventually reached a breaking point and pushed back. The resolution works reasonably well, even if I still wished for a little more emotional accountability from Cooper. Personally, I would have loved a bit more groveling before the final reconciliation.

Some elements near the end (particularly Nico’s Christmas gift to Cooper) didn’t quite land for me, but that’s very much a matter of personal taste.

Overall, even though some of the tropes didn’t work for me, the writing itself is strong, the dialogue is good, and the story kept me reading. I’d absolutely be interested in seeing books about some of the other players in this world.

🎶 Birdy - Wings has been replaying here for me for quite some time now
Great choice of a song, honestly. Apart from being deep, fitting to the story and just beautiful, this song meant a lot to me when I met my husband 13 years ago and it was resonating both with me and with the story just perfectly 🤍

I was convinced I wouldn’t cry. I was very wrong 🤷🏻‍♀️ But let’s talk a bit.

I feel like I should mention that if you loved Heated Rivalry, this story will definitely resonate: a secret relationship, a long timeline with huge gaps between meetings and the constant tension of something that exists but can’t fully exist.
That said, this story is very much different than that.

For the first half of the book I honestly struggled a little. I kept trying to convince myself that I believed in the depth of Cooper and Nico’s feelings.
They were both too guarded and insecure that their connection sometimes feels restrained or even forced. Cooper especially frustrated me at times really bad.

But as it all unfolded I realised that this wasn’t the kind of romance we usually get.
This relationship isn’t dramatic or explosive in the traditional romance sense. They don’t fall in love obviously for the reader, it’s quieter, more cautious. And much more human to me.

These are two people in an impossible situation, and their reactions reflect that. They protect themselves and hold back.

And then, as level-headed and grounded as the story felt throughout most of the book, the final stretch hit me much harder than I expected. I felt punched in the gut more than once. I did not expect that avalanche of feelings. And I finally cried 😭

The epilogue broke me totally - I almost never cry during the epilogues, usually by that point everything is neatly resolved and the emotional storm has passed.
But here I was sitting in tears - and that says a lot about how deeply the story ultimately landed.

What started as a read I wasn’t entirely sure about ended up being 5 stars read and I thank a lot for the privilege of being an ARC reader 🤍

Arc review

A steamy, emotional forbidden romance
Red Zone Heat is a MM sports romance that has forbidden desire, emotional depth and the high pressure of professional football in one. The book follows Nico, a talented rookie quarterback. He has everything to prove and is having a reckless streak. Cooper a retired quarterback, now a coach, is brought in to mentor him. The chemistry between them is instant, electric and o so dangerous. Cooper is controlled and haunted by his past while Nico is all fire, defiance and raw ambition. Their personalities clash on more than one occasion but together. Their attraction towards each other lead to a forbidden affair, that can threaten both their careers.
The coach/player dynamic is incredibly hot. The power imbalance, the stolen moments and the risk of being caught.... bam! The sexual tension between these two is off the charts and when their emotional vulnerability finally surface is very satisfying.
The character are well developed and complex. Cooper carries a lot of guilt, grief and self loathing with him. He uses control as armor. The struggles of not being a player anymore and being bisexual on top of that is weighting on him. Nico on the other hand is insecure and lonely. He is desperate to probe he is more than just a replacement for Cooper.
The contrast between the high energy world of professional sport and the intimate secretive moments between Cooper and Nico are well balanced. The spicy scenes are hot, emotional and do the story justice. The end of the book is satisfying, both characters making a difficult choice that feel true to who they are.
What I would have added would be some more details of Luke's death and Cooper his role in this. I think this would make the book even more emotional. I would also loved more stage time for Stassi. She seems like an interesting character.

What a wild ride

4.5 stars

First off I have never read a book set up quite like this one. This book goes through many different years and I definitely appreciate the dates being shown otherwise this would have been very confusing.

First we start with Nico and former player turned coach Cooper. You can immediately tell both men are pretty broken though all the whys are not apparent. Nico is a brat through and through. Cooper is an ahole. This is apparent in every interaction.

This story is brutal and will rip your heart out and not just once... These two have some serious chemistry but its often a bit toxic. When Nico gets injured Cooper decides he wants to play again instead of coach which means Nico will have to be traded.

Cooper is so lost. He has this huge thing hovering over him at all times. He is also publicly with a woman he has been with for a very long time though really she just hides that he is gay.

Nico didn't originally plan to play football but he decided to do it to follow someone else's dream because they no longer could. This definitely plays part in his personal struggles. He also uses being a brat as a shield when things get too heavy.

There is a brutal push and pull throughout this story. The men meet up whenever they are able to get away with it. But there is a very big defining moment when there is a switch in their dynamic from just occasional f buddies to something more. Though it doesn't change anything at the time.

I definitely wasn't sure how this book was going to find a happy ending through most of it. However, I absolutely live the way it came together. I can't wait to read the next story.

This book had me feeling all sorts of emotions. I felt joy, grief, anxiety, anger and love. Af times I also wanted to throw my phone at the wall because Cooper got on my nerves!

I swear, at times I wanted Nico to just walk away. He deserved better than to be trapped in Cooper’s web of fear and indecisions. I know it would have hurt their careers if they were found out, but Cooper was dimming Nico’s light and I hated that.

I know Cooper was grieving the loss of his ex, but he was selfish to want to keep Nico was a dirty little side secret. And on top of that, he would make him feel like he didn’t matter.

Nico was slowly withering away with someone who would never let go of the past. And when he finally found the courage to stand up for himself, Cooper offers him what he always wanted. But it was too late.

“𝕋𝕙𝕠𝕤𝕖 𝕒𝕣𝕖 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕕𝕤 𝕀 𝕟𝕖𝕖𝕕𝕖𝕕 𝕥𝕠 𝕙𝕖𝕒𝕣 𝕒 𝕝𝕠𝕟𝕘 𝕥𝕚𝕞𝕖 𝕒𝕘𝕠.”

I low key felt proud of Nico for being strong enough to walk away from this toxic relationship. Even if he broke his own heart in the process.

Cooper needed to decide whether or not he would keep loving a ghost or take a chance on Nico. He needed to do some groveling, though. I would have wanted Cooper to beg Nico to give him another chance but I’ll take it.

Overall, this was a very good story. It really showed how much of a toll it takes on closeted people to love someone. Having to hide your love because the rest of the world has a stick up you know where and can’t fathom that queer people deserve to be happy, it’s just sad 😔

I can’t wait for book two. Hopefully it won’t skyrocket my anxiety and blood pressure the way this one did😆

DNF @ 15%

I really didn't like the writing for Nico and Cooper's first meeting. It was like three sentences BUT it didn't make any sense. Nico bumps into Cooper, snaps at him to watch where he's going, then in the very next sentence he tells Cooper he's his biggest fan. I expected at least an "omg, I'm sorry" to bridge between Nico's lines because that's normal when talking to someone? And Cooper, instead of rightly being dumbfounded by the sudden 180 in subject, just replies to him as if nothing was wrong? Then he ends with "good luck with your headache" and how did he even know Nico had one? Because Nico was wearing sunglasses?

Having multiple short scenes in chapters made the pacing feel too quick. Introducing new characters every scene didn't help either. Chapter two alone had Ryan, Tommy, Stassi in three separate scenes establishing Cooper's relationships with each in smaller sized scenes that maybe could've been integrated better.

I called it quits when Cooper basically started off cheating on his GF. I'm not categorically opposed to cheating in romance novels BUT I do need there to actually be a good reason and fighting shown first. I needed Cooper to establish an internal conflict over wanting to have sex with people other than Stassi and have him fail when Nico pushed his desires over the edge. Having him already start off having cheated with Ryan and so easily starting something with Nico was gross. I'm supposed to be rooting for this sleazy, non-loyal guy to end up with a romantic HEA when he was so easily able to cheat on someone he made a commitment to? Nty. 1.5 stars rounded up.

RED ZONE HEAT is the first book in the Red Zone series.

What to expect:
🌶️High Heat

😢All the Angst

🏈Coach/Player

🤫Secret Relationship

🫡Alpha/Brat

🖐️Touch-Starved

🙏Praise kink

❤️Love after Loss 🥺

Cooper Callahan was an amazing quarterback until tragedy struck and he found himself retiring but he still needed football in his life so he decided to help the rookie who was clearly in need of some guidance. Nico Fallon was young and inexperienced. He was good but tended to make dumb decisions that's where Cooper came in. He was trying to teach him to be better but Nico made his job harder. But Cooper and Nico are more alike than they realized. They are both holding secrets that could ruin everything if they get out.
This books spans their situationship/relationship over seven years. The highs and lows of being in a secret relationship and being terrified of someone finding out. The mental toll of losing one of the only men that understood you where you could be yourself. It was an emotional rollercoaster that I was here for. I instantly was invested and loved Cooper and Nico. The push and pull was heartbreaking. This is a new author to me and I am adding to my must read list!! I can't wait to see what comes next!!

I was given a free copy of this book to read and review for GRR.

Nico & Cooper - where to even begin? 😭

I cannot rave enough about Red Zone Heat. The character development is remarkable and the pacing was perfect for my reading style. You cannot help but love both Nico & Cooper from the get-go. But what is even more significant is that you will love them more by the end. They continually grow throughout the story. And although it's set in the professional sports world, their relationship is down-to-earth and relatable. They experience many of the challenges others face. I cannot personally relate to the whole being an amazing football player thing, BUT I can relate to the struggles of being forced to hide who you truly are. This book serves as a reminder to continue to break free and find your happiness.

And of course I cannot forget to mention... the spice. was. HOT. 🔥 The sexual between them was electrifying and... WHEW I am still in my feels from the heat these two produce. You will run the gamut of emotions throughout Red Zone Heat - but do not fret, you WILL be panting over these two hotties.

But ultimately, it's the story that spoke to me the most and I will continue to dream of Nico & Cooper every night.

I cannot wait for the continuance of this series, as I loved many of the side characters (Matteo, my love... my light).

I love hockey romance, but this one isn't for me. Unfortunately, if I don't like one of the MCs, then I lose interest and I really didn't like the uneveness of the MCs relationship.

A deceased ex haunts their relationship for too long. The immediate switch at the start to only a short time later seems a little pointless and since I don't really enjoy time jumps, adding in unnecessary ones is frustrating. And one MC doesn't actually seem like a particularly nice person, so I'm not rooting for their relationship.

The story is a little Heated Rivalry ish, and since it's so very popular right now, I'm not sure the scenes with similarities or story overlaps actually do this any favours, because the rest of the story needs more fleshing out.

This is an ARC, so perhaps there is more fleshing to come, but normally that's Beta stage, so my rating is based on the story being complete.

I'm sorry these tropes are so very not to my taste. One thing I love about hockey romance is the supportive nature of having each others backs, and one thing I love about MM romance is that open communication tends to lead to a more even relationship. This story doesn't rely on these common themes, so unfortunately I didn't get what I want from my MM hockey romance reading.

I enjoyed this. The push and pull, the emotional depth, the tension—I couldn’t put it down.

Cooper and Nico are intense together. The chemistry is immediate and electric, but their situation makes everything complicated. Coach and player, past trauma, career pressure… it’s a lot, and you really feel the weight of it throughout the story. Their relationship burns hot, but it also hurts, and watching them navigate that over the years was both beautiful and frustrating in the best way.

I loved the timeline aspect and seeing their connection grow slowly. The quiet, vulnerable moments between them really stood out. Sometimes it’s just about being there, and those scenes hit the hardest.

That said, Cooper definitely tested my patience. His fear and grief made him hold back in ways that hurt Nico, and there were moments I just wanted Nico to walk away and choose himself. Seeing Nico finally find his voice and stand up for what he deserved was such a powerful moment.

The mix of high-pressure football and their secret, emotional connection worked really well. It balanced the intensity with intimacy, and when they finally faced everything head-on, it felt earned.

Emotional, messy, frustrating, and full of heart. A slow-burn, hard-fought HEA that really takes you through it.

Review for Red Zone Heat by Logan Rivers

I have been lucky enough to have found the author Logan Rivers. I have quite enjoyed their writing style. I haven't read that many sports stories, but after reading this one, I so need more of this trope. This story is about Nico, who is a rookie football player. He is a rising quarterback star who is cocky and looking for anyone to see him, who he is, and what he can be as a person. Most don't know why he is this way. If that isn't enough, he finds out his new coach is Cooper Callahan, who is a retired icon himself. Nico finds himself pushed harder and harder by Cooper. Nico finds himself off the field, feeling hot just looking at Cooper. Should he feel this way or ignore the looks each gives the other? He isn't here to get his rocks off; he is here to become the best quarterback there has ever been. Will these two men put aside who they are and focus on each other on the field to see what they can be off the field in real life? The game only lasts a small amount of time for one day, but their lives could be so much longer if they allow it. I loved this story. It kept me addicted to the story till I read the last word.

An absorbing read from the first chapter, with a tension that builds quietly before hitting full force. The coach/player dynamic adds an immediate edge, but it’s the emotional weight behind it that really makes the story stand out.

Nico comes in with something to prove, all confidence and sharp edges, but there’s a clear need for validation underneath it that makes him more than just the typical cocky rookie. Cooper, in contrast, feels closed off and controlled, carrying far more than he lets on. Watching those walls slowly give way over time was one of the most compelling parts of the book.

The connection between them isn’t instant or easy it develops over time, shaped by pressure, proximity, and everything they’re both trying to avoid. That push and pull keeps things intense, with moments that feel just as fragile as they are charged.

There’s a real sense that nothing comes easily for them, and that struggle adds depth to both the romance and the overall story. It’s emotional without being overdone, and the payoff feels earned because of everything they go through to get there.

Nico Fallon is an upcoming football star. He is not having the best start to his season. When retired football legend Cooper Callahan is appointed to be his coach the rook needs to check his ego and start learning from the best of the best.
Right from their first meeting the chemistry between Nico and Cooper is explosive. Cooper exercises patience, control and discipline in everything he does. Nico on the other hand is cocky, quick to act, essentially a brat.
What I love about this book is the development of both Nico and Cooper. Cooper is harboring past wounds that will not let him move forward and keeps the careful walls he built around his heart in place. Nico is struggling with the fact he feels he is living a life that is not his own. But what remains is their unrelenting passion for each other.
This is a slow burning romance that deals with loss, heartbreak, long distance, secrets and time for these two to reach their HEA. And let me tell you, it is worth the ride!

4.25 stars. Thank you to the author for this arc! This was rather enjoyable and I think delved into a lot of important themes around the sports world such as masculinity, being closeted, and status, as well as some other life topics like grief and loss, toxic family dynamics, etc. Cooper and especially Nico are two charming leads in their own ways and their relationship felt very realistic and rooted in the world in which they lived. Lots of emotion and particularly the aspect of Cooper's relationship with Luke was touching. I will say that I felt the ending was somewhat rushed in my opinion, but I was nonetheless happy about it. Also, this appears to be the beginning of a new series and I'm led to believe the epilogue may have highlighted our upcoming characters. I would definitely be interested in seeing where they go as well as if Cooper and Nico make a return. Thank you again to Logan Rivers for the privilege in getting to read :)

This is a MM sports romance. Nico is a young, reckless quarterback who makes a lot of mistakes and suffers two concussions within weeks of the new season. Cooper was a quarterback until he suffered a bad injury, he is then hired to coach Nico. There is an instant attraction between the two, but both are not out. Cooper in fact has a girlfriend, the twin sister of his best friend who he lost. Cooper really is dealing with a lot of grief surrounding Luke. Cooper was a difficult character to like and empathize with, he was controlling, aloof and sometimes brusque with Nico. Nico is insecure in many ways but, he is sweet and considerate and when he finally stood up for himself I cheered him on. Now this book takes place over a long period of time. There were many hurdles these two needed to grow through to get their HEA. I liked the characters but I felt some events in the story didn’t make sense or needed more explanations. I enjoyed the romance between Nico and cooper.

Forbidden, Intense, and Just the Right Amount of Messy

This one came in hot and stayed hot.

Nico Fallon is all ego and pressure at the start—rookie QB trying to prove himself—but watching him unravel (and rebuild) under Cooper Callahan? That’s where this story hits. Cooper is controlled, closed-off, carrying way more than he lets on… and the second that tension shifts between them, it’s game over.

Their dynamic is EVERYTHING. Power, restraint, push and pull—it’s charged in a way that feels risky but addictive. The “good boy” energy? Yeah… that’ll do it.

What really sold me though was how their relationship develops beyond just the physical. There’s growth, vulnerability, and this underlying need in both of them that makes it feel deeper than just forbidden attraction.

I will say the middle drags just a bit pacing-wise—but honestly? The emotional payoff and tension carry it right through to a five-star finish.

I read about fifteen books a month, and this one is the best I have read this year. It had everything I want and need in a book. Two wonderful main characters, that have lines they should to cross no matter how hard they try to maintain professional boundaries, but we know they will due to their off the charts chemistry. Nico is the cocky up and coming hot NFL quarterback who lives for approval of others. He newly unretired coach, Cooper, is about control, is stoic, and keeps emotions in tack. He lives in fear of his past secrets. With their chemistry, they connect easily on the field as Nico seeks approval from Cooper, but they soon begin to connect off the field. Hold on for the ride in this one as so much happens in this roller coaster of emotions book. I was hooked from page one and read it in one sitting, left wanting a book two. A great book centered around connections, secrets, vulnerability, forbidden desires, and crossing professional lines to find HEA.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of this. I did appreciate that Nico finally had the chance to tell his family how he feels and what it’s been like for him his whole life. Even though I do think this part went well, I am kind of hoping that they are able to do some family therapy afterwards.
Honestly it feels like everyone in this book needs therapy (admittedly Cooper is at some point). And I wish there was some moment for Stassi. I get that she made some plot stuff happen for the MCs, but it felt like it was left like she was just going to live her life alone because she wasn’t going to feel safe with a partner because she doesn’t want to have sex. And I just. I need someone to sit her down and tell her about asexuality and that that is valid and that it doesn’t mean you can’t have a partner if you want one.

"They were in the red zone and about to score, but this touchdown felt so much f*cking different than any touchdown he'd had in his life."
.
.
Red Zone Heat can best be described as Heated Rivalry, but make it football. With that being said, this book is absolutely worth a read!

Nico Fallon is a somewhat reckless rookie on the rise. Cooper Callahan is a seasoned professional in recovery from loss and injury. When Cooper is brought in to coach Nico, the chemistry is undeniable. Cooper's coaching not only helps Nico elevate his game, but evokes feelings in Cooper he hasn't felt in quite some time.

However, there are a few problems. For example, when Cooper reenters the NFL, he becomes Nico's rival. Also, there are the underlying repercussions that would come from coming out in this industry.

Spanning across several years, championships, and life's many ups and downs, Red Heat Zone is a high heat and angsty read.

While Rivers is a "new to me" author, Cooper and Nico's story has put his writing on my radar, and I'm incredibly excited to see what he pens next.
