People Like That comprises Agnes Owens’ complete life's work in short stories. Witty and dark, Owens’ spare prose shocks and delights. Her talent for pithy, unsettling tales is as sharp as ever, confirming her place as one of Scotland’s finest contemporary writers.
Agnes Owens was a Scottish author. She was born in Milngavie in 1926 and spent most of her life on the west coast of Scotland. She has been married twice and raised seven children, also working as a cleaner, typist and factory worker.
Owens is unsentimental, honest, kind-hearted, wry and economical. The title story alone will make you wither to a heap of human KY in tears, vast tears of pain! Amazing. I love her. Thanks, Tuck. One of the best collections of short stories I’ve come across. Economic, unsentimental and sincere wee stories of those on the outlines ‘people like that’. They emerge gently with humour and then kick like a mule. Agnes has an eye for the uncanny and the mundane.
Compassionate, hardcore and honest - Owens will not let us look away.
