She just watched her whole life go up in flames. He's a socially awkward billionaire who considers "friendly" a four-letter word. A fake dating scheme, one bed, and zero chance they're not falling for each other. Avah & Jeremy coming April 16th!
USA Today and Top 5 Amazon Bestselling author Michelle Major writes swoon-worthy stories full of heart, heat, and guaranteed happily-ever-afters. When she’s not dreaming up romance, you’ll find her hiking the trails (or avoiding housework) in her home state of Colorado.
I've been eager for Avah and Jeremy's story since Michelle announced it. To say I devoured it is an understatement! I picked Someone to Keep up around 5:00 p.m. and finished before 11:00 p.m, barely stopping for sustenance; it was that good!
If you've read any of the prior Skylark books, you may have thought, until the previous one, that sharp-tongued Avah had it all: a loving fiancé, fantastic job, and more. Unfortunately, not everything's a fairy tale, and Avah was good at hiding the truth from everyone, including her closest friends.
On a trip that was supposed to be their honeymoon originally, Avah's finished faking it and will no longer accept meaningless platitudes or sweep things under the rug, even if it means life's about to get harder. Decision made, she kicks her fiancé, Jon, to the curb, damn the consequences. As fate would have it, Jeremy, her good friend Sloane's older brother, happens to be staying at the same resort, trying to woo a potential business partner. Finding Avah after the incident with Jon, he offers her a place to stay while she decides on her next steps.
Jeremy comes across as standoffish, smug, inflexible, and broody. However, Avah pushes past his rigid walls as if they don't exist by just being her tough, snarky self, and he likes it. Let me tell you, the man is smitten with Avah and her brashness.
Both of them are used to building barriers to keep people out due to childhood trauma. Avah finds ways to show people Jeremy's more approachable, relatable side. Meanwhile, Jeremy sees the real Avah beneath the mask and knows that her snark and attitude are there to keep people in check, and he's determined to get to know her better.
Her fiery attitude just pulls him closer, like a moth to a flame. Being attuned to all things Avah, he soon realizes that as much as he wants to fix everything for her, what she really needs is someone to stand by her while she figures things out for herself.
I enjoyed watching Avah pushing Jeremy's buttons, wanting to loosen him up. They bring out the best in each other, making them a perfect match!
I found so many of Avah's characteristics relatable. She possesses a tough exterior, soft heart, and a history of things that have made her question her self-worth. I needed her to find her joy and a much-earned happily-ever-after. I was invested from start to finish! Learning about the secrets she kept locked inside hurt my heart. I just wanted to give her a safe place to land, an ear to listen, and a shoulder to cry on when she was ready to open up. Thank goodness for Jeremy and her book club besties, who always have each other's backs. These women are fiercely loyal and more than willing to do anything for a friend in need.
Although unplanned, I'm so happy Michelle decided to write Avah’s story. It touches on some heavy topics, ones that many women have dealt with or are dealing with, and she handled them with understanding and care. I think many will find something to relate to when reading Someone to Keep.
This has been said before, but needs to be repeated: The Skylark Series gets better and better with every book! Sassy, resilient, loyal, and now battered by her ex-fiance', Avah escapes from their vacation bungalow on Bora Bora and falls asleep on the beach. She finds herself being lifted by a delectable smelling, strong man's arms - her friends billionaire/robotic brother Jeremy!
Jeremy encourages her to stay in his villa unconditionally as she gets herself together and recovers from her latest abuse from her asshat ex. Naturally, there is strong chemistry with tons of denial on both parts, but their story is full of snarky bantering (Avah never holds back and has a colorful vocabulary), helping each other become better humans, learn to trust in themselves, find out what it's like to have a partner who has your back, and you'll definitely feel some "Grinch vibes" from Jeremy!
Both were raised by very different parents: controlling, manipulative ex-con, neglecting, corrupt, weak. Avah has the strength and loyalty of her book club members to help her through her many life trials and they appoint her the next member to complete their bucket list challenge. Her friends encourage her to finally find her joy, something she never remembers having in her life. While she is attempting to find her joy, she also helps Jeremy address his emotions related to his and his sisters leukemia experiences and become more "human".
Some of my favorite moments in the book: Winnie telling Avah "You are worth more than free" A great Jeremy human moment with his Beauty and the Beast reference (minus the talking teapot) A bit of bantering between Avah and Winnie with the lyrics to the song "Milkshake" by Kelis Every single time Avah refers to her ex as an asshat! "Hell yeah, lumberjack!"
This book and series are worth every tear you shed, whether it be from laughter or an emotional moment (of which there are many). If you haven't starting reading The Skylark Series, please start now and I recommend reading them in order so you can experience the personal growth and strengths of each of the members of the book club!
This story is about Avah Harris who is stuck in an abusive engagement. She finds her strength she didn’t think she had and leaves him. Who she didn’t expect to fall for was her friend’s brother, Jeremy Wilson. Jeremy Wilson, brooding billionaire, falls hard for her and wants to do everything he can to make her feel safe and loved. Set in the fictional small town of Skylark, CO, you will find yourself immersed in beautiful scenery and connected to the characters instantly.
As a Colorado Native, I was OBSESSED with this story. I went to CU Boulder and was transported back when Pearl Street was mentioned. Not only is the scenery perfection, but the characters of Avah and Jeremy are the sweetest. There are scenes of abuse so if that is a trigger, definitely keep that in mind while reading. However Avah claims her story back and doesn’t let it define her. She is such a strong FMC and the caring attitude of Jeremy gives all the warm and fuzzies. This is book six in the series but can easily be read as a standalone.
I received an ARC from the author and am leaving an honest review. I read this book in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down
As always, I enjoyed catching up with the Cool Girls Book Club as Avah is the next one on the list to complete a bucket list challenge. Her story is heartbreaking but Avah has been written as such a strong character as she rises above the recent obstacles in her life and the toxic people in it. She realizes that Jeremy Winslow, older brother to her closest friend Sloane, could be key to her healing and possibly so much more.
This was a great addition to Michelle Major’s Skyark series and it looks like Sloane is up next. Wonderful, inspiring addition to this series with the same small town, found family vibe.
This series truly gets better with each book! I devoured this book in less than a day; I loved getting to see this side of Avah, and that there was more to Jeremy than just being Sloane’s mother hen older brother, they are truly made for one another. Loved every moment! And the set up for the next? Yes, Sloane, it’s your time!!
