Spencer Sekulin

When Spencer Sekulin isn’t on the road as a paramedic or studying, he is most likely writing. Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, Spencer fell in love with books at a young age, with authors like Terry Brooks and Eoin Colfer giving him an appetite for speculative fiction. Though he didn’t begin writing until university, he quickly discovered that it was just as fun as reading. The rest is history. His passions include emergency medicine, voice-overs, homemade coffee, travel obscura, and of course, writing.

After “The Last Wyvernslayer,” I knew I had to read Sekulin’s debut novel. Imagine my delight when he offered a complimentary advanced reader copy before I could even ask for one!

Whatever I expect from a genre, I think Sekulin enjoys turning my expectations upside-down.
Would I ever have imagined a redemptive blood sorcerer fantasy Western?
Nope.

As always, his writing is novel and engaging, full of banter and unexpected friendships, grappling with one’s inner self, wholesome family bonds, and the ruthless, powerful female characters who terrify the entire world.

All very nice things to read, of course. ;)

There’s a bit more profanity in this title than I usually prefer, which is somewhat to be expected for a moderately gritty Western, but be aware it pushes the PG-13 rating closer to R territory if that’s something you’d be uncomfortable with.

There are also a few moments of character writing that felt a little too abrupt or introspective to me, but again, that’s a matter of personal taste, and they may even change between the ARC edition and the final version.

I like the redemptive core of the book very much, and the way one of the characters relishes life, no matter how difficult it is, and fights to keep it.
Books could use more of this.

This fantasy with a heart brings lyrical depth to an atmospheric adventure packed with drama, action and magic.

When a young man fighting to support his family becomes entangled in a life-threatening confrontation between the forces of good and evil, he must dig deep to save his family, his country, and himself.

I got a chance to read an advance copy of this book and I’m so happy I did!

Wow! This book was fantastic! Wild West steampunk with magic ... I didn't even know that was a sub-genre, and I LOVE IT! Spencer Sekulin kept me guessing throughout with a story that twisted like a hangman's noose. 100% recommend!
