Tales of Aedrea #4

There Be Dragons Here

Rate this book
At 182 years old, Hilda Rockfall thought her adventuring days were long behind her.

For over seventy years, she roamed the realm as a ranger with the adventuring party Stone & Splendor—taking quests, slaying beasts, and collecting monster teeth like trophies from the boundless sea to the edge of the wilds. But for the past eight decades, she's traded her sword for slippers, living the quiet life of a proud grandmother nestled in the mountains, telling tales no one quite believes and baking a mean honey crumble.

That peace is shattered when an old friend—and former party member—passes on and leaves Hilda one final quest: scatter his ashes at a secret location marked on a map they looted back in their glory days.

Hilda figures it’ll be a nice little hike. Maybe a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

But then she opens the map.

And scrawled across the bottom in faded ink are four unsettling words:

There be dragons here.

Read for free with Kindle Unlimited (till paperback arrived) and physical book 📖.

Hilda and Frida need to live forever! Can I have my own dragon 🐉 guardian please?? I'll be responsible I promise ;-).

I just want to live in this wonderful world the author has created ❤️.

It's like coming home 🏡 each time I dive into the pages.. I can't wait for the next one 😍.

This had some funny, sweet, and heart tugging moments 💖.

Books about solely dragon history and young Hilda's adventures as a ranger I'm crossing my fingers for :).

I'd definitely do my best to honor a promise like Hilda did :).

my rating is 4.5

The Aedrea books have been some of my most favourite cozy fantasy. The author just gets better and better as the series goes on.
This tale of Hilda and her quest to take the ashes of her best friend to a resting place of his choosing, combines the best of cozy. Low stakes (but not no stakes) and heartwarming family and friend relationships, form the base of the story. Adding in that Hilda is a former adventurer ranger and her granddaughter Frida is planning on taking up the mantle from her gram, it makes for a lovely story of passing on wisdom and skills from one generation to another. I love that our main character is older and suffers in her older body, so easily relatable. As always, the authors writing skill is shining bright when he writes animal companions, from war goats to dragons! How do you not adore Morsel and Tinktink?

thank you to the author for the opportunity to read and review this title. my thoughts are my own.

Old people are cool and it’s refreshing to see a character be both old and cool in a fantasy adventure!
I like the flashbacks of Hilda telling her adventuring tales, reminiscing, and seeing how one character can be so many things at once, adventurer, grandmother, homemaker, ranger. Just becuase someone is aging doesn’t mean they stop being who they have been all this time.
This book ticked all the boxes for me, cozy fantasy feeling with adventure, wholesome characters you grow to care about as you read. The pure girl power in this book can’t go without mention. Didn’t think I would ever read a book that passes the bechdel test between dragons.
Now, I’m off to smoke like a halfling on holiday and try my hand at that honey crumble recipe that is provided.

This book was the exact cozy fantasy escape I didn’t know how badly I needed. From the moment we meet Hilda Rockfall an elderly, retired adventurer turned mountain grandmother I was completely sold. I loved seeing older character representation done so well. It’s refreshing and honestly rare to center a story on an older heroine who has already lived a full, legendary life and is still allowed to be brave, capable, and curious. Her age isn’t treated as a weakness, but as something that adds depth, humor, and heart to the story. The premise alone is charming: a legendary ranger who has traded monster slaying for slippers, baking, and being lovingly dismissed as a teller of tall tales. But when an old friend’s final request pulls her back onto the road, the story becomes something quietly powerful. What follows isn’t a world ending quest, but a deeply personal journey filled with memory, grief, warmth, and just enough danger to remind us who Hilda once was and still is.I leaned fully into the experience while reading this one: fantasy ambience playing, candle lit, completely wrapped in the mood. The pacing is gentle, the stakes are low in the best way, and the world feels lived in and comforting. It’s the kind of fantasy that reminds you adventure doesn’t end with age, that bravery can look like honoring the past, and that sometimes the most meaningful quests are the smallest ones.If you love cozy fantasy, older protagonists, retired heroes I highly, highly recommend this book. Comes out January 20th!!

**ARC Review*
I received an ARC from the author but the thoughts are my own!

Tales of Aedrea continues to surprise and delight. I thought that it couldn't get better than last years Halflings Harvest but what Rowland has written here is among the best fantasy storytelling I've yet read.

Aedrea actually feels large in this one with a weeks long quest at the heart of the story. The world is large but the story remains personal and very cozy.

I will not delve into spoilers but the relationship with a late in the narrative character and the partys mount had me laughing and smiling.

The familial bonds, both blood and found, are so fully realized and well written, it's so easy to connect with these characters and their interactions.

Also, can a dead character be your favorite character? Because the dead character at the center of the story is maybe my favorite character. At least Hilda's memories of him.

shout-out to tinktink for being a super fun character as well!

Fridas arc is also very satisfying and fun to watch unfold. she probably my second favorite character the way she dives headfirst into any situation and never has any fear. I'd love to see what happens with her past the epilogue.

I got an advance reader copy of There Be Dragons Here, book 4 in the Tales of Aedrea series, and finished reading it overnight. This tale follows Hilda, and her granddaughter Frida in a cozy fantasy adventure. On their journey they cross paths with some incredible characters, learn a lot about themselves and each other, all while experiencing growth and change and delightful reminiscing from Hilda's tales of her past. S.L. Rowland writes beautifully and each book has been a delicious escape from reality. This is the story you didn't know you needed. Off to bake a Honey Crumble now!

ARC Review

In the latest installment of the tales of Aedrea we follow Hilda a 182 year old retired adventurer, that is until an old friend passes on and Hilda embarks on one more quest. With highs, lows, unexpected guests and of course dragons!

Although on the shorter side I absolutely flew through this book and just couldn't put it down. A hobbitesque adventure, steeped in moments of nostalgia, this is another great addition to the series and highly recommend reading this and all other entries if you are a fan of cozy fantasy.

Firstly thank you to the Author for choosing me to be an early access reader. This is my first ARC read and will be an honest review of the book.

There Be Dragons Here tells a story of the wisdom of a last adventurer paired with the curiousity of a first adventurer, set in a cosy adventure style and in a world rich with discoveries and world building. It can be read as a standalone or as a continuation; you need not know the characters intimately to connect with them. Fair warning, this adventure is filled with the grief of saying goodbye to old friends and lives, as well as an emotional connection to family within two different species. But true to the title - there be dragons, and those dragons are amazing. There are laughs and giggles aplenty should you choose to embark on your own journey with Hilda and her companions.

I could not put this book down. I read most of this on a road trip, listening to fantasy orchestral music, vividly imagining the quiet moments by the fire, the tense hunting scenes and the dramatic encounters of the mythical kind. Although this is my first taste of S.L Rowland's work, I felt a sense of familiarity and home as I read. Each moment felt special and perfectly described. It made me excited to read more of the world in the other books. The epilogue was so welcome. My only wish is that I got another illustration of the epic male and female beards we were forced to imagine.

A quote that stuck with me:

"It's nice when people remember your accomplishments. Sometimes, they even take on a life of their own as time passes, but not everything needs to be shared with the world. Sometimes, it's just nice to enjoy the things for what they are."

S.L Rowland, this is an accomplishment worth the effort it took to create. A story worth telling and shared with the world. I hope that anyone who reads this can enjoy the simplicity that is enjoying a good book such as this.

Gather around the hearth, folks, it's time to hear about a tale of adventure, family, legacy, and friendship.

Hilda is a dwarf approaching 200 years old. Though she is presently known as a wife and a grandmother, she was an adventurer of the highest caliber what seems to be a lifetime ago. She would regal her children and grandchildren about her adventures with her crew of three other dwarves, and this ranger had plenty of magnanimous tales to tell! As entertaining as the tales were, her family doubted that this grandmother of a dwarf would have possibly have fought and explored the way she described.

That is, until a final quest from her last crew mate set her off on one final adventure, one in which her granddaughter Frida followed along for the ride (unbeknownst to Hilda!).

There Be Dragons Here is a story that gave me all the fuzzy feels of having a relationship with a grandmother who would share her knowledge and keep her legacy alive in the heart of her granddaughter. The imagery that S.L. Rowland paints brought vivid pictures to mind that lured me in to the story from the very first pages. The memorable characters, both friend and foe, two-legged and winged alike, has left a warm impression on my heart.

This is my very first ARC review, I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to write about this book!

I received an ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.

There are slight SPOILERS in my review.

This was an absolutely delightful book about adventure, family, friends and guess what? Dragons. Hilda has been tasked with spreading the ashes of one of her old adventuring party members as their final wish. It felt reminiscent of the anime Frieren: Beyond Journeys End, at time. Specifically, the older party member (Hilda) traveling around with a new apprentice (Frida) while giving flashbacks to some of the original party’s journey and memories.

I enjoyed the growth of Frida throughout the adventure, as well as the relationship Hilda and Frida have. There’s also a few mentions/easter eggs, of the other books set in Aedrea.

Believe it or not there was dragons in the book! Getting a bit of a sneak into the dragon’s society culture was a fun experience. I’m kind of hoping there may be a dragon book at some point in the Tales of Aedrea series. Either the dragon riders that mentioned or even the trouble in the north that was briefly mentioned.

Overall this was a warm and cozy adventure and I will be recommending it to anyone who may like a nice little weekend adventure.

While I haven’t yet read the other books in the series, I recently finished this one and truly enjoyed it. It’s a cozy style fantasy filled with many of the traditional fantasy adventure tropes you would expect. But this, while an adventure in itself, focuses more on the cozy aspects and the idea that while all adventures have a level of danger, they are not all filled with blood and battle.

Seventy years after retiring from her adventuring lifestyle, a dwarf and sixteen year old granddaughter set out in an adventure to honor the last wishes of an old friend. Their long journey to spread his Ashe’s in the heart of the dragon lands will lead them through many dangers and wonders of the land. Along the way the retired remittences of times past and use the experience to teach her grandchild how to be successful adventurer. But even for someone who has traveled the world, the old adventurer discovers there are still wonders that she has never seen.

The book of very well written and the world is very deep with lore. I enjoyed the more cozy aspects of the novel as they were refreshing and lighter than many stories I read. I will definitely be reading the other books in the series in the future. Fans of rich fantasy worlds and cozy stories will love this.

I got to meet The Arthur Steve Rowland at a book signing for Matt Dinniman. Firstly, he is a gracious and very kind author when I spoke to him. He and the delightful lady with him recommended License to Troll to me and that got me into Steve’s writing style.

When I was selected as one of the lucky advance readers for There Be Dragons Here I looked forward to a cozy litRPG adventure. While I definitely got to join a journey into the world of Aedrea I also got to meet characters that quickly felt like old friends. It was amazing to see how much Steve has grown as an author and learning that there was a whole new cozy world that I could venture into.

This book serves as a reminder that it’s never too late to do what you love and that true friendship transcends life and death. Plus, dragons. Beautiful dragons.

Now, having had a taste of Aedrea I look forward to going through the rest of the cozy adventures and stories he offers us.

This is recommended for dragon lovers, LitRPG fanatics, and anyone who wants a fun adventure without the grueling pace of stress that others offer. Read this and you won’t be disappointed. Then go through the rest of S.L. Rowland’s growing line of books.

I received an ARC of this book and am leaving a review voluntarily.

Okay, I love the indie cozy fantasy genre and this book is a perfect example of why. An elderly protagonist. A non elf protagonist. A journey to fulfill a friend’s final wish, with an emphasis on the relationships more than the quest? Most traditional books wouldn’t dare. But I love every single element of this.

First, I love dwarves but they don’t seem to get as much attention as other races on fantasy. I absolutely ate up all the cultural bits here—the ceremonies, the descriptions, the phrasing, all of it! I was in heaven this whole book.

And the voice! The way these characters talk and interact could be hung on a wall it’s so gorgeous. It’s raw, unique and felt absolutely like people who knew one another inside out. Sarcasm, little snips at one another that only dear friends would know. It was perfect.

Hilda having a respect for both her past as an add three and her present as a grandmother was so refreshing! They’re different aspects of her life but they’re equally fulfilling.

I will definitely be buying a physical copy!

* An ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review*

There Be Dragons Here follows former adventurer Hilda Rockfall on one last journey when her friend and former party member Frey Ashborne passes away and leaves her one last quest. So begins her journey towards the Dragonlands to scatter his ashes. Along the way she finds her grand daughter Frida has snuck along wishing to become an adventurer her self. Along the way we experience the joys and excitement of learning to survive in the wilderness, the grief of losing an old friend, and the fact that even the young can teach things to the older generations. For fans of the series there are easter eggs and callback, nothing you would need to know to enjoy the story, and some pop culture references. Once again S.L. Rowland shows why the Tales of Aedrea is the best cozy fantasy series put today.

Hilda is a 182 year old dwarf that used to be part of an adventuring team. She’s been retired for years but the last of her old crew died and his dying wish was for Hilda to scatter his ashes amongst the dragons…so Hilda decides she has one more adventure in her.

I love everything this man writes. There Be Dragons Here is a beta read that I was asked to read - the book should be coming out towards the end of April and I highly recommend it if you like cozy fantasy, found family, adventures and dragons!

***Review of an e-ARC of the book***

Another great book in the Tales of Aedrea series. For those who like cozy fantasy, this should be a hit. This also gave me vibes of Kings of the Wyld a bit, but in a much cozier setting. Maybe a bit of a slow start to the story, but as usual by the time I got to the end of it I wanted more story with these characters.

WARNING, SOFT SPOILERS AHEAD, BUT NOTHING THAT WILL RUIN THE STORY

I really enjoyed this. Different to Cursed Cocktails, but absolutely in a good way. This isn’t just a cosy remix with new faces; it’s its own epic cosy adventure, and it stands confidently on its own two-legs(you'll get this once you've read it).

Returning to Aedrea was lovely. There’s something deeply comforting about the realm, and it was great seeing more of its regions. Little nods back to the Northern Front, Umbral Elves, and Blood Mages were especially nice, they grounded the story and gave it a satisfying sense of continuity with book one.

And the dragons. Oh man. I loved them. Huge, powerful, noble, sarcastic, with telepathic speech, and somehow very “human” in a dragon way, without just being anthropomorphised mascots. Tinktink in particular stole my heart

The characters were excellent across the board. The main character, a grandmother dwarf over 180 years old, reflecting on her past as an adventurer while embarking on one final journey to lay her fallen friends’ ashes to rest in Dragon Country was genuinely touching. Her granddaughter Hilda (17) was brilliant too. Clearly related, but very much her own person. I really appreciated that Steve didn’t fall into the trap of making the younger character clueless comic relief, she’s capable, thoughtful, and believable, if a little naïve at times.

Tone-wise, it’s cosy cosy cosy, with flashes of peril in flashback memories and a couple of higher-stakes moments that land well. One small personal note: as a non-meat eater, the hunting scenes (duck, rabbit, deer, etc.) did slightly pull me out of the cosy vibe. Totally makes sense in-world, and I wouldn’t deduct points for it, just something that nudged me away from cosy as a reader.

Pacing was great. Slightly stronger than book one I think, with a gentle, plodding rhythm but plenty to hold your attention. I read it in two days without effort.

There were some genuinely touching moments, and I will admit the epilogue briefly terrified me, I thought we were heading toward Hilda retracing her grandmother’s final journey thirty years later. Thankfully, no emotional ambush there.

Overall, this feels like a strong, confident entry in the series. Warm, thoughtful, adventurous, and full of heart.

I was so ready to read a cozy fantasy book, and when I read the dedication page, I knew the timing was perfect!  This book is "dedicated to the grandmas, especially his own"
First, I adore any author that has a grandmotherly type character in the book to share her wisdom.  But even more so now, that I just recently found out that I'll be a grandma in a few months!!!
👵 I was hooked at the dedication!!!   I REALLY enjoyed this book!!!! The grandmother in this book is a FMC with quite the history to share with her family.  Keep in mind this is a fantasy book, so her stories are of adventures that you and I will never face. . . .well the odds are highly unlikely!
🏺One of her dear friends dies and in his dying wishes, he requests that she'll take his ashes to a final resting place in the mountains.  This journey to get him there is thru dangerous areas due to creatures and terrain. . . lands that have been evacuated due to dragons. To make matters even more challenging, her granddaughter, Frida sneaks away from her family to follow her grandmother and ultimately catch up with her to experience this trip with her. It turns out to be a great learning opportunity for Frida as she learns many valuable lessons from her grandma. . . .lessons of survival. . .  foods that are safe to eat, things to pack, how to hunt, fish, and be able to cook the food.  . . and most importantly, how to stay alive. So as to not give any spoilers, this is all I'll say!  Buy the book!  Share it with your family!!! And YES There Be🐉Dragons Here!!!!!!
quote:
She’d heard legends of nature spirits that guarded mountains, forests, and lakes across the realm, but she’d never encountered one until now. They were said to be watchful guardians, protectors of the natural world. “I saw it near the watchtower last night, just the eyes among the fog. Whatever it is, I don’t get the feeling it wants to harm us.”

Looking forward to reading more about Frida and Tilda as part of their adventures of Braids and Quivers.

Have you ever wondered what happens to the great adventurers after their party retires? There Be Dragons Here answers this question as it follows 182 year old Hilda, a Dwarven ranger who has settled down and raised a family and now dotes on her grandchildren. However, after learning her brother-in-arms' last request, she is ready to set off on another journey into the wilds...

This is such a heartfelt, cozy, and magical read that it helped break my reading slump. Hilda is both a fierce and talented warrior and a kind-hearted gram who tells stories and bakes sweet treats. It was brilliant getting to read about such a well-rounded character, especially one who is grey about the beard.

This book is very gentle and retrospective, with Hilda getting to not just recount her past successes to curious children or old friends, but gather new experiences as well. The goal of laying Frey to rest allows her a chance to say goodbye, yet it also helps Hilda realise that their adventures will live on through her memories, stories, journals, and teachings. I really liked this quiet and thoughtful tone, especially when paired with the more chaotic energy of Frida and the hilarity of Morsel the war goat.

There Be Dragons Here is a low stakes tale about growth, grief, and new beginnings. It delves into the characters and setting in an endearing way that had me turning page after page to see what new creature would be encountered next and what new insight Hilda would gain. It was perfect for the start of the year, and I loved how cozy and full of humour it was. If you're looking for a classic quest narrative with next generation training, dragons, and feats of bravery, this is definitely one to check out.

Thank you S.L. Rowland for this ARC!

To start off, I have to say how much I love cozy fantasy. I love reading but cozy fantasy has never let me down and this book is no exception. This book was an utterly fantastic adventure that takes you all over the continent with the coolest characters and while satisfying, it leaves you wanting another book.

This story follows Hilda, the coolest grandma/adventurer/ranger you could ever hope to meet, Frida, her granddaughter and a wanna-be adventurer/ranger and Morsel, the cutest "little" war goat. They set off to spread the ashes of one of Hilda's closest friends all the way into dragon country, because why not? This leads them onto the craziest adventure, running into abandoned ruins and giants and dragons and everything inbetween.

Without spoiling too much, this book was everything I wanted it to be and more. It had the adventure and the cute home-life stuff, it had parts that made me laugh out loud and it had parts that made me tear up. This book just goes to show you that everyone at every age can have adventures but also be happy with their life just as it is.

Now S.L. Rowland, we NEED a book of Hilda's adventures. You teased so many of them, just give the people what they want. Another thing, how dare you end the book like that? I will impatiently waiting for the next book and all the amazing adventures Frida is about to have 😁

Anyways, go read this book and the rest of his too while you're at it if you're looking for an amazing adventure with a cozy twist!! All the stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I’m in my cozy fantasy era!
Give me lush beautiful described landscapes, lovable adventurers, exciting quests and amazing creatures.
This book meets all my demands and then some!
This is a story of Hilda, an adventure past her prime, who has hung up her bow for the quiet life of husband, children and grandbabies. Hilda is suddenly thrust back into on last quest at the behest of her recently deceased adventuring partner, Frey. Hilda decides to take up Frey’s one last wish and scatter his ashes in a mountain in the dragon lands. What Hilda wasn’t anticipating was her headstrong 16 year old granddaughter joining her.
What follows is a story of family bonding, celebrating a lifetime and the amazing memories it helped build and finally realising that aging doesn’t mean the end on adventuring.

This is just the most beautiful story with the most wholesome characters. I think I had a goofy smile on my face the whole time I read because my kids and husband asked what was wrong with me on numerous occasions.

Do you want a book equivalent of snuggling into a warm blanket with a steaming mug of hot chocolate on a freezing night? Then you need to read There Be Dragons Here!

Also DRAGONS!

Favourite Quotes:
One day she’d had smooth skin of youth and hair so red it could have been crafted by the gods, and before she knew it, her hair had grayed and wrinkles told the stories of a thousand laughs and smiles. Life came fast, whether you were ready for it or not.

And here I am in tears. This was so beautiful and perfect. Wow. Hilda is a grandmother and an adventurer - her name is famous across the land for feasts she accomplished in her youth. One day, she receives a request - an old friend’s last wish before he passed was for his ashes to be scattered in that most fearful realm, that of dragons. Hilda does not hesitate - once a ranger, always a ranger - but surprises await when her granddaughter Frida decides to follow her.

S.L. Rowland is my favourite cosy fantasy writer. Their world is so rich and interesting and each book in this series has such heart. This was so much about family - Hilda and Boric, her supportive and loving husband, were so beautiful together and of course Hilda’s bond with Frida is precious - she warns her she is here to learn and in training but soon enough they rely in each other. This novel quietly subverts what has become the main trope of cosy fantasy - Hilda realises straight away she can have adventures filled with awe and come back to her domestic life just the same, that she can have both. She runs towards adventure, not away from it. And then the dragons - I love that we learn so much about them and their lore. This is also a very practical guide to adventuring - rations, hunting, fishing, being on your guard. Some food descriptions made me sigh. I loved this and the epilogue is so good and hints at amazing things. I’m always so grateful to read any new book in this series. S.L. Rowland writes such heartwarming stories. Precious stuff. ❤️

There were in fact dragons here! This was an utterly wonderful cozy fantasy, telling the story of a grandma dwarf, Hilda, embarking on a final quest many years after leaving adventuring behind just to take her old adventure partner’s ashes to be spread amongst the dragons. On her journey, she deals with the emotions of losing a longtime friend as well as discovers what she considers to be her identity.

This story is sweet, throughout the book we hear stories from Hilda’s past, and join her on her quest to honor her friend’s memory. It is a tale of friendship, love, and adventure that will make you laugh, cry, and feel every emotion in between. As one of the characters so perfectly puts it, “It is not the breadth of wings but the fire in the heart”, and all of these characters are so full of fire you will fall in love. Finally, anytime a book has a sassy dragon I am fully on board, and this book does in fact meet that criteria!

I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who likes cozy fantasy, dwarves going on adventures, and dragons! I would also recommend it to anyone who isn’t sure about cozy fantasy and wants to give it a try, I think this book will give you a new favorite genre!

Thank you to S.L. Rowland for the opportunity to read an eARC of this amazing book, can’t wait to order a physical copy for when it releases on January 20th, 2026!

There Be Dragons Here is a cozy fantasy that quietly sneaks up on you and then settles in your chest like a warm fire you don’t want to leave.

This is a story about one last journey and the people who walk it together. Rather than racing from battle to battle, the book lingers on travel, teaching, and the small skills that keep you alive long enough to tell stories later. The mentor/student dynamic at the heart of the book is beautifully done, grounded in patience, honesty, and the understanding that adventure is as much about responsibility as it is bravery.

The dragons are a standout. They are ancient, thoughtful, and shaped by long memory rather than spectacle. Their presence adds wonder and weight without overpowering the story, and the way history, restraint, and choice are woven into their role feels intentional and earned.

This is cozy fantasy with depth. There is warmth, humor, and comfort throughout, but also aging, grief, and the quiet courage of letting go while still moving forward. The pacing is gentle by design, which may not suit readers looking for nonstop action, but it serves the emotional core perfectly.

I rarely give full five-star ratings, but this earns a strong 4.5 for its heart, its patience, and its thoughtful take on what adventure looks like across generations.

"A single label could never encapsulate Hilda Rockfall. She was a grandmother and an adventurer. A homemaker and a ranger. She'd raised hell as well as she'd raised children. All those things were true at once and they hadn't changed just because she was older."

Hilda Rockfall is many things. For 70 years she travelled the land as a skilled ranger for the adventuring party "Stone & Splendor". But for the past 8 decades she has since put down the bow and is now a very proud grandmother, spending her days recounting the tales of her adventures and baking her famous honey crumble. However when the last member of her old party passes away, she is left with one final quest. To deliver their ashes to a final resting place marked on a map. There is a concerning warning next to this marked spot, stating "There be dragons here".....

This is the 4th entry in the "Tales of Aedrea" series so far and currently this is my favourite. Hilda made some a great protagonist. I loved the relationship she has with her granddaughter and the wisdom she is able to impart to her on what makes a good adventurer. A lot of fantasy books will skip over the smaller details regarding what it takes to be a adventurer but I loved the focus on that in this book, seeing all the prep and small things one must take into account before traveling into a unknown land.

I really enjoyed the flashbacks (framed as Hilda telling a tale) that helped add more depth to old adventuring party, helping us understanding why she is so willing to go on this final quest for her dear friend.

This is cozy fantasy at it finest.

If there were ever a "cozy quest" genre, There Be Dragons Here would be spearheading the list. Hilda Rockfall, a retired dwarf adventurer, spends her days with her 22 grandkids, the love of her life, and her homemade honey crumble. Her former questmates have all passed away and, upon returning from their leader Frey's funeral, Hilda is given one final quest. Accompanied by a war goat named Morsel, Hilda journeys into the dragonlands to grant Frey's last wish.

I loved every bit of this story, and I could not put it down. S.L. Rowland's writing evokes stunning imagery, the characters are well-rounded and use common sense, and the pacing flows well. As Hilda and her troupe experience small adventures, Hilda muses about her past, her motivations, and how society perceives the elderly. At one point, she says that adventures are "ninety-five percent humdrum and only five percent action." The vast majority of modern fantasy focus on the 5% action, but S.L. Rowland's writing shines the spotlight on the "humdrum" of the other 95%. And it's wonderful!

I think I was a lucky reader when I received this gorgeous book. Every time I discover a new cozy fantasy, I feel amazing.

This time I got the chance to meet Hilda, an ex-adventurer dwarf who encounters a lot in her 182 years and can tell a new story every time she meets her grandchildren. She decides to go on her last adventure as a favor for a friend and from here every day came with another surprise.

“A single label could never encapsulate Hilda Rockfall. She was a grandmother and an adventurer. A homemaker and a ranger. She’d raised hell as well as she’d raised children.”

One of her granddaughters, Frida, follows her steps. It was such a heartwarming adventure, with cozy, nostalgic or life threatening moments, but also with some supernatural creatures, such as their companion (the war goat) or dragons.

It was so nice to experience such a lovely trip and see how Frida is eager to learn everything she can from her grandmother, a renowned adventurer.

“Between the three of us, this might be a proper adventure.”

Massive thanks first to S.L. Rowland for the privilege of reading an ARC of this book. All thoughts/opinions are my own.

Returning to Aedrea is like a warm hug when you desperately need it. Cozy fantasy will forever be my favourite genre but this book has become one of my favourites!

The writing is wonderful with a great mix of seriousness and humour. Shout out to Tinktink and Frida for some wonderful back and forth! There is a good balance of action and coziness make the story an absolute delight to read.

Hilda is the type of grandmother everyone wants - full of tales and baked goods but also tough as nails. Getting to experience her journey was a delight. And the actual story of having her fulfill the last wishes of a dear friend struck a chord and made me all warm and fuzzy inside (also not going to lie that Hilda’s class made me happy as it is the same class as my beloved D&D character haha).

Now, I’m off to bake some Honey Crumble and re-read the whole series!

Hilda receives one final request from her former party member, Frey: to scatter his ashes at a location marked on an old map, accompanied by the foreboding words, “There Be Dragons Here.” Believing her adventuring days are long behind her, Hilda sets out once more—only this time, she isn’t alone.

Joined by her granddaughter, the journey becomes more than a quest. It’s a testament to the love that binds generations and the lessons we pass on through courage, memory, and shared experience. What unfolds is an adventure rich with heart, reflection, and quiet wisdom.

This is truly a story for the ages.

I loved this cozy fantasy read and found it engaging and entertaining. It was a wonderful tale, reminding me that adventures can happen at any age!
