The Rational Nationalist: Moving Beyond Partisanship Toward Prosperity

Rate this book
Harnessing Human Nature for National Strength

Embrace the vision of Rational Nationalism—a philosophy that ignites patriotic fervor while grounding policy in empirical evidence and unwavering logic. Discover how individual rights and national duty can coexist, how disputes among well-meaning nationalists can be resolved, and how each citizen can contribute to the nation’s ascent.

In a world grappling with modern contradictions, The Rational Nationalist presents a revolutionary approach to governance. It confronts our evolutionary heritage, not by denying it, but by harnessing its energy for the collective good. The book dissects the evolutionary pressures that forged our dual nature—our cognitive prowess and primal impulses—revealing how these instincts often clash with contemporary life.

Lee Ellis offers us a framework for navigating this inherent conflict, demonstrating how to use reason to sculpt a society that leverages our strengths and mitigates our weaknesses. It explores the crucial role of law and morality as dynamic forces guiding human behavior toward optimal outcomes, and delves into the primal roots of political competition, where group identity and self-interest shape nations.

Through a historical lens, the book examines the rise of Anglo-American success, arguing that their systems, however imperfect, fostered human flourishing. The Rational Nationalist urges us to transcend conventional thinking and forge a future where our most powerful impulses propel us toward a more just and prosperous society.

I read The Rational Nationalist as an attempt to bring structure and philosophical grounding to conversations that are usually driven by emotion and polarization. The book moves slowly and methodically, laying out definitions, assumptions, and distinctions before advancing its broader arguments.

What interested me most was the sustained focus on group behavior, incentives, and human nature. The discussions of law versus morality and individual versus collective interest felt especially relevant to current political discourse. Even when the conclusions were debatable, the process of getting there was clear and intentional.

This is a dense and demanding read. It is not written to persuade quickly or entertain casually. It requires attention and patience, and it often raises more questions than it resolves. I found myself pausing frequently to think through the implications rather than pushing ahead.

This book will likely resonate most with readers who enjoy political philosophy, systems thinking, and arguments that prioritize coherence over consensus.

In this age of decline and transformation, there’s an understandable clamour for ideologies that make sense of the chaos. Nationalism is one such ideology making a comeback, disguised as patriotism and dressed up in psuedo-intellectual language. ’The Rational Nationalist’ is a prime example of this resurgence, and its brazen promotion of nationalism is a portent of things to come.
