I can’t leave Ryan Davies behind any more than I can my own shadow.
It’s been ten years since Ryan turned his back on me and walked away. A decade of living my life without him. Dreaming of him. Longing for him. Craving him.
But I made a promise to him that night. A vow that one day, I’d be back to claim him. Because he is my shadow. Mine - and I won’t ever let him forget it.
It’s all boiled down to this moment. There’s nothing standing in the way of our future happiness.
Aside from Ryan’s fiancée.
I’ll sacrifice anything to have him in my life again. I’m going to remind him that love burns brightest in the dark. No-one can make Ryan happier than I can.
All I have to do is prove it to him before he stands at the end of the aisle.
Waiting for someone else.
I’ll wait in the shadows until he’s ready to accept what I already know.
That we belong together.
Shadows Never Leave is the final book in the Shadow Duet. It must be read after Shadows Never Lie. This contemporary, high-angst MM romance ends in a very satisfying HEA.
Lark lives with her family in southern England. An obsessive romance fan, she loves nothing more than a Happily Ever After – especially if there’s a good plot and a hefty amount of spice along the way. When she’s not reading or writing, she can be found hiding from adult life in escape rooms, travel and the MCU. As a Bi woman with OCD, Lark is a fervent supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community and an advocate for mental health awareness and support.
It’s been not even twenty-four hours since I finished book one. All this pain, all the suffering. *god I just live for the relationship drama of fictional characters.
Okay, but here’s why I couldn’t do more than four stars for this one even though the tension and thrill of the relationship between the MCs was just as good as in book #1. It’s the whole storyline with Ryan’s fiancée Kate. I’m sure the author could’ve found other ways to inflict the same level of drama between Dom and Ryan—actually, I’d even have some suggestion. But Kate being there to begin with, to me married to Ryan in only four weeks time but also being in the very same situation as Ryan (it was obvious right from the beginning when I read the words estranged stepbrother, trust me, I’m not even spoilering anything here) it was just so dumb and unnecessary and dragged out until the very end. *ugh I can’t even.
Also, if you ask me, the story could’ve been resolved in a few pages less (like a hundred or so).
Still, Ryan’s and Dom’s HEA is well deserved and only shows once more that communication is key and teenagers are idiots. I loved Frank’s redemption arc as well as Max’s. I’m honestly curious if we will see these characters again someday. Lark Taylor has been very vague on that.
This book was so underwhelming that I ended up feeling irritated with the author, because the relationship had so much potential and could’ve been written so much better than this. I had such high hopes for this sequel.
I was so tired by the repetitive back and forth conversations between Dom and Ryan. I even found myself skipping chapters here and there. Also, Dominic’s reason for not reaching out to Ryan was ridiculous. It just wasn’t convincing enough for me to believe someone would stay away and avoid contacting the person they love for 10 years. I wasn’t buying that excuse at all.
That said, there were still a few moments between them that I genuinely liked, and some of the declarations definitely made my heart skip a beat.
3⭐️ This is one of those books that had so much potential to absolutely wreck me in the best way… but ultimately didn’t quite stick the landing.
One quote really stood out to me: “You can’t hold onto anger for the sake of it… it’ll eat you from the inside out.”
And while that’s fair, you also can’t force someone to let go of that anger through manipulation and expect it to feel real. Forgiveness isn’t something that can be cornered into existence, it has to come naturally. When a story doesn’t allow space for that anger to be processed, the healing feels rushed instead of earned.
That’s where this fell apart for me.
After a decade of hurt, betrayal, and complete separation, the reconciliation between Ryan, Dominic, and Max didn’t feel earned, it felt coerced. The timeline spans roughly a month, and I just couldn’t believe that ten years of emotional pain and unresolved trauma could realistically be worked through in that time, especially given how deeply Ryan’s hurt is established across both books.
What made it more frustrating was how often Ryan’s autonomy was ignored. He’s a grown man, yet he’s repeatedly placed in situations where his choices are overridden or manipulated, by Dominic, Max, and even Frank. Instead of being given space to process and choose, he’s pushed into proximity and emotional confrontations he didn’t consent to. At times, it felt less like reconciliation and more like a coordinated effort to push him toward forgiveness before he was ready.
And that distinction matters; there’s a difference between choosing to let go and being worn down into it.
Because of that, key moments, apologies, accountability, rebuilding trust, don’t carry the weight they should. They feel rushed or overshadowed by physical intimacy and grand gestures that don’t fully align with the characters’ history.
I will say, the emotional payoff at the end did land more than I expected, which is why this didn’t rate lower for me. The connection is there, and the foundation for something powerful absolutely exists, it just needed more time and care to truly work.
In the end, this wasn’t about whether they should end up together, but whether I believed they had done the work to get there. And for me, that answer was not so much.
I received a complimentary, advanced copy of this book from the author, and this is my voluntary, honest review.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I enjoyed book one more but this was still great and this duet was such a worthwhile read! They’re soul mates. I love Dom & Ryan so so so very much.🥹❤️
What the hell happened? This is the first time I've had such a crash and burn reading the second book in a duology.
Book 1 was a solid 3.5 stars with plenty of painful angst and suffering, and then book 2 just went off the rails trying to do 30 different things rather than focusing on what was needed: grovelling and healing.
Why was there so much focus on the side characters, are those being setup for future books? It's distracting and it ends up feeling like padding.
Add that to wackadoodle side plots (what the fuck was going on with the step-siblings and why do we care?), conversations about past hurts and why I can't trust you with my heart repeated ad nauseam, and all of that buildup from book 1 ended up lost in the chaos.
Longer RTC.

I was SO eager to dive into this second installment after the first one that I immediately started reading this and read basically the first half in several hours.
I zoomed through both of these installments of this duet. I was just hooked from page one. I will say this duet is some of this author's best, if not her best work so far.
Ryan and Dominic have now gone a decade without each other, but Dom is back in town to get Ryan back.
Now Ryan, he doesn't make it easy, as it should be. Dom did screw up big time and anyone would be scared to trust Dom's feelings as real after what went down with them as teenagers. Ryan definitely needs time to be angry and upset and time to learn to trust Dom again and see that Dom is here for good this time, that he's not going anywhere.
Ryan also, unfortunately....is engaged.
That's where the cheating comes in. More on that under the tag:
Thankfully, both Ryan and Kate have a mutual break up in the end, with no real hard feelings. They both have the love their life who they truly want, and were mostly using the other to try to run from that, to try to be "normal" and "healthy."
Dom is back after he "grew up" and is ready to be the man Ryan needs. He didn't want to come back too soon and screw it all up again, so that's why 10 years go by. Perhaps seemingly too late, as 10 years is a LONG time and Ryan is very very angry and stubborn and resistant - and supposed to marry someone else
But Dom is determined to get his man back no matter what. He's come back grown up, but perhaps not exactly the healthiest still. He'll stop at nothing to get his man, and he's willing to wait forever for Ryan to be ready to be with him again if needed.
Ryan, for all his protests though, is still head over heels in love with Dominic and it's obvious. He's just very very scared of taking a chance, of potentially getting his heart decimated again.
But as Ryan and Dom get closer and closer in present day, the harder it is for Ryan to resist him. Because the truth is, he and Dom both fucked up in the past. Dom ultimately did the most, but Ryan messed up too, and contributed to their break up in a way as well.
But a lot of that could have been forgiven for Ryan, if Dom hadn't left later that same night, with Max of all people. That's what's really sticking in Ryan's craw all these years later, the hurt he really can't get past. Also, that Dom never contacted him while he was away, which is completely understandable.
Max, for his part, is a changed man in this. I think he should have needed to do more to earn Ryan's forgiveness, but what we got was a good starting point. He explains his past behavior and exactly why he hated and resented Ryan back then. It was still stupid, and Ryan didn't do anything to deserve Max's irrational hatred back then, but Max begins to work at being better in this.
Given that we're TOTALLY getting a book (or books?) about him and Xander, Ryan's BFF, it's good that his redemption starts in this book because I'd hate to hate the MC of a book. That certainly will be interesting if and when those two get a book. Would always love to Ryan and Dom again as well.
These two and their HEA was EXTREMELY hard fought for, but it was so worth it in the end to see how happy they are together in the end. These two were truly meant to be together and I love love LOVED every single second of their journey together, even the hard, angsty parts.
The sexual tension was just as good in this installment, if not more so as well. Dom clearly, outwardly and openly wanting Ryan and Ryan doing everything he could do deny feelings for Dom, which so clearly failed at every turn.
This is clearly a second chance romance - and I love them, personally - so if that isn't your thing, this duet isn't for you. But you'll be missing out big time if you skip this duet, I think. It was just amazingly well done.
This author just gets better and better, I can't get enough of her books. Oh and to think that this is set in the same universe as her other series with the Devil's sons and angels and Were's and all that, as Ryan and the others are big fans of Caffeine Daydreams, the band from another series of hers, and that band also exists in the same universe as her supernatural series', so that means Ryan and Dom, Max and Xander, all of these character live in the same universe as supernatural creatures. How wild.
Definitely, HIGHLY recommend this duet, I can't sing its praises enough.
Can't wait for more from this author, and this ever expanding world of hers.
Youpi ! I finished the book 🤭 and honestly, I loved it so much. Dominic and Ryan, my precious babies, are going to miss me so much 😭💓
Honestly, the relationship between Frank and Ryan was everything 💗 the way Frank treated him like his own son was so touching to see. I absolutely loved Frank’s development throughout the story and how important he became in Ryan’s life. Seeing them get along, spend time together, and genuinely care for each other warmed my heart so much.
And Xander… honestly one of my favorite characters in the whole book. I adored him 😭 he’s funny, caring, and always gives Ryan good advice. Their friendship is so precious, I loved them together so much. Xander really is the best 🤭💓
As for Dominic and Ryan, even after all the obstacles and pain they went through, the love they had for each other was so strong and beautiful. I’m so happy they finally got their happy ending together 😝💖
But honestly… I wouldn’t say no to a book about Xander and Max 👀🤭
Anyway, I highly recommend both books. They were incredible 😭📚💓
10 year separation bt book 1 and 2. MC Dom gets MC Ryan's art and name tattooed on himself, intending to win him back someday. Meanwhile he's sleeping with many, many placeholder disposable hookups. Ryan's name is tatooed over his heart so that his hookups will know he belongs to someone else and loves them.
No thanks. That would never win Me over. Ryan is engaged when they reunite 10 years later, as well. Although if Dom/the tattoo guy is the one that left/broke it off, then good for Ryan. Get it, man.
I have loved many of the author's other books though, so if that kind of angst is your thing, this duet might be great for you. Very entertaining writer. Happy reading!
When I started this book, I remember thinking, damn, why is this 400 pages long? The answer, unfortunately, was not surprising: it shouldn’t have been. Good editing would have left me far less irritated.
I don’t inherently hate time gaps between MCs. But ten years? An 18-year-old and a 28-year-old are practically different species. And for all the angst around the separation, the explanation for a full decade of no contact was absurdly flimsy. This book takes the bad communication trope and stretches it until it becomes the entire plot.
And DAMN did Ryan harp on it.
Look, Dom’s behavior when he left, and for the subsequent ten years, was awful. Groveling was necessary. But at some point, Ryan, you have to shit or get off the pot. Another reviewer said Ryan reminded them of an MF romance heroine and I realized that was exactly my frustration. The indecision. The endless circling. The woe is me. It dragged to the point where it ruined the book for me.
By about 75%, I was skimming. If I’m being honest, I technically DNF’d because I had become so annoyed that I stopped caring.
Also, little details got me irrationally riled up. So, in today’s episode of Get a Fucking Beta Reader:
Dom, who left at 18 with apparently nothing, mentions how nice it is to get his belongings out of storage when moving into his apartment. What belongings? What was in storage all those years? Emotional baggage? The continuity gremlin in my brain would not let this go.
Then there’s the explanation Max gives for Dom’s decade of silence:
“He didn’t contact you because you ended things. He assumed that meant completely… He knew how much he was hurting you.”
…Huh? He avoided contacting him for ten years because Ryan told him to (in the heat of the moment) BUT he knew he’d hurt him? Make it make sense.
And maybe this is nitpicky, but I found the military trauma portrayal a bit over the top at times. I absolutely do not mean to minimize what soldiers experience in war, truly. But the way repeated tours and losses were discussed occasionally felt disproportionate, almost written with the emotional framing of a different conflict entirely. The UK lost 138 soldiers in Iraq, it wasn’t Vietnam.
The side plot with Katie didn’t bother me because I hate when abandoned fiancées in MM romance exist only to nobly pine. Let the woman move on! But Rafe’s indignation about it drove me insane considering he was dicking down Katie while Ryan was doing the same dance with Dom. The hypocrisy was infuriating.
Overall, this was a giant disappointment because I think there was a decent story buried in here somewhere. But between both books, hundreds of pages could have been cut. I think this duology would have worked much better condensed into one tighter ~350-page book.
Dom + Ryan 🖤 Second chance | Groveling | It's Always Been You | Caretaking
Letters letters letters. I'm a sucker for letters.
"I’m sorry for everything. I love you. Your Dominic PS Please put your happiness first"
😭😭😭

2.5 ⭐️ Disappointed after finishing the book. We were more told, than showed all the supposed changes in their characters and maturity.
After the ending of the first one I expected a lot of grovel from both Dominic and Max. From Dominic we got grovel and asking for forgiveness for most of the book, we could see he was more mature than in the first one and he changed. From Max I feel we barely got something, there was a single real and honest discussion between Ryan and Max and then he barely was mentioned. I expected their twin relationship to be a major point in this book and to see how they work to recover it and become closer, but did not get it at all, which surprised and disappointed me.
I wanted to see them actually talk about their lives, what they did for that 10 year gap they did not communicate at all, to get to know their adult version of themselves and not remain just with the knowledge from when they were kids.
Dominic had a lot of moments when he kind of took the choice out ir Ryan's hands, exactly what Ryan hated to be done to him by Dom and Max in the first book. Dom inserted himself in every aspect of Ryan's life in the 'name of love' and 'getting him back', with no regards on how Ryan feels about it, even if he repeatedly said he doesn't like it.
Another thing that pissed me off was that for most of the book the discussions and reactions and emotions were just so repetitive. I know it was vital to discuss about what happened when they were kids and how to move past it, but I feel they never moved past it. Every chapter was a reference to what happened when they were younger and broke up, how Dominic left and how much Ryan suffered and can't be together again. I was expecting to see actual work towards a new relationship, them getting to know each other again or better, them going on dates, the wooing each other. And don't get me started on the plot with Kate and Rafe. First of all it felt too fake Ryan's incoming marriage with Kate, how obvious it was they were not making a good couple, how Kate barely appeared in this book, how just when Ryan wanted to broke up with her, he discovered Kate was actually cheating him with Rafe
I think it would have had a lot more impact showing their more mature and improved relationship and communication style if this whole marriage was not added to the book and the focus would have been the relationship between Ryan and Dominic.
As the 2nd in a duet, this book fell way short of the epicness of the 1st. The vibe was jarring when reading back-to-back. Felt like an entirely different author. The situation was drawn out, & it felt like nothing happened. We (readers) were in a waiting room for hundreds of pages, while the bride & groom never had ANY interactions. It was bizarre, redundant, & slow with what would ultimately happen beyond obvious.
It felt as if Ryan was a different character. His narration reminded me of an indecisive heroine in an MF novel. The type of woman we MM readers complain about mainstream romance novel heroines.
Ryan dragged his feet simply to extend the novel, when we ALL (readers & characters alike) knew what would happen. I mean, so what that he was engaged? We saw his fiancé for 2 pages, where she was jonesing for her stepbrother. We ALL saw that from space. Because of this, there was little plot to work with, all the plot stayed in the first, epic novel.
The voice was far different than in the 1st book. The situations, reactions... for phuck's sake, Ryan even mutters "men" in exasperation like a woman would, to the point Dom & Xan replied "did he forget he's a man?"
Did the author?
Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. We just read the first book. We were THERE. We don't need a recap of the past EVERY FN CONVERSATION with NO forward momentum. After reading the first, I never expected the second to fall this flat. Maybe the first should have just been extended with a proper epilogue vs hundreds of pages of dragging book 1 thru book 2.
Max & Ryan, that was under-developed. He never even brought up why he stepped up around home, not to be the golden child.
Kate & the "piano" with a gun... is this setting up a mafia MF novel or what? Why else was ANY of that in the novel? Ryan's angst over his promise, when that is the point of engagement vs marriage. So it can be broken before ink dries on legal papers. 2 ppl who were absolutely indifferent to one another. What an odd choice for the non-plot, but not as odd as the gun scene.
Honestly, I kept waiting for Max, Dom, Xan, & other characters to stalk Kate & prove to Ryan that she was cheating long before the fishing cabin. That would have been epic, where the rest of the novel was rebuilding their relationship, not dragging an impending wedding thar we ALL knew would never take place as the angst.
Sadness. I Lived & Breathed the first. I'll try another novel by this author to see if this is just a misstep.
This was a great follow-up to book 1 and I’m glad we got them so close together. I knew we would get groveling from Dom and some unhinged behavior and I enjoyed every moment of it! Not only was the groveling great but the new level of communication between these two was as well. I loved that Ryan made Dom work for what he wanted but what made it even better was how honest they were being with each other. Even with the hard stuff.
I appreciate when it came to Max that we got insight on his behavior and that he also had to put in work to begin mending his relationships with Dom and Ryan. It felt a little more honest considering what they went through even as teenagers that they didn’t immediately revert to better times just because apologies were given.
I love Xander and wouldn’t mind if he and Max became a thing. He was a great support system for Ryan and I think he could help Max see the error of his ways.
The character development was great, I enjoyed the storyline and the writing.
I think the engagement and Kate setback was dragged on for too long that it made Dominic and Ryan’s reunion lackluster. Ryan KNOWSSSSSS Kate does not care about him that much and was being weird and suspicious, just fucking end it for both of you. And the weird fucking scene that he walked in on and we had to read dear GOD take it away. Unnecessary and so weird
I know Ryan needed time, so why not give it to him by having him end the engagement sooner and work with Dominic on becoming friends/partners again throughout a longer period of time. Idk I just don’t think with Kate clearly not even liking him let alone loving him, it wasn’t worth making that the whole thing holding him back
Things also got very repetitive and the same issue and convo was brought up every chapter. I get that that is what we were working on and growing from .. but can we do SOMETHING ??
I thought it was funny anytime Dominic would show up at random moments that he definitely wasn’t originally part of. I know some ppl didn’t love that, but I thought it was pretty on brand for his character.
I appreciated Max and Ryan having a bit of time in the book to be around each other and grow a bit as well. They’ll need a bunch of time and growth, but glad we got to see a tiny piece of that happening at least outside of all Ryan’s issues with Dom
Overall I wish some things would’ve been done very differently. It’s not necessarily a bad book or follow up, but I was just wanting much more from it and it had some moments that I found unnecessary or weird
4.25⭐️ The second book in Taylor’s newest duology didn’t disappoint! In this book, we see Ryan and Dom as adults, and now they find their way back to each other after 10 years of silence. This is truly the story of their hard-fought HEA!
You’ll get: -second chance -yearning -cheating (not between MCs) -redemption
I did really enjoy these books! This book did have some repetition of the same themes again and again, which was necessary given the subject matter, however, it was a little tedious at points. Other than that, this was such a well done second chance book. There was a lot of great yearning, a lot of drama, and though the characters are flawed, it was still so enjoyable to read their love story.
This is my first time reading something by this author that wasn’t a paranormal romance, and it did really get me interested in wanting to read her other contemporary stories! There’s also good buildup to a potential related book with some side characters from the story that I am so excited to read if it ever happens!
I LOVED this duet so very much!! I love having all the emotions when I read and this one definitely delivers! It was a hard battle to get through for these two but they finally got their act together and it was beautiful! I can’t recommend this author enough and run don’t walk to read this duet!
This conclusion. The groveling. The chasing. The relentless remembering, begging Ryan to forgive. Dominic Walker was absolutely positively down bad.
This duet was tragically beautiful in the way that all first loves are. Right person wrong time.
• second chance • idiots to lovers back to idiots to lovers • twin brother's best friend
This duet carries so much hurt. The cabin scenes, the patio scenes... they're lancing the wounds, draining the toxicity. But they ache to read.
• the letters • Frank's 180 • climbing up porches • Caffeine Daydreams' Something
The Shadow Duet is amazing. Lark delivers a story full of first loves, hurts, soulmates, jealousy, miscommunication, and forgiveness & growing up. Lark always delivers an HEA, she just likes to twist the knife a bit.
Both books are out now! SHADOWS NEVER LIE & SHADOWS NEVER LEAVE. This duet is 5 stars for me.
Yep, part two of this duet sealed it for me. This is such an emotionally beautiful, unforgettable read.
We’re back in the present and the pain is still so raw. Ryan has spent ten years building his walls, holding onto that hurt. And Dominic? He shows up with his heart in his hands, ready to grovel, beg, and fight for even the smallest chance.
These books are so deeply emotional, I’m not even joking, have tissues ready. The way their history bleeds into every interaction, the tension, the longing… it’s heavy in the best way. Their love feels raw, messy, and completely real. The kind of love that endures.
And Dominic just knowing his Shadow?? The quiet acts, the “I know you better than anyone” kind of love? UGH 🥹
This book has:
* second chance romance done RIGHT * grovelling that actually hurts (and heals) * forced proximity (I’ll show up every day until you love me again 😭) * caretaking moments that will break you * two stubborn men who refuse to let go * so much angst, healing, and emotional payoff * a love that feels epic and hard earned
I would genuinely go to war for these two. Such a powerful, emotional conclusion to an incredible duet. I won’t be over them anytime soon.
3.5-4 stars, rounded. Sue me, but I kind of enjoyed this more than book 1 😶🌫️ don’t get me wrong: the first book was full of tropes I love, but their love was juvenile…high school (literally). Book 2 was honestly hilarious, but not in the usual sense. There weren’t explicitly funny jokes or anything, but it was humorous seeing Ryan’s internal conflict regarding Dominic. He’d say one thing but feel a different way. And vice versa. It was also funny when Dom would show up randomly and mess with Ryan’s sanity. I literally read this book in public whenever there was time to…that’s how invested I was.
Ryan was EXTREMELY annoying here, but for some reason, it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment. I understood his distrust in Dom, but the push-and-pull and constant denial was frustrating. Dom was possessive and protective and grew up a lot. He definitely developed as a character, but he also devolved into a doormat. It’s understandable as to why he became that way, but brother STAND UP🗣️
The snippets of Xander interacting with Max were also entertaining because I sensed some tension and have a prediction…I hope said prediction comes to fruition (bars).
I can’t really be disappointed, because I knew the direction it would go in from the first book.
It was hard to believe that Dom really stayed in love with Ryan for 10 years, and thought about him all the time. Especially when they only dated for 3 months. Same with Ryan.
I just wish they had met again by chance, or a family reunion, or something of that nature. Then all those feelings and thoughts about each other slowly start to come back.
That being said, I really enjoyed the first half. They were clearly very in love with each other, and Dominick was very good to him. Though It could’ve been 75 pages shorter.
The second half of this book...my God. That was amazing. Loved loved loved Ryan and Dom. Although some of the things felt quite repetitive and I skimmed a lot, it still was a beautiful story with lovely characters. I'm dying to see if there's anything going on between Max and Xander though.
I loved both the book's names and Dom's reason for the name 'Shadow'. I loveddddddddd it ♥️ Cheering for Frank and June too. I want to read Xander's book real bad now.
MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD:
He smirked lazily, leaning against the doorframe. "Hello. And who are you?"
I clenched my jaw instinctively. Xander wasn't going to make this easy.
" I think you know the answer to that."
Xander's smirk only grew. "I don't know that I do. After all, I've met everyone important in Ryan's life, but I've never met you, so..."
Prick. "I was in the military. I would've been here if I could."
"Liar." Xander tilted his head. "I was in the military too. Made it back during every shore leave. Ask me how hard it was to do that."
"Speaking of Dominic," Xander said, gesturing at the soup in my hands.
"Why don't you take that from him?"
The pot had barely left my fingers when Xander grinned widely at me.
" I've waited a long time to do this."
I didn't even have time to blink before his fist collided with my jaw. The hit was hard enough to send me flying back into the wall and sliding to the floor.
"Xander," Ryan roared, his voice breaking with the remnants of his flu.
"What the fuck, man?"
My head was still spinning as Ryan put the soup down and dropped to his knees. The next thing I knew, his hands were gently cupping my face.
"Dom, are you okay?"
I was more than okay. Ryan was voluntarily touching me. He was touching me. I never wanted him to stop. I'd let Xander punch me a thousand more times if this was the end result. "I'm fine. I deserved it."
"Damn right you did," Xander said, his easy smile a stark contrast to his words. "But it's okay. All is forgiven now."
Xander smiling softly. "I think Dominic and I are going to get on great."
"I think so too."
"Max, on the other hand." Xander whistled. "Fair warning, I won't be holding back with him."
I pictured it and chuckled. "Can I be there when you're introduced?”
Ryan whipped his head around to stare at me. "So you can stop it happening?"
"No, Shadow, so I can watch.”
Xander barked out a laugh. "Yeah, I was right. We're going to get on like a house on fire."
"I mean it, man. Hurt Ryan again and I'll fucking end you. Got it?"
"Got it. I'm not going to tell you again that I won't though. I'll prove it by being here every day for him."
Xander glared at me darkly. "Make sure you do that."
"It's more likely that I'm going to be the one getting hurt at the end of this."
"And I won't lose a wink of sleep over it." Xander's lip curled back in a sneer. "It'll be no less than you deserve."
"I agree."
"What?" I grunted.
Xander's eyes briefly flashed over me. "He does have all those gorgeous muscles. We might as well put them to good use."
Ryan's face darkened. He reached out and pinched Xander's side. From how Xander winced, he hadn't held back. "Keep checking him out and you'll be sleeping on the fucking sofa."
I turned away before either of them could see the smile on my lips. The smile that only widened at Xander's drawled response. "Don't worry, Ryan. I know the mythical and majestic Dominic is all yours."
There was a smacking noise from behind me that had me biting back a laugh. Yeah, Xander and I were going to be great friends.
"A bit of discomfort won't kill me, Shadow. I've slept in worse places. And it was worth it if it kept you safe and happy."
My mind flashed back to two nights ago, when Ryan had cried out in a moment of delirium. How he hadn't settled until I was within touching distance. When he'd whispered six words that had almost broken me.
"Don't leave me again, Dom. Stay."
I knew it was probably just the fever talking, but it hadn't stopped me kneeling by his bed for hours, stroking his hair. All the while, I'd whispered the same reassurance, over and over again.
“I'm never leaving you again, Shadow."
"I intend on being on good terms with everyone you care about, Ry."
"In that case, you really need to go and see your dad."
I reeled back a step. "What? How is Frank important to you?"
"Guess you'll find out when you go and visit him."
"You can't be serious." I stared at him in disbelief as pain cleaved through my chest. "I can't believe you're asking this of me. You know what he did. You know, better than anyone. How can you do this?"
Suddenly, Ryan was right in front me, cupping my jaw in his hands. "I know. I do. But can you trust me? I'd never ask you to see someone who'd cause you pain. I wouldn't send you back there if I believed with even an ounce of my soul that he'd hurt you again. Trust me?"
I searched his guileless eyes and gave a hollow laugh. "Fuck, and I thought I played dirty, Shadow."
He didn't smile, just gripped my face with the same fierceness he did my heart. "This will be good for you in the long run. I promise."
"And if it's not?"
"It will be," he said firmly, stroking my jaw. "Trust me, Dominic. Please?"
"Drunk me decided to take a nap on the tracks. Turns out rails don't make very good pillows...especially if you misjudge how far away they are and slam your head into one."
Dom's chair scraped noisily across the floor. I jerked my head up to find him dropping into the seat next to mine. He pulled my chair so it faced his and cupped my face. Moisture shone in his eyes. "Shadow, what the fuck were you thinking?"
"I wasn't," I said, my voice cracking. “I was hurting, Dom. So fucking much. Everyone else was out celebrating their results, excited about the future. But me? All I knew was that you wouldn't be in mine. I couldn't cope with it. I just wanted the pain to go away for a few hours."
"Oh, baby.” Dom tugged me forward until my knees were between his thighs. His arms encircled me, holding me tight. "I'm sorry. I'm so fucking sorry. It kills me to know you were hurting. That I hurt you that much."
Xan's grin sharpened as his gaze slid to Max. "Aren't you going to introduce us?"
"No." I took a deliberate step in front of Max. "Behave, Xander."
His eyes glinted. He hadn't looked away from my twin for a second. "Where's the fun in that?"
"It's great to meet you." Max said politely from behind me. "Ryan tells me you're his best friend."
"I am." I groaned inwardly at the dangerous note Xan's voice had adopted. I'd seen this play out often enough to know what was coming. "He tells me everything."
"Xander..." I said warningly. He didn't so much as blink.
"That's good." Max was oblivious to the danger he was in. "I'm glad he's got someone in his corner."
Just then, Dom's arm snaked out and he grabbed my wrist. A sharp tug had me falling against his chest, his strong arms encircling me.
"What the fuck?" I shoved against him, but he didn't let go. Simply turned me so I was facing everyone else. "Let me go, Dom."
"Sorry, Shadow," Dom said. "But this is going to happen regardless. I'd rather not have you getting caught in the crossfire."
Max frowned. "What's going to happen?"
"Wait." Xander carefully took the glass from Max's fingers and put it on the table. "Let me take that from you." He straightened up with a smirk. "Just like I said to Dominic, I've waited a long fucking time to do this."
I closed my eyes just as Xander smashed his fist into my twin's face.
Max grumbled but did as I said. "That was you pulling your punch? What are you, a boxer or something?"
Xander shot him a cocky grin. "Three-time winner at the Royal Marines Corps Boxing Championships."
Dom let out a low whistle. "That's fucking impressive, man."
"Marines," Max drawled, a hard glint in the one eye that was visible. "Tell me, what instrument did you play?"
"Original," Xander said. "Not that I expect anything better from a squaddie who probably hid behind his superiors all his life."
Max growled, but before he could move, Dom barked out a word. "Pinecone, Max."
"That's what you said to Mimic at the party."
"It's their code word," Xander said. "Something innocuous that tells them to fall in line or basically stop whatever they're doing."
Frank wasn't beside me.
Dominic was.
"Surprise?" he said, having the grace to look sheepish as he joined the motorway.
I gaped at him, my brain not having had sufficient enough caffeine to keep up. "What the fuck?"
"Figured we could use some quality time together," Dom said breezily, his eyes on the road. "You're on a deadline, after all."
"Where's your dad? Did you just abandon him there?"
"Course not," Dom said. "He's in Max's car being taken home."
"Oh my fucking god. You two set this up."
"Like father, like son," Dom said drily.
I glared at his profile, hating how fast my heart was beating. From anger, that's all. "Take me home."
"Why would I do that, Shadow?"
"You can't be serious."
"I'm always serious about you."
I thumped my head gently against the headrest. "Dom, you're kidnapping me."
He laughed. "For a week's holiday in a beautiful location."
"Stop overthinking. We've got a long drive ahead, so why don't you find us some music to listen to?"
I grumbled as I picked up my phone again, opening it to the playlist I'd been building for me and Frank. A genius idea occurred to me. Dom thought feelings were important? Well, perhaps it was time I showed him exactly how he'd made me feel.
.......
"WHO KNEW there were that many songs about heartbreak and betrayal?” Dom said as we pulled into the services two hours later. "Some seriously angsty shit too. Is that really what you're into?"
"Being trapped in a car with you inspired me," I said sweetly.
"No more music?" Dominic asked innocently.
"No. We can sit in silence."
"Doesn't sound fun."
"Good," I said pettily, glaring out the window. "Be miserable."
"Here's your room," Dom pouted at the neatly made bed. "What?"
"Thought we'd be sharing," Dom muttered "An only-one-bed situation."
"This isn't a rom-com."
"Maybe the heat will go out." Dom waggled his brows at me. "We might have to...snuggle."
"I'd rather freeze to death," I said drily.
"You'll soon change your tune."
"And you wanted to tell me that...but I'd already left."
My heart cracked at the pain in his voice. The anguish that was mirrored in my own chest. I reached up to touch him. "Dom-"
"Excuse me," he said stiffly, stepping back. "I need a minute."
My hand hung in the air as he disappeared from the room.
On its heels was the sound of Dominic's yell. An inarticulate bleeding of his soul that he released into the world. I heard every bit of his pain. His frustration. His regret over what once was.
Over what could have been.
I dropped my head into my hands as sobs wracked me.
Outside, I suspected Dom was doing the same. I'd thought our hearts couldn't break again, but I'd been wrong.
A tapping noise pierced my sorrow. I cleared my throat and forced myself to speak. "Not now, Frank."
The tapping came again. More insistent this time.
"Frank, fuck off."
"Dom, love, let me in."
My shoulders tensed. That wasn't my father's voice. Wasn't coming from the doorway either.
Slowly, ever so slowly, I raised my head. Tears clouded my vision, but that was definitely Ryan Davies peering through my window. Concern battled with heartache on his face, deepening as he met my gaze. "Can you open the window, baby? Please?"
Because, when I turned, there was no trouble.
Just Dominic on one knee.
A ring box in his hand.
"Shadow, I love you," he said, raising his voice to be heard over the final notes of "Something." Max and Xander, I realised, were using their arms to keep people back, giving Dom enough space to do this. "I've known you were the one for me since you yelled at me in an alley before kissing me."
I snorted, swiping a tear away. "Not exactly how I remember it." Dom smirked. "I'm talking now, Shadow. Zip it."
3.5⭐️ this is a tough one for me to rate because I LOVED book one so much, the raw emotions and way that book ended had me so hype for this installment (which I’m very grateful came out only two weeks after book 1). But by about 35% into this one I was already over the whole “engaged to someone else” plot line as the device for keeping Ryan & Dom apart.
I honestly don’t think that was needed at all, and I think just the hurt they caused each other in book one would’ve been more than enough to stand on its own as the reason for Ryan being wary of giving Dominic a second chance.
Because of the engagement we were then left with Ryan’s fiance being a totally two-dimensional throwaway character who is also given her own random side quest plot 🤷♀️
If all of that had been trimmed out and we got JUST the parts with Ryan and Dominic trying to be around each other, having to rehash their past in order to move forward, and then also got some conversations we are told they had actually on the page, I have no doubt it would’ve been a 5⭐️
But we didn’t get that, so that’s also why it took me a few weeks to push thru and actually finish the book. I was very happy with the epilogue though!
*I received an arc copy of this book. All opinions are my own*
This duet is spectacular. SPECTACULAR, do you hear me? This is a must MUST must MUST read.
Shadows Never Leave is the 2nd book, and you can't read it without reading book one. The story spans for the duration of 11 years so you need need to know the whole story.
Book one was amazing, but this one? This one was even better. I had tears in my eyes the whole time. The emotions I felt while reading this book can't even be described into words. It isn't because this is a sad book or anything. Sure, it has sad moments, if you want, but it was more about how overwhelming the feelings of Ryan and Dominic were. I felt overwhelmed in the best way... moist eyes and all that. 🤣
This book goes straight to my top reads of 2026, so... you can just imagine how absolutely in love I am with them.
Lark, please, you better give me Max and Xander's story. I am begging you. The tension and bickering was strong with those two and I NEED more. Of course, that would also mean we get more of Ry and Dom, and you won't hear me complain.
It is hard to review this because this duet is an experience, and whatever I could say would be a spoiler and I don't want that. I want you to experience this by yourself just like I did, but if you want to take something from this, just know that The Shadow Duet is worth it. You can't regret reading it... it is physically impossible, imho.
Jeez, I am so happy I got the chance to read this. 5 stars are NOT enough. I'd give this infinite stars if I could.
I really loved the first book in this duet, so I had been anxiously waiting for this follow-up. Dominic and Ryan were such a great match, and after the way the first book ended, I was desperate to see how they were going to find their way back to each other.
This story picks up with Dominic returning to town fully determined to win Ryan back, and honestly, watching him try was probably my favorite part of the whole book. He was giving light stalker vibes in the best possible way because this man somehow managed to show up everywhere Ryan was. But more than that, he genuinely took accountability for his past mistakes and did everything he could to prove how much Ryan meant to him. Dominic was completely relentless when it came to fighting for their relationship, and I loved that about him.
Ryan’s stubbornness definitely got frustrating at times, especially because so much of the conflict between them stemmed from misunderstandings and lack of communication. But once they finally sat down and really talked about where they both were emotionally when everything fell apart, you could finally feel the shift between them. From that point on, their reconnection felt so satisfying.
I also really appreciated the healing in the side relationships throughout the story. Seeing Ryan and Max work on repairing their relationship and Dominic reconnect with his dad added a lot of emotional depth to the book. It felt necessary for both of them to truly move forward in a healthier way together.
And Dominic and Ryan together? So good. Their emotional connection was already incredibly strong, but once they fully reconnected, the chemistry between them was unreal. The tension leading up to them getting back together was delicious, and the payoff absolutely delivered. Their love for each other felt so deep and tangible throughout the entire story.
The one subplot that didn’t completely work for me was Kate and the engagement situation. She felt like a red flag from the beginning, and the fact that she was mostly absent from the story—even ignoring Ryan for weeks leading up to the wedding—felt strange to me. Then the reveal with her and her stepbrother happened so quickly that it ended up feeling a little anticlimactic. I think there was some missed potential there. That being said, I was glad it finally pushed Ryan to stop feeling obligated to go through with the marriage.
Overall, I ended up enjoying this duet even more than I expected to, and now I’m really excited to read more from Lark Taylor. If you love second chances, delicious tension, emotional angst, lots of spice, and an obsessed MC willing to do whatever it takes to get their person back, you’ll definitely want to pick this one up.

I just knew without a doubt that the final conclusion of this duet was going to be epic and it certainly did not disappoint me at all.
This book was absolutely perfect. From the groveling of Max and Dominic, it was an amazing read. The groveling and the apology from Max to Ryan was beautiful. Sometimes when you read about a rivalry, you don’t get the whole story or even the whole not apologizing, so I was here for it.
These two were so stubborn but gosh, they were beautiful. Dominic loved Ryan so much and he showed him every moment. When he got sick, I was in my emotions because even when he sent a message to Kate, Dominic was the one to really show up whenever it counted.
Ryan finally wakes up the moment Dominic comes back in his life and it’s just so beautiful to see these two come together after being apart for so any years.
Dominic is definitely my favorite of the two because the things he does he does for Ryan - his Shadow. Those letters broke my heart but this shows how hard he loves and what kind of future he wants.
Xander - can we just talk about him? He Is the bestest of best friends that I’ve read. The protectiveness that you see how he is with Ryan is beautiful. When he punched Dominic, it was good but man, when Max got it, not once but twice, it was perfection. Although, that first punch he got had me laughing because he was like “I’ll take that for you”
This final duet had such beautiful moments from the letters to the tattoos and the cabin scenes were so beautiful. Also, the way that Ryan helped Frank from being an awful father was beautiful and just the relationship he built with Frank was heartwarming. I just loved that Frank finally became the father Dominic needed and that porch scene had me giggling.
What I really loved was how Dominic told him to go for his dreams.
I also need to read the books featuring Caffeine Daydreams because I need more!
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.

This book was so different from what I was expecting it to be! After the way things ended in Shadows Never Lie, I expected an angst filled journey to a HEA. And while it did deliver on the pain and angst, this book also had me laughing so much. The way Dom and Ryan kept making each other jealous and making their possessiveness flare just made me smile. Their antics were pretty silly at times but so entertaining and I was here for all of it!
I loved how much the characters had grown in the time that's passed. Not just Dom and Ryan, but Max and Frank too. The way they all took responsibility for their actions and worked to earn each other's forgiveness was amazing. And we got a brand new character that I'm already in love with! Xander and his friendship with Ryan were some of my favorite parts of this book. His loyalty and the way he constantly stood up for Ryan made him an immediate fave and I hope he gets his own story (maybe with a certain Davies twin?) in the future!
Although it was a little predictable, I'm glad that things with Ryan's marriage were resolved so smoothly without any bad blood. Like we all know Dom and Ryan are true loves, but I didn't want anyone to get hurt in the process. And once they figured everything out and were in it for the long haul, these two were so ridiculously sweet with each other. It made me so happy to see them just be in love and enjoy life together!
Each book in this duet was so different from the other and I loved both of them for their own reasons. This one was a mix of healing, chaotic fun and heartbreaking moments. I don't want to spoil anything, but this one moment before they officially get together had me bawling my eyes but it was also so cathartic. It led to a really cute grand gesture that I adored so much!
I just enjoyed everything about this duet, and I know I'm repeating myself, but I really hope we get to come back to this family with a Xander book!
… With how book 1 left me reeling, I was so nervous to see how this would play out. I absolutely hated Dom, couldn't find it in myself to forgive him, and didn't think he deserved to be with Ryan. I wondered, how the hell am I supposed to read this and root for them to get back together? I came to the conclusion that I don't think that's even the point. The point is for you to sit with your anger and watch how Ryan handles it all. Let me tell you, it was extremely painful. 75% of the book is spent in agony, feeling heartbroken for Ryan, anger and misery and betrayal towards Dom, … but at one particular scene Dom broke through my walls and by that point I was exhausted of being angry at him. At that point, forgiveness is self care. 😭 They both fought long and hard for their happy end, it is well deserved. Maybe you'll like Dom, maybe you'll hate him, maybe you won't forgive him, but that's okay. The story ends in a hard-earned HEA, and no one can deny that Dom and Ryan are soulmates, meant to be together, two halves of one whole. I admire Ryan and how he found it in himself to choose his happiness, after a long and painful battle. Kudos to Lark Taylor, because I truly think she's one of a kind to actually pull this off successfully. Dom is the most persistent and stubborn character I've ever come across and it certainly helped his case. I also really loved the addition of Xander's character, he's an amazing friend and I was so happy that Ryan had someone like him in his corner. Kate, the fiancée, was a nice lady, though I absolutely saw the plot twist at the end there coming… Now regarding Max… 18 year old Max is an awful, disgusting person, but grown up, mature Max is… not. I appreciate his character development, but I also would be hesitant to say he's forgiven and I like him. However, I am a sucker for a redeemed villain story, and Xander is also quite an interesting character, and together they make an interesting pair… do with that what you will!
