I can’t leave Ryan Davies behind any more than I can my own shadow.

It’s been ten years since Ryan turned his back on me and walked away. A decade of living my life without him. Dreaming of him. Longing for him. Craving him.

But I made a promise to him that night. A vow that one day, I’d be back to claim him. Because he is my shadow. Mine - and I won’t ever let him forget it.

It’s all boiled down to this moment. There’s nothing standing in the way of our future happiness.

Aside from Ryan’s fiancée.

I’ll sacrifice anything to have him in my life again. I’m going to remind him that love burns brightest in the dark. No-one can make Ryan happier than I can.

All I have to do is prove it to him before he stands at the end of the aisle.

Waiting for someone else.

I’ll wait in the shadows until he’s ready to accept what I already know.

That we belong together.

Shadows Never Leave is the final book in the Shadow Duet. It must be read after Shadows Never Lie. This contemporary, high-angst MM romance ends in a very satisfying HEA.

This was a great follow-up to book 1 and I’m glad we got them so close together. I knew we would get groveling from Dom and some unhinged behavior and I enjoyed every moment of it! Not only was the groveling great but the new level of communication between these two was as well. I loved that Ryan made Dom work for what he wanted but what made it even better was how honest they were being with each other. Even with the hard stuff.

I appreciate when it came to Max that we got insight on his behavior and that he also had to put in work to begin mending his relationships with Dom and Ryan. It felt a little more honest considering what they went through even as teenagers that they didn’t immediately revert to better times just because apologies were given.

I love Xander and wouldn’t mind if he and Max became a thing. He was a great support system for Ryan and I think he could help Max see the error of his ways.

The character development was great, I enjoyed the storyline and the writing.

This is one of those books that had so much potential to absolutely wreck me in the best way… but ultimately didn’t quite stick the landing.

One quote really stood out to me:
“You can’t hold onto anger for the sake of it… it’ll eat you from the inside out.”

And while that’s fair, you also can’t force someone to let go of that anger through manipulation and expect it to feel real. Forgiveness isn’t something that can be cornered into existence, it has to come naturally. When a story doesn’t allow space for that anger to be processed, the healing feels rushed instead of earned.

That’s where this fell apart for me.

After a decade of hurt, betrayal, and complete separation, the reconciliation between Ryan, Dominic, and Max didn’t feel earned, it felt coerced. The timeline spans roughly a month, and I just couldn’t believe that ten years of emotional pain and unresolved trauma could realistically be worked through in that time, especially given how deeply Ryan’s hurt is established across both books.

What made it more frustrating was how often Ryan’s autonomy was ignored. He’s a grown man, yet he’s repeatedly placed in situations where his choices are overridden or manipulated, by Dominic, Max, and even Frank. Instead of being given space to process and choose, he’s pushed into proximity and emotional confrontations he didn’t consent to. At times, it felt less like reconciliation and more like a coordinated effort to push him toward forgiveness before he was ready.

And that distinction matters; there’s a difference between choosing to let go and being worn down into it.

Because of that, key moments, apologies, accountability, rebuilding trust, don’t carry the weight they should. They feel rushed or overshadowed by physical intimacy and grand gestures that don’t fully align with the characters’ history.

I will say, the emotional payoff at the end did land more than I expected, which is why this didn’t rate lower for me. The connection is there, and the foundation for something powerful absolutely exists, it just needed more time and care to truly work.

In the end, this wasn’t about whether they should end up together, but whether I believed they had done the work to get there. And for me, that answer was not so much.

I received a complimentary, advanced copy of this book from the author, and this is my voluntary, honest review.

I am so happy right now writing this, my heart has finally settled ❤️‍🩹

Being a very emotional reader I try to avoid stories that don’t have a conclusion yet, so I was so incredibly grateful that these two books were coming out with a minimal break! 🙌

Just like the first one, this book is simply fantastic. In a different way, but with the same incredible emotional intensity.

Dominic had my heart almost instantly. The way he loves is truly magical. He did make some stupid decisions and hurt Ryan, but we have to remember that they were both just 18 then. It is not really an excuse, but people are not all sensible at that age and he did have a rough childhood.
That said, he left with a solid intention to grow up. There was never any doubt in his love. And ohmigod how completely, selflessly, and desperately he loves Ryan ❤‍🔥

“You’re worth it, Shadow. Besides, I don’t have a heart to give away anymore. It always has, and always will, belong to you.”

Yes, the whole thing happens in a span of a month, but it really is about the actions, and Dominic’s actions all were just backing up his words. He came to stay. To never leave. To be there FOR Ryan at all times. And he was, in all the smallest things, taking care of him and proving his words. Even if it meant to wait.

“ I’ll have your back through all of it because I love you. That’s never changed, and it never will.”
“And if I don’t want that?”
Dom smiled bleakly.
“Then I’ll wait until you do.”

How many times my heart was breaking for both of them is just crazy. There is so much hurt and pain and yearning 💔
I felt so sorry for Ryan, struggling to keep moving on and make things right with Kate up till the very end, even when she herself was honestly acting.. let’s just say. I didn’t like her 🙄 Her whole story with Rafa felt like a lot was unsaid there, but who cares about them anyway)

And while I knew we were getting an HEA, I was still on the edge of my seat the whole time, I wanted to hug them both and scream and kick my feet with anticipation!!

There were also so many beautiful things that had me on the verge of tears: the tattoos, the art, but then those letters.. They just broke me. Knowing why they were written and imagining what Dom went through writing each one was just 😭

“I love you, Shadow. You’re part of me now. You don’t just own my heart, you are my heart.”

I loved so many things about this story. Nothing was left out. The way Ryan helped and basically saved Frank, how they have found a father and a son in each other ❤️‍🩹 How Ryan gave Dom his father back, it was such an important thing.
Reconciliation with Max will take time but I am sure they will get there too.
I genuinely loved Xander and Dom’s friends from the military, will be so thrilled to have some of their stories too (especially X and M 🤭)

And I think I will finally get on with the Caffeine Daydreams series 🥰

I am so thankful to Lark Taylor for this amazing duet and to TAA for the ARC 💗

The angst continued in Shadows Never Leave and I was on the edge of my seat until the very end!!!!

Second chances don't just include getting over a broken heart. There can be so many other emotions involved in a relationship like what Dominic and Ryan had and lost; abandonment, broken trust, emotional worth, etc...When Dominic left he didn't just break Ryan's heart he broke his trust and his brother, Max, was instrumental in crushing it to pieces. Ryan was broken on all sides and it took years to start piecing himself back together. He also waited years to hear something from Dom, which never happened, solidifying all the awful feelings Ryan was already sitting in.

I felt Ryan's hesitation to forgive and give Dominic a second chance in my soul. I felt his pain and hurt like it was my own. This part of the story isn't about Ryan trying to keep Dom at arm's length to teach him a lesson or to get back at him. Ryan was scarred, his wounds still festered and he had ten years to let every harsh word infect him over and over again.

While Dom thought winning Ryan back would take some work he never imagined the emotional wreckage that he'd come home to. This half of the story is all about the emotional cleanup that needs to be done and I was rooting hard for them, even with all the angst. There were moments I waffled, and that was with me wanting them to end up together...but the heartbreak, the emotional devastation and then the longing and yearning that they both went through...it made my heart ache, but it was also so darn good!!! If Dominic wasn't the hard headed man he is, I think most people would have given up, but he never stopped loving Ryan. He saw him as his forever and no matter what he'd wait for him forever.💔😍

As for Max, I cannot believe I'm saying this, but dangnabit, he was redemptive and I was even stating to like the guy. 🤯🤣 right! Who would have guessed! I hope to see more of him...a total redemption story, perhaps.

I'm going to say that, Shadows Never Leave is almost angstier than the first book. Almost. It's all about rectifying the past when your future is sitting right in front of you. What you want vs. what you have and what makes you happiest.

This is the second book in a duet and needs to be read in order for the best understanding and enjoyment. It also was really hard to put down as I stayed up really late into the night once again reading this amazing book!! I had to find out how everything ends. And I couldn't have been happier. 🥰

Did I drop absolutely everything the second I got this? Yes!! I didn't put this book down until I was finished either, and it was just so, so good!!

The emotional pain Dominic and Ryan put each other through was heartbreaking! Their talks about the past were so sad, but when Ryan tells Dominic that he came back for him..... Heartbreaking!!! These two are drawn to each other like magnets and seeing them repair their relationship was everything! Those letters.... Dominic may have made some stupid decisions, but his romance game and wanting Ryan to be happy above all else was something else!

I haven't read a love triangle book in ages it feels like, no one seems to write them anymore! But for people who don't enjoy that trope, there really wasn't much of Kate's actual presence in the book, which made it easier to forget about her... oops?!

I loved the relationship between Ryan and Dominic's dad, Frank, and the way that the relationship between Dominic and Frank was being repaired too. Frank's meddling was so funny because that guy cannot hide a secret at all!!

The only things I wasn't 100% sold on were Max and Rafe's roles in the story.

I don't know how I feel about Max's explanation and apology really, because it didn't feel like he fully explained why it was that he started icing Ryan out, other than being a jealous teenager. I think I need to sit with it for a while before I decide if it settled my questions about the whole thing!

Rafe though.... His entire presence felt a little too convenient? I saw what was coming as soon as he was introduced, but his character was so OTT that I found it hard to take any scene with him in it seriously!! Again, I'm not sure how I feel about it, but I did like how the story played out, so I'm conflicted!

Overall though I loved Dominic and Ryan's journey back to each other and their well deserved HEA. I'm hoping we get more on Mimic, Xander, and Max in future though because I'm intrigued by all of those characters...

Pretending that I didn’t want him was breaking me.

Shadows Never Leave is book 2 of the Shadow Duet. I read them back to back and I'm so glad I did because I really hate waiting to know what happens in a story. Duets about the same couple usually aren't my favourite, but I'll make the occasional exception when there's more story left to be told. In book 1, Ryan's twin Max and his ex Dom leave, and Ryan is completely devastated. This book is part 2, where Dom is back and Ryan has to decide if he can trust him again. Dom leaving shattered his heart, and it took years for Ryan to build up walls and coping mechanisms and form scar tissue. He can't even drink wine without thinking of Dom. But when a love hits so deep and true, the wound can never truly heal. How can you ever say no to your soulmate, no matter what they've done?
“That’s the truly fucked-up truth I eventually arrived at. I can’t ever get away from you, because you’re part of me. Somehow, all those years ago, you carved your name on my heart. You claimed me, and now no one else can. Worse, I don’t want them to. The thought of even trying to let someone else in feels…wrong. But with you? It feels right. Because with you is where I belong.”

The thing about protecting your heart is that you don’t always know what you’re protecting it from- the risk of being hurt again, or the risk of being lonely for the rest of your life. Ryan thinks he has a big choice to make in this book, but his younger self made that choice long ago when he got on his knees for his brother's best friend.
Being with the one you loved in the end was worth everything.

All I really wanted from part 2 was a suitable amount of grovelling. Thank you Lark- it was perfect *chef's kiss*. I wanted capital G Grovelling. I wanted maturity, improved communication and true regret. I got all of that and more. p.s. Lark, I think I might die if I don’t get Xander and Max’s story 🙏 🥹. I can see the set-up and plans you have already and I'm so excited to read it!

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

Shadows Never Leave by Lark Taylor is the second part of the Shadow Duet. Dominic has returned from his years of service and only wants the man he loves Ryan. Ryan isn’t the same man he left behind though, having given up so much of what made them fall in love initially. Ryan is engaged to be married whether Dominic likes it or not. Dominic keeps finding ways to engrain himself into Ryan’s current life and is refusing to give up on their future together. But the past is hard to let go over and Ryan’s feelings of abandonment run deep. But Dominic hasn’t survived everything the military threw at him to give up on the future that kept him going.

I am torn. This book leaves me torn because I really loved the first part but this part felt like a lot of angst between two grown men. Ryan’s feelings were continually ignored or dismissed and later Dominic’s were disregarded or downplayed. For two people very committed to each other, they managed to bungle up a whole lot of their reunion. There was also the blatant elephant in the room that was Ryan’s engagement and upcoming wedding. It bothered me how unimportant that felt to both men. I understand Dominic not believing it would happen but Ryan didn’t exactly have any reason to pretend he wasn’t supposed to be getting married or that he hadn’t made a commitment to Kate. Xander was a shining star in this book as a support system for Ryan and his absolute hatred for Max (I will absolutely read a book about them, yes please). There were bright spots as well including watching family resolution work itself out and how messy that could be. I also liked Ryan and Dominic together when they just allowed themselves the happiness they felt together. They have a lot of chemistry and it was evident that the spark did not fade in the years apart.

“I chose you a long time ago.” He pressed his forehead to mine.
“Just needed a little time to remember it. That’s all.”

4 stars for Dominic and Ryan’s rocky journey back to each other.

Oh Lark, The Shadow duet was amazing 10/10!! I was balling my eyes out in the end, happy tears but also sad it was over. Shadows Never Leave, was the perfect follow up after Shadows Never Lie. It was definitely not easy to get there, but I would put myself through the emotional damage to read it for the first time again. In Shadows Never Lie, we meet Dom and Ryan and get to see how the relationship started, how they fell in love, and the lies that tore them apart. Between Dom withholding the truth, and the lies from his brother Max, Ryan with lack of communication and not saying what he actually wants they don’t see each other for 10 years. Shadows Never Leave starts with a bang, when Ryan and Dom see each other for the first time after the 10 year separation at Ryan’s Stag party. From reading Ryan’s reaction after that first meeting, you know it’s going to be a bumpy ride. This book is filled with so much angst! I felt for Ryan, he was so hurt from the past and the trust issues were strong with this one. He didn’t trust Dom or Max with words, he needed action and he definitely got that from both men. I loved that he and his brother Max, sat down and talked and began their own healing journey. Ryan and Dom’s HEA journey was so hard to read. I cried multiple times, throughout the book. The truths that were told, and reactions from both men killed me. The worst for me was Dom’s reaction, after finding out Ryan tried to find him after their fight😭😭. Lark definitely makes up for it though❤️‍🩹Watching both men learn to communicate, tell their truths, and heal together was beautiful. I’m not going to say more about that, because you need to experience their journey for yourself ❤️ Side note, Ryan’s ex fiancée, will be fine 😏 I also need wayyy more of Max and Xander they are going to be 🥵🔥🔥. Thank you Lark, this duet was beautiful and I cannot wait to see what you have in store next💙🩵❤️🖤.

This book was spectacular. It was the perfect follow up to the first book. This is book 2 in a duet, you must read book 1. In book 1 we got to know Dom and Ryan as teenagers that are full of teenage angst and passion and stupidity of course. They make terrible decision, they don’t communicate, they let their libido and impulses drive them. Ten years later they are face to face again, except now Ryan is about to get married. That is where we pick up in this book, Ryan is preparing to marry Kate but Dom isn’t giving up, he is hound and determined to win Ryan back. His confidence that he will that they belong together is the fuel to push him through the pain and the heartache. But Ryan is stubborn and he’s scared to be broken again. These two broke each other once before, Ryan’s trust in Dom shattered with some hurtful words. Their path to their HEA is filled with past hurts, trauma and miscommunications, misunderstandings and fear. But Dom won’t stop. And Ryan can’t stay away. He is drawn to Dom as much as Dom is drawn to him. Their love for one another is soul deep and all encompassing. Love isn’t the problem though, trust is. To trust Dom with Ryan’s heart is the struggle. I cried. I legit broke down and cried so many times to watch their heartbreak, to feel their pain and grief. This book took me through the wringer, tears, smiles, heat. It was hot AF, sweet as sugar, and filled with so much love. You could feel their love as if it was yours, their pain as if your heart had been shattered too. The author does an amazing job of making you take on the characters emotions, to suck us in to their reality and live it with them. I devoured this book, couldn’t stop reading it. This duet was an amazing story of young love, deep hurts, and soulmates. .

Beautifully Angsty, Emotional, and Completely Consuming

Shadows Never Leave by Lark Taylor pulled me right back into Ryan Davies and Dominic Walker’s story and honestly had me emotionally invested from beginning to end. The tension between these two is absolutely overflowing with history, longing, obsession, and unresolved feelings, and every interaction between them carried so much emotional weight.

Dominic’s devotion to Ryan felt intense in the best possible way. After ten years apart, you can feel how deeply Ryan still lives inside him, and watching him fight for a second chance made this incredibly hard to put down. The groveling, emotional honesty, and vulnerability throughout the story gave their relationship so much depth, especially once the walls between them finally started coming down.

Ryan’s emotional journey was just as compelling. His hurt, confusion, and lingering connection to Dominic all felt authentic, and I loved seeing the story allow room for complicated emotions while still keeping that undeniable pull between them front and center. Their chemistry never faded for a second, emotionally or physically.

I also really appreciated the way the supporting characters were woven into the story. Max added another layer to the emotional tension, and Xander was such a strong presence throughout. The relationships in this book felt messy, emotional, and deeply human in a way that kept me fully immersed.

At its core, this story is about love that refuses to disappear no matter how much time, pain, or distance stands in the way. If you love second-chance MM romance filled with emotional longing, obsessive devotion, vulnerability, and deeply earned emotional payoff, this duet absolutely delivers.

Shadows Never Leave
Shadows Duet book 2
Lark Taylor

Ryan and Dominic

The minute this dropped in my email, I was on it. I could not wait to see Dom get his man back.

Whew, what a ride this was. I stayed up all night to read this. This duet was fantastic!

This was so satisfying. The reconciliation with Frank & Max… of my heart.

I understood Max’s side, I didn't like what he did, but I got it. Also, Dom’s POV and Ryan too, I understood both sides… such a terrible waste of 10 years over miscommunication. I appreciated all the groveling by everyone.

And Xander !!! Oh my word, if we ever get a Xander and Max book, I'll pass out !!!! Those two would be wildly hot.

Lark’s writing with duet was exceptional. I was so invested. Unhinged and obsessed. What a stunning way to write a romance book. Best duet I have read in a long time.

But also Frank and Ryan's relationship too was everything.

Sheesh, this book had everything.

And Dom’s team, those boys were hilarious and so supportive. I loved them.

This duet has rich character development, stunning found family and friends. Phenomenal grovelling and epic pining and yearning.

Super hot intimacy and spice. Incredible love story. I bet an audiobook of this duet would be unbelievable!

I also want to thank Lark for the fact we did not have to wait months for the 2nd book to come out. That was so smart!

I don’t know, this was fantastic to me. I was teary-eyed at times. That scene on the porch, when Ryan and Dom went away, and me tearing up. This was just written so well.

I’m rambling. I clearly loved this. Added to my favorites list!!! Stunning duet. Beautifully written.

I loved it. I really think you should read this.

So thankful for this arc.

- Duet
- Ongoing story
- High angst
- HEA

I couldn't wait for this one, and I read it in pretty much one sitting. I regret nothing because I loved it. This is part 2 of Dominic and Ryan's story, and it picks up exactly where the first book left off. They have to be read in tandem, and honestly if you read the first one you will need to go straight on to part 2. Dominic is home and determined to get Ryan back. There's a 10 year time jump from the first book and all that time is covered here, right up to the present day where Ryan has seemingly moved on and is about to marry Kate. Dominic is one determined individual though and while I sometimes might not have liked his methods, I really admired his determination and how well he knew himself and, Ryan too.

I didn't care for Kate all that much, she came across a bit unfeeling and that wasn't helped by the events of the ending - neither she nor Ryan were blameless but Kate definitely came across as more than a bit cold. I loved Xander, Ryan's best friend and support system for the last 10 years when he felt abandoned by Dominic and his twin. I loved the interplay with Max and Xander and I think there's a story there that needs to be written. I'd read it.

There's a lot of angst in this story, these two have a lot to sort out, there's a lot of hurt, pain, and misunderstandings that run deep but it's a gripping read and I couldn't put it down. I loved this duet and it's definitely one I'll revisit in future for a re-read. Can't recommend this enough.

I finished Shadows Never Lie and IMMEDIATELY started this.

Did I have other ARCS to read first? Yup, I totally did.
Did I also say F it all and forget all priorities and responsibilities until I knew what happened between these two? Yup, uh huh, I completely did.
Did I have any regrets? Nope, not one single regret was given.

I was consumed by these two. The tension. The tattoos. The love. The longing. The lengths that Dom went through to show he was there and wasn't going anywhere. Devoured and left wanting more.

These two had me on pins and needles with what was going to happen next. I don't think I have had as many goodread reading updates as I did when reading this because I was just that obsessed with these two and had to share my thoughts.

When things finally shifted and they admitted their feelings and decided to move forward, together, I squealed. LEGIT squealed like a little schoolgirl, that my husband looked at me like I was insane. eh oh well, these two will live with me for the foreseeable future and will definitely be ones that I read quite often.

I would love more books in this world. More on Max AND Xander, together in all their tension filled glory, Taff and Mimic. I just loved them so much as well.

Shadows Never Leave is the final part in the Shadow Duet, and my goodness, is it an emotional and angsty read. Dominic and Ryan are clearly soul mates, but their choices made at the end of the first story made this a very epic second-chance romance. Their years of pain, loneliness, and anguish really remain present in this story as they work toward an eventual reconciliation. That aspect took time and patience, which I appreciated as Ryan's heart was irrevocably broken for so long and Dominic really needed to grovel and earn back the trust he broke.

Another winning aspect of this story is the somewhat redemption or explanation of Max's behavior. He was horrible in the first entry, but with time and perspective, I appreciate his explanation of their upbringing and why his actions were so callous and vindictive. Hopefully, his story continues, and more is offered in why he behaved the way he did, and he can get some form of redemptive story.

Overall, Ryan and Dominic's HEA is very hard-won; their trauma, separation, and pain took a lot of time to heal from, but watching them slowly let down their guards and accept, forgive, and move forward was completely rewarding and made for a great second-chance romance. Also, the last few chapters were something special.

I look forward to hopefully reading about these characters again. There were a few loose ends that I would not mind revisiting, especially when it comes to Xander and possibly someone else.....

We were told, not shown. Dom goes radio silent for 10 years to “grow up and become a man worthy of Ryan.” Gets his art inked on his skin, Ryan’s name tattooed over his heart, for “anyone sharing my bed. I wanted them to know that while they might have my body, they’d never have my heart”. Cue screeching tires. What the actual fuck? This part right here really brought home the fact the Dom was literally all talk. He made no sacrifices to be worthy of Ryan. Oh no, it was empty hook ups, I guess those don’t count I guess? This doesn’t seem like the actions of someone desperately in love with someone they are trying to win back. The excuse that they’re not together doesn’t hold water either since Dom literally plans to get Ryan back using whatever means are necessary. How exactly did he mature and grow up again?

Dom kept doing all the things the upset Ryan so much in the first book. Making big decisions without him, thinking he knew what was best. He inserted himself into every aspect of Ryan’s life without any regard for good make Ryan feel. It was “worth it” to get him back. We are being told that Dom’s had character growth without being shown it.

I don’t know if I had too high of expectations or what, but I was really disappointed in this book. I really liked the first one, so this was a big let down. I just kept getting madder and madder at Dom as I read.

CHEF'S F*CKING KISS!!!
NOT A DRY EYE IN SIGHT!!

Did I stay up till 4am to finish this? - Hell yes
Was it worth it? - A million times over

My god what a book!

The emotions - my god Lark, you put me through it!!
One minute I was laughing along with Dominic’s antics and the next I was sobbing!
The fishing cabin confessions - JESUS! I haven't cried like that in so long!
My heart absolutely broke for these boys!!

Dom set out to prove to Ryan that he was there to get him back / be with him and my god was he persistent! And my god did he go above and beyond to prove just how much he wanted it. A lot of those times were brilliantly executed and others hillarious. The fishing trip plot was brilliant and the reward was just perfect! That night in the cabin, my god i was in tears with both of their conversations and confessions. And when Dom broke...jesus christ I.COULD.NOT.HANDLE.IT!!!

THE TATTOOS!!! 😫
THE LETTERS!!! 😫
The third bedroom at the cabin 😫
I fear i will never recover!

This book broke my heart but my god did it also heal it! In the best possible ways!

It was utter perfection, the writing, the hurt, the healing - pure author magic!
This book gave me ALL the hurt and ALL the comfort!

The epilogue - absolutely perfect ❤️

If you read anything next PLEASE READ THIS DUO OF BOOKS!!

P.S - Lark - i need a Max and Xander book!!!

Shadows Never Leave is book 2 in the Shadows Duet, and needs to be read in order, as it concludes Ryan and Dominic story.

There's a big jump from book 1, both in the time line and character representation. Ryan and Dom have grown up, lived 10 years apart, and are now back in each other's lives.

This was still a super angsty read, even though our MMCs are in their late 20s. There's yearning, there's a lot of past pain that needs to be resolved, and there's plenty of guilt going around. But there's also a lot of love, the kind that changes lives. The HEA here is earned every page of the story, never forgetting the past, and yet trying to move forward.

I loved how both characters have changed, and yet somehow their chemistry didn't let up one bit. I also liked having new characters take up space, not focusing the story entirely around the MMCs.

I would consider this a relatively slow burn, spice-wise. While there's plenty of feelings to go around, the physical aspect of the relationship takes more time to develop, perfectly in line with the story being told. But when they start getting to it, the heat is cranked up like crazy.

Overall, this was a deeply emotional story of change and growth, but also of learning to forgive and be happy again. This author was new to me, but I will surely check out more of their work.

MUST BE READ AFTER BOOK 1!

Ryan and Dominic are meant to be together, I don’t know if I’ve ever read two characters who I genuinely believe can be happy apart. It was like they couldn’t be their true selves without the other.

Seeing (reading) their pain, was breaking my heart over and over before putting it back together again in the best way.

When I read book 1 with most chapters from Ryan’s POV, I assumed book 2 would be Dominic’s but again it’s heavily weighted towards Ryan. At first I was surprised, but it actually makes complete sense as you read. Ryan is the one whose changing emotions/ thoughts/ feelings have the impact, so it’s best to be alongside him, whereas Dominic is pretty steadfast in his view: he wants Ryan back, no alternative.

Looking at the tropes, I was always going to rate book 1 higher, just from a personal preference. The journey of falling in love is always my favourite part of a book, whereas because that happens book 1, book 2 reads more as exes to lovers with Ryan learning to trust again.

I also wish we’d got more from Max to understand his issues with Ryan as a teenager (but seeing his hatred/ chemistry with Ryan’s best friend Xander, I’m wondering if he has his own book coming).

Overall a solid read, I would definitely recommend, but only if book 1 is read first

Shadows Never Leave is book two in the Shadow duet. This brother’s best friend MM romance story is about Ryan and Dominic.

After reading book one I was left just as devastated as Ryan was, so thank goodness I didn’t have to wait very long for book two. But my gosh, I didn’t think this second book was going to hurt just as much as the first. Ryan and Dominic go through so much pain and heartbreak. Dominic is willing to do whatever it takes to get Ryan back, and Ryan certainly doesn’t make it easy. Although I was angry with some of Dominic’s choices and his actions, I did end up rooting for him.

I do have to admit I still had a hard time with Max. Ryan and Dominic are better than me because I don’t think I could have been as forgiving. I loved Ryan and Frank’s relationship. I also really enjoyed Xander as well Dominic’s military buddies, and I hope we will get more of them in the future.

This was such an emotional journey that Ryan and Dominic took us on. They were truly meant to be together and their love story was beautifully written. Ryan and Dominic definitely deserved their hard earned HEA, and the epilogue made my heart so incredibly happy.

What you can expect:
Brother’s Best Friend
Second Chance
Forced Proximity
Angst
Cheating (Not between MC’s)

I received an advanced copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

I received this book as an ARC read.

I read and listened to the audiobook for the first one and I was so glad I got the ARC book for this one. It brought Ryan and Dominic into my life and this beautifully written love story! As soon as I finshed the first one I just had to jump into the second one. I was left feeling so bad for Ryan that I just had to see what was going to happen with them. I didn't think that this one was going to be as good as the first one, but OH BOY was I wrong! Reading what all Dominic was going through in the years that they were apart! I was getting kind of frustrated with Ryan like if I was there I would want to shake him and be like can you see how much this boy loves you and I know you still love him. Once they spend sometime alone together and actually start communicating with one another the way that they should have the whole time oh man it was some damn good writing right there man. It definitely gives you the HEA that you are looking for! I have become obsessed with this love story!!! Mr. Taylor you sure know how to write a book!

This duet is going in my top books that I have ever read! Great story. Will definitely be getting the audiobook to this one too as soon as its available.

GO READ BOTH OF THE BOOKS!

The determination and tenacity of Dom as he fights to get his soulmate Ryan back leads to him employing some methods that did raise my eyebrow but I could see why he wouldn’t give up. There’s a softer emotional side to Dom that comes through in this second book of the duet and it does make me like him more. Ryan still has the deep pain caused by Dom all those years again running through him and he doesn’t give in to Dom immediately or easily. There’s lots of angst and yearning for both these men who have to work so hard to get their well earned HEA. Kate is of course one point of the love triangle but her role in this book is very limited and I really didn’t have any good thoughts for her at all. It was also pretty obvious what was going on with her and Rafe when he made his first appearance so don’t be put off if love triangles aren’t your thing as it’s more about Ryan and his misguided sense of loyalty to Kate. I loved seeing Frank again, the last letters written by Dom, the slow reconnection of Ryan and Max, Dom’s tattoos, the absolute loyalty Ryan’s bestie Xander and the beautiful (and spicy) deep love that re-emerges between Dom and Ryan.

✨️ARC REVIEW✨️

The angst and tension 🫠

Dom was relentless, he came back with a mission and he delivered. He made me mad at times because he was really pushing all of Ryan's boundaries but his heart was definitely in the right place.

Ryan was definitely still in love with Dom, no matter how hard he tried to resist him and push him away, his heart was always gonna be Dom's.

Frank was just like his son lol I love how supportive he was of both Ryan and Dominic. And I was so happy for Ryan's mom!!

Max was better in this one, still not a super fan but the tension with him and Xander!!! 🤌🏽 I hope Lark gives them a book at some point.

The plot twist was not unexpected but it sure was perfect lol I would read about those 2 also 😅🥵

I enjoyed this one as much as the first one, Dominic did exactly what he set out to do, he plotted and did everything to get his Shadow back. And they so belonged together ❤️

Even though I needed Dom to grovel hard, I did feel bad for him. His heart was also broken and he was trying so hard, sometimes Ryan was a bit mean...but I'm glad in the end it all worked out. I loved them so very much 🥰

Second in duet (Shadow Duet), must be read in order. Second chance. Brother’s best friend. Slow burn. Dual POV.

Ryan is getting married in a few weeks when Dominic appears back in his life determined to win Ryan back. Ten years apart, but the feelings are still there, and Dominic is determined to prove he can be trusted. A lot of time has passed and there is a lot of hurt to overcome, both men have regrets and the writing really made the emotions vivid.

I appreciated that Dominic never faltered in his plan to be in Ryan’s life, but given the time constraint it felt too quick for forgiveness and too pushy at times. I wish there was more insight into the secondary characters and their relationships with the main characters, because some of those relationships were obviously important in shaping Dominic and Ryan’s lives. There was never a moment where I believed Dominic and Ryan couldn’t make this work, their original story was so heart wrenching, and luckily those feelings remained just as strong. Overall, a really good read, and enjoyable duet, and two main characters that really go through it to get their HEA.

Just like the first book I was addicted from the start and could not out this book down.

The fact that Dom would do literally do anything to win Ryan back was so heartwarming, even when he went to sometimes toxic extremes to show up in Ryan’s life.

Dom was extreme as he was because he knows Ryan better than anyone and he knew that Ryan still loved it and wasn’t happy without him. They are soulmates and the love they had for each other brought tears to my eyes.

Seeing both Ryan and Dom grow into mature men was such a beautiful experience but they still both struggled with everything that went down when they were young and I just wanted to hug them.

Brother’s best friend is my favorite trope and in this duet it was done so well. I loved seeing Max grow as a person too and smooth things over with Ryan. This was a really important thing to me, to see Max and Ryan make up and they are some of my favorite scenes. Dom and his dad patching things up was so sweet too and the fact that Ryan played a part in it was EVERYTHING to me.

Really hoping to see more from a certain two characters in this book 👀 but I’ll be excited for any upcoming books from Lark 🖤

***The end of my review for Shadows Never Lie***The four star rating doesn’t really reflect how I felt about this book. Instead it’s a wish that book two will “make it all better”.

And for the most part the second book did just that. Dominic and Ryan were meant to be together. I just kind of wish the path to getting there wasn’t so convoluted. Most of the books I read have the author working to bring their couples together. In this case though, I felt the author worked hard at keeping them apart. I did feel the time jump solidified their maturity although they still acted like teenage boys at times. Two strong, determined personalities, working towards the same goal, with Ryan hotly denying the inevitable.

I didn’t get the sense of betrayal that normally accompanies cheating. It was a foregone conclusion that it would happen and that Ryan’s fiancee Kate was doing it too. She really played a minimal role in this book.

This is one of those stories where supporting characters had a big influence on the outcome, and I liked their contributions.

Overall I felt this was a satisfying story.

So much yearning and heartbreak and groveling!!! I loved how this duet played out, i was glad that more of the book was written from Doms perfpective so we finally see his thoughts on everything that went on years before. At first i was all for Ryan giving Dom the cold shoulder but i quickly switched sides and just kept chanting come on just give in already you know you want to Ryan!! But honestly after reading the whole duology everything happens in the right pace, Ryan held strong and firm and wasnt swindled by his love just to forgive Dom he made him work for it, hard, just for a chance at something! What i didnt really like was the whole Max situation kinda being swept under the rug very quickly, i get that it wasnt the main plot but i wish there was more self reflection from Max than just “yeah i wanted something on my own, i never felt as good as you “. He literally bullied Ryan hard, acted like he was enemy number one during theor teenage years and than was the main point for breaking his relationship so i dont think that it was handled all that well, BUT i suspect we will get Ryans book whee we can se what kind of person he actually is.

I started this book as soon as I could after the first one because I had to find out how Ryan and Dom would work things out. Dominic never gave up on trying to win Ryan back. He knew it would be hard to convince Ryan to give him another chance but he put in the work.

This was, in my opinion, very angsty with the earning and pining from both of them. It was a very slow burn and there were times that I was just really thinking “Ryan just give him another chance! You do not want Kate and Kate obviously does not want you!”

I really enjoyed Ryan and Frank’s relationship and was happy that Frank and Dom began to rebuild their relationship too. Max was fine. He apologized and explained things from his point of view. Xander was a great friend to Ryan and I would definitely read a book with Xander and Max. Seems like there is a story there!

I do wish there were more chapters from Dom’s point of view. If you love angst and a second chance romance this duet is definitely for you.

*I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.*

This was one of my most anticipated sequels and although I only had to wait 2 weeks I feared I was going to dieeee waiting. Luckily Lark delivered and I am now able to say that I am so very happy with how this story wrapped up.

Dominic has really grown. If you were worried that he would never be the right guy for Ryan, 1. I wont understand you because I love him but also 2. This book will change that. His yearning completely jumps off the page and he truly is trying to do so right by Ryan and make sure that he is happy and it is lovely how he has grown while still being so 100% in love to the point of obsession. Ryan lost himself between books 1 & 2 because he had to do it to protect his heart and there's a lot of walls that now need to be brought down. I love how we see him become the man we knew in book 1 again. How he opens up and grows and finds his way back to himself and Dom (and even Max). You see them go through the work in a way that makes it obvious they will work out for the long run.
