I previously wrote that I would not rate or review this, but I have been sitting with this book for about a week now and I simply cannot get it out of my head. And neither can my partner nor my friends who had to listen to me as I read this book. I wanted to be kind to protect the author, but this is a reader space, and I believe other readers should know what I know. This book is riddled with errors of all kinds. Typos, name changes, continuity errors. I politely emailed the author to ask if this was intentional, to which she said yes, those errors are intentional and they're meant to get the reader to go back after the ending and connect the dots. She sent an additional email to ARC readers letting them know these errors are intentional, as well. I think this is very stupid and a horrible way to write. This would maybe not be the case if the ending wasn't so ridiculous. I have never seen this level of deus ex machina before, and I promise you that if you go into this book thinking it'll be a fun gory slasher you will be extremely disappointed. There is no "horror" element in this book until about 38%, when the FMC has a nightmare. The book itself is confusing and half-assed. The characters are unlikeable and irritating, and not in a way that is fun. I wasn't rooting for anyone and I think the author's attempts to turn the genre on its head fell incredibly flat. I could perhaps forgive a stupid ending if the writing and plot were good and fun. But this? The writing in this book was atrocious. A cardinal rule of writing is you don't use the same word twice in a sentence. This author clearly doesn't give a fuck about that because there were so many instances of the same word being used multiple times in sentences, sometimes even in ways that didn't make any sense. The descriptions of some actions in the book also didn't make sense (at one point the FMC says she killed someone, and that he was "instantly paralyzed". You can't paralyze someone after they die. They are DEAD.) Another issue I have with this book is there are several mentions of things that don't happen until years after the book takes place. For example, she mentions One Direction (formed in 2010), Wreck it Ralph (released in 2012), and Alex Brightman in Beetlejuice. The Beetlejuice reference is sacriligeous, because the author was actually referring to the movie, which Alex Brightman is not even in. He's Beetlejuice on Broadway, which happened way after 2007. I won't spoil this book, but just know if you're going into this expecting a gory fun slasher that this book is not fun, is poorly written, and has the most ridiculous ending of all time in a way that completely erases the last 50% of the book. The author mentions in the acknowledgements that her sister offered to co-write the book with her, and I think she definitely should have taken her sister up on that offer. This author should maybe take a creative writing class and come back to the industry at a later date.
Original review: I cannot, with a good heart, rate this or review it. writing a book and self publishing it is an amazing feat and I feel honoured the author sent me an ARC, but I do not have anything kind to say about this book. I will refrain from saying anything else.
Slow to get going but some gory random fun at Prom. Full of ridiculous teen drama, it is very much the kind of book to turn off your brain for a while and just have fun with it. Can't say I fully enjoyed this book as much as I was hoping to but the author does have a distinctive way of writing & so much sass, it's entertaining but in a car crash kind of way.
Lotta inconsistences like wrong names used & things to that extent & inaccuracies (for example Alex Brightman is not Beetlejuice in the movie nor had he been cast in the musical by 2007 when the book is supposedly set) & editing mistakes that really pulled me outta the story. This book really could've benefitted from a good editor as the amount of glaring typos was just frustrating. Overall felt a little lazily written & the epilogue a massive cop out for all the random shit. I found all the characters unlikeable & flat
