The Prophet instructs. The women obey. The children stay silent.
When a murdered woman washes ashore off Shaw Island in Washington’s fog-shrouded Pacific Northwest, private investigator Audri Ashe uncovers a chilling network of manipulative yoga cults hidden deep in the Cascade Mountains.
What begins as a suspicious death quickly spirals into a labyrinth of buried secrets, psychological control, and dangerous devotion. As Audri surveils remote compounds and pieces together evidence of exploitation and abuse, the investigation turns darker and more personal than she ever expected. But when an eerie raven, harboring the spirit of a slain journalist, guides her to chilling clues, the case crosses into the supernatural.
Audri's ex–a famous NHL coach drowning in gambling debts–drags her deeper into danger, blurring the lines between justice, survival, and the kind of desire that gets people killed.
A taut psychological thriller coiled with dark intensity, raw emotion, and unflinching honesty—exploring cult dynamics, manipulation, and the psychology of control. For readers fascinated by cult investigations and fans of Gillian Flynn, Tana French, Paula Hawkins, Lisa Jewell, and Shari Lapena who crave mind-bending suspense and protagonists who fight back.

Book Two in the Audri Ashe Private Investigator Series.
If you love psychological thrillers packed with cult secrets, dark twists, and flawed investigators, dive into Audri Ashe's most dangerous case yet.
JJ Ellen weaves years of real-world criminal and legal investigative expertise into the rich tapestry of her fiction. She creates stories that effortlessly combine suspense and creativity from the misty shores of Seattle and the hidden coves of the San Juan Islands that have become both sanctuary and muse. These emerald landscapes, where water meets wilderness, breathe life into the pages of her Pacific Northwest mysteries.
Her intimate knowledge of terrain extends across a lifetime of wandering: from Colorado’s high country where mountain peaks scrape the sky, to New Mexico’s red-earth expanses where ancient spirits whisper through desert winds, to California’s restless coastline where cliffs surrender to the eternal conversation between land and sea. Each landscape has carved itself into her writer’s soul, informing the authenticity that grounds her characters in settings that pulse with their own heartbeat.
The American West flows through her veins like a geographic bloodline, its varied moods and hidden corners becoming the emotional geography of her fiction. Whether navigating Boulder’s Front Range shadows, tracing the Rio Grande’s silver thread through high desert, or following the Pacific’s mercurial moods along rocky shores, she writes with the authority of someone who has walked these places under every sky.
Beyond her writing, JJ finds creative expression through the lens of her camera and in the artistry of her cooking. Her connection to nature serves as both compass and anchor, guiding her along forest trails and across shimmering waters, always returning her to the stories that demand to be told.
Wind-Up Dolls is a chilling and powerful psychological thriller that hits with unsettling precision. As someone who has left a cult, I found the cult elements accurate and convincingly portrayed, adding a realism that heightens the psychological tension.
As the second book, it raises the stakes significantly, following a private investigator who takes on cases involving dangerous cults—cases that quickly become uncomfortably personal and far too close to home.
Audri Ashe is a compelling investigator: sharp, flawed, and resilient. Her emotional depth adds authenticity to the story, making the danger feel immediate and real. The psychological tension builds steadily, creating an atmosphere that is dark, immersive, and hard to shake.
Wind-Up Dolls is more than a thriller—it’s an unsettlingly honest exploration of cult dynamics wrapped in a gripping mystery. This is a standout second installment and a must-read for fans of psychological suspense and character-driven crime fiction.
I don’t usually read anything remotely supernatural, but Wind-up Dolls strikes the perfect balance. The raven adds just enough mystery without taking away from the gripping private investigator story at its core. This second installment is darker and more intense than Skeleton Tides. Audri is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters; smart, intuitive, and quietly magnetic, which makes her a fascinating read as she unravels a murder tied to a Giant Pacific Octopus and cults in the Cascade Mountains.
The multiple storylines flow effortlessly, with a psychological edge that examines what drives both the good and darker sides of human nature. The NHL hockey subplot and Philippe’s sports betting reveal unexpected layers of his narcissistic personality. Immersive, addictive, and brilliantly written. After the preview of Outlaw Hill in Taos, New Mexico, I can’t wait for the next installment.
This book was an absolute knockout. Audri Ashe is the kind of private investigator you don’t come across often, sharp, relentless, and just flawed enough to feel real.
The pacing is spot on. It pulls you in early and never really lets up. Every chapter feels like it matters, and just when you think you have things figured out, it shifts on you in a way that actually works, not the cheap kind of twist.
What really stood out to me was the character work. Audri isn’t some cookie cutter detective. There’s depth there, grit, and a sense that she’s carrying more than just the case she’s working. It adds weight to every decision she makes.
The writing is clean and confident. No fluff, no wasted space, just a solid story told well. You can tell the author knows exactly what they’re doing.
If you like crime novels with strong leads and a story that keeps you guessing without getting ridiculous, this one is well worth your time.
Another great read by JJ Ellen. Usually I think the first book in a series is always the best, but JJ Ellen out did Skeleton Tides with this second story, Wind Up Dolls. I’ve always enjoyed reading thrillers and have not read a lot about cults, and this story did a great job showing the inner workings of a cult and how hard it is to bring something like this down. JJ Ellen’s writing style made me feel like I was in the story myself. I had a hard time putting the book down because something more thrilling is happening on every page. The raven really added to the story and brought on another element that, although skeptical about at first, ended up being one of my favorite parts of the story. I recommend reading this book as it shows the true inner workings of a private investigator and is exciting to see the complexity of their career.
I first reached out to the author after devouring Skeleton Tides, the first book, on a flight back to Iceland. Audri, the private investigator, haunted me from the first page. Her intensity, her flaws, her raw connection to herself will draw you in. When the opportunity arose to be a pre-reader for Wind-up Dolls, I didn’t hesitate. This book didn't just meet my expectations—it shattered them. This is five-star, edge-of-your-seat storytelling. Audri is magnetic at her best: unraveling twisted crimes, navigating a manipulative, narcissistic ex, all while exuding a natural, undeniable sensuality. Every page pulses with tension, every twist coils tighter than the last. This psychological thriller is dark, sharp, and utterly compelling.
Wind-up Dolls drags you deep into shadows with Audri; sharp, fearless, and burning with a quiet fire. A string of sinister cults and a deadly game of sports betting pull her ex, an NHL coach, and everything she thought she knew, into lethal territory. Twists snap like shattered glass, manipulative players lurk in every corner, and Audri moves through it all with dark, magnetic intensity. A psychological thriller that bites, bruises, and refuses to let go.
