Throwing it back to the 2010s with a love triangle, angst, and dystopian romance.

Core is a direct sequel to Conform, follow Emeline, a defect giving the privileged (blergh) role of the Enforcer’s Mate. She is to be used as a vessel, merely an obedient object made for pleasing her Mate and providing offspring.

However, Emeline is somehow at the centre of a rebel movement and caught between two men - both men she shouldn’t catch feelings for.

This is angsty, slow burn and filled with reveals. I can pat myself on the back as I guessed the major twists before the 30% mark, but I appreciated seeing them play out, even if it took Emeline wayyyy too long to figure it out.

The commentary in this dystopian book is what gets me. It’s 1984 meets The Handmaid’s Tale, but with conflicting romance and a more modern (dare I say BookTok) take.

Do you know the most insidious form of control? When compliance feels like free will. We Illum are tasked with smoothing out any friction that arises.

Emeline is incredibly stubborn, but she is also a woman who is subject to the powers, pressures, and propaganda of the state.

I would recommend reading Beneath (the prequel) before this one, or at least before the next release as it will have more importance.

Bingeable, addictive, and scary (especially in the light of recent events in the USA).

I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Woooooooooo. I read Conform on a whim when it released and I devoured it. I absolutely LOVE dystopian works and this sequel did not disappoint.

While reading, there was so much intensity and so many twists that I constantly had to check my percentage complete for fear I was being set up for a devastating cliff hanger only to realize I wasn’t at the end. However, when the ending came it was still a cliffhanger but thankfully not super devastating. Although, I will still be waiting with bated breath for the next book in the series.

Overall this was an amazing read and while I pride myself on being able to predict most twists, there were a handful in here that I did not. One of the bigger twists I guessed back in book 1 but I am still pleased with how it was revealed in this story and to see how it develops over the next book. In addition, if you have not read the prequel book, it isn’t required reading but there are a few cool Easter eggs you will find in this and I do believe it enriches the plot and lore greatly.

If you enjoy dystopian books and have not yet picked up this series I absolutely am wondering what your problem is.

“You were always going to be a goodbye.”

My main takeaway from this book is that everyone drinks insane amounts of tea and wether or not I am missing out as I rarely touch it 🫣

Some series suffer from second book syndrome while others blow it out of the water and set the bar so high, you think it can never be toppled again. This is the case for Core. I loved Conform but this, I could not put it down. Ariel Sullivans writing is so addictive it made a nearly 700 pages book feel like an epic saga. Every chapter kept me completely engaged, even if it was just building up to the next phase. There was so much action, so many new characters and reveals, my mind is still spinning. I haven’t been able to binge this as I usually would due to real life, but I’m actually glad the book came at the time it did because I got to savor it. It was so hard having to put it down because for me, it really was one of those insane page turners. All 656 of them.

I will start with stating how much I loved the romance part of the book. There was a push and pull that would usually frustrate me, but the way it was done did the opposite. I honestly could not get enough and I dread the wait time until the next book.

Emeline - I really like her. I tremendously enjoyed her character development and the way she navigated learning the truth about the world she lives in, leaving behind any programming and moving forward with actual purpose. I feel she’s not fully there yet and there’s more to come in the next book, but there’s realism to slowly adapting and evolving based on your surroundings.

The world and the cast of characters have heavily been expanded as well which is always my favorite part. I could sense some of the revelations, but that didn’t take away from the story, plus there were some I didn’t see coming. Just in all honesty my mind is still reeling and I will be sitting with all of this for a while, it truly was so much. So much happening, so much information, so many names. This book felt like eating a very decadent piece of chocolate cake.

Ariel Sullivan is an autobuy author for me. So underrated, this entire series with its multiple timelines, it truly has been a balm on my soul and its desire for dystopian fiction.

Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for the arc😭😭

Thank you to NetGalley, Random House, Ballantine x Thousand Voices, for granting me early access to this title. It made my week to be a part of the first early few.

There are few books I can say are a privilege to get to recommend to people and this series is one of them. I am so excited to see Ariel Sullivan soar. She is a mastermind and deserves the success this series is seeing. After reading BENEATH I thought, “how could I possibly jump back into the CONFORM timeline?” Because I became so attached to Unit 7. But now I can’t imagine waiting two more books to get back here.

This book was thrilling, emotional, gut-wrenching, and had the perfect amount of humor laced within a gorgeously crafted story. Ariel has a way of describing settings that makes you want to see it for yourself. I NEED someone to do an adaptation of this where we flash back and forward between all the timelines. I think this series would do well in a television series format like FOUNDATION on Apple TV+. It is lush with art, visuals, colors, and fashion. Filled to brim with Easter eggs from each book. I loved piecing together family ties to BENEATH but I am so emotionally unwell over certain things we learn about their fate. We are in for pain on that series I fear. Enough action to make you never want to put it down but also have to put it down because you need to remind yourself to breathe in different moments.

I can’t wait to be able to post my full review but I refuse to let any kind of spoiler linger on this review because I want everyone to experience the emotional throws of this book. I want everyone to have the absolute time of their life getting stuck in the chokehold that is Emeline’s story.

This book is about the power of women.

I will leave you with this, no spoiler take: I have never been so happy to be 1. Right about a character and 2. Happy things went the way they did. There was a moment where I texted a friend and said “I think I’m going to have a nervous breakdown if this is headed where I think it is.” It did but we’re okay (well, okay is putting it lightly. We’re unwell but in the best way.)

This is the series to read right now. Pick it up. You won’t regret it. Ariel that ending was diabolically incredible.

AHHHHHHHH I need these books faster!! (But also I get it, craft your masterpiece queen. This is just torture, that’s all.)

Being approved for one of my auto-buy authors’ highly anticipated books means dropping everything to binge-read, and that’s exactly what I did!

Ariel Sullivan, you are a mastermind. The way you describe this world and its brokenness while holding up a mirror to show how these characters got to where they are, all while highlighting their strength, is absolutely incredible. I am in awe. I love so many of these characters, and I cannot wait to see how this series continues to build. Also, I need an immediate reread because there were SO many Easter eggs!

There were so many moments in this book when I had to set it down, take a deep breath, and then reread what I’d just read. There were fist pumps, shock, tears, smiles, and laughter. This book brought ALL the emotions.

I will say, I never switched sides. I know who I want for our FMC, and as we got to know both of them better, for me, it wasn’t even close. 👀

The side characters and the connections to Unit Seven and Beneath were masterful. I was already Team Gregory, but a few others from Em’s birth family are definitely winning me over!

The war has begun. The seeds have been planted. And I truly don’t know if I’ll ever have the words to express just how much I loved this book. It’s living rent-free in my mind, and I have a feeling it’ll be there for a LONG time.

Infinite stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thank you to Ariel Sullivan, Ballantine, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

ate this up, no crumbs.

Just—everything I could have wanted in a sequel and more. It’s almost 700 pages and I still barreled through it and wanted more desperately by the end.

IN ARIEL WE TRUST!! girl’s got a plan, and while I saw some things coming here they still landed soooo well, and other twists for sure surprised me.

Wow. Just like with Conform, I could not put this book down. While not required, I would recommend reading Beneath prior to Core. There are people/things from Beneath that are referenced in Core. Reading Beneath prior will allow you to pick up all the little details.

This review contains no major spoilers, but may mention minor/vague character or plot details. If you're sensitive to even minor spoilers, you may want to read this review after finishing the book.

I would say my favorite part of this book was getting to know more about Collin. He is one of my favorite kinds of characters, truly morally grey. I love that despite everything, he never lied to Emeline. Frederick was a new character that also was really cool. Similarly to Collin, he always seems to try and help Emeline out indirectly. Nora and Gregory break my heart each book. I love the little ways they show they love each other. I love the way Gregory cares for Nora’s children, calling them ‘ours’. Phillip is as interesting and evasive as always. I love that despite only being ‘vessels’, the women have a significant role in aiding the rebellion. I loved the way Emeline’s mother knew so much about her children and their hearts despite not being able to be a significant part of their lives. While we do get confirmation/denial about who the real reaper is, I love that anyone can take on the title. If you loved Conform, you will definitely love Core. I am very excited for the next book, and even the books in the connected series. I was very honored and excited to get an ARC, and my expectations for this book were met and exceeded. I think the messages and content of this book are very relevant to the current world we live in.

✨ARC Review✨

As someone who thought "Conform" was mediocre, and "Beneath" was a little better, I didn't have incredibly high hopes for this book.

I think this book had some of the improvements I was hoping for with the series continuing. But we still had odd conversations where someone would say something, it wouldn't be addressed until a few lines of dialog later. Circling back in the conversations that felt very odd.

Collin was the winner and saving grace of this book. He carried it through blood, sweat, and tears. I really think he is a great MMC, and I loved the progression of his story. I feel like by the end of the book we did earn the moment between him and Emeline. It felt like a true slow burn with how much we built upon the relationship. I liked the time spent in conversations and moments between them.

Emeline kind of irks me if I am being honest. Semi-spoiler... by the end of this book she gets this title and notoriety, but it doesn't feel earned by her at all. She really hasn't done anything, she is always in the dark, everyone is always doing things around her, but she hasn't done anything herself, so when this title gets pushed onto her it doesn't feel earned at all. She didn't do anything to earn it in my opinion, just was there while she learned what other people did to progress the story and rebellion.

I think the side characters really stepped up this book as well. I really love Gregory and Nora and if they don't get happiness I will actually be angry with the amount of crap they have had to endure. I think this author hates them. I loved more Barrett, him and Bri are incredible. I am also so interested in more Maxwell, he seems like a really fun character that brings a lot of light. I also loved Fredrik and want more. And the small glimpse we got of Mavis, I already adore her. I also want Hal to get happiness too.

Overall, it was fine. I am interested enough to continue with the story, but I still think some more structure and trimming down of the over clarification and conversations going in circles could be improved upon. Also... make Emeline actually do something to earn this type of praise so that you admire her.

This had me hooked early on for sure. There was a lot of action and I was turning pages as fast as possible, trying to absorb new information. I was engrossed and infatuated and utterly consumed by the story and the characters and the hardships. Mostly.

Emeline drives me nuts sometimes. I’m not really sure where the justification for everyone praising her so much comes from. So much of her time was spent missing queues and lashing out at everyone that tried to help her. I would’ve loved to see a little bit—like 20% more—intelligence and cunning from her. She just wasn’t nearly as clever as everyone seems to give her credit for. That’s not to say she wasn’t clever, it’s just not overwhelming.

I am also STILL #TeamCollin till I die. Hal can kick rocks for all I’m concerned. He’s selfish and a liar. Collin at least didn’t let Emeline make important decisions about him when she didn’t have all the information. Can’t say the same abt Hal!!!

PSA: I did not read Beneath before reading this and feel like I haven’t missed out on any connections or anything.

Thank you so much to Ballentine, Ariel Sullivan, and NetGalley for the eARC of this books! 😊

Holy Moly HONORED to have read this early. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.

“You were always going to be a goodbye”
“You said you needed something to defend yourself with.” He stepped away from me, sheathing the knife. He clipped it to his belt. “Here I am.” - swoon.

I COULDN’T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN. I am so invested. Fast paced. Constantly trying to figure out what’s going to happen. Little dark and gritty. The TENSION!!!

I genuinely don’t know what Ariel Sullivan laces her books with, but I need more of it. The love triangle? The twists? The way you think you know what’s coming, and maybe you do, but then the way it all comes to light still manages to surprise you? SO well done.

There is something SO unsettling about dystopian books that feel just a little too close to reality. My 2010s divergent dreams but better. The angst, the tension, the genuinely scary parallels to our world… I was hooked.

This is the kind of story that makes you say “just one more chapter” over and over. I absolutely loved this story.. I love a certain male character sooooo much …I need answers, I need more, and I need the next book immediately! ❤️

I cried so much reading this book, and I loved every single second of it. Ariel Sullivan is an absolute mastermind.... the way she plotted this story is honestly jaw-dropping. Starting the journey in "Core" and then looping back to the prequel in "Beneath" adds an incredible layer of emotional significance, easily cementing this entire series as one of my all time favorite dystopian worlds. Her ingenuity and creativity are unmatched.

Driven by the perfectly done pacing, the writing is so intensely immersive that when the story reaches some of the most explosive peaks that I genuinely felt the adrenaline and my pulse was pounding. My Apple Watch asked me if I was exercising - that just shows Ariel Sullivan's PHENOMENAL talent to make her readers feel every single moment.

I never could have guessed in my wildest dreams where this story was going, and the next book ..... BUCKLE UP.

If you want to be completely consumed in a high-stakes fight against oppression (complete with a heavy layer of gripping secrecy and a slow-burn love triangle you will ACTUALLY root for) then this series is an absolute must-read. It was impossible to put down, I had a death grip on my kindle.
Thank you to Ariel Sullivan and I am so grateful for your brilliant plotting mind. Thank you also to Ballantine and NetGalley- I am forever thankful.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 star read!! Core begins where Conform left off and let me tell you that this sequel is one of the best I’ve read this year. Emeline deals with the constant betrayals and the subjugation and oppression of the women who are considered as only vessels to the elite and illum. Throughout this book we can feel the sadness and loneliness Emeline is dealing with. I love how she is determined not to give in to the ways of the illum by questioning everything and refusing to obey the rules. She goes through the motions of being a good mate but does not break. She’s determined to break the system and free those living in a cruel society. As far as the love triangle it is super difficult to choose Team Collin or Team Hal. In conform it was easier to choose who we thought would be the better man for Emeline. But the author makes both men so likeable in this book that they both could be good for her. They both have flaws and have made mistakes regarding Emeline but both are truly in love with her. She struggles with her feelings for both men but ultimately makes the rebellion her priority. She focuses on saving the lives of the Minors and Majors while pretending to be a cooperative mate. Some twists and surprises at the end set up for the next book. The pacing of the book is perfect and you will not want to put it down!!

I received an advanced copy from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book was 5 stars! ⭐️ So easy to read, and the depth of the story was amazing. The way she brought back all the subtle hints was so well done and appreciated because it’s easy to miss those little details and then suddenly be like, hold on, what just happened?!

The storyline is just… chef’s kiss. 🤌 The last 25% of the book had me reading as fast as I possibly could because I just needed to know what happened next!

The characters are SO good, and I genuinely can’t get enough of them. She could turn this into a ten-book series, giving every character their own POV, and I would read every single one!

Her writing is top-tier for me. There’s no overuse of words, and her descriptions are so effortless to understand and picture. Everything just flows so naturally.

I’m so appreciative of the opportunity to read this early, but I already need MORE! 🖤

Advanced reader copy thanks to NetGalley.

I’ve been so excited for this sequel that I had to drop everything to pick this up the moment it became available. And just like the first book, I couldn’t put it down. Something about the writing is so addictive.

I won’t give any spoilers but I’ll say that I’m very pleased with where the story went as far as the MMC 😏 the way their story transformed was so satisfying and felt very earned by the end.

The world building has expanded a lot with this sequel, as well as the prequel, Beneath. By the end, I really felt I learned so much about the history and the ever evolving characters. In turn, all the new information has opened up a lot of opportunity for the remaining books in this series.

Now wishing I didn’t have to wait so long for the next book! 5/5

Let me start by saying I am HONORED to be chosen to read Core early. Thank you Ariel, NetGalley, & the publisher. I loved being back in this world, seeing Emeline’s growth, and of course the romance. The yearning was everything.

I had a very hard time putting this book down. There were scenes that had my heart pounding, eyes full of tears, and then gasping at a reveal. I am excited to go back through the book and look for Easter Eggs because they were definitely scattered about.

We got to see more of Emeline’s friendships with Nora, Violet, and Rose and some great messages about female strength and autonomy. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

Review is based on an ARC received from NetGalley.

Alright… Did I enjoy this book? Yes. Was I a little disappointed? Also, yes. 😬

I was SO excited to be back in the clouds with some of my favorite characters! I’m Team Collin for life, so I was more than ready for some angst and those mysterious Collin x Emeline interactions. And let me tell you, that part absolutely DELIVERED. I LIVED for it.

But the overall execution of the story felt a little… off? There were two distinct moments when I had to go back and reread entire sections because I genuinely thought I’d missed something. The transitions felt so abrupt that I was left wondering if there were pieces missing from the story. I’m not sure if that was an issue with the ARC or if those gaps will still be present in the final publication, but either way, I found myself feeling pretty confused.

Another thing that didn’t quite work for me was the POV structure. As much as I ADORE getting the love interest’s (or in this case interests 🫣) POV, I don’t think it adds much to the story when those chapters are sprinkled in so infrequently. I would’ve preferred either a true alternating POV experience or for the story to stick with the FMC’s perspective. The way it was handled just felt a little inconsistent.

My FAVORITE part of this book, though, was the connection between Beneath and Core. Of course, there were connections to Conform as well, but this one felt especially full-circle. Returning to Haven and recognizing certain names? 👀 I was HERE for it! Those little connections made me so happy, and I loved seeing how everything tied back to the earlier books.

Overall, I really did enjoy this book, I promise! But I also can’t deny that it felt a little rough around the edges. Some of the storylines introduced felt unnecessary or were given more attention than they needed, and considering the first book is around 400 pages while this sequel clocks in at over 600, I can’t help but feel that this story could’ve been significantly shorter without losing any of its substance.

For now, I’m holding off on settling on my final star rating. I’d love to revisit it once the finished copy is released so I can compare it to the ARC and see whether some of my concerns have been addressed. I’m also really curious to see where the next book takes us. Will some of those loose threads I didn’t even realize were hanging end up tying together in the next installment? I’d like to think so! 🤞🏻

So, while this wasn’t quite the reading experience I’d hoped for, I’m still invested, still curious, and definitely not ready to leave these characters behind just yet.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.

I must begin by saying the silent, brooding man is my literary weakness. Collin fits the bill - perfectly. As we uncovered his actual personality, I remained a loyal woman.
Love triangles are usually a major ick for me but this series does it so flawlessly, in a way where it doesn’t feel like one. The fact that this is achieved with first person POV is a major feat.

I love that we get into the head of other characters in this novel. It is done tastefully where we still understand the story is mainly driven by Emeline’s POV with occasional sneak peeks into other characters.

The expansion of her relationships adds a lot if webs and intricacies to the plot, which is expected in a series like this one. I like that they helped drive the plot rather than taking away from the real focus. I also enjoyed seeing new links between characters be revealed - some were surprising & others were alluded to.

The plot itself had impeccably placed twists and heartbreaks. There were moments where I wondered who would make it to the next page and moments where I wondered what was going on in the Illum. Seriously - the Illum. I don’t know what to say or how to react to them. I have so many thoughts/emotions and in the current world where technology is on the edge of absolutely taking over I feel like this novel comes at the perfect time. It serves as a gentle reminder and shows us that above all else we are human - flawed, emotional, creative. Must I go on?

Emeline’s ability to bring together so many in the name of a revolution shows this. Women empowerment in the age of voiceless women was a beautiful turning point in this series. It would not have felt the same if the men were in charge.

Lastly, I have to mention the reaper. The reaper is the reason we’re here, right? The person who sparked this wonderful chaos. To avoid spoilers, I will simply say that the transition was surprising but it felt right. It added to the beauty of this novel and made me feel pride in being a woman.

“You said you needed something to defend yourself with. Here I am.”

Core was one of my most anticipated sequels, possibly ever, and it exceeded my expectations. Conform is one of my all-time favorite books and the title I recommend to just about everyone, so my hopes for this continuation were incredibly high. Core delivered.

Picking up right where Conform left off, with Emeline at a crossroads, Core is filled with twists and turns that left me staring at the wall, trying to process what I had just read.

It takes a LOT for a book or movie to make me cry. Core made me cry not once, not twice, but THREE times. This story is deeply emotional and powerful, and its impact stayed with me long after I finished.

The character development, the expanding world, and the themes of empowerment made this an unforgettable read. The author built on everything I loved about Conform while giving this installment its own emotional depth.

If you haven’t read Conform and Beneath, there’s still time to catch up before February. When Core releases, clear your schedule. Trust me.

Thank you, Ariel Sullivan, for writing such a masterpiece! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to Ballantine Books for the opportunity to read this book in advance.

I absolutely loved Core! Ariel Sullivan has such a wonderful talent for pulling readers into her stories, and this installment had me completely invested from beginning to end. Between the unraveling secrets, shifting loyalties, and ever increasing stakes surrounding the rebellion, I couldn't put it down. The world continues to become more complex, and Sullivan does a fantastic job of keeping the tension high while making you genuinely care about the characters and their journeys.

What I loved most was watching Emeline finally begin to come into her own and embrace her power. Seeing her grow stronger, become more confident, and start taking control of her own destiny was incredibly satisfying. Her character development has been one of my favorite aspects of this series, and I absolutely love the direction Sullivan is taking her. The storytelling is phenomenal, the emotional investment is real, and I cannot wait to see what comes next. An easy five stars for me!

Thank you to NetGalley and Ballantine Books for providing an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you infinitely to Thousand Voices, Ballantine, NetGalley, and last but certainly not least, Ariel Sullivan for an advanced copy of my most anticipated release of 2027.

My jaw is actually on the floor. I actually debated not reading Conform last year because I was hesitant to start another unfinished series and I’m so glad I picked it up anyway. Despite reading Conform in December it was easily a favorite book of the year and Beneath and now Core are easily in my top five (if not top two) of this year.

I have zero words to say about this book that wouldn’t include a spoiler so all I’ll say is be prepared for Conform 2.0 in every way. Even more intricate and interwoven plot lines, complex characters and stories not exclusively centered around romance, and plot twists which are… extremely poignant.

I cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy when this comes out (please let her go on tour again!) and I know this is premature but I cannot wait for the next installment!
