Prior to his first professional work, Tynion was a student of Scott Snyder's at Sarah Lawrence College. A few years later, he worked as for Vertigo as Fables editor Shelly Bond's intern. In late 2011, with DC deciding to give Batman (written by Snyder) a back up feature, Tynion was brought in by request of Snyder to script the back ups he had plotted. Tynion would later do the same with the Batman Annual #1, which was also co-plotted by Snyder. Beginning in September 2012, with DC's 0 issue month for the New 52, Tynion will be writing Talon, with art by Guillem March. In early 2013 it was announced that he'd take over writing duties for Red Hood and the Outlaws in April.
Tynion is also currently one of the writers in a rotating team in the weekly Batman Eternal series.
I recently stated I wanted to try more horror books and that Tynion IV seems to be the MVP of it in comics. I went into this thinking it was a spin-off but this is actually more of an event book - think Avengers: Infinity wars but without having watched any of the other films.
As such all I can say about the book is that it isn't new reader friendly and probably was never designed to be as such. I do credit them for including a reading order of everything previously in order to get the most out of the series, and this will be invaluable as I attempt to read the back catalogue which I already own.
The writing is good in the sense that it all feels very conspiratorial and power politics. It reminds me of succession crossed with sopranos/game of thrones. But it doesn't really help new readers understand who people are, and I can see how it would be obtrusive to long time readers.
The art is good, even if it mostly has to deal with people talking in grand old halls which is never the best place for artists to shine. There is a page involving a murder scene that is particularly gruesome showing promise if and when this series goes down darker paths though.
Overall this reminds me of books like "absolute Green Lantern" where I can fully appreciate this is a well crafted comic but that it really is part of a much bigger and more complicated story. It's an easy recommendation for existing fans but for new readers I think you (and I) are better off picking up a trade of vol 1 "something is killing the children" - it probably costs the same as this issue if you find a sale somewhere. For those wanting to check out Tynion IV's work we may be better dropping in on his brand new "Odin" series later this month.
Overall impression = 3/5 Writing = 3/5 Art = 3/5
Will I read the next issue? No, I need to read the back catalogue and hopefully if I enjoy I'll eventually get around to the next issue or trade collection.
Wait for the trade collection? I imagine fans of the series are going to want to know if there will be a new king and who it will be sooner rather than later.
Did I need to read previous issues/series? I'd say it's essential otherwise it's like watching only the final season of "succession"
Will I read previous issues I feel like I need to read EVERYTHING and fortunately I have all the trades courtesy of a humble deal last year.
I was uncertain if this would gel, what with the art style, but Cecilia’s derangement coupled with the sentiment in the house that’s pro Erica, well, things will get interesting.
