Two rivals forced together by a curse? What’s not to like? Apparently, a lot.
To be fair, this is not a bad book by any means. I think this is a very sweet and basic story that could work as a palate cleanser. But I’ve read a lot of romance lately and the usual formulas just aren't cutting it for me right now, so I found myself getting annoyed with a lot of it. And that’s why it’s getting two stars.
Here’s what I didn’t like:
* Too much telling: The book starts with a boring, info-dumpy life story. I was basically reading a list of why they hate each other, followed by a list of what they do at "Ye Olde Spirit Tours" and "Ye Olde Spirit Shop”, etc. (side note: am I the only one annoyed with the amount of times I had to read these words? 44 times!! Could they not just say tour or shop?). I wish this had been structured more naturally, letting me pick things up on my own. It also felt like I was being rushed through the fun moments, but forced to read boring details like them brushing their teeth.
* The Rivalry: Rory is bitter because Ezra is a know-it-all who is good at his job. Understandable, I guess? But the rivalry is done so poorly. Most of the time I just thought they were acting like children. For example, when they find out they are booked on the same tour, Rory immediately gets her mother to step in and fix it. She literally screams “Mom!”. Seriously? Aren’t they both adults? It was an immediate ick for me.
* The Romance: These two are clearly into each other from page one, spending the first chapters thinking how attractive they find one another. I’m not the biggest fan of this setup and I also don’t think it was executed well so it was a no for me. I’m not even going into specifics on the third-act breakup, but I thought it was the most boring and unnecessary breakup ever.
* Other things: The dirty talk felt forced and unnatural. And I really didn’t like some of the things that were said like: “You are a test i could never be ready for”. I get that he’s a professor but this isn’t cute. I also don’t like reading about real brands in books (iphones, ring cameras, youtube, jeopardy!, etc), but that’s 100% on me. it's a pet peeve of mine.
Forcing myself to finish this was a mistake, and I absolutely should have DNF’d it.

Two workplace rivals being cursed into remaining in close proximity by a matchmaking ghost or else nothing but bad luck will find them? Yes please! Entities to Lovers by author Mallory Marlowe was such a witty and entertaining experience from beginning to end. This is a story that reads with ease with the steady pacing helping the plot to progress forward in a way that feels natural. I’ve been really leaning into the ‘summerween’ vibes this summer which made Rory and Ezra’s story the perfect read to fit my mood reading brain. I really enjoyed how heavily this book leans into the impact that the paranormal can have upon the living and the importance in having authentic mediums that can help to bridge that communication gap. This was pleasantly filled with compelling and emotional dialogue that approaches the topics of mental health struggles, anxiety, asexual representation and perhaps a touch of burnout in a way that feels lighthearted and yet, still impactful. The banter was fun and I greatly enjoyed the (no pun intended) liveliness that the several ghostly entities brought on-page and into the vibes of the overall story. I do wish that we could’ve gotten some more backstory on some the ghosts that have recurring appearances throughout the book, but overall this is a strong story that reads with ease and is perfect to dive into throughout the colder months.
Aurora ‘Rory’ Woods definitely felt like the biggest challenge for me within the first half of her story with her tough exterior and (at times) unpredictable responses making it difficult to understand her emotional complexities. Something I immediately recognised is the fear she carries about being ‘replaceable’ and feeling insignificant to the people around her. I empathised with the way she leans into her workplace persona during the ghost tours as a way that she can pretend to be something that (she believes) she isn’t capable of in a safe and secure way. Rory’s kindness isn’t something that will be typically perceived in a loud and vibrant manner. It’s soft and private in the way she gladly assists the ghosts that seek her out in their desperation to be seen and known after years of solitude. She can be brash and reactive when her emotional sensitivities feel attacked which is something we get to see Rory address as her story continues to progress. Her passion for her craft shines through the pages alongside the love and devotion that she harbours for her mother. Her commitment to running the family store and her desire to be somebody that can mother can be proud of helped me to better understand Rory overall. I loved getting to witness Rory’s progression as she begins to internalise the lessons that the curse is actively working to make her understand for her own benefit. I adored her asexual representation and the vocalised acceptance that she doesn’t fit into the standard mould when it comes to dating and relationships which is perfectly okay. Rory undergoes a deep emotional transformation from beginning to end and I largely enjoyed getting to see her learn how to trust in herself as she recognises her strength over time.
Despite being academically accomplished with a huge passion for attaining as much knowledge as his brain can hold, Ezra Blackwell continues to feel deeply insecure about how ‘behind’ he feels within his career in comparison to the people around him. It broke my heart to see how little value Ezra has within himself despite all of the wonderful things that he has managed to achieve. He’s a deeply feeling and emotional man who struggles with knowing how to voice his own wants and needs in fear of not being enough to want long-term. I would’ve loved to have gotten more depth on his past relationships to greater explain this deep-rooted fear that he carries over being worthy enough to be wanted within a lasting relationship. His relationship with his brother clearly means a lot to him but also lacked in the depth that I’d hoped to see alongside his love for his parents. The concept of letting the people Ezra loves the most down largely plays a huge role in his character development and I just think strengthening those emotional bonds would’ve greatly benefitted showcasing his struggles throughout the book. I will admit that something about a man with an ear piercing, eyeliner and painted nails seems to do it for me which makes it no surprise how often I wanted to swoon in response to Ezra. This is a man who is down bad for a woman determined to hate him and I found it really entertaining to see how much joy he found in antagonising Rory. His ability to pull her fiery personality to the forefront was hilarious and there’s no denying that I did greatly adore Ezra overall as character, alongside the dedication he has towards being a role model for his students. He’s a secret softie and hopeless romantic that has only ever yearned for an earnest and honest love story to claim as his own… and I loved getting to join his chaotic journey towards securing his own happy ending.
I really enjoyed getting to witness both Rory and Ezra become challenged on their surface level perceptions of one another as their conversations get deeper and more vulnerable. It’s easy to make assumptions on somebody you don’t actually have any depth on which made their interactions more interesting as their narrative begins to unravel with the truth of their insecurities. It felt really rewarding to see the pair finally break down their metaphorical walls and converse their feelings as they’re faced with the realisation with not only just how wrong they’ve been… but also how alike they truly are. It becomes very clear that their rivalry has been largely stemmed from the insecurity and jealousy in a comparison that never needed to exist in the first place. Getting to see Rory and Ezra begin to recognise and understand one another felt like a pivotal moment in their relationship development that I loved getting to see this being forced upon two equally stubborn individuals that would never have gotten to this point without paranormal intervention. I personally really enjoy the tension that can be derived between two main characters that clearly feel attracted to one another from day one whilst essentially feeling betrayed by their own preferences due to an inability to get along. Their heated banter left me smiling on numerous occasions and I loved getting to see the developing tender interactions they manage to share once shedding the protective masks that both characters often wear. The yearning left me swooning and I was equally pleasantly surprised at the heat that the spice scenes brought into their dynamic. Rory and Ezra really go through it in this book and I loved getting to see their stubbornness and determination in combating their curse together as a pair. Their love story feels hard-earned and there’s no denying how giddy I felt in my joy at their well deserved happily ever after.
Entities to Lovers is a very bingeable read that will be perfect to add to your spooky season TBR. This was my first book by Marlowe and will most definitely not be my last… especially with the end giving confirmation that we can expect Micah’s story next which I’m very excited for.

I want to start this review by saying that 3 stars isn’t a bad rating. I didn’t hate this book at all, I just didn’t love it as much as this author’s previous two books.
The tension felt lower, the storyline was much more in depth and while the romance was fine, the love interests didn’t completely win me over. That being said, I will absolutely continue reading anything this author writes because her debut Love and Other Conspiracies is AMAZING. Whether you end up loving this book or not, I highly recommend picking that one up.
Some books just aren’t for everyone and unfortunately this one fell into that category for me. I absolutely loved the cursed elements and the ghosts but Rory and Ezra weren’t my favorite book couple. Their relationship never fully clicked for me and at times they felt like two people who wouldn’t naturally fit together outside the pages of the story. There were also moments where their indifference toward each other felt a little strange.
I do want to emphasize again that I didn’t dislike this book. I think my expectations were just higher because I enjoyed Marlowe’s other books so much. When an author has already set the bar that high for me, it’s hard not to compare and I’m probably being a little extra picky because of it.

The ultimate comfy, cozy Halloween read with a sweet happily ever after. I loved the forced proximity setup and how naturally Rory and Ezra’s relationship progressed—their competitive snark with each other, and Ezra’s acceptance of Rory’s paranormal side was so heartwarming. Temperance’s sassy, fiery spirit (pun intended) was fun to see it pushing the pair together. Watching Rory’s mum put herself back out there added to the story, and I really appreciated how the main characters resolved their conflict. A wonderfully charming seasonal romance!

Review copy from Edelweiss and Library Journal. I am once again in love with another adorable couple from Mallory Marlowe. Rory and Ezra were the perfect rivals to lovers, seeing that attraction and similarities were hiding under the friction and animosity. They certainly used that friction in the slow burn of their romance. It can be hard to balance that in a forced proximity storyline but this was excellent, plus ONE BED! I loved the historical tidbits throughout and the appearance of our couple from Love & Other Conspiracies. Highly recommend for a spooky season read, ghosts galore and more!

Rory and Ezra were such a fun pair to follow. Their banter was so good, and I loved that even while they were constantly trying to one-up each other, it was pretty obvious there was something more underneath. The curse forcing them to stay close together led to so many funny moments, but it also gave them the chance to really get to know each other.
The setting was probably one of my favorite parts, well that and the meddling ghost. A haunted spirit shop, ghost tours through Boston, cursed objects, and a medium who actually talks to ghosts? It was the perfect mix of cozy and just a little spooky. I also really liked that beneath all the humor, both Rory and Ezra were working through their own insecurities, so their relationship had a lot more depth than I expected.
If you’ve read Love and Other Conspiracies, you’ll be happy to see some familiar faces pop up, but this can absolutely be read on its own.

Mallory Marlowe has just been bumped up to a must read author for me. This was so delightful and cute.
I knew I was going to be obsessed with Ezra the moment he was introduced. He wears rings and has tattoos!! He's funny!! He's a sweetie pie!! Like that's a man.
The banter and chemistry was so good in this. I know opposites attract is a great trope and all that, but I love when book couples feel so perfectly matched. Need my book couples to feel like soulmates so when I finish I know they're going to be together forever. God, that first kiss was everything.

Entities to Lovers was such a fun and easy read. With the ghost tours, psychic readings, séances, and matchmaking ghost, this honestly feels like the perfect romance to pick up during fall or around Halloween.
I really enjoyed Rory and Ezra as characters, especially when they were together. I loved their banter and the whole enemies-to-lovers dynamic, although it was definitely more Rory trying to convince herself that Ezra got on her nerves while also clearly being attracted to him. Ezra was actually such a nice guy, and I really liked him. It was fun watching Rory slowly let her guard down and seeing their relationship develop.
The paranormal elements added a fun twist without taking over the story. At its heart, this is still a light contemporary romance, just with ghosts, curses, and a little supernatural chaos thrown into the mix.
Overall, this was a really enjoyable read. It was light, fun, easy to get into, and exactly the kind of book I can see myself recommending as a perfect fall romance.

Rory and Ezra are rival tour guides at Rory's mom's shop of curiosities. When they accidentally anger a spirit during a tour, they get cursed and the only way terrible things don't happen to them is if they are physically together. What follows is a bunch of forced proximity and Rory realizes that maybe Ezra isn't quite as terrible and pompous as she thought he was. For Ezra's part? He's always been incredibly intrigued by Rory and this extended time together only exacerbates that.
The banter here was honestly delightful! I loved the mismatch between Rory and Ezra and how he never got his feathers ruffled by her. I loved seeing how the forced proximity really improved their relationship and allowed Rory in particular to see Ezra in a different light. I loved seeing how much they came to understand each other. Their chemistry was just so so good and their steamy scenes absolutely added to their relationship and moved things forward. I loved seeing them both start to be a little vulnerable and honest with each other.
And I loved loved our meddling spirits/ghosts! There were quite a few from helpful Clementine, to mischievous Luna, to the ever present Temperance Talbot who initiates the curse against our two main characters. I thought they added so much to the story and was honestly just delighted by them.
We also get an extended cameo from Hayden and Hallie (Love and Other Conspiracies) and it was just simply delightful!!! I loved seeing our favorite believer and nonbeliever back on page :)

First of all, I want to say that I’m a huge fan of Mallory Marlowe. Love and Other Conspiracies and Love at First Sighting are two of my favourite contemporary romances. I love their little supernatural peaks and the banter is always top tier.
So, I went into this one with very high expectations and I was a little bit disappointed unfortunately… but I really think it’s a me problem and not the book.
I loved the setting: perfect for spooky season. Boston during fall is such a vibe. I liked the little trip to maine with the lobster overload representation (very funny). I also like that the MC were guides for a ghost tour.
My problem was that I didn’t really like the main characters. They were both so insecure and I got tired of them pretty fast. I just couldn’t connect or relate to their choices and inner monologues. I’m also not a huge fan of rivals to lovers so…
Also, I was a little bored with the plot. Beside the curse there wasn’t anything really going on. It was also really obvious what they had to do to break the curse and it was just frustrating at time about how blind the MC were.
The writing is just as good as her other novels. This one was just not the one for me. However, I will read ANYTHING this author writes!

My Summerween era continues with Entities to Lovers, and it was everything I wanted it to be.
Rory and Ezra are faux-rival ghost tour guides who upset a meddlesome matchmaking spirit. The pair are cursed by terrible luck unless they’re physically near each other. And if they bicker? Things go haywire. Paranormal forced proximity = romcom gold!
I adored it all: autumnal New England vibes, one-liners that had me chuckling aloud as I highlighted them on my Kindle, and a heart-warming love story. As a greater Boston girlie, I wish I could visit the shop and take the tour for real!

Add this to your fall TBR immediately! This was the perfect fall read! I read this for summerween and I was kicking my feet giggling while reading it!
This book was rivals to lovers done right! I absolutely loved the banter that Rory and Ezra had. Their quips towards each other is one of the best parts of the book! And once they get together 👀 girl they are the cutest couple and I am so obsessed with them.

Rory has a super cool vibe - she's a medium, a ghost tour guide, and runs a shop where she serves as a psychic. Ezra is a history professor. These two have very different personalities.

5 MASSIVE STARS FOR RORY AND EZRA MY BABIES ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
God this was just a great time! Im slowly getting more and more into paranormal romances and Mallory Marlowe has solidified herself as one of my favourites and I cannot wait to go through her backlist because I know there’s some cameos in this 😏
One thing I love about romance authors like Mallory is that she knows exactly what the story needs at every given time and I was laughing, swooning and tearing up because I felt so deeply for these flawed and real characters and that’s just testament to her writing.
The romance. These two cannot stand each other at the start of the book and it brings so much tension and banter into play that really set the dynamic of their relationship. Ezra has always had a thing for Rory and I mean.. kinda vice versa although Rory would probably say otherwise, so when they end up getting cursed by a matchmaking ghost whilst doing a ghost tour the only way their lives don’t turn upside down is if they stick close together.. they have a lot of time to quash old feuds and get along 🤷♀️ Ezra and Rory were just a pleasure to read and they both brought so much heart and personality to the book. I just love them so very much.
The sex. Brilliant. The explicit scenes were done extremely well and added to the relationship. It didn’t feel out of character on either end. I think Rory being asexual was done extremely well too and you could feel her vulnerability during these scenes and Ezra’s reassurance was chefs kiss!!
The writing. Quick and witty without feeling rushed and overdone, I loved how we were allowed to stay in so many important moments. The descriptions were excellent and I felt like I was almost on the ghost tours with them!
I really have no notes. This book is fun but it also hits deep with some personal issues that Ezra and Rory have to face. Although theres obviously paranormal elements at play it’s also a very candid look at personality types and how we might tend to avoid and push people away out of fear of failure or loneliness.I could relate to both of them so much especially Rory.
Overall the easiest 5 stars. So much heart and humour and I cannot wait to read the next one because we already know who the hero is gonna be 😏

Rivals to Lovers + Ghost Tours + “I like you but I hate you” + Curse
This book follows Rory and Ezra, rival ghost tour hosts for a local oddities shop. They love to hate one another and their banter is hilarious! One day, Rory’s mom, aka the boss, books Ezra and Rory on the same tour and they end up bickering so much that they accidentally end up breaking an artifact at a haunted house. Thus a curse is set upon them and every time they try and go their own way and live their life, bad things happen. They realize the only way to make it through the day is to be in each others presence.
The forced proximity makes them realize they have more things in common than they realized and soon the feelings of hate and competition start to change into something more curious and intimate.
What I liked and disliked: I loved the crossover of characters from Mallory’s other novels! I loved seeing them pop up again. What I didn’t like was the third act breakup. It felt unnecessary and kind of random and rushed. I wish there was a third act conflict that they had to work together to solve but not a breakup.
I have enjoyed every book from this author and I can’t wait to read more from her in the future!

What sounds more fall than a book based in Boston around Halloween? Add in the FMC working at her mom’s “Ye Olde Spirit Shop”, who happens to be a paranormal medium? It’s a setup for the perfect cozy fall romance to read this season.
Entities to Lovers focuses on Rory and Ezra, two workplace rival ghost tour-guides who get cursed with bad luck unless they are in close proximity of each other. The only thing is aside from their own self-destructive thoughts, I couldn’t buy the “rivals” in this. While I was entertained, something about this story just didn’t possess me. I felt for these characters on a surface level (though I did really feel for some of Rory’s turmoil she had to break through), and that’s ok. I still think this one will land with many for the silly ride it is. Again, the setting and atmosphere is screaming spooky-season coziness and I enjoyed that a lot.

i’ve read mallory’s first two books & loved them so knew i had to pick this one up as soon as i could! i will say it might be my least favorite mallory but it was still cute. i loved the fmc rory but didn’t really like the mmc ezra LOL. usually nerds are right up my alley but he just wasn’t attractive to me & kind of a pansy 😳 whoops. (and listen. i know authors like for things to be real sometimes but come on don’t make him 5’8 let that be ONE thing you go crazy with!!)
this kinda moved crazy fast for me, it went from hate to love SO FAST. i did love the paranormal aspect, especially luna 🥰 also the creepy doll being nice was a great turn of events & i really liked that. i will say this does make me want to go on another ghost tour. (loved the cameo of hallie and hayden!!! and i want THAT scene to be released!!!)

Love love loved this. thank you to the girl on threads who always posts the read nows because I was able to come across this. after reading Mallory Marlowe’s first book, I knew I wanted to read more by her and was so excited to hear she was writing another. A tad similar to the last book I read but this stood out with several differences. It was truly so good, and made me want to go to Boston and take a ghost tour. (I recently was on one which bumped this arc up on my list.) both of the main characters were interesting, both in their good qualities and flaws, and the book was well written. There were a few bumps here and there or decisions I did not agree with from characters but no major plot holes, or in universe rules that don’t make sense. Overall a good read with great vibes for Halloween time.

What is it with romances lately and the emotional below-the-belt punches? 😅
This was a genuinely fun time that pulled me out of a nearly two-month long reading slump. Full of spooky season vibes, exciting banter and protagonists with insecurities that hit far too close to home, Enemies to Lovers is a great addition to Marlowe’s other works.
While I do wish we had gotten a little bit more of why our two MCs were enemies and a more gentle transition into their love for each other, I still think this is very much a worthwhile read and an all around good time.
Also, Clementine was a genuine delight. Who knew a haunted doll would have me cackling in an empty living room?

I really enjoyed this! The bantering was the highlight for me. I love that a ghost played Cupid.
The curse of bad luck force Rory and Erza to be in force proximity to each other and allow them to discover their similarities as well as traits they never seen otherwise. Twin flames - I love this idea. Someone that accepts you for who you are.
I like the foreshadowing at the beginning before the curse happened. When Rory said on the ghost tour prior that “Temperance Talbot was also quite the romantic, often hosting matchmaking dinners — with a spooky twist. And that is exactly what this story was all about!

Mallory Marlowe has written a perfectly cozy spooky romance. I think cursing our MCs together was a fun idea, and I do love both of the characters. This book certainly feels lower stakes and it dragged a bit in the 2nd half. As someone in academia I found a few “that is not how that works” things in relation to Ezra’s job but I certainly identified with his frustration in that world. Honestly I almost completely missed the hints at cameos from her first book but I wasn’t really thinking of them as related at all. It’s fun and relatively lighthearted and I absolutely would recommend it to others who enjoy her books.

This is low stakes, medium heat and a very funny book about rival ghost tour hosts who find themselves cursed by a mischievous spirit. Rory and Ezra must stick together (almost very literally) in order to fend off the absolute luck of all time.
I enjoyed myself immensely while reading because the chemistry is so believable, the banter hits and the setting is perfect for spooky season. I also loved how non traditional the characters were described, we need more men that aren’t giants who are sculpted from marble.

What I loved: The spooky vibes were so, so fun. I wish I could visit the shop in real life?! I also loved seeing Hayden and Hallie make an appearance in this book. Love and Other Conspiracies was my first read of Mallory Marlowe's and I would read anything those two are in. I also really loved Ezra. What a fun character! Altogether, I thought the idea of the two main characters being cursed by an ancient (and grumpy) spirit as a way to find their way to each other was super unique.
What wasn't my favorite: The pivot from "I hate you" to "I have loved you all along" felt super quick. I'm not a big fan of that almost "insta-love" idea. It wasn't totally that, but that's the best way I can describe it. It just felt like it happened TOO quick.
Overall, I give this four stars and would absolutely recommend it to my friends and bookstagram community!
