Ugh, this book. Emilia Finn really knows how to balance heart, heat, and humor, and Love Expert is another example of her doing it so freaking well. Your emotions will be destroyed, the chemistry is sizzling, and the humor will have you laughing your head right off in the middle of it all. As with all of Emilia Finn's books, this was a darn good time.

And little Jeremy might just be my favorite part. Gah. I loved that little guy to pieces. He's all rough and tumble and maybe the sweetest kid I've ever read in a single parent romance. He absolutely stole my heart and maybe even the whole book.

So, Billy…

We've met Billy Caster before, and let me tell you, I wasn't so sure I was sold on him in the previous books. He's a grumpy, widowed single dad who lashes out when he's scared. He's got a hard shell, but he's a little ooey gooey in the middle. Even though I wanted to reach through the book and give him a good shake over some of his ridiculous choices, it didn't take long for him to win me over.

And then there's Maggie. She's sassy, independent, struggling, and so stubborn. You can just feel that she's Billy's love match, even if it takes her a little while to catch up. The grumpy x sunshine energy is a real, breathing thing in this one, and I loved watching them figure each other out. Maybe I could connect with them because I was born in the nineteen hundreds too. 😂

I love catching up with all the other characters in the Love & War series. Gosh, they just feel like friends at this point. Seeing Tommy, Alana, Chris, Fox, Ollie, Rose, Troopy, Eliza, and I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, was like getting together with the gang again. And Ramone gets bonus points because he made me guffaw, especially when he was giving Billy advice on how to get Maggie. We also get plenty of new characters to keep things fresh, which I loved. Plainview is still Plainview, though. Small-town charm and warts and all.

Now, what didn't I love quite as much? Maggie seemed to get manhandled all the time, Billy could be a little overly rude at times, and Maggie REFUSED to listen to what Billy was actually saying. I also would have liked a little more closure, or at least a change of heart, with Maggie's mom. And while the ending was perfectly acceptable, I would have loved a longer-range epilogue. But honestly, that's mostly because I love these characters so much that I just wanted MORE. These were all pretty minor things overall, but they're the little things that explain why this one is 4 instead of 5 stars because it was pretty darn close.

And when Billy finally gets his junk together, grovels, and makes those grand declarations of love? Yassss! I was cheering and crying and loving every minute of it. And that group chat was the BESSST. I couldn't get enough of that.

At the end of the day, this book had some of my favorite romance things and delivered them just right. Heart, heat, humor, grumpy x sunshine, first loves and second chances, small-town feels, a sweet and sour single dad, and a romance that made me feel ALL the things.

Loved every. Single. Page.

I’ve been loving this series, and this instalment was another total win for me. Emilia’s small‑town found‑family vibes are spot on. These characters genuinely feel like people you’d want in your life.

In the Love Expert we get Billy's story. He's our grumpy, exhausted small‑town cop, raising his eight‑year‑old son Jeremy (who's adorable by the way) alone after losing his wife just 45 minutes after giving birth. He’s a brilliant dad, traumatised by the loss of his wife, and absolutely not looking for love… until Maggie shows up.

Maggie is the girl that got away. She's his childhood sweetheart he loved at eight years old and never forgot. But now she's back, they bicker constantly and it's hard to see how these two will get their HEA.

You see, Maggie is the 'Love Expert' and when she first comes back to town she organises a speed‑dating event. Billy ends up in attendance and winning a prize for her matchmaking services. Cue a string of dates he doesn’t want to go on because he only wants her.

This was such a fun, easy and heartwarming read. I was smiling throughout. It had some really touching moments, great banter, great chemistry and a little boy who stole my heart.

This was a surprise 5 star read. I knew I'd love it. But 5 stars...? I don't hand those out too often, but it absolutely deserves them all!

Love and War round 4! Billy and Maggie were two dummies who knew they loved each other but didn’t know how to navigate it. And BABYYYYY I ate it up!

Billy and Maggie crushed on each other in grade school when Maggie suddenly had to move away. She inherits her grandmothers home and comes back to town after years away. Billy has had a hard go of it since his wife died giving birth and is a little surly and not welcoming.

He ends up winning a “Love Expert” package from Maggie and she sets him up with his “perfect matches”. But they soon come to the conclusion that Maggie is actually the perfect match…

Billy’s son, Jeremy, is such a cute little guy and the relationship he has with Maggie is so special. The text thread at the end really got me. We got my girl Minka for 2.5 seconds! I really enjoy how there’s a connection to her other book worlds in most of her books.

Emilia is a “if she writes it I’m reading it” author so this was obviously an amazing book. You can (and should) start at book 1 - Tell Me You Love Me - so that you get all the backstory for this one.

This started off as a 5-star read for me. It was funny and entertaining. But the further I got, the more I started feeling the length of the book, even though it’s not actually that long.

I really struggle with characters who just… don’t communicate, and we definitely had that here, on both sides. But Billy especially drove me crazy. He’s a grown ass man in his thirties. Being sad or struggling with his emotions doesn’t excuse saying hurtful things and then expecting everyone else to understand him. If you can’t communicate your feelings, go to therapy. I was also annoyed by how much he needed other people to express his feelings for him. Like, please, you are old enough to use your words.

On the other hand, the relationship between Magnolia and Billy’s son (Jeremy) was genuinely adorable. At times, though, it felt more like Magnolia and Jeremy’s story with Billy on the sidelines.

What happens when the girl you had a crush on at 8 years old comes back to your home town, moves in next door and becomes your very own Cupid?
You fumble, mess up, get cranky and end up in competition with your own kid for her love & attention.
Honestly, Maggie, Billy and Jeremy are so well suited from the get go. Like puzzle pieces. The perfect fit,
but sometimes you gotta wobble in a few that aren’t quite right and don’t belong. But they all come together in the end for one beautiful picture. 🫶🏼
I’m so obsessed with how down bad Billy is. So much so that he can’t even regulate his emotions (same) and becomes a grumpy mess. (Again, same). I get it. He’s got a lot to work through. Some closets to empty. And I am so glad he did! 💜

Didn't know I needed this addition to the series until it came! Billy is the small town police officer. He's a grumpy, widowed, single dad to the cutest little kid, and he can't be bothered with any kind of love nonsense. When Maggie struts back into town to live in the house that her grandmother left her, she's caught up in indecision on whether to sell the home, or to stay and try to build an honest life. She quickly gets sucked into to Billy's orbit, and soon finds that he might be the key to help get her "matchmaking" business up and running. What better testament would there be than finding him love?

Their romantic connection is slow and subtle at first, then BAM we're hit with the full force of what's been lingering between them. This was  a great, heartfelt addition to the series.

Oh my heart

Grab your tissues before you start this one! Maggie moves back to town and falls right back in love with the boy she used to know. Except now,he's a grumpy widow with an outgoing little boy. Emotions run high between these 3 at all times, my heart hurt so much for them and so many tears fell. Emilia Finn knows how to balance the sad and the humor, so don't worry, you will laugh as much as cry. Thank you for this emotional story, it was beautiful.

I can always trust Emilia to write characters to fall in love with. Billy is a cranky dad and Maggie is the girl who left before 3rd grade, but neither of them ever forgot the other. Maggie moves in next door and tries to be Billy’s matchmaker, pretending she doesn’t want to be the one going on dates with him.

I sobbed at the hospital scene 😭😭 Always breaking our hearts to them patch them back up!

So good! Once I started this book I couldn’t put it down, and now I’m in a bit of a book hangover after finishing😅. I loved all of the characters and little Jeremy definitely stole the show😂. Seeing how Billy and Maggie came together and overcame their individual obstacles and heartache while having such a great friend group surrounding them and supporting them. I laughed, cried, and had all of the emotions in between. Also…🤞we get a Ramone book!

Emilia Finn Rocks!

I'm terrible at reviews and I'm not always the best at leaving them but with every book, I try anyway because they are just that GOOD!! Sigh. I wish I could teleport myself to these towns and meet every single one of the main characters, side characters, kids, and crazy animals. Every story weaves a magic that continues to draw you in and leave you wanting more. So much more!

Awww

Oh, Billy and Magnolia and Jeremy all just broke my heart and then healed it back up again. Poor Billy and his anxiety about losing those he loves. He didn't really ever heal from his wife's death and refused to let himself even think about love again, until Maggie came back. And Jeremy, who loves his dad so much, but is just a little boy who wants a mom too. He and Maggie were so sweet together. I'm so glad they all worked it out in the end.

Another incredible story by Emilia

Once again Emilia delights us with a beautiful, well developed story about hope, resilience and love. I adore Jeremy, his sweetness and how he has so much love to give. I laughed a lot...I cried a lot and my heart totally broke on that Billy/Jeremy front porch scene. Just thinking about it makes me hurt....but in the end, all was worth it. I loved it... can't wait for Ramone.😁

I sighed

When I finished this book, I released the longest sigh. I love Emilia Finn’s books. Every single one. Every time I finish a book I have fallen in love with a new couple. This time? I fell in love with the whole town. I love seeing familiar faces and names and crossovers. And smart aleck little boys who love so big. Jeremy made my heart melt, break and laugh. I loved reading more Ollie. And I really hope Ramone gets his own book soon.

AMAZING as always!

I have loved every single book that Emilia has put out. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE! And have read them all at least twice. But there’s something about these Love & War books that just hits different! Each one is better than the last, and this one definitely doesn’t disappoint! Thank you for writing such amazing books Emilia!

“Love Expert” is book 4 in the “Love & War” series, and you’ll definitely want to grab some popcorn 🍿to enjoy Maggie and Billy’s entertaining banter! They are so right for each other, and Billy realized it halfway through the book, but Maggie wasn’t having it. Billy’s son, Jeremy, is so adorable and stole the show for me.

Laugh out loud funny

Sometimes you need a little humor with your angst and this book nails it! 8 year old Jeremy steals the show, with cop buddy Ramone and the group text coming in a close second. Always enjoy an Emilia Finn book, can't wait to see what develops in Plainview next!

I loved the bantering between the characters and friends. This was a great addition to this world. Billy and Magnolia were cute and fun. At times I wanted to strangle them both, but they figured things out. I loved seeing how everyone was in cahoots behind their backs. However, the star of the show was Jeremy. He owns my heart.

I liked it.

I kind of don't want to admit it because it was a long read (not in length, but boy did it drag on and on and on), too much repeating of the same angsty BS, and characters that were still too traumatized to be in a healthy relationship. But I still like the characters, I liked the story, I liked the happy ending.

Yeah.

4.5. I love how Emilia writes her kid characters!! They add so much to the story. Jeremy is to blame for the tears in this one!! I was hoping for some hints at the end of the book for what is next??? Ramone???

I think I’m in love with Jeremy

That boy is seriously the sweetest child to ever exist, and I can easily see his daddy behaving the same way at that age. No wonder Maggie fell for him so long ago!

Really liked

I really enjoyed this book of the series. Its a good mix of second chances, loss, love, good banter, and the sweetest kid ever. And two very stubborn main characters. You can't go wrong with an Emilia Finn book.

Hilarious

Absolutely loved this story. The funny antics of Jeremy more than makes up for the occasional sad parts in the book. It is a story of the ideal "true love" that everyone hopes to find in their life. Laughed so hard, couldn't put the story down.
