Rate this book
Jesus still calls from the shore.

In Cast Thy Nets, Eric Stengel invites readers to rediscover the heart of Christian trusting Christ and living love as a daily mission.

Rooted in Scripture, Catholic teaching, and personal testimony, this book explores how faith is lived in ordinary moments—through family life, vocation, suffering, prayer, and service. Drawing inspiration from the risen Lord’s call to the disciples in John 21, Stengel reminds us that discipleship is not about perfection, but about responding again and again to Christ’s invitation.

Written for practicing Catholics, those returning to the Church, and anyone seeking spiritual renewal, Cast Thy Nets offers thoughtful reflections, real-life stories, and practical action steps.

Cast Thy Nets: The Power of Love & Discipleship by Eric Stengel was a great book! I'd definitely recommend it.

The story of the disciples casting their nets never stood out to me much before I read this, but I loved how the author dove deep into the miraculous catch, revealing new and different facets of the rich story I had never considered. It's amazing how the theme relates so well to so many different topics. I believe the Holy Spirit is working through this book and will continue to do so.

The inspiring stories from the life of the author and his family resonated with me, especially the story about his grandmother, Evelyn. When her barn caught fire, she sprinkled holy water on it, which may not have extinguished the flames, but showed her trust in God.

I loved the chapter on God drawing us in through the Bible, which taught about Lectio Divina and gave fruitful tips for engaging with Scripture daily, even as a family. It was exactly what I needed to hear. One of the best pieces of advice was this: "When a passage feels confusing, bring it to prayer and echo the words of Samuel: 'Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.'"

Each chapter was accompanied by beautiful, uplifting art, which was meaningful to me. There are helpful supplemental materials at the end of the book. With thought-provoking discussion questions and challenging action steps, Cast Thy Nets would be perfect to read as a daily/weekly devotional or as part of a book club. It would make an excellent gift for any occasion from Christmas to Confirmation.
