The Devil's Daughters

This is not a love story. This is a story of three sisters, born into a world that wasn’t built for girls unless they forced it to be.

In the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, 1882, the Riley sisters live by grit and gunpowder. Ennis, the eldest, carries the weight of being the mother none of them ever knew. Lake, quick-tongued and restless, can outdraw most men in town but longs for something steadier than dust and whiskey. And Thomasina—Tom to her sisters, Sina in town—wants nothing more than to be a lady, even if trouble follows her like a curse.

When Tom returns home bloodied and broken, carrying a confession that could destroy them all, their hard-won survival teeters on the edge of ruin. Now the sisters must decide how far they’re willing to go to protect their own, even if it means becoming exactly what the town thinks them to be.

But Oak Crest is not a town that forgets. Blood is demanded. The new sheriff watches with equal suspicion and interest. And a hired foreman proves he’s more than a match for cowgirls forged in fire. Secrets multiply, loyalties fray, and the Riley sisters find themselves caught between desire and devotion.

The Devil’s Daughters is a sultry, dark-humored Western gothic about blood ties, buried sins, and the women who learn the world won’t hand them power—so they must take it.

The way I inhaled every page of this book. Absolutely a million stars.

A western gothic that follows the Riley sisters in 1882 details family dynamics, family feuds, secrets, and a new sheriff in town who has his sights set on one of the Riley sisters.

I laughed at times. Tears slipped at others. The writing is phenomenally done with the best western metaphors.

I fell absolutely in love with these characters and their story. Tate has such a way with words and really brings an incredible story to life.

Wow is all I can say. When Calla Tate first described the book, my immediate thoughts were that of a movie I had watched when I was younger called Bad Girls. Turns out in the acknowledgments at the end she mentioned the movie along with other westerns she had watched when she was younger.

There are 3 Devil’s Daughters. The story is told from the POV of the middle daughter. Women that were raised by their Pa after mom died in childbirth of the youngest. Pa raised his daughters like they were sons and he never raised a hand to them. The women help run the ranch. All with different life attitudes, the responsible one, the trouble maker and the flirt. The youngest, Tom, is the flirt. She comes home one morning with a black eye & marks on her neck. In defending herself, she killed her attacker who just so happens to be from the wealthiest family in town. Does anyone see where this may lead? The wealthiest family is also corrupt. The older sister, Ennis and Lake, middle sister, go back to the scene and take the body home to bury him up on the ridge.

Enter the new sheriff in town, Theo. He’s looking into the corruption in town for the Federal Marshals. He’s an observer for the most part. When the wealthy family members start looking for their murdered one. They immediately go to blaming the Devil’s Daughters for having a hand in the disappearance. This feud is like the Hatfields & McCoys. He said. she said. You get the picture. It’s not a western without turmoil between two families is it? Well Theo takes a shining to Lake. He’s looking into the rumors of her family as well. Well let’s just say they’re some truth to the rumors. The women of the town LOVE Lake because she doles out justice for women wronged. Never displayed on page but mentioned. To say that Theo grows to really care about Lake and vice versa is putting it mildly. The tension between the two is obvious to everyone.

One night after a burlesque show that has come to town, more mayhem occurred that left one of the girls with a concussion. So the remaining family members, Pa included—he came up with the plan—start to spread rumors about the wealthy family, they disrupt the wealthy family business and Lake confronts Theo with half truths. Bada bing, bada boom the wealthy family decides to retaliate.

What do they do you may ask? Well you’re just going to have to read this amazing book to find out the rest. I wish also say this. This book has one of the BEST DAMN CHAPTERS I HAVE EVER READ. It was only 2 words. I laughed for about 5 minutes.

Received an ARC copy from the author for an honest review.

I just finished The Devil’s Daughters and I was honestly kind of surprised by how much I enjoyed it. This is not my usual genre at all, but it kept me interested the whole time and I was never bored.

It takes place in the late 1800s, and the author calls it a gothic Western. It definitely leans toward a dark Western with strong sister dynamics, tension with a rival family, and definitely some spice.

The story follows three sisters, Ennis, Lake, and Tom, who grew up on a ranch with their father after losing their mother during childbirth with the youngest. Their dad is very emotionally distant and comes across as cold for a lot of the story, so the sisters were basically raised to be tough and take care of themselves. You can tell in his own way that he does love them, even if he rarely shows it.

Ennis is the oldest and kind of the steady one who keeps things running on the ranch. Lake is the middle daughter and one of the dual POVs. She is blunt, sharp, and doesn’t take anything from anyone. Tom is the youngest and even though she is rough around the edges like her sisters, she kind of wants to be seen as more of a proper lady and fit into that world, even though that is not really who she is.

There is also a lot of judgment from the town when it comes to the Riley sisters and how they carry themselves. They are known for not letting men walk all over them, and they definitely stand their ground. Some people respect them for it, especially some of the women in town, but others do not quite know what to make of them.

I really liked Lake as a POV character. She was really fun to read, blunt, and easy to follow. Each of the sisters also felt very different from one another, but you could still tell they were a strong family unit. I also liked having the sheriff as the second POV because it added another layer to the story. I also liked the dynamic between him and Lake, and it added a lot to the story.

Overall, this was way more engaging than I expected. I do not usually read Westerns, but this kept my attention the entire time and I actually enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.

If this author can keep me this interested in a genre I do not normally pick up, I would definitely read more from her.

This book felt like stepping into a dusty, dangerous corner of the Old West where survival isn't enough. You have to be willing to fight for what you want and live with the consequences.

What hooked me from the start was the sisters. Lake, Ennis, and Tom are the heart of this story, and their bond is what kept me turning the pages. They were raised in a world that doesn't make room for women like them, and watching them navigate that reality was easily my favorite part of the book.

This wasn't just a romance for me. It was a story about power, loyalty, family, and what happens when women refuse to accept the roles they've been given.

The western setting felt gritty and immersive, while the darker themes, morally grey characters, and constant tension kept me invested. There was always this feeling that something was about to go wrong, and I mean that in the best way.

I also have to mention how unique this felt. Between the gothic western atmosphere, the outlaw vibes, and the female-led power dynamics, it brought something different to a genre that can sometimes feel familiar.

As for Lake and Theo? The tension was definitely there. Their relationship added another layer of conflict and intrigue to an already complicated story, and I found myself rooting for them from the beginning.

If you enjoy dark western romances, strong heroines, morally grey characters, family loyalty, and a romance woven into a larger story, I'd definitely recommend picking this one up.

If you’re on the fence, try it. I wasn’t sure I was interested in the premise, but it’s so unique and so intentionally written that I ended up really enjoying it. It might not be for everyone, but I was pleasantly surprised and you might be too.

Lake and her sisters live in an old west town, where they’re kind of pariahs, and proudly so. Lake acts as the town vigilante for abused women, giving men lessons in control they won’t soon forget. A new sheriff comes to town right after the sisters accidentally kill one of their rivals for getting too handsy, and even though he came to root out the corruption of the rival family, he’s not totally convinced he shouldn’t be coming after the sisters as well.

What was really impressive to me was the writing style and the effort that must have gone into making the way the characters think and speak feel true to the time & setting. The downside to this is sometimes I didn’t understand what their metaphors or sayings meant, but the tone came through well enough for me to get the gist. I also love how morally gray the sisters are, to the point where sometimes I wasn’t sure if I was actually rooting for them or wanted them to get caught. They are definitely not your usual heroines, and I like how unpredictable that makes them.

I received this as an eARC and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

The Devil's Daughters had me from the first page. This book is full of suspense, incredibly bold and descriptive imagery through storytelling, and some of the fiercest, most enjoyable FMCs ever.

I immediately loved the Riley sisters. Each of them was so different from the others, but they all possessed an incredible level of grit and determination that proved their daddy didn't raise doormats. These sisters proved blood is thicker than water and they showed up for each other over and over again. This book includes the perfect bit of vigilante justice to remind the men who seek to take what isn't theirs that their actions come with a price.

While the story encompasses all three sisters, the majority focus is on Lake and the new Sheriff in town, Theo. While Theo is working to uncover secrets, Lake is showing him that sometimes secrets deserve to stay out of the hands of the law. Her sharp wit and tongue prove to keep Theo on his toes throughout the story and I absolutely loved their banter and how perfectly they come together.

This story truly is such an enjoyable read and I loved every bit of it!

*I received this eARC for free in exchange for my honest review.*

Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC of this book! It was such a departure from what I normally read, it had me hooked from the beginning. The story takes place in the 1880s and is set in an old time Western town, complete with rival farms, a saloon, and a sheriff. There is some spice and romance, but it is not the focal point of the story. The story focuses on the relationship between the Riley sisters and how they come together to protect one of their own.

There is some POV switches between Lake, our main narrator, and the new Sheriff in town, Theo. Having the dual POVs gives the readers more insight into their relationship and how close the sheriff is to figuring out more about the Riley family. I enjoyed the dynamic between the sisters, how Ennis is the strong independent one while Tom is the more free-spirited one. The whole Riley vs Bevington feud was an interesting conflict and the Riley sisters handled their own against the intense corruption of their town.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I don't normally read westerns, but I couldn't put this one down! I look forward to reading more from this author!

The Devil’s Daughters is a unique dark western romance. I seriously love a morally gray FMC. When I see that listed as trope immediate read!! I love reading about bad ass women

The setting in this book is a gothic western style set in the 1880s, it honestly gave me a western movie vibe too. The way Calla Tate described the characters and the way she uses her words are just incredible. This is my second book I’ve read from her and I highly recommend her books. It has great tropes, different elements from your typical book and it will pull you in immediately. It will have you loving every moment you spent reading about the Riley sisters.

Lake and her 2 sisters are feisty and strong. They are so close and will do anything for one another. They have one good unbreakable bond. Literally don’t mess with these girls they will break you apart. Lake is my girl 🙌

Lake and Sheriff Theo together will have you clutching your pearls because once Theo lays eyes on Lake.. the rest is history. And the spice!!! Ooh yes… so delicious with the use of restraints 😏🌶️ I would love to see some NSFW illustrations

Huge thanks to Calla Tate for the ARC! Honestly, this book completely stole my heart. I’m usually picky with Western Gothics, but The Devil’s Daughters grabbed me from the very first page and just refused to let go. It’s gritty, it’s emotional, and it’s got just the right amount of dark humor to keep you hooked.

Can we talk about the Riley sisters? Ennis, Lake, and Tom are absolute icons. I loved that they felt so distinct—they’re strong, but they aren't invincible, and they’re stubborn in the best way possible. Watching them take on a world that kept trying to underestimate them? It was so satisfying. Their bond is the real heart of this whole story; you can tell how much they’d do for each other, and it hits you right in the chest.

The setting was such a vibe, too. Calla Tate did an amazing job with that dusty frontier atmosphere—you can practically feel the heat, the secrets, and the constant sense of danger lurking around every corner. It felt so cinematic, like I was watching the whole thing play out in my head.

And the romance? I was invested. It had that perfect slow-burn tension, but I love that it never felt like it was overshadowing the sisters' own story. They stayed true to themselves the whole time, which is so refreshing.

I honestly didn't want this story to end. It’s that rare kind of book that balances family drama, mystery, and high-stakes danger so well you’ll find yourself staying up way too late just to finish "one more chapter." If you want an unforgettable story that’ll stick with you long after you close the book, do yourself a favor and pick this up immediately.

Rating: 5 Stars. A total standout read.

I have found that I like reading westerns, specifically western romances. But this book intrigued me even without it being a romance. I had read another book by Calla and enjoyed her writing. I figured I’d give this one a try, and expand my horizons.

I loved it!

The writing style fit the time period and painted vivid pictures for me. I was sucked back to 1882. It has more than just the classic western vibe to it. There’s a more sinister element that felt a bit gothic, which I also really enjoyed. I’m a sucker for dark humor and there some of those moments sprinkled in. When I found myself chuckling, I questioned if I should really be laughing but what else can you do in some of those moments. It was perfect.

Give me strong, morally grey women that don’t take ship from men, handle what needs to be done, and are all bad-aces. I really love that they did all this in a time when women didn’t receive much respect. I wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of the Riley sisters.

Granted this is a western and this word is commonly used but it really fits this book - grit. I can’t think of a better single word to sum it up. This book has grit and is a fantastic read.

This isn’t your cute country cowboy romance. This is a dark western romance. Where the FMC’s are tough as nails and the MMC’s could set a field on fire.

The Devil’s Daughters is a unique read that takes place in 1882. It’s gothic, gory, and a little rough around the edges. There is corruption rotting the town of Oak Crest. And the power dynamics as well as the line between villain and victim get blurred at times.

I loved all the dark themes and the attention to detail within Calla Tate’s book. She really knows how to set a mood within a scene.

When things were dark it still had so much humor and made you think of the Addams Family. This is a family that is a little left of center and they do not apologize for it and lean harder away because of it. They also have a fierce sisterhood that cannot be shaken.

The villains in this story you will hate with a passion. And the spice will leave you just as parched as the sierra foothills before a rain. If you are a lover of dark gothic reads and enjoy spice in your book this will be the read for you.

🐎🥵🪓

This was my first spicy western book and I’m not mad about it at all! It had the saloon, the swinging doors, the sheriff with his two man cell jail, the outlaws (good and bad ones) and horses as transportation! Thank you Calla for allowing me to read this ARC!

It was full of dirt, blood, sweat, war, secrecy, death, love stories, and a whole lotta dirty thoughts that those love stories were built off of.

Sometimes the pressure of being a woman in general is too much but for The Riley sisters it’s at higher stakes. They have a name to carry, a legacy to run and they’re competing with men who use money for power and get away with it.

A new sheriff is in town though and he quickly learns where his loyalties lie. Literally. But his morals are different than Lake’s and he needs to do things his way in order to earn her trust and in the end, her love. They earn each other’s trust by making those dirty thoughts come true (insert jail cell scene🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️) and following through on their word.

Way to go Calla! I give this 5 ⭐️’s!

This book had me hooked from the moment I saw morally gray FMC and it delivered exactly what I wanted and more.
A dark western romance with a gothic edge set in the 1880s, it feels like stepping into a hauntingly beautiful western film where everything is a little more dangerous, a little more intense. Calla Tate’s writing is effortless and vivid ,the kind that doesn’t just tell a story, it pulls you into it. At this point, I’d pick up anything she writes without hesitation.
What makes this stand out is how it takes familiar tropes and twists them into something fresh. It’s not your typical romance it’s darker, bolder, and impossible to put down. The Riley sisters completely own this book.
Lake and her sisters are fierce in every sense of the word strong, loyal, and unbreakable. Their bond is everything, and the way they stand for each other? Absolutely unmatched. Cross them, and you won’t walk away the same. And Lake… she is the moment. Fearless, sharp, and impossible not to love.
Then there’s Sheriff Theo.
The second he lays eyes on Lake, you can feel the shift, the tension, the pull, the inevitability of it all. Their dynamic is intense, consuming, and it keeps you on edge the entire time. Every interaction feels charged, like something is always about to snap.
And the chemistry? Absolutely unmatched. It adds that extra layer of heat and tension that makes this baby even more addictive.

Made me laugh, cry, gag, and ho—well, it got intense.

I’m usually not a huge fan of western gothics, but consider me a convert because I LOVED this. This is Calla Tate’s second book and I’m sold — must read all her books. The banter between the sisters and their men had me laughing out loud, there was a moment that made me happy cry, two scenes that gave me the ick, and the steamy scenes fogged up my glasses. And I especially love that this author ain’t afraid to kill a feller. Tee‑hee.

It’s a shame that in every era women have to fight to be respected, and this story follows three sisters doing exactly that — protecting one another, surviving the land and the evil in it, and finding the men willing to stand at their side.

I swear this book was so good. I can’t wait to read it again.
If you like strong female characters with gumption and sass, this is the story for you.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | The Devil’s Daughters by Calla Tate @callatatebooks

This book feels like stepping straight into a dusty, gun-slinging old western film, gritty, raw, and completely immersive.

At its heart are three sisters, raised by a hardened man who only ever wanted sons to carry on his forge. Instead, he got daughters who are just as tough, stubborn, and unyielding as any man he could’ve hoped for. The town may call them the devil’s daughters, but they don’t bend, they don’t break, and they certainly don’t take any shit.

What I loved most is how unapologetically fierce these women are. They’re not “good” in the traditional sense. They deal damage when it’s deserved, and they own it.

This isn’t your typical romance. It’s a slow-burn wrapped in tension, grit, and heat. The kind of story that simmers under your skin and keeps you hooked with its intensity rather than rushing to soft moments.

Dark, atmospheric, and fiercely addictive. If you want something that feels different from the usual romance, this one delivers. #arcreview

The story drops us into an 1880s town full of dirty secrets, following three sisters who are pushed to the brink by dangerous men. But instead of playing the victim, they actively start dropping bodies to protect their own. I am completely tired of historical romances where the women just sit around waiting to be saved. These sisters will literally kill for each other and I loved every single second of it.

Lake being an absolute menace is fantastic. The sibling bond is legitimately terrifying when someone threatens their family, but the romance completely held its own. Theo is exactly what a male main character should be. He manages to be highly masculine without crossing into toxic territory, and I absolutely love that he fully embraces the fact that the woman he falls for is a terrifying badass. He never tries to soften her edge, he just lets her do her thing.

It is dark, dirty, and the women hold all the cards. I highly recommend this if you want a gritty romance featuring deeply competent protagonists who actually handle their own shit.

Not my usual genre at all, but I’ve read and enjoyed Calla Tate before so I wanted to give this one a shot.

Gothic western with strong female leads and dark humor?? Yeah, apparently that’s exactly my thing because I loved this way more than I expected to.

Calla really knows how to create a vibe with her writing, making this such a quick and fun read even while covering some pretty heavy stuff.

This is mainly a single POV with a few chapters here and there from the Sheriff’s POV.

Definitely not a romance, but still very much a love story, especially when it comes to family and sisterhood, with a little heat thrown in because why not?

Overall this was atmospheric, gritty, darkly funny, and a little unhinged in the best way.

Definitely recommend if you want strong female characters who are messy, morally gray, funny, and absolutely thriving in these western vibes.

Thank you to the author for this advanced reading opportunity.

This book just wrapped you into its imagery. The three Devil’s Daughters all dragged me into their stories and left me rooting for them the entire way. Their life had been hard, and it had made them that much stronger for it. I loved the way the book painted them as having found their place in the world, only to make it so they all found what they wanted, what they didn't even know they needed. The interactions between Lake and Theo were golden, each one like a moth to the flame that couldn't be resisted. The way Ennis fought her pull to Hank, not wanting to relinquish the control she was so used to carrying. Then there was Tom, she was looking for the attention she craved in all the wrong places. Despite Eli being such a minor character, the golden retriever energy was a nice compliment to her dominance.

I AM SO FUCKING OBSESSED AND IN LOVE.

First off, the dedication. Never knew someone else to have a Big Grandma, yet alone one that loved grocery store romance. So sold from that.
Second, THE DESCRIPTION OF LITERAL EVERYTHING. Ya girl was straight up living as a Devils Daughter while reading. Everything was described so well!
Third, obviously the girls were amazing but the MEN, bc that’s what those were M E N. Theo, and Hank, and a surprise, and PA. I love that grumpy man.
Third, justice. It was perfection. Needs no changes.

10000000000/10 recommend reading and I know that I’m lucky enough to be able to see Calla Tate at local events but you should definitely order a shelf copy if you can because I promise you’re gonna want it!!

I could not put this book down. What surprised me the most is so out of my comfort zone, but now I am searching for more. It took the right storyteller and the right book to introduce me properly.

A western gothic, I did not know about this trope before! We meet the three Riley sisters in about the year 1882. We are in the town of Oak Crest. The sisters are strong characters with a reputation, and when one of their own is hurt, they live up to it.

We have secrets, feuds, revenge, and plenty of suspense. The story is well written; I found myself glued to the pages. I want to be on the good side of these sisters, as they are some of the most badass women I have read in a while.

Arc review. I was not paid to write this review, I am doing it because I want to.

This was a really twisted Western and let me tell you, I was here for it. It was spicy, sassy and had a lot of twists that I did not see coming.

3 daughters, their father, a decades long feud, and a new sheriff who is trying to figure everything out. A town that calls the father a devil and the daughters "devil's daughters" because of tales told through the years.

This book has bad ass women
Mystery
Thrills
Plot twists galore

If you like westerns you will definitely like this book.

I swear Calla Tate is one of my favorite new authors. This book was so different from what I expected. I was locked in from the very beginning. The Riley sisters are totally bad @$$. It was so refreshing to see such strong, powerful, dominant, take no sh*t FMC's. Each one is different in their own right. I love the relationships between the sisters, the banter. To them family means everything. They gave the true meaning between ride or ☠️. There is some spice and it is definitely spicy! I loved Lake and Theo. The dynamic and chemistry between them was fire hot from the very beginning. I really hope this might turn into a series so we can get to know the other sisters a little better.

While I really liked this story line, the book really threw me off with the names. The daughters all have male names and it really messed up the story itself for me personally. I rated this book 5 stars because the book is actually good however it’s not a book I would read again due to personal preferences. If you like the old time western type of books (think Wyatt Earp era) then you’ll love this. It just wasn’t for me personally. I typically read dark romance and while this book does have dark themes it’s not the right era/genre for me.

I have never felt sooooo empowered. Not only is my last name Riley, but these three sisters shared that, and I could only DREAM of being so headstrong, so intense and unafraid. In the real sense, these women weren't afraid to be exactly who they are, and to protect each other, and I hope and wish that many more women can read this and feel the deep sense of triumph in it. I thought the story was perfectly done, and the spice was immaculately placed, and also so tasteful and raw. This was an amazing read!!!

I loveddddd this book! I often get bored reading books with a setting in this time period, but this was great. I liked the character development throughout the book and the girls being strong characters, but also strong women during a time that a lot weren’t. Loved their masculine names as well. I found them to be funny and entertaining. I’d love to read a sequel! The other books I read by this author were also very good, but so different. I was excited to read this book after reading her others & it did not disappoint.

What more can you ask for when the description says dark gothic western romance? Um, yes please! This was so good. I loved the sisters. They were as different as night and day, but when it didn’t matter when it came to them sticking up for one another. These guns were badasses. All of them fierce. Could put a man to shame in that day. I was so caught up in this story, I would’ve happily let it go on for a very long period of time. It was dark and funny. Held a nice dash of spice, and kept me turning the pages. I absolutely loved the way this drew me in and kept me wanting more.

I am obsessed with this book. One would think that as daughters to a widower in the 1800’s, there is definitely a take on this around cowgirls that you wouldn’t have thought to see back then. One is prim, one is surly and the other is open about her wants. This book was very hard to put down. But I also cannot find any fault with it because it was just that good. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I had the chance to read The Devil’s Daughters early and I’m still thinking about it!! This book is gritty, emotional, dangerous, and completely addictive. The sisterhood, the tension, the morally gray characters, and the dark western atmosphere pulled me in immediately and never let go. If you love survival stories, fierce women, slow-burning tension, and books that keep you saying “one more chapter,” this is absolutely one to watch for!!
