Aaron Lebold is an author of psychological horror, sometimes dabbling in extreme elements. His love of the genre began at an early age with all the best slasher films. Writing has always been something of interest but he didn’t make any serious attempts at it until 2017. Since that time he has completed several novels and novellas. His short stories can be found in various anthologies by various publishers. Some of his short stories have been narrated for the Cryo-Pod Podcast. His novel “Born Sick” took second place at the Godless 666 awards for best novel of 2022.

I knew when I started it that this'd be a religious horror book, I was prepared for gore and extreme, but I had no idea how DARK the story would actually get! Don't misunderstand me, it is gory (occasionally) and extreme (not too often), but it's the overall situation in which Jack, the main character, just released from prison, finds himself in when taken under the Catholic Church's wing. Kudos to Lebold for not making the real darkness apparent too early: I only realized what was going on in the background exactly the moment Jack himself does; I felt as nauseous and uncomfortable, nay, outraged, precisely as he did! I felt sick.

Which I personally count as an achievement, since the book initially appears to be just a typical after prison story, a former convict's story of second chances: Jack adjusting to life outside once he's turned legit with the support of religion. But Jack has a nasty past as an enforcer of sorts, he's a simple man who knows how the world works, and can be as brutal as the situaiton demands. He soon realizes that the Church supporting him isn't offering just guidance. And when Nun Amy crosses his path, he also realizes that Amy isn't there to provide only solace. And then we reach the last third of the book, and WHAM... the reveal.

This is a beautiful extreme noir book, a blend of religious horror and crime thriller, full of suspense and emotional upheavals, some graphic violence, and lots of disturbing content. A solid story I heartily recommend to all horror readers who enjoy clever writing, hard-boiled cruelty, and horrific twists!

Blasphemy by Aaron Lebold is an extreme crime thriller with overtones of intense religious and psychological horror. The simple yet intriguing synopsis blurb gives the basic premise of the story but does not begin to do it justice. Because as readers know, Lebold unapologetically delves into the darkest parts of society and raw human emotion.

This is an intense and evocative character-driven story. It’s a dark story, rich with emotion and thought and perspective, but it’s also teeming with wrenching horrors and brutal violence, and it’s all woven into a suspenseful page-turner that will leave you emotionally and mentally spent.

Blasphemy is a must-read for fans of splatterpunk and extreme horror, but the trigger warnings are to be taken seriously. Aaron Lebold pulls no punches in presenting the depraved and bloody horrors within. This impactful tale will stay with you long after the last page is turned.

"I've been content with feeling nothing for the last eight years, but in the last week, I've felt some things that I didn't even know I missed."

Meet Jack Blackstone …. He’s about to be released from Sweich prison and he not only has a new outlook on life. He’s about to have a new beginning at the Catholic Church. Of course with all things good there comes a penance. As the game of cat and mouse begins Jack is torn between doing what’s right or ignoring all the BLASPHEMY for love.
