Charley, a cyborg vampire who does the Vatican's dirty work, is the thrall of the local vampire playboy Johnny Rayflo. As the two of them fight crime--and each other--hilarity, violence and sacrilege ensue! But can Charley resist his own desperate cravings for blood? Find out as the devilish duo go up against a childlike vampire princess, a mysterious branch of the Unitarian Church...and each other.
I read this because I mentioned a comment my son made to me in a review and one of my gr friends decided to help. My son walked by me and said, "Whatcha reading mama? Gay vampire cyborg in space book?" I was happy that he gets me, but also challenged to find such a book.
Okay, I may be a tad aggressive in my reaction, but still - accepted, I said!!
This is a gay vampire cyborg manga. Close enough. It was okay, but it left me feeling like I often do with manga - wishing that it was a full book. The story was hard to follow, and there wasn't enough information. Like, soooooo many questions..... and they weren't answered. Still, fun.
The main character is a cybernetic vampire priest.
Well, priest-in-training. Training that involves slaying vampires rather than, you know, the seminary. Or caring about stuff like chastity. Charley/Chris/Cherry is a cybernetic vampire-slaying vampire wannabe-priest who is gay with his vampire master who is maybe a drug dealer or something* and has sexy attack maids but also likes cute things like pandas and dorky little kids with bowl cuts (not in a pedo- way).
Oh, Charley also has a doberman.
And can work a Princess Bride reference into casual conversation.
They go to China together (which is where the pandas come in) and fight a rip-off of Anne Rice's little girl vampire. They go to a black-tie party at a Unitarian church. They explore underground tunnels and fight monsters and get caught inappropriately making out in semi-public settings.
The author says this was written on a whim.
If you're not bothered by smut or things that make no sense this is actually quite good. It has entertaining action and is funny actually has one of the healthier relationships I've seen in manga.
I'm bummed my library doesn't have the rest of this series as we haven't even found out what the title means yet.
*At the beginning Rayflo is obviously rich and is making a deal for a "shipment" from somebody named Barry(!) but this gets dropped and he later seems to be living with Charley.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Charles the blond one (alias, Cherry! OMG Johnny call him Cherry! HOW CUTE IS THAT????) and Johnny Rayflo are two vampires, and OMG I'm in love with both and I READ JUST THIS FIRST VOLUME!
This Shojo already captivate me with its wonderful art, but also the angst between Charley and Johnny! It's (for now) very tamed as art, but I'm hoping there will be more explicit scenes between Cherry and his Master!
Amazing and can't wait to read more!
Some parts is just so amazing I could keep looking at it for hours, and would never get tired
The art is superb!
Best phrase:
Oh yeah! I'm your fuck'n master!
(Johnny to Cherry, and hell yeah... the double meaning is very obvious)
Save me toxic yaoi catholic guilt vampires, save me.
I cyborgiem. Charley odmawia picia krwi z kogokolwiek innego niż Rayflo i nienawidzi bycia wampirem, bo oddala go to od boga. Wchodzi katolickie poczucie winy.
This review is for Volume 1-7. Hot Gay Vampire seducing Virgin Vampire Hunter(who is also a vampire)! Not a fan of twilight but it amuses me when haters make a big deal of Edwardo being a 100 yr old vampire when Cherry/Charlie/Chris has already beaten the record as a 145 yrs old virgin vampire. pfft
I got hooked in this manga from the moment I saw the sexy without sex blood drinking scenes and hit a lot of my kinks.
The art is gorgeous. The characters and the action/fight scenes are bamf level of awesome. Though admittedly, it get confusing at first with a lot of characters popping up and then disappearing and then popping up again and the episodic side stories, but the manga-ka pulled off the ending rounding all those little clues and characters and revealing and explaining majority of them and how they tied up together. I say majority because the ending feels like the manga-ka could pull of another sequel for this manga. I wish!
The story revolves around the relationship between the cyborg vampire hunter(who is also a vampire) Chris/Charlie/Cherry and his master/vampire sire Johnny Rayflo and the mysterious drug called Vassalord.
Chris/Charlie is also a devout catholic who wanted to be a priest thus the more than a century celibacy. He is a ridiculous mash up of tropes that you might wonder what the manga-ka was thinking about creating him, but the reason why he became that way was revealed bit by bit throughout the story. He is also dependent on his master/vampire sire for blood feedings because he refused to drink human blood since he believes that it would make him diverge even farther from God. He's also part cyborg because he replaced the parts of his body affected by holy symbols with robotic ones. For example, a vampire cannot quote from the Bible out loud, so Charley switched his vocal cords with mechanical ones. Anyway, because Rayflo is Chris/Charlie's only source of food, he mostly drags his master around his vampire hunting missions.
Johnny Rayflo is a playboy gay vampire who is hinted to be the very first vampire and progenitor of other vampires and liked to tease Chris/Charlie and calls him Cherry for being a virgin. He has a tragic past involving with a demon who continues to hunt and torture him. This is where I warn you for the non-con/rape that Rayflo endured from that demon/incubus who is obsessed with him.
Bit by bit, they uncover a sinister and mysterious drug called Vassalord that can mutate humans into becoming vampires. Follow them as they try to find out who the creator of the drug Vassalord is and his connection with Rayflo.
So come on, let yourself be seduced by hot gay vampires and read this!
I really want an anime series of this manga considering how awesome the animation of its OVA.
Dark, funny, high action and plot. This is not a fluffy romance, but more Seinen. Two vampire hunters who work for the Vatican, that are vampires themselves. Twisted, yet campy funny with some sexy scenes between these two. Love this series.
2) English Review This manga is a typical example of a good idea that was ruined by poor implementation. The concept of a vampire-hunting vampire who feeds on his master and is also a cyborg, is really interesting enough in and on itself, but the problems came quickly. The guy is, by pure coincident, immune to sunlight (how lucky for the author) and the pages had so much detail (they are full of it) that it was difficult to follow the story and because of the nature of manga, that is a bad sign. Later, there was no change: The pages were so crowded that it was difficult to make out details and be able to follow what was at stake. The writing style doesn't help either, nor the drawing style which often does not show what is needed . The whole ordeal was so bad that at 37% of the book I had no idea what was going on. There was a fight scene, the vampire-cyborg let himself grow wings, apparently Rayflo is the Original Vampire (why not ...), then came a church and even more characters and then there was a flashback with Rayflo and the young Chris, I think at least, that just came out of nowhere. Can anyone follow all the stuff that is smashed together here? When the pages were not so full, the plot was easier to follow but sadly one plot point after the other was thrown at your face. Unfortunately, the quantity is not the only problem here. You see, Rayflo is supposed to be 42 years old in appearance... would it have killed the author to actually portray him as such? It apparently was no problem to have him be whatever the plot calls for; at least it seems so with his cryptic remarks and emotional outbursts. Unfortunately, the plot was still so predictable that you saw the twist coming . And a lot of sense did all this make not even towards the end and it showed that the creators were simply too lazy. Rayflo had e.g. a "twin" (first it was said he had a sex change) and one should not ask about it because it would be taboo, aka they were too lazy to explain it. I had no interest in reading the second volume, the story throws a one element after another at you, moves way too fast and Rayflo is whatever the story needs.
Review of the series entire. It feels insincere to pick up a series about a cyborg-vampire and his troubled relationship with his "master," maker, and only food source and then turn around and call it very anime, but--this is! The style is excessive, the action is uninteresting and sometimes illegible, the humor doesn't always land, the intimacy fake-outs are tropey, and there's a lot of intentional doubling which is nonetheless ridiculous--the mess of Rayflo/Rayfell/Chris called Charley called Cherry/Cheryl/Berry is fun to say but points to flaws in the art, namely that the mangaka struggles with female bodies and Rayflo & Rayfell are weaker for it.
But it grew on me, in part because that excess is the point of a vampire manga, but also because there's surprising consistency in the central relationship--a consistency done disservice by the fake-outs and maybe even by the series's place as "mainstream"/nonexplicit/not BL. The feedings and sexual fake-outs as are framed as subtext, substitutions, or even baiting for a "real" relationship, but then the plot plays it all straight within the relationship's development: this is the intimacy that exists in this point in an evolving and complicated romantic relationship. It's fascinating in retrospect and makes for fun feeding scenes which go hog-wild with the sexual subtext but also feel like a convincing nonhuman intimacy. Come for the OTT gay vampire shenanigans; breeze through a plot that does interesting things with character backstories but uninteresting things with the central action; stay because the interpersonal mess of gay vampire shenanigans is pretty good actually, within the bounds of trashy manga.
Another vampire manga for my critical paper and I’m not sure what it is, some say shojo, other’s shonen-nei (that would be my guess). I got sucked right into this one. I have to admit, the first volume is rather muddied. The story settles down once you get past that (which is a shame since well many people will see that confusing first volume and give up)
The two main characters are Charley (otherwise known as Chris and Cherry), who is a vampire/cyborg combo who works as a vampire hunter for the Vatican. His maker is the hedonist, Johnny. Charley and Johnny do seem to occasionally live together and Johnny also seems to be the only blood meal Charley allows himself to take. Together they fight a variety of crime and secret organizations. There is a twin to Johnny, Eve (and since his originally name is ‘addie’ I can’t help wondering if they’re supposed to be Adam and Eve). She tries to trick and bribe Charley into having sex with her. Johnny often does the same though there seems to be real affection between the two men, unconsummated much to Johnny’s chagrin (there might be some truth to the nickname Cherry for Charley).
I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. The art is gorgeous.

I just finished reading Vassalord, beginning to end, and wow.
The art is gorgeous, the characters are gorgeous. And the plot? Mind blowing when it all starts coming together and you sit there going "How did I not notice this?!" I quickly found myself totally getting into it and feeling protective of certain characters and getting frustrated when bad things would happen to them and nobody was there to help them. My favorite stories are these, ones that I CARE what happens to characters and want everything to be rainbows and unicorns even though I know that's the last thing that's going to happen (at least until the end). I found myself shouting and cheering and not trying to wake up the house at the same time because of reading it into odd hours of the night. I like stories that drag me along for the ride in their world and Vassalord does that.
I give it, without a second thought, 5 stars. 13 out of 10, would highly recommend.
So last Saturday I thought I'm gonna do it old style - waltz into the library and pick up books straight off the shelves based on their back blurb.
Vassalord Vol 1 happened to be one of those books.
Cyborg vampire? OH MY GOD, YES PLEASE.
Yea, nah.
I guess it could be a case of 'it's not the book, it's me'. I only read manga after I watched the anime version of that manga in the past, so going into this, not knowing anything about the characters and the plot - I felt disorientated and lost.
Charley and Johnny have some wonderful interaction, lots of innuendo and UST but unfortunately I can only give this three stars because of a confused and confusing plot. Characters enter and exit with no explanation and since the author has crafted a fantasy world, there's lots of terminology and organizational structure to figure out. Those things aren't presented badly but the confusing plot makes it doubly hard to figure them out. I am going to keep reading this for the slash potential but I'm honestly surprised that this is the same author who produced Peacemaker.
This is the second manga series that I have bought where a vampire (a cyborg one this time though) is doing the work of the Vatican. Trinity Blood being the first.
I liked the characters and the shounen-ai was fun, but I did find Rayflo transforming into a woman at will a bit OTT. Plus I am still unclear as to why there were suddenly two of him at the end!
Yeah, so not sure if I'm going to continue with this or not...

Vampires + blasphemy + raunchy sex jokes + cyborg implants & lots of explosions = most entertaining thing I've read in AGES. So goddamn funny and downright WRONG it should come with a warning label.
Boy was this weird. I agree with some of the other reviewers that it was very confusing at times.
So apparently, “Cherry,” aka Charles aka Chris was an orphan that Johnny Rayflo, an old pureblood vampire, raised when he found him in a war zone in his feeding ground and took him to the safety of the church. Eventually, Cherry was mortally wounded and begged Rayflo to save him, so Johnny turned Charles into a vampire. Now, a hundred fifty or so years later, the two have a strange relationship. It’s clear they love each other, and Charles will only feed from Rayflo so he doesn’t have to hurt anyone. It seems at first like a romantic relationship, but it’s almost more like a father/son dynamic, especially since Cherry still has his (he’s a virgin). I don’t know how anyone goes almost 200 years without sex but that’s apparently the case.
Charles at this point is both a vampire and a cyborg, though why he is the latter isn’t entirely clear at this point. Maybe to make him a better vampire hunter? He works for the Vatican hunting bad vampires with Rayflo’s help, especially since he can’t go much longer than a week or two without feeding.
That’s about it, other than the fact that Rayflo is fond of showing off his six pack, lol. That said, the character design for him is on point. He’s damn sexy.

I DECIDED TO PICK THIS UP AFTER NEGLECTING IT FOR 3 YEARS....im not dissapointed and it rekindled my love for vampire genre. (haha wattpad) UNFORTUNATLY ITS A LITTLE HARD TO COME ACROSS COPIES OF THIS MANGA IN 2020 AS ITS PRINT WAS STOPPED. its on amazon but the sellers arent very reliable T_T they lost my order
this is 100% nsfr (not suitable for ramadan) but someone on twitter mentioned it and i had sudden nostalgic flashbacks to my misspent youth :') might poke around some of the comic shops next time i'm in the twin cities and see if i can find out whether this really is as ridiculous as i remember
Like so many action mangas from the 2000s, the way this is written makes no sense whatsoever. Following the plot is like trying to follow a fruit fly around a dark room. The parts I could understand were entertaining, aside from some very dated humor, but boy it was kind of exhausting to read.
