I did not like this book. It is very short and not really a graphic novel but will introduce early readers to the basic concept. This is another book like too many I've read recently that let's bullies get away with bad behavior and makes the victim have to be friends with the bully. There's no excuse for the bully to act the way he does, but when he gets injured the victim is told he should go see him. WHY? Seriously, why? It doesn't matter if he's hurt or sick or dying, you don't get to treat people that way and then expect everyone to be friends in the end.

Not realistic

The book takes a way too rosy view of bullies and bullying. I wish it was this easy to stop it.

The first couple of pages show how to read a graphic novel showing the direct panels are read and then showing the direction text and balloons should by read. Gavin does not like the bus. Not the way it looks or the way it smells but most of all he does not like Max. He is terrified everyday going on the bus because Max always comes and sits in his seat, eats his snack, laughs at him and trips him. But one day Max is not there, nor the next. At first Max can't believe the difference but then he starts to worry what's happened to Max? Does Gavin actually miss Max? A fun story and an interesting look at one possibility for a bully's actions. Loving Simard's illustrations for these books. A great read considering the low reading level, RL 1.4. This is certainly of a much higher interest level, probably up to about 9 years old. The story is not simple or babyish in anyway. A great book for first time graphic readers and reluctant readers.

I'm not saying this is a horrible book, but it's not exactly a graphic novel either...

If it wasn't marketed as that, I might be willing to purchase it for my library. But most of the text is outside of the graphics which, in my opinion, just makes this a picture book that also has a few speech bubbles.

I like how it teaches the kids HOW to read a graphic novel, though. Just a little confused on this layout.

Gavin does not like to ride the bus because Max, who also rides the bus, bullies him. One day Max did not ride the bus and Gavin is really happy about it. He even enjoys the ride. Later he knew that Max had an accident and that he is at home. Gavin decides to visit Max and realizes he is not that bad after all. Gr. K-2

I was hoping for a book that had a message about standing up for yourself or at least standing up for your friends. Instead, it was a book that more or less said people are mean sometimes because they want your attention/want to be your friend and you should just forgive them and be their friend even if they never apologize.
