I live on a island in the Puget Sound with my husband and my dogs. I am a retired teacher, presently doing in -home care for disabled people while volunteering at a dog rescue

My degree is in art, and I am a painter, graphic artist, and ceramic sculptor. The writing started about five years ago, a surprise to me and everyone who knows me, since I had never written anything before.

I think I learned to write by reading. I am a voracious omnivore of books.

Holey Ghosts by Laura Koerber is well-written, so much so that I would have overlooked the blatant typos and given it five stars if I wouldn't be so stubborn as to insist on using my matrix. I especially appreciated the Author's Note at the beginning explaining that the book was not based on real myths, but rather the author's imagination. Koerber has an excellent imagination.

In the first chapter, I was a little confused because I didn't realize at first that nature spirits were talking instead of humans. However, this was quickly resolved, and the story was intriguing. Molly divorced her cookie-cutter rich husband so she could find herself. She runs to the New Mexican desert, where she finds Nate, a "weird" free-spirit who lets her rent an apartment for cheap. Nate, who is truly a spirit--a nature spirit who has taken human form--finds himself conflicted about Molly because he had previously (as in about 100 years prior) developed feelings for a woman named Moira, who has long since passed.

The story moves back and forth through time, and in the past, Moira and Doe (a native) are also main characters, as well as Johnny, who is in the present time a ghost. All these points of view and stories come together nicely at the end. This isn't really a romance in the traditional sense of the word, so I have not shelved it as such. It is more of two, older people (Molly is 50) finding peace in each other.

Koerber captured the laid-back feel of New Mexico perfectly. Her descriptions are subtle but amazing. I feel this book has appeal, especially for those who like literature written by women.

I was excited to read a new book from Laura Koerber because her books make me think outside the box. Historical fiction makes up the bulk of what I read, neat and predictable, but her books don't fit neatly in a single category. I think that's good for my aging brain because I have to pay close attention to her stories. Holey Ghosts is the latest weird and wonderful book. Set in a rural New Mexico community that was once a silver mining town, there's a bit of Native American mythology, historical fiction, the angst of contemporary middle-aged women in America, and yes, ghosts. As always, there are a couple of lovely rescue dogs, a subject that is close to my heart. I loved these characters, and I hope they make an appearance in another book.
