I have followed Zaydah and her group from the beginning as they went from initiates to Aeros and have been absolutely glued to this series. Books 1-3 were chefs kiss, however, this book didn’t quite hold that same level intrigue.
This is your typical transitional installment, that gap between big events happening, but it just seemed a bit redundant. The same events that happened on previous books of the series happened over again in this segment and I felt as if I was almost reading the same story over again. My interest was more stagnant throughout the majority of this piece with the attention grabber being that last 10-15% of the book.
Henderson has set things up nicely so far for us to have a fantastic finale book if it can be executed correctly.
Even with these ending thoughts, I can understand the necessity for this fourth book of the series as it relates to the overall plot and scheming, especially with the introduction of a new key player. I would continue to recommend this series and can’t wait to see how the author brings it to conclusion in book five.

I think this book needed a bit more time in the planning stages.
I really don't understand the necessity for a multi-POV story. It would add a lot of intrigue and really build on the writer's skills and knowledge of the world they've built to have just Zaydah's POV, adding to the suspense throughout the story rather than the knowledge of Il's steps throughout forcing our knowledge of her down our throats. Also, then we could be one step further away from the basic, boring FMC narrative that was close but just about not used in the first book. Why oh why could the two years this girl decided to practise training to become a rider not explain some her unusual-for-a-city-girl abilities rather than her street life? Why is every mention of her street life to talk about her skills rather than any actual hardship, and showing anything about her character rather than the base that every fantasy novel uses of quick, can't really trust anyone (though she does), and street smart so better than everyone else.
But asides from my hatred for that, it would have shown the writer's abilities to construct a compelling story and characters to be able to write someone encourtering this girl and trying to grasp how she feels about the world rather than just telling us. Tell tell tell, all the time. Show us.
Just realised no research was done and reached us either, and also??? Two months of ignoring someone you need to practise abilities with, work closely with and protect? Not happening. And lost out on so much time - a little space is one thing but that should have had serious consequences that are evident. I can pretend in my head all I want that certain things showed the consequences, but you can tell they weren't what's planned due to the lack of any literary devices showing correlations between events.
It also felt a bit like rereading previous books but having to make this new character AMAZING WOW AWESOME SHES GONNA BE REALLY IMPORTANT. But, there is so much going on under the surface, and magic to actually build the system for! Why not, instead of focussing on this new character and the same events, narrow in. Build your world, flesh it out, really show us how these events have already started and will impact the rest of the world. We could have been brought into court a lot more, Zaydah not being allowed to take a physical step back even as she needed an emotional one and being forced to see the world of politics that she has been mulling around the past two years. Seeing the impact Aris has on the court, seeing that they would rally behind him even as he believes they are loyal to the throne itself. Seeing how the world is unrested with these policies, with the lack of care a king has for his kingdom,.finding out more tidbits of information about why the king hates her bloodline so much now and the actions being taken to prevent him from harming her, her friends, and her mother. And in addition, her starting to form her own network of spies, how far to trust them, what information they give her, how she can test them, how can she know if they are loyal to her? She can't, not fully, but what she can do to make an educated guess. So many ways of building this sorry, setting out the plot points that were needed for the next book but also filling out the outlines of the world.
Also, what is the point of these age-gap romances? A ten year gap saying that they got together when she was freshly of age is disgusting and framed as romantic? No. Either close the age gap a bit and build on it more, if show the characters feeling uncomfortable or a reason that would be more normal in this world. Following, a six year age gap when you think someone is in their late teens is also gross. Imagine dating an eighteen yo when you're 24? Ew. The mental gap between the ages is so evident, and the older I get the more I see this.
Just read my reviews for the others and I had much stronger emotions for enjoying them, whereas I had to push myself through this one a bit more. It's alright, I wish the characters weren't so one dimensional but I do like the dimensions of them that I know, and the world is still interesting enough. I just want more time spent and for the author to keep building and working and perfecting.
Few points: I did like Ilyia's drive towards power, though why we had to keep being told this rather than actions speaking for her ??
I also like Zaydah competing and getting through was her drive, though like I said, I wish we had more information on why it took her two years to then try out herself. Because nothing more than a throwaway remark about training came up, but it doesn't feel like something the author will use further. If so, I will be excited to find out WHY that gap.
Aris and Zaydah were sweet, confident in each other, and I liked it. I liked how the second lack of communication ended up in awful vibes - this is why we communicate people!
I like how Group 14 came across to an unknown.
I will enjoy seeing Brev's response to his father's death and how manipulated he was.
I am interested in Car and Ilyia's previous meeting being expanded upon, and if her learning to read is going to be significant or another way or proving he knows her better waaa. Though, I did enjoy how Il's musing of why Zaydah was earning her genuine loyalty compared to Quintus then got reaffirmed by Car doing the same things - noticing and caring.

This book is a disappointment for me, I had so many expectations. We learn nothing new, the story is stalling, and no questions have been answered.
There is a lot a telling and not showing. For exemple, Zaydah keeps saying she will go around Aris to deal with their current situation but do nothing about it. Current situation that could have been easily dealt with by the way. It is said that after the coronation, Augustus would have to prove treason to ripe the prince title from Aris. They could have gotten married right there and Aurelia and Felix could have done the exact same thing ! I don't understand how such a non problem has been pushed as the main plot of the book ... And let's not talk about Aris who keeps on bending his back to his father while still saying he wants to put an end to his reign of terror.
Ilyia was not needed. She brings nothing to the story except a poor copy of the Aris-Brev-Zaydah love triangle. The story line has absolutely destroyed the character of Quintus (and Car) for me. The same man who saw through the weakness of Brev's attachement to Zaydah... I hope we will learn that he was in fact playing the game all along.
Concerning the final battle, I am still mad that Zaydah and Aris did not stop to think that maybe showing the magnitude of their current powers was not the best way to go...
They also knew that an attack was being launched and still almost drained themselves during the tournament.
Also Reiner's death was so underwhelming ! A so-called great warrior that had an entire realm shake in their boots just fell in his first battle. He had
what ? A paragraph dedicated to his downfall ? Not even in Aris's PoV.
Finally we have our dear Zaydah kidnapped by Brev. And in the synopsis of the future book we learned that new allies will reveal themselves yo her while she is kept in Brev's underground city. So once again, how is Ilyia any relevant to the story ?
I love reading Ella's writing. It always pushes you to want to read more. But even that could not make me appreciate this book. It felt more like a filler than a book on its own. I have still hope that the story will shift gear in the next book and we will finally have a story worth reading.

Mid read, page 215, small review, to update later.
I have zero interest in the new character pov we're forced to read. I dislike how she's written as well, and every fight scene her mind tells us she's from the streets so she's got skills. Every. Scene. She annoys me to no end, and at this stage, I see no reason for her POV's, and for there to be so many.
The two main characters, we lost closeness for a quarter of the book, even tho the world is on brink of an all out war, because feelings and politics. They needed to be training together, but instead are running in blind to fight scenes with there new found powers with little to no idea how to use or access...except conveniently the fmc works it out on her own when needed. Of course.
We are book 4, still reading the mountain challenge, choosing ceremony, tournament etc. we've done that for the previous books. So it's all repeated information and it's boring. It's like reading trials over and over again. I do not like trials for a reason. So this will absolutely drop it a star.
The bad guys are obviously the bad guys, so the plot twist better be good at end or I'll be mad. Lol.
I'll finish this book, hope it picks up because ATM, I'm disappointed in this direction. Will update review after I finish.
Edit: Page 284; this book has become a struggle to finish. I'm trying to finish.

This book dragged, the added pov was annoying, however, by the end it finally added something to the story, but not enough for me to appreciate the amount of chapters dedicated to a new character. We didn't even have Aris chapters. Unsure if I'll continue this series, between the last book and this book, the story was hard to get through, spending majority of the book in the same place, doing the same thing, over and over, when it's book 4. I've rated around 2.5 dropped to 2, because I struggled hard on this. The first 2 books were great, the 3rd was ok, this one wasn't much worth reading.

A second POV was introduced for a character that wasn't even in the first three books... I just couldn't find reason to care about Ilyas POV and I don't understand the necessity of it.

I love, love, love this series. The ending of this book left me mad at my kindle when it told me “book complete.”
This book is very plot driven and there is a new additional POV from a new character Ilyia. The introduction of this new character adds so many more layers of the political intrigue and games being played. I won’t lie, at first I was iffy about the addition but also kinda curious where it was going. The further in I got (especially her relations with a certain character) I needed more. The tension she builds up and paths she takes I felt like I was constantly changing my mind of what is happening next with her and her true motives. And I love it!
I was sad that with everything so plot driven and the addition of Ilyia’s storyline it meant that all the Aero friends of Aris and Zaydah were scarce. I get why. The plot was plotting and while there were small quick scenes with them, to have added scenes of their daily life like in previous books, would have slowed things down. So I understand why there was less of them, but I was sad because I love the many different friends and the dynamics between all the characters.
But overall another strong addition to this stellar series. And after the cliffhanger at the end I’m dying to be able to dive into the fifth and final book.

Ella, if you're reading this...first of all, how dare you.
This has been my most anticipated release of the year (now it is book 5). It didn't disappoint. There was the perfect mix of swooning, crying, feeling grief, shock, admiration, and so much stress. I don't think my heart stopped racing.
I was pretty skeptical about Ilyia because street tough female main characters tend to be really annoying and I can't explain why. Luckily, Henderson exhibited her talents once again with character building. I really liked Ilyia and her thought process. Her desire to align herself with power is interesting, but I really like the way she is playing it. She understands when she's in over her head and exactly how to navigate that. And she isn't mean just for the sake of being mean. Her sharp tongue is only effective when it needs to be. Otherwise, she holds back at the right moments, only speaks when she knows it will be useful, and is capable of spotting something genuine when it's there. Her creature is also delightful. I think she and Valentius would be fast friends.
Another stand out was Car. I already liked Car from previous books, but something about Ilyia's added perspective on him really solidified him as the all-around powerhouse that we've been told he is. We've seen his power in court and the size of his network from Zaydah's perspective, but Ilyia showed us that his power even extends as far as the slums. She already knows a lot about him and is fully aware that she doesn't know even half of his power. I love that for Car. Get it, my guy.
I also really loved Lucca's role in thwarting some of his father's plans.
What a guy. It further solidifies him as more than just a friendly face. The guy has his own schemes.
I desperately wanted more Aris and Zaydah, but also there is never enough Aris and Zaydah in this world for me so I'll never be happy on that front. Their chemistry floors me and their reasonableness with each other is so refreshing. It kind of gives me Max and Tisaanah (War of Lost Hearts) vibes because I don't spend the time feeling angry at miscommunication tropes. I feel angry at anything that stands in their way. By the way, Max and Tisaanah are my babies forever so consider it high praise that Aris and Zaydah are even in the same realm.
This book was less funny than the others, but a lot of the plot involved more serious things with the funniest characters not making as many appearances. But that's fine I guess. I'm over it. As long as my boy Claud and Group Fourteen are safe in the next book, I'll forgive it.
Anyway. Ella. Darling. Light of my life. My inbox is wide open if you wanna drop like...I don't know...the entirety of book 5 in there or something. No pressure.

Respectfully... I need compensation for the emotional damage. 😭
Every time I convince myself I've figured out where this series is headed, Ella reminds me I know absolutely nothing. And somehow I love her for it.
Wings of Ruin somehow raises the stakes without ever feeling overwhelming. The politics are sharper, the tension is constant, and there were multiple moments where I found myself sitting there thinking, "There is no way this is going to end well."
One of my favorite surprises was Ilyia.
I'll admit I wasn't sold the moment I realized we were getting a new POV. Introducing another main character this late into a series usually makes me nervous, but Ella completely won me over. Ilyia isn't just another strong female character thrown in for the sake of it. She's calculating without being cold, ambitious without being reckless, and smart enough to know when to speak and, more importantly, when not to. Watching her navigate a world where everyone has an agenda became one of my favorite parts of the book.
Her storyline opens an entirely different perspective on the world we've been living in for four books. Suddenly pieces start connecting in ways I never expected, and it made me question almost everyone's motives all over again.
Aris and Zaydah continue to be one of my favorite fantasy couples. Their relationship never feels forced, and that's honestly refreshing. They trust each other, challenge each other, and somehow manage to make even the quiet moments feel just as important as the action. Every chapter with them left me wanting just one more.
The found family is still one of the biggest reasons I love this series. I definitely missed having more of everyone's chaos, but the plot absolutely earned the spotlight this time around.

Every time I convince myself I've figured out where this series is headed, Ella reminds me I know absolutely nothing. And somehow I love her for it.
Wings of Ruin somehow raises the stakes without ever feeling overwhelming. The politics are sharper, the tension is constant, and there were multiple moments where I found myself sitting there thinking, "There is no way this is going to end well."
One of my favorite surprises was Ilyia.

As the series continues, the plot thickens. More chaos unfolds and more treachery transpires!! Let the thrill of the ride take ahold of you as you settle in for hours of reading this addicting series.
A couple new characters enters the series when part two starts
Ilyia and Cicero. Ilyia being the new main focal point side character is secretive, manipulative, and uses others for her own gain while playing whatever side will gain her power. Yet, she does show vulnerability at times showing us that she just wants to be seen and acknowledged for who she is and what she is capable of. Her loyalties will definitely be interesting to uncover as the series continues.
Aris and Zaydah’s power is shown more in this book and the reader starts to learn more about their new power that they each weld. We get glimpses into their relationship and what they must endure while together and apart knowing that ultimately the end goal is for them to be together and rule protecting their kingdom side by side. Although the spice level is missing for the most part, it’s unneeded. The reader is fully aware of the intense feelings of passion they feel for one another… it’s as if it literally burns between the pages.
Battles transpire and the action that takes place during these scenes are intense. High emotions peek not knowing how the battle will end as they are described in detail, packed full of suspense! My favorite part of the book isn’t during the well written battles but during the mountain games and the tournament. So much excitement and fun to read!! I was totally unwilling to put the book down during these events. Wasn’t even going to fib to myself or my family, just one more chapter? Nah, I’m not stopping until these scenes conclude.
Once again, Ella ends the book on a new cliffhanger where you are left with the unknown desperately wanting to know what happens next as new treachery is revealed that another key player in the kingdom is more than willing to risk the kingdom just to prevent Aris and Zaydah from having their happy ever after. So many possibilities on how this will go down as we wait too many days to find out what new twists and turns are in-store as a beloved character is left in a very bad predicament. I do hope the next book has the previous side characters back in the story more as they all were drastically missing from this book especially once part two starts. That also being the case with the creatures. I felt the creatures and original side characters took a back seat to the new side characters (especially Ilyia) having such a big spotlight. Although, I did fully enjoy the new creature Boadiciea. Hopefully all the usual side characters we have grown to love gets more page space in the next book and definitely more creatures. I missed Valentius in this book with his snarky attitude. Very much looking forward to Wings of Death!!

Ella Walker Henderson has done it again.
Every book in the Dark Sky series somehow makes me fall even more in love with these characters, and Wings of Ruin is no exception.
The character growth in this book is incredible. Aris and Zaydah both feel more mature, more powerful, and more aware of what they mean to each other. Their relationship continues to be one of my favorite parts of the series, balancing tenderness, trust, and emotional depth without ever losing the chemistry that made me root for them from the start.
And then there's Valentius.
At this point, I need an entire book dedicated to him. Every scene with him had me smiling. He's protective, caring, funny, and somehow manages to steal my heart every time he appears on the page.
The found family aspect remains one of the strongest parts of the series. Claudius continues to be an absolute highlight, bringing humor even when the stakes are high, and seeing familiar faces again felt like coming home. I was honestly wondering when Group Fourteen would finally make an appearance, and when they did, they definitely didn't forget to bring their humor and chaotic energy with them. It's always fun whenever Thaedus and Manus are around, and the interactions between Group Fourteen and Aris never fail to make me smile.
I also loved seeing Zaydah grapple with the weight of her growing powers. Her fears, vulnerabilities, and determination made her feel more real than ever, while Aris's patience and understanding showed just how much he's grown throughout the series.
We also get a new POV character in this book: Ilyia. She's a new aero who follows Zaydah's example and enters the trials without a sponsor. At first, I was surprised by the addition of a new main character, but I quickly found myself invested in her story. Ilyia is resourceful, ambitious, and willing to do whatever it takes to survive. She constantly keeps you guessing, and I never quite knew where her loyalties lay. I especially loved her bond with her dragon, Boadicea, and I'm excited to see where her story goes next.
The political tensions continue to build, the stakes feel higher than ever, and every chapter left me eager to see what would happen next.
If you love dragons, found family, powerful character development, fantasy politics, and a romance that will have you kicking your feet, the Dark Sky series deserves a place on your shelf.

Zaydah and Aris know a storm is coming. After they have accepted the prophecy that looms over them and obtained powers that are meant for the ruling monarch, it seems the storm is coming from them as well. They have little time to come to terms with what they did, the repercussions that will follow, and the powers that are now controlling them and affecting their bond before the new king starts to make his moves. Life keeps moving forward despite the turmoil facing Orinthia with the Choosing coming upon them followed by the king’s coronation and the tournament. Rainer and Brev take advantage of the divided attention with beasts displaying powers that defy logic. The fate of the kingdom will be at hand with divided loyalties between king, crown prince, and the traitors who oppose the status quo.
We start where the last book left off with Zaydah definitely out of sorts. She still has much to come to terms with before she is calm enough to plan for what is to come. The newly crowned king takes advantage trying to show his power but you can see the leverage he has is not as strong as he hoped. I will admit I was not a fan of how Zaydah was reacting in part 1. I absolutely get why the character reacts how they do, I just wasn’t a fan of it. Part 2 really picks up for me in how the FMC handles moving forward and not letting the events happen around her but starts to control the narrative herself. Aris is a much more approachable character in this book and I can see how Zaydah has been affecting him. We get introduced to a new character, Ilyia. There is still much to learn about this thief turned Aero and how she needs to restructure herself and her ideals now that she is an Aero. I like how she is a bit darker and world hardened, that we can go in a not so innocent direction in parts of the story. I am interested to see how her interactions evolve with Car in the next book. I also enjoy the fact we now have MCs in all 3 branches of Aero and can see a full picture of how the groups are working and interacting. There was good progress made in the story, that we are moving to the climax of the series and I can tell book 5 is going to drop some major plot bombs.

Wings of Ruin is the kind of book that reminds you why you got invested in the series in the first place.
The story expands the world, raises the stakes, and introduces new perspectives that don’t always seem exciting at first, but become increasingly important as the story progresses. The political tensions deepen, loyalties are tested, and nearly every character is forced to make difficult choices.
What stood out most for me was the character growth. Several characters are pushed beyond their comfort zones, and the emotional payoffs feel earned rather than handed out. The relationships continue to develop under pressure, which gives the story weight beyond the fantasy elements.
The pacing is not perfect. Some sections move more slowly than others, and readers primarily invested in the main romance may occasionally feel impatient when the story shifts focus elsewhere. However, those slower moments often serve a larger purpose later in the book.
The strongest aspect remains the emotional investment. This is not a story where everything comes easily. It thrives on tension, sacrifice, difficult decisions, and the consequences of those decisions. But the real revelation of this book is Ilyia. For the first time in the series we get a second POV, and it is a worthy one. She is slightly gray, completely compelling, and her villainous love interest only adds to it. I adore her. Claudius remains my absolute favorite side character, their camaraderie is sweet. Car continues to be deliciously mysterious and just sinister enough to keep you uneasy. After all, if fearless Ilyia fears Car,shouldn’t that be a warning? Will this be a twist? Or one of his games?

We are finally reunited in watching Zaydah and Aris and their struggle to play the political games between the Ring of Light, the Aeros, and the King. Yet despite it all, we still get to witness the love and protection of group thirteen, Zay’s initiation group, and of course, our beloved, Valentius.
Although we still get to experience the joy from those moments, Ella did not keep us waiting for new drama and action. From the beginning we witness Zay’s struggle with her new power and struggling to control it. Her emotions drive them to spiral out of control, especially when it comes to Aris. We get to witness her continued strength through all her battles and watch her grow to new heights.
Speaking of new heights, the plot develops by introducing a new generation of Aeros including Ilyia. Ilyia follows in Zay’s footsteps and joins the Choosing sponserless. She knows how to use her size to her advantage and is fearless in all things. Living on the streets in Orinth taught her all the skills she needed to survive the Choosing but also brings her face to face with someone she thought she left in the past. Political Intrigue, New Allies, and the Same Stubborn Hero

Final verdict: five stars. This series continues to deliver compelling characters, high-stakes politics, and enough intrigue to keep me turning pages late into the night. I'm already counting down the days until Wings of Death releases in September 2026.

Wings of Ruin is the fourth installment in the Dark Sky series, and while it was not my favorite book in the series, it still reminded me why I love this world so much.
One of the biggest highlights for me was meeting our new POV character, Ilyia. Introducing a new main character this far into a series is definitely a bold choice, but I ended up really enjoying her story. She is flawed, unpredictable, and not always easy to like at first. She lies, steals, and constantly keeps you guessing, but that is exactly what made her so compelling. I especially loved her bond with her dragon and cannot wait to see where her story goes next.
As for the romance arc, Zaydah continues to navigate her complicated relationship with Prince Aris.
This book felt more character focused than plot driven, and at times it seemed like a bridge between bigger events in the series. The pacing had its ups and downs, and I found myself wishing for more action and more time with the dragons. Even so, I was completely happy to spend more time in this world. The immersive worldbuilding, memorable characters, and dragon rider fantasy elements continue to make this series stand out.
If you love dragons, dragon riders, rich worldbuilding, and character growth, this series is absolutely worth checking out.

I've been lucky and blessed to have read all 4 books as arcs so far! I'm thankful to have gotten picked.
The progress that was happening between Zaydah and Aris' relationship at the beginning was more than I could have expected. The way I was kicking my feet like a school girl🤭 but then Aris had to be an idiot and go by his father's rules🤦♀️😡
I wasn't sure how to feel about the change of povs. I felt like we'd get to something good at the end of the chapter and then it would change povs.
I was a little iffy about Ilyia at first but by the end of the book I understand the need for her character and pov. I'm also unsure how much to trust the brewing relationship to Quintus. I know she is using him but it almost seems like she might feel something for him the more time they spend together. I'm also intrigued to find out exactly how old she is👀
Can I scream at the way the last battle ended? What in the hell! I can't even begin to think how Aris must be feeling right now. Zaydah was taken just as they were getting back into being together. Damnit Brev😡 just had to get in the way again🤦♀️

This series is addictive! The slowburn and tension between characters is done so incredibly well.
In this book we get a new character and POV, Ilyia, who is tough, calculated, and mysterious, trying to find her way into the aeros. Since the book/series is more heavily plot focused, we don't learn a lot about Ilyia, but I think that adds beautifully to the suspense and intrigue of her integration. One unfortunate trade off with the new character is that we see less of Zaydah's friends, like group 14 who I love. I trust Ella is making this a strategic move for the storyline and I'm definitely here to see how this new character plays out.
We also get to see the introduction of dragons into the creature mix which kicks up the intensity of battle scenes. I love how action packed this series is. It almost feels like you get micro cliffhangers in each chapter throughout which makes you unable to put the book down (the best feeling!). Of course, the ending has me gasping and raging and absolutely gutted waiting for book 5 now.

I've absolutely loved the first three books in the series, so I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed with this one.
My main issue lies with the characters.
Now, first of all, I love Aris and I think he is an absolutely swoon-worthy MMC, but he really annoyed me in Part 1.
We are also introduced to a new main character, Ilyia. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy her POV. She pretty much viewed people as a means to an end. We did see some of her humanity shine through towards the end, but it felt like her character wasn't fully fleshed out, but instead added as a way to keep the plot from becoming stagnant.
I would rather have had POVs from some of the other characters.
I mean, what happened to Elaria, Claudius, Pevari and Flavius? They played such a significant role in the first three books and in Part 1 of this one, but then they kind of faded into the background in order to make room for Ilyia.
Finally, I'm a bit wary of the next (and final) book due to how this one ended.

This is by far one of my all time favorite dragon series. I can never put the book down from start to finish.
This series just keeps getting better and better each book.
Ruin being in the title of this books fits perfectly because the ending of this book RUINED me. These cliffhangers just keep getting more and more brutal.
How am I suppose to survive until September?!?!
The addition of a new character and her POV adds such a different dimension and depth to the plot line.
Just when I think I know where something is going there is a sharp turn the opposite direction.
The slow burning/yearning is still just simmering away.
I love to see the continue growth of the characters and friendships/relationships grow.
I never thought I could hate a character more in this series than Brev but King Augustus has managed to find himself in the loathing spot.
The only thing I want is to have a couple chapter POVs from Prince Aris which I have a feeling we will be getting in the next book.

Another fantastic continuation of this series! Having followed along since the first book as an ARC reader, it’s been so fun to watch this story and its characters continue to develop. This fourth installment keeps the magic, adventure, and world-building that made me love the series in the first place while continuing to move the overall story forward.
I especially appreciated the way the romantic tension was introduced in this book. The series has remained clean, and the romance elements were handled tastefully and naturally without taking away from the fantasy plot. It added another layer to the characters and their relationships while still keeping the focus on the larger story.
Overall, this was a solid 4-star read for me. It’s a great continuation of the series, and the ending definitely leaves you wanting more (the cruel little cliffhanger tradition that authors apparently enjoy inflicting on readers continues...). I’m already looking forward to book five!

I love this series. Everytime I get my hands on a new book from this series I binge it as fast as I can. And then I want more!
Zaydah and Aris story and envolvement gets even more complicated and dangerous as time passes and even more now, having his father as their enemy.
They have to move their way through political scemes and at the same time maintaining true to themselves and each other.
In this book we are added to another pov, Ilyia's. She is a new candidate and then Aero, that can give new lights on their fate.
At first it was a bit strange this new perspective, but then I started addapting to it and I grew accostumed to her place in this story.
We have some new revelations both on the main and side characters and discover some long secrets. And we still have that found family vive we love about this series.
Now.. about that ending!!! Holly geezz. I need to know that happens next! Asap!!

This book had me in a grasp & was hard to put down. In this book we get a second pov & a new fmc, Ilyia! She is a morally grey character & will do whatever will benefit her the most. This book also picks up where the last book left off. Aris & Zaydah are trying to come to terms with their new power & trying to figure out how to control it. The mountain games & the tournament give us a good glimpse into how hard they are working on their powers & figuring them out. We get to see them face new challenges now that Aris’s father is now king. We have another new creature that they will have to figure out how to destroy. The battles in this book are well written & action packed & the cliffhanger will have you on the edge of your seat.

I have been mulling over how to write this review because I swear every time I read the next book in this series it absolutely ruins me and makes me just stare at my kindle like “I can’t believe she just did this to me again.”

The fourth installment of the Dark Sky series... and, like always, I loved every bit of Aries and Zaydeh. Their chemistry is so good and refreshing. My only complaint is that they just didn't have enough scenes together to satisfy my heart.
Coming to Ilya, I didn't really understand the need to introduce a new character and give so much importance to her POV. I felt like I was being forced to read it, so I ended up skimming through most of her chapters.
The cliffhanger at the end... damn. I had a feeling this book was going to end on a cliffhanger, but I definitely didn't expect that to happen.

I went into book four KNOWING there was a cliffhanger coming… but WHY did it show up so fast?! Like excuse me?! I finished this book in one day and now I’m sitting here aggressively staring at the wall trying to process my life choices.
This book finally gave me some “YES! FINALLY!” moments and I was absolutely feral over them. The tension? Incredible. The pacing? Had me in a chokehold. The reveals? RUDE.
And can we talk about the new character for a second because I already know she is about to become wildly important and I am obsessed with the potential chaos she’s bringing to this story.
Anyway… the author really said “here’s your emotional support scenes” and then immediately shoved me off a cliff with that ending. Now I get to wait in suspense like the rest of us gremlins.

Normally I’m not one for a book that switches POVs, and the start of the book was a bit rough in the transition from the last few books in the series. Once the plot got moving it really took off and it held my attention. I’m always ready for the next book in this series but this one definitely had me on the edge of my seat wanting more! The only thing I wish was different was a bit more detail in the training of Zaydah and Aris power. I would have loved to see them grow slowly in their own ways as well as together. Even though it said they didn’t have much time together before the tournament, I felt like it was a big jump from just discovering them to being able to fight. All around loved the book and I’m on the edge of my seat waiting for the next! My girl zaydah needs a break!

The first three-quarters spent a lot of time developing a completely new character, Ilyia. Which came out of left field and slowed the pace of the storyline. I spent most of this time confused and not fully invested in her addition to the plot. That being said, I absolutely devoured the last quarter of this book. The addition of Ilyia started to become a little bit clearer and the cliffhanger has beautifully set up the final book.
Overall, I have really enjoyed this series so far and I am truly looking forward to book 5 to finally see the Shield Queen reign. There have been a few ups and downs, but my average rating for books 1-4 would be ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5.

Goodness this was a wild ride of a penultimate epic story in this series! The story picks up right where book three ended with Zaydah and Aris getting power and having no way of knowing how to control it yet. This story is packed with intrigue, posturing from the new king, and a new fire breathing enemy.
Just when I thought I saw a light the author spun her story weavers tale in a different direction and left me completely speechless. Ella Walker Henderson has done it again! This series has been so phenomenal. This new fourth books was 🔥. Literally couldn’t put it down until it was finished. The switch between characters is so flawless, just flows right with the story, doesn’t leave you confused or wondering who is speaking. I am really looking forward to the next book. So glad I stumbled across this author. Has everything I have wanted from other “major books, that were lacking” and more. The relationships between each of the characters are so well written. I am not left wondering or having to make up my own conclusions along the way. So excited to see what is to come and what other stories she will create as the years go on.
