Quick Pitch An aging man's loneliness is assuaged by a haunting of a new home he has purchased.
The Good - Von Houser's used of sensory descriptors and his poetic use of language, especially in relation to the mundane, really placed me in the house with the unnamed protagonist and the home's specter. - Unique premise. I have never read a horror book where the person experiencing the haunting found comfort from the presence of another being. Speaks a lot about aging, loneliness, and regret.
The Bad -Not sure it belongs quite in the "bad" category, as I appreciate a non-conventional or unexpected ending, but I am not sure that the concluding sequence satisfies some of the themes and questions touched throughout the short story.
Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️– 4 out of 5 stars I intend to read the other short story Von Houser included with this one, "The Long Shift." His writing style borders on overly descriptive and poetic to me, but I enjoyed his use of language and the way he touched on real and sensitive themes. I have had this on my list for some time and was not disappointed.
